In particle physics, a 5-sigma (5σ) result means that the observed excess is five Gaussian standard deviations above what a specified background-only hypothesis predicts. For a one-sided standard-normal test, that corresponds to p = 2.87 × 10−7—about one chance in 3.5 million for background processes alone to fluctuate at least that far. Physicists traditionally require this threshold before calling a new-particle signal a discovery. It is powerful statistical evidence against the stated background model, not a guarantee that a particle theory is true.
What “5 sigma” measures
“Sigma” (σ) is shorthand for a standard deviation. A standard deviation describes the typical spread of repeated measurements or simulated outcomes around an expected value. In the particle-physics setting, analysts ask how unusual the observed data would be if a particular hypothesis were correct.

The hypothesis used for a discovery test is usually the background-only hypothesis: known physical processes, detector effects and analysis uncertainties account for all events, with no contribution from the proposed new particle. Analysts calculate a test statistic from the data—often an excess of events or a likelihood-ratio value—and express its extremeness as a Gaussian-equivalent distance, called Z.
- Z = 0: the result is near the background expectation.
- Z ≈ 3: the data are unusual under background-only assumptions and are commonly described as evidence.
- Z = 5: the one-sided background tail is about 2.87 × 10−7, the conventional discovery threshold.
The phrase “five standard deviations above expectation” does not mean that every measured event lies five standard deviations from a mean. It refers to the distance of the combined result—across event counts, distributions, categories and uncertainties—from the outcome expected under the null model.

How unlikely is a 5-sigma fluctuation?
For a one-sided standard-normal distribution, the p-value associated with a significance Z is the probability that background alone would produce a result at least as extreme as the observed one:
p = 1 − Φ(Z)
where Φ is the cumulative distribution function of a standard normal variable. At Z = 5:
p = 2.87 × 10−7
That is approximately 0.0000287 percent, or about one background fluctuation in 3.5 million comparable trials. CERN’s public explanations often round this to “one in three and a half million.” The exact conversion above is the useful figure when a precise one-sided Gaussian value is required.

This is a probability calculated assuming the background-only hypothesis. It is not the probability that the proposed particle exists, and it is not a 99.99997 percent posterior probability that a theory is correct. A posterior probability would require a separate Bayesian model, prior assumptions and a comparison of competing hypotheses.
Why particle physicists use five sigma for discovery
Many opportunities for a fluctuation
Large experiments inspect many possible mass values, decay modes, event categories, detector regions and analysis choices. Even if each individual test has a small false-alarm probability, scanning many possibilities increases the chance that at least one location will show an apparently impressive bump. The five-sigma convention is intended to make a false discovery claim very unlikely in this environment.

A convention, not a law of nature
The threshold is a community standard tied to a planned statistical test and a stated background model. It is not a metaphysical boundary at which uncertainty disappears. A result just below five sigma can be physically important, while a nominal five-sigma number can be misleading if the model, selection or search procedure is poorly specified.
Evidence versus discovery
| Gaussian-equivalent significance | One-sided background probability | Usual wording | What it supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 3σ | About 1.35 × 10−3 (roughly 1 in 740) | Evidence | An interesting excess that merits more data and checks |
| 5σ | 2.87 × 10−7 (about 1 in 3.5 million) | Discovery or observation threshold | A claim that background-only explanations are highly disfavored under the analysis |
The rounded odds in public descriptions are not always identical. For example, an ATLAS educational feature describes five sigma as a background probability of less than one in a million, while the precise one-sided normal conversion is about one in 3.5 million. Use the exact p-value when reporting a numerical conversion and identify rounded figures as such.

What it says
- The observed data are highly incompatible with the specified background-only hypothesis.
- The incompatibility has been quantified with a defined test statistic, data selection and uncertainty model.
- Under those assumptions, a background fluctuation as large as the observed excess is extremely rare.
What it does not say
- It does not prove that a particle exists in a philosophical or absolute sense.
- It does not give the probability that the new-particle hypothesis is true.
- It does not establish the particle’s complete identity, properties or theoretical explanation.
- It does not guarantee that another experiment or later data set will reproduce the result.
A discovery claim therefore combines statistical significance with checks of detector performance, background modeling, systematic uncertainties, alternative explanations and independent measurements.
How an experiment turns an excess into a sigma value
- Define the signal question. Analysts specify the hypothesized particle or process, the final-state signature and the region of mass or other parameters being tested. A test planned before inspecting the data has a clearer statistical interpretation than a selection chosen after seeing a fluctuation.
- Select and reconstruct events. Detector readings are converted into tracks, energy deposits, jets, photons, leptons or other reconstructed objects. Quality requirements remove known detector problems and define the analysis sample.
- Model the backgrounds. Simulations, control regions and calibration data estimate how many events known processes should produce and what their distributions should look like. Detector efficiency, calibration, theory predictions and limited control-sample sizes contribute nuisance parameters and systematic uncertainties.
- Fit the data. A likelihood or related statistical model compares the observed distributions with background-only and signal-plus-background descriptions. The fit can use event counts, a mass peak, a multivariate score or several categories at once.
- Construct a test statistic. The statistic measures how much better the signal-plus-background description fits than the background-only description, while profiling or otherwise incorporating nuisance parameters.
- Find the background p-value. Analysts determine how often the background-only model would produce a test statistic at least as extreme as the observed one. This can use an analytic approximation, pseudo-experiments or calibrated simulation.
- Convert p to Z. The p-value is mapped to the equivalent one-sided standard-normal tail. Reporting “5σ” is a compact way to report this Gaussian-equivalent significance.
- Check the result. Analysts test alternative background descriptions, vary selections and calibrations, inspect control samples and compare with independent channels or experiments before making a discovery statement.
Because every step enters the definition of the test, a sigma number has meaning only together with the analysis that produced it.
Local versus broader-search significance
Local significance
A local significance treats one specified location or channel as the test target—for example, a particular mass value in a selected decay mode. If that location was selected in advance, the local p-value directly describes the background probability for that test.

