A 1.6 MW UPS rating means the system is designed to deliver up to 1,600 kilowatts (kW) of real output power under its specified operating conditions. It is a maximum power-capacity figure, not a battery-energy or runtime promise. The number alone does not tell you the data center’s IT load, how many minutes the batteries will run, or whether the design is N, N+1, or 2N. Those answers require the UPS’s kW and kVA ratings, power-factor limits, battery configuration, connected load, derating rules, and electrical architecture.
The direct meaning of 1.6 MW
In a UPS specification, MW describes the rate at which the system can supply electrical power to protected equipment. One megawatt equals 1,000 kilowatts, so:

1.6 MW = 1,600 kW of rated output power.
Eaton’s UPS sizing guide describes capacity as the maximum power a UPS can output to support connected equipment. That is a limit under stated conditions, not a measurement of what the facility is consuming at a particular moment. A data center could operate well below 1,600 kW, reserve part of the capacity for growth, or use some of it for non-IT protected loads such as cooling controls, networking, or building systems.

What the rating does not tell you
- It is not 1.6 megawatt-hours. MW measures power; MWh measures energy. The rating does not state how much energy the batteries store.
- It is not the site’s IT load. The connected critical load may be lower, and the UPS may also protect non-IT equipment.
- It is not a runtime figure. Battery minutes depend on the battery system, load, temperature, age, recharge limits and the manufacturer’s runtime data.
- It is not a redundancy specification. A 1.6 MW installation could be N, N+1, 2N or another arrangement.
- It is not automatically usable in every condition. Output power-factor range, voltage, ambient conditions, maintenance state and other derating rules can reduce available capacity.
Power, energy and runtime are different quantities
Power capacity
Power is the instantaneous rate of electrical delivery. A 1.6 MW UPS can be specified to supply as much as 1,600 kW to its output bus, subject to its limits. This is the quantity used when checking whether the UPS can carry the design load.
Stored energy
Battery energy is normally expressed in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours. It depends on the number and type of battery strings, cell capacity, discharge rate, temperature, end-of-life allowance and permissible depth of discharge. None of those values can be derived from “1.6 MW” alone.
Runtime
Runtime is how long the battery system can support a specified load after an outage. A UPS carrying 400 kW may run for a different period than the same UPS carrying 1,400 kW, even with identical power electronics. Eaton treats capacity and runtime as separate sizing questions, and Schneider Electric likewise notes that runtime changes with connected load.
For an idealized energy check, energy equals power multiplied by time. Supporting 1.6 MW for 15 minutes would require 0.4 MWh of delivered energy before accounting for conversion losses, battery efficiency, reserve margin and end-of-life derating. That calculation is only an illustration; it is not a battery-size recommendation. A real design must use the manufacturer’s discharge tables or calculator for the actual load and battery configuration.

Why kW and kVA must be read together
Kilowatts describe real power delivered to the load. Kilovolt-amperes describe apparent power, which includes the current and voltage the UPS must process. Their relationship is governed by power factor:
kW = kVA × power factor
At unity power factor (1.0), the numerical kW and kVA values are equal. At a lower power factor, a UPS can reach its kVA or current limit before it reaches its headline kW value.
| Example condition | Calculation | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Unity power factor | 1,600 kVA × 1.0 = 1,600 kW | kW and kVA are equal when PF is 1.0. |
| 0.90 power factor load on a 1,600 kVA limit | 1,600 kVA × 0.90 = 1,440 kW | The available real power can be lower if the apparent-power limit is reached. |
| 1,600 kW load at 0.90 power factor | 1,600 kW ÷ 0.90 ≈ 1,778 kVA | A proposal may need more kVA capacity to deliver the same kW at lower PF. |
These are electrical relationships, not a claim about one particular UPS. Check the product’s stated output power-factor range, overload curve and any current or temperature derating before treating 1,600 kW as continuously available.
What a 1.6 MW UPS says about the data center load
The rating is an upper bound for the UPS output, not proof that the facility has 1.6 MW of IT equipment. A design team may size a system around a lower present load and keep spare capacity for future racks. It may also reserve output for storage, telecommunications, controls or other critical services.

