1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA 280 Hz ultrawide can refresh its image up to 280 times per second, but that does not mean your PC or a game will produce 280 frames per second. To use the monitor’s top mode, the monitor, chosen input, PC output path and cable must support that resolution and refresh rate together. To see 280 distinct game frames each second, the game must also render that quickly.
What 280Hz means—and what it does not
Hertz (Hz) describes how many times per second a display can refresh. At 280 Hz, the monitor’s maximum refresh rate is 280 updates per second. Frames per second (fps), by contrast, describes how quickly a game renders images. The monitor’s refresh ceiling does not guarantee a matching frame rate.

These are separate checks: your operating system may be able to select a 280 Hz display mode even when a demanding game cannot render 280 fps. Adaptive sync can coordinate refresh with varying frame delivery on supported setups, but it does not generate additional frames.

The resolution paired with the refresh rate matters. For example, Dell specifies its 34-inch Alienware AW3426DW as a 21:9 UW-QHD monitor with a maximum mode of 3440 × 1440 at 280 Hz. Dell says its two HDMI inputs support that combination with HDR, VRR and Display Stream Compression (DSC) over HDMI 2.1 FRL; the monitor also has one DisplayPort 1.4 input. Dell lists HDMI 2.1 FRL and DisplayPort 1.4 cables as included accessories. These specifications apply to this model, not to every ultrawide (Dell AW3426DW specifications).
#1 Best Overall
- 1ms MPRT: Colors fade and illuminate instantly with a 1ms response time, eliminating ghosting and piecing together precise imagery during action-packed scenes and gaming.
- Luminous Backcover Lights: A colorful LED light illuminates the back cover of the monitor, delivering a uniquely modern design.
- WQHD Resolution: At 5 million pixels, Wide Quad HD Resolution (3440 x 1440) display resolution provides you with the next level of refined, and detailed picture over the current 1080P standard.
- 21:9 Ultrawide: See more and do more with an ultrawide monitor. 21:9 provides you with 30% more screen space versus the conventional monitor. With an ultrawide resolution of 3440 x 1440, expand your performance and productivity.
MSI provides another model-specific example: it lists the 34-inch MAG 341CQP QD-OLED X28 for 3440 × 1440 at up to 280 Hz through HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode. Its published inputs include HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a HBR3 (MSI MAG 341CQP QD-OLED X28 specifications).
NVIDIA’s GeForce monitor compatibility listing gives the AW3426DW a 48–280 Hz range. That listing concerns monitor compatibility and sync support; it does not predict the frame rate your PC will achieve in a particular game (NVIDIA G-SYNC monitor compatibility list).

How to check whether your PC can use 280Hz
- Find the exact monitor mode. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the highest refresh rate at the monitor’s intended resolution. A maximum refresh number without its resolution is not enough. The Dell and MSI examples both specify 3440 × 1440 at 280 Hz.
- Check the input you plan to use. A monitor’s ports may not all support the same modes. Read the model’s input-specific specifications, including any stated conditions such as DSC. Do not assume that one port’s capability applies to another.
- Check the complete PC output path. Confirm that the GPU or laptop output, cable, and any dock or adapter in between support the required mode. A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not establish what video mode a laptop, dock or adapter supports.
- Select the refresh rate in your system settings. Use the operating system’s display settings or the GPU’s display settings to choose 280 Hz after connecting the monitor. If it is unavailable, check the active monitor input, cable, dock or adapter, and PC output against their exact specifications. Software cannot override a physical interface or GPU limit.
- Check game performance separately. A selectable 280 Hz desktop mode confirms the signal setting, not that a game renders 280 fps. Performance depends on the PC, game, resolution and graphics settings; without those details, no general compatibility claim can promise 280 fps.
Dell advertises FreeSync Premium Pro, G-SYNC Compatible and VESA AdaptiveSync for the AW3426DW. Such labels are specific to the model and configuration; they do not change the distinction between refresh rate and rendered frame rate.

What to compare before buying
- The maximum resolution and refresh rate supported together—not the refresh-rate number alone.
- Which inputs support that mode, and whether the manufacturer specifies DSC or another condition.
- Whether your PC’s video output, cable, and any dock or adapter support the same mode end to end.
- Whether adaptive sync is supported by the monitor and your particular PC configuration, if that matters to you.
If you are checking an existing setup, a confident answer requires the exact monitor model, PC or GPU model, cable, and any dock or adapter in the connection.
