A 10Gbps Ethernet port gives a router a wired link rated for up to 10 gigabits per second (10,000 Mbps). Its practical job depends on whether the manufacturer assigns it to the WAN side, the LAN side, or lets you configure either role. A 10Gbps WAN port can connect to a suitably fast modem or fiber ONT; a 10Gbps LAN port can connect a compatible computer, NAS or switch. The port does not upgrade a slower internet plan, make Wi‑Fi run at 10Gbps, or make a 1Gbps client transfer faster than its own interface allows.
What the 10Gbps rating means
10Gbps, also written 10GbE, describes the maximum negotiated rate of an Ethernet link between two compatible interfaces. NETGEAR uses the equivalent terminology of 10,000 Mbps (10 Gbps). It is a link-rate ceiling, not a promise that an application will copy files at 10,000 Mbps. Protocol overhead, computer performance, storage speed, traffic load and the slowest component in the path all affect useful throughput.

The port is still an Ethernet socket. It carries traffic between the router and whichever network segment the port serves. On the internet-facing side, that segment leads to a modem or optical network terminal (ONT). On the home-network side, it leads to wired clients or a switch. The same physical connector can therefore have very different value depending on its role.
WAN and LAN: two different jobs
When the port is WAN
A WAN (wide-area network) port connects the router toward your internet service. Connect it to the appropriate Ethernet output on a multi-gigabit modem or to the Ethernet handoff from a fiber ONT, following the ISP and router instructions. If the service supplies more than 1Gbps and both the modem or ONT and the router WAN interface support the required rate, a 10Gbps WAN port removes the router’s 1Gbps-port bottleneck.

It cannot create bandwidth your provider does not deliver. With a 500Mbps or 1Gbps subscription, the WAN port may be capable of 10Gbps while the service remains limited to its subscribed rate. NETGEAR support notes that a multi-gigabit internet connection can be constrained to 1Gbps when the modem and router have only Gigabit Ethernet ports.
When the port is LAN
A LAN (local-area network) port connects equipment inside your home or office. A desktop with a 10GbE adapter, a suitably equipped NAS or a 10GbE switch can negotiate a 10Gbps local link. This is most useful for large file transfers, media production, backups or several simultaneous wired clients, even when the internet service is much slower.
A 1GbE computer plugged into the same socket still negotiates no more than 1Gbps. Ethernet devices advertise the rates they support and select a common rate; the faster router socket does not change the adapter in the computer.

Configurable WAN/LAN ports
Some routers label their high-speed socket “WAN/LAN.” The setup interface lets you assign it to the internet connection or to the internal network. Read the exact model’s manual before wiring anything: a port configured as LAN will not serve as the WAN connection, and a port configured as WAN will not be available for a local NAS until you change the setting.
Why the exact router model matters
Port layouts differ even among routers with similar Wi‑Fi branding. For example, the published specifications list these arrangements:
| Router model | 10Gbps port role | Other Ethernet ports listed | What that means for a wired setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Archer BE9700 | One 10Gbps WAN/LAN port | Three 2.5Gbps LAN ports | The 10Gbps socket can be assigned to the internet side or to a fast local device, while the remaining wired clients use 2.5Gbps ports. |
| ASUS RT-BE9700 | One 10G WAN/LAN port | Four 2.5G LAN ports | The high-speed socket is shared between WAN and LAN duties; four additional multi-gig LAN connections are available. |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent speed tests. Other models may provide a dedicated 10Gbps WAN, a dedicated 10Gbps LAN, several 10Gbps sockets or no 10Gbps socket at all. Check the label beside the connector and the model-specific specification and setup pages.

What must support 10Gbps for you to benefit
Think of a connection as a chain. The effective rate cannot exceed the slowest relevant link:
- Internet service: The subscription must offer a speed above 1Gbps if you expect faster-than-gigabit internet downloads.
- Modem or ONT: Its Ethernet handoff must support the service rate. A 1Gbps modem port will cap a faster plan before traffic reaches the router.
- Router port and configuration: The 10Gbps socket must be assigned to the correct WAN or LAN role and negotiate at the intended rate.
- Client interface: A computer, NAS or switch needs a 10GbE interface for a 10Gbps link. A 2.5GbE or 1GbE interface negotiates at its own maximum.
- Switch ports and uplinks: If a switch is inserted, every critical uplink and client port must be fast enough. A 1Gbps uplink can bottleneck several faster access ports.
- Cabling: The cable category, installation quality and run length must support the negotiated rate.
- Software and workload: Operating-system drivers, CPU capacity, storage speed, encryption and the remote server can prevent an application from reaching link rate.
Wi‑Fi is a separate radio link. A router advertised with a 10Gbps Ethernet socket does not mean a wireless client will obtain 10Gbps. Wireless performance varies with the client radio, channel width, signal, interference and other environmental conditions.
Cable guidance for a 10GbE run
TP-Link’s 2025 SOHO product guide lists Cat 6 and Cat 6A as supporting 10G in its cable table. The same guide states that Cat 6A or higher can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet). That distance is the manufacturer’s stated guidance for an appropriate installation, not a guarantee for every pre-made cable, connector or electrically noisy route. Actual performance depends on cable construction, termination, bends, interference and the condition of the run.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a short connection between a router and desktop, NAS or switch, use a cable identified by its category and rated for the desired speed. For a long in-wall run, Cat 6A gives the clearest path to the stated 100-meter capability. If a link repeatedly falls back to a lower rate, test with a known-good cable and bypass wall jacks or couplers before replacing hardware.
How to use the port in common setups
Fast internet through a 10Gbps WAN
- Confirm that your service is multi-gigabit and identify the Ethernet handoff speed of the modem or fiber ONT.
- In the router’s network or internet setup page, verify that the 10Gbps socket is assigned as WAN (or leave it in the manufacturer’s default WAN/LAN mode if the wizard does so).
- Connect the modem or ONT to that socket with an appropriate Ethernet cable.
- Complete the ISP authentication or automatic-address settings required by your service.
- Check the router’s status page for the negotiated WAN rate. A 1Gbps reading indicates that at least one device or setting in the WAN path is limiting the link.
- Run a wired speed test from a computer with a matching multi-gig interface. A wireless test measures the radio link, not the 10GbE WAN path.
Fast local transfers through a 10Gbps LAN
- Set the shared 10Gbps socket to LAN in the router’s administration interface, if it is not already a LAN port.
- Install or enable a 10GbE adapter in the desktop or workstation and install the operating-system driver recommended for that adapter.
- Connect the computer, NAS or 10GbE switch directly to the router with a suitable cable.
- If you use a switch, connect its fastest uplink to the router and attach compatible clients to its 10GbE or multi-gig access ports.
- Verify the negotiated rate on the computer or switch. Then copy a large file between fast storage devices; an internet speed test cannot measure the capacity of a purely local LAN link.
A switch adds ports; it does not increase the speed of the WAN service and cannot make a slower client faster. If the router has only one 10Gbps LAN-capable socket, a switch is the practical way to connect several 10GbE devices, provided its uplink and port capacities match the design.