For example, a facility with a 1,050 kW design load could install more than 1,050 kW of modules so that it can tolerate a module outage or planned maintenance. Conversely, a 1.6 MW nameplate may be split across several modules and buses, with only part of the total assigned to a particular room. The single number cannot reveal the allocation.
Questions to ask for the actual load
- What is the measured present load in kW and kVA?
- What is the forecast design load at the end of the planning period?
- Which loads are on the UPS output, and which remain on generator or utility power?
- What reserve or growth margin is required?
- Are the figures peak, average, or a contractually defined design value?
Redundancy: N, N+1 and 2N are separate decisions
Capacity and resilience are related but not interchangeable. Eaton defines N+1 as installing one more unit or module than the load requires. If the design load needs four modules, an N+1 arrangement uses five, allowing the remaining modules to carry the load when one is unavailable, subject to the manufacturer’s operating limits.
| Architecture | Meaning | What a 1.6 MW figure cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| N | Installed capacity is just sufficient for the design load. | Whether any capacity remains after a failure or during maintenance. |
| N+1 | One additional unit or module beyond the capacity required by the design load. | How many modules make up the 1.6 MW total or which failure scenarios are covered. |
| 2N | Two independent capacity paths, each intended to support the required load. | Whether the site actually has duplicated UPS plants, switchgear and distribution. |
Ask for a one-line diagram and the failure or maintenance event the design is intended to withstand. A large aggregate MW number can still leave a single point of failure in switchgear, controls, distribution or a shared battery system.

Product specifications show why context matters
Manufacturer listings illustrate the scale without proving anything about a particular facility. Vertiv lists a Trinergy UPS configuration at 1,600 kVA and 1,600 kW, 415 V, with output power factor up to 1. That is a product specification for the stated configuration. Eaton’s 9395XC documentation lists ratings including 1,500 kW and 1,500 kVA at unity power factor. Neither figure is an industry-wide statistic or evidence that a named data center uses that model.

Product families and availability can change by region and date. The Vertiv Trinergy Cube page identifies its models as pre-2024 legacy products, so it should not be presented as a newly launched system. Confirm the current regional datasheet, voltage, firmware, service arrangement and ordering status before using any model example in a project decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Efficiency depends on operating mode
Efficiency affects the input power, heat rejection and generator or cooling requirements, but it is not a universal property of every 1.6 MW UPS. Eaton publishes up to 99% efficiency for the 9395XC in Energy Saver System mode and up to 97.5% in double-conversion mode at 480 V. Those are model-specific claims under stated conditions, not values that can be assigned to every UPS with a 1.6 MW rating.
When comparing proposals, compare like with like: the same operating mode, voltage, load level, redundancy state and environmental conditions. Determine whether the quoted percentage is maximum, typical or guaranteed, and ask how bypass operation, partial load and battery charging affect losses.

- Verify the rating basis. Confirm that 1.6 MW means rated AC output, and record the voltage, phase, frequency and maximum continuous rating.
- Record both kW and kVA. Note the rated output power factor, permitted load power-factor range and any current, temperature or altitude derating.
- Define the protected load. List every equipment category on the UPS and document present, peak and forecast kW and kVA.
- Map the architecture. Identify modules, parallel buses, static bypasses, maintenance bypasses, switchgear and battery strings. State whether the design is N, N+1, 2N or another scheme.
- Set the runtime requirement. Specify the load at which runtime is guaranteed, the battery configuration, end-of-life assumption and the generator-start or orderly-shutdown sequence.
- Check operating modes and efficiency. Compare double-conversion and any economy mode using the same voltage and load conditions.
- Review abnormal conditions. Ask for overload duration, short-circuit performance, bypass limits, recharge behavior and the effect of a failed module or battery string.
- Validate current documentation. Use the latest regional datasheet and installation manual, because ratings, legacy status and availability can change.
Common interpretation mistakes and how to correct them
“The data center has 1.6 MW of IT capacity.”
Correction: the UPS is rated for up to 1,600 kW of output under its conditions. Obtain the measured and forecast IT load separately.
Best Value
“A 1.6 MW UPS gives 15 minutes of backup.”
Correction: runtime requires battery and load data. Request a manufacturer runtime table for the exact battery strings, discharge end point and connected load.
“1,600 kW always equals 1,600 kVA.”
Correction: equality assumes unity power factor. Check the UPS’s kVA limit and the load’s power factor.
“The rating proves the system is N+1.”
Correction: redundancy is an architectural choice. Review the module count, design load and one-line diagram.

What to place in a technical handover
- Rated and usable output in kW and kVA, including power-factor limits.
- Single-line diagrams showing UPS modules, buses, bypass paths and distribution.
- Present, peak and forecast protected-load values with measurement dates.
- Battery make-up, nominal energy, runtime table and end-of-life assumptions.
- Redundancy objective and the failures or maintenance events it covers.
- Efficiency by operating mode and the conditions attached to each figure.
- Derating tables, overload limits, environmental requirements and service constraints.
With those records, “1.6 MW” becomes a useful capacity reference rather than a misleading shorthand for energy, runtime or resilience.