Global or search-wide significance
A broad search may scan a mass range, many categories or multiple related analyses. The chance of finding at least one upward fluctuation grows with the number of opportunities. A search-wide, sometimes called global, significance accounts for that scan. The adjustment is often discussed as a look-elsewhere effect.

Before comparing them, ask whether each number is local or includes a broader search correction, what range was scanned and which channels were included. Do not apply a universal correction factor: the appropriate calculation depends on the actual search and correlations among tests.
Observed and expected significance are different
An observed significance is calculated from the data collected by the experiment. An expected significance is a sensitivity estimate made before looking at those data, usually the median result predicted if a particular signal strength is present. Expected values help with experiment design and interpretation, but they are not discoveries.
A result can have a high expected sensitivity yet a lower observed significance because the data fluctuate downward, or a modest expected sensitivity can produce a large observed value through an upward fluctuation. Reports should label which type is being quoted.
Why uncertainties matter
Counting statistical noise is only one source of uncertainty. A particle-physics analysis may also depend on luminosity calibration, trigger efficiency, reconstruction efficiency, detector energy scales, background normalization, theoretical cross sections and limited simulation samples. These effects are represented by nuisance parameters or constrained distributions in the likelihood.

If uncertainties are underestimated, the apparent excess can look more significant than it really is. If they are large, a visible difference between data and the nominal background may correspond to a lower Z. A five-sigma claim therefore refers to the result after the stated statistical and systematic uncertainties have been included, not simply to the difference between two central values divided by a counting error.

On 4 July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations announced evidence for a new particle near 125 GeV that was consistent with the Higgs boson. Both experiments reached the five-sigma threshold for their discovery announcement. CMS described an excess near 125 GeV with a statistical significance of five standard deviations above background expectations.
Subsequent ATLAS analysis reported a 5.9-standard-deviation observation and a background-fluctuation probability of 1.7 × 10−9 for that analysis. The two figures illustrate why the data set, channel combination, test definition and analysis date must accompany a sigma value; a later or differently constructed analysis need not produce exactly the same number.
The workflow was the same general sequence used in other searches: select collision events, reconstruct candidate decay products, model known backgrounds, fit for an excess near the hypothesized mass, convert the test statistic to a Gaussian-equivalent Z and compare it with the discovery convention. The five-sigma result established that the excess was very unlikely to be a background fluctuation under the tested models; further measurements were still needed to determine the particle’s spin, couplings and other properties.

How to compare two reported sigma values
- Check the hypothesis: Are both values testing the same background-only statement and the same signal definition?
- Check local or global scope: Was one value for a fixed mass while the other covered a wide scan?
- Check observed versus expected: Is the number from real data or a pre-data sensitivity prediction?
- Check included uncertainties: Are statistical and systematic effects treated consistently?
- Check the data set and channels: Later luminosity, additional decay modes or a combined fit can change the result.
- Check replication: Did an independent experiment or later data reproduce the excess?
A larger sigma is not automatically a stronger physical conclusion if it was obtained from a narrower, selected or differently calibrated test. Context determines what the number means.

Common misunderstandings
“Five sigma means there is only a one-in-3.5-million chance the particle is real.”
No. One in 3.5 million is the approximate probability, under a one-sided Gaussian background model, of obtaining an excess at least that extreme if the background-only hypothesis is true. It is not a probability assigned to the particle hypothesis.
“A five-sigma result can never be wrong.”
No statistical threshold eliminates mistakes in detector operation, background modeling, hidden analysis choices or an unrecognized systematic effect. Independent checks and replication remain essential.
“Three sigma is meaningless.”
Three sigma is commonly called evidence, not discovery. It can motivate follow-up observations and guide research, but the probability of a background fluctuation is far larger than at five sigma, especially in a broad search.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“Sigma, confidence level and posterior probability are interchangeable.”
They are different quantities. Sigma is a Gaussian-equivalent expression of a p-value for a specified test. A confidence interval describes parameter values under a defined procedure. A posterior probability combines likelihood information with prior assumptions. Converting one into another without stating the method is incorrect.
Bottom line
Five-sigma significance means that, under a specified background-only model and analysis, the observed excess lies five Gaussian standard deviations into the one-sided tail, corresponding to p = 2.87 × 10−7 or roughly one chance in 3.5 million. Particle physics uses this as the conventional discovery threshold because experiments search many channels and mass values and want a very low rate of false claims. The number is compelling evidence against the tested background explanation, but its meaning remains conditional on the data, model, uncertainties, search scope and independent confirmation.