When two interfaces connect, they advertise supported rates and choose a common mode. A 10GbE router port connected to a 1GbE adapter therefore settles at 1Gbps. A multi-gig port may support several intermediate rates between 1Gbps and 10Gbps, allowing a compatible device to negotiate 2.5Gbps or another supported speed instead of dropping all the way to 1Gbps.

The negotiated rate is visible in the router’s client list, a computer’s network-status panel or a managed switch’s port page. Treat that figure as the capacity of that link only. It does not prove that an internet download, file copy or Wi‑Fi transfer will reach the same number.
Troubleshooting a link that is slower than expected
The port shows 1Gbps
- Check whether the connected device actually has a 10GbE or multi-gig interface.
- Confirm that the router’s 10Gbps WAN/LAN socket is assigned to the intended role.
- Replace the cable temporarily with a known-good Cat 6 or Cat 6A cable and remove intermediate couplers.
- Inspect the modem or ONT specification; its Ethernet output may be limited to 1Gbps even when the service is advertised as faster.
- Check firmware, adapter drivers and switch settings, then power-cycle both ends so they renegotiate.
The link shows 10Gbps but transfers are slow
- For internet traffic, compare the wired result with the subscribed service rate and test from a capable computer.
- For local copies, check whether the source or destination storage can read and write quickly enough; hard drives, busy NAS arrays and encryption can become the bottleneck.
- Look for a slower switch uplink, a second 1Gbps segment or a client connected through Wi‑Fi.
- Use a large file or a purpose-built local throughput test rather than a small file that fits in cache.
The router loses internet access after rewiring
A shared WAN/LAN port may have been switched to LAN, or the modem may be connected to a different socket than the configuration expects. Restore the port assignment, reconnect the modem or ONT to the documented WAN socket, and rerun the router’s internet setup wizard. If the ISP binds service to a specific device or requires authentication, follow its replacement-router procedure.
What to compare when choosing a router or accessories
| Component | Specification to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Router | 10Gbps port speed, dedicated or configurable WAN/LAN role, number and speed of other LAN ports | Determines whether the socket serves internet, local devices or either, and how many fast clients can connect. |
| Modem or ONT | Ethernet handoff speed | A slower handoff caps a fast internet plan before the router can use it. |
| Network adapter | 1GbE, 2.5GbE, 5GbE or 10GbE support and operating-system compatibility | The client cannot negotiate above its interface rating. |
| Switch | Access-port speeds and uplink speed | Every path between the router and client must avoid a slower choke point. |
| Cable | Category, construction, termination and run length | Cat 6/6A guidance supports 10G under the stated installation conditions; poor runs can still force a lower rate. |
Do not buy a 10GbE adapter, switch or cable solely because a router has a 10Gbps socket. If your internet plan is below 1Gbps and your wired devices are also gigabit-only, the port provides headroom but no immediate speed increase. It becomes valuable when you are removing a known bottleneck, moving large files locally or preparing for a faster service.

Bottom line
A 10Gbps Ethernet port is a high-capacity wired connection whose job is determined by its WAN or LAN assignment. As WAN, it lets a compatible router accept a multi-gigabit modem or ONT connection; as LAN, it links fast local equipment such as a 10GbE workstation, NAS or switch. To obtain more than gigabit performance, the service or local workload, modem/ONT, router configuration, client interfaces, switch path and cabling must all support it. The port removes one possible bottleneck; it does not guarantee 10Gbps internet, Wi‑Fi or application throughput.
The figures above are manufacturer statements: NETGEAR’s 10,000 Mbps terminology (page accessed in 2026), and TP-Link’s 2025 guidance that Cat 6A or higher can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet) in the stated conditions.
