1,650 lux (lx) is an illuminance measurement: it describes how much light reaches a particular surface, such as a page, at a particular position and angle. It is not a universal measure of how bright a lamp looks or how much light the lamp emits.
For reading, published guidance commonly falls around 300–500 lx for desk work, 320–400 lx for routine reading and writing, and 600 lx for difficult work such as proofreading. A reading of 1,650 lx is therefore well above those examples, but whether it is comfortable depends on where it was measured, the task, glare, shadows and the surrounding light.

What 1,650 lux actually measures
Lux measures illuminance: the luminous flux arriving on a surface per square metre. One lux equals one lumen per square metre in illuminance terms. The surface can be a sheet of paper, a desk, a wall or a sensor. The Austrian Federal Office of Metrology (BEV) defines illuminance as light falling on an area that does not itself emit light and identifies the lux (lx) as its unit. BEV’s photometry explanation describes the measurement in those terms.
That distinction matters because a lamp’s lumen rating is its light output, while a lux reading tells you what arrives at one measured place. The same lamp can produce very different lux values on a page depending on distance, beam direction, shade, room surfaces and the page’s orientation.

A lux number is incomplete without its conditions
To interpret 1,650 lx, you need at least the measurement location, sensor orientation, distance from the source and operating conditions. A meter pointed toward a lamp, held above a desk, or laid flat on a document will not necessarily report the same value. A reading taken in the middle of a room cannot automatically be treated as the illuminance on your book.
BEV also notes the familiar point-source relationship in which illuminance decreases with the square of distance. In practical terms, moving a light farther away can reduce the light on the page substantially; doubling the distance can reduce the idealized illuminance to roughly one quarter, before beam shape and room reflections are considered.
Why 1,650 lx is not automatically a reading target
1,650 lx is above the desk and routine-reading ranges cited by several workplace and metrology authorities. That does not make it unsafe or necessary for every reader. More light can help a detailed task, but excessive brightness or a bright patch surrounded by a dark room can create glare, reflections and visual discomfort. The useful question is not “Is 1,650 the correct number?” but “What illuminance reaches the text, and is the page clear and comfortable for this task?”

| Authority or guidance | Illuminance figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Austrian Federal Office of Metrology (BEV) | About 300–500 lx | Desk illuminance |
| Employment and Social Development Canada | At least 500 lx | Illuminance on a document in the described VDT-work circumstance |
| WorkSafe Victoria | 320–400 lx | Moderately difficult routine tasks such as reading and writing |
| WorkSafe Victoria | 600 lx | Difficult tasks such as proofreading |
| UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) | 50 lx | Example: corridor or walkway |
| UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) | 300 lx | Example: process control room |
| UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) | 750 lx | Example: studying an engineering drawing |
BEV’s 300–500 lx desk range and WorkSafe Victoria’s 320–400 lx routine-reading range overlap closely. The Canadian figure is a specific workplace requirement for document lighting in the circumstance described on its page, rather than a prescription for every household. The 600 lx proofreading figure illustrates how a more demanding visual task can justify more light.
Routine reading, study and detailed work
For ordinary books, printed documents and handwriting, starting near the 300–500 lx desk range is a reasonable interpretation of the cited guidance. Small type, low-contrast print, glossy pages, handwritten corrections and close proofreading can benefit from the higher end of the range or local task lighting. HSE states the general principle plainly: “In general, the more detailed the task, the greater the light requirement.” Its examples range from 50 lx for a walkway to 750 lx for studying an engineering drawing, showing why a single number cannot cover every activity.
Reading comfort also depends on uniformity. A page brightly lit at 1,650 lx while the rest of the room is very dark may feel harsher than a page at a lower level in a more evenly lit room. Conversely, a dim page under a bright ceiling fixture can force your eyes to work against reflections and contrast.
What can produce a 1,650-lux reading?
A manufacturer specification demonstrates why distance and test conditions must accompany any lux figure. Aputure’s official specification for the INFINIBAR PB12 lists 1,650 lx at 0.5 metres and 6,500 K, and 607 lx at 1.0 metre at the same colour temperature. The figures are product photometry for a video light, not a recommendation for reading and not evidence that this device produced the 1,650-lx value in the question. They simply show how changing distance can alter illuminance dramatically.

Colour temperature, beam angle, diffusion and the measurement method can also affect a specification. Two lights with similar lumen output may put different amounts of light on a page because one concentrates its beam and the other spreads it. A narrow beam can create a high centre reading but uneven edges; a diffused task lamp may produce a lower peak but more usable coverage.
How to measure the light on your page
If you need a precise answer—for example, when setting up a workstation, checking a lamp or investigating why print is hard to see—measure at the document rather than relying on a lamp label or a room estimate.
- Put the document in its normal reading position. Lay the book or paper on the desk, or place it on the easel or stand you actually use.
- Place the lux-meter sensor on the document plane. Canadian federal guidance describes laying the meter on the document to assess document illuminance, whether the document is on a desk or an easel. Keep the sensor where the text is, not several centimetres above it.
- Match the page orientation. A horizontal desk page, a tilted music stand and an upright screen receive light differently. Keep the sensor face parallel to the surface being assessed.
- Measure representative points. Check the centre and areas near the top, bottom and sides if the lamp has a narrow beam. A single high reading can hide dark portions of the page.
- Record the setup. Note lamp distance, dimmer setting, colour-temperature setting, shade position and whether daylight or other room lights were on. Without these details, another reading is difficult to reproduce.
- Adjust for comfort, not only the number. Move or aim the lamp, add diffusion, raise the ambient light or reduce reflections. Stop when the text is clear without glare or an obvious bright hotspot.
Most readers do not need to buy a meter. If a page is hard to read, an adjustable desk or reading lamp is a practical category-level solution because it lets you aim light at the task and change the level. HSE notes that people performing different activities may need local lighting control. A meter becomes useful when you need to verify a particular workplace level or compare changes systematically.

Avoid shadows from your writing hand
For right-handed writing, placing the lamp to the left generally reduces the hand’s shadow across the page; left-handed writers often prefer the opposite side. The exact position depends on the arm, shade and desk layout. Aim across the page rather than directly into your eyes, and keep the brightest part of the beam off glossy print when possible.

Balance task and ambient light
Local light should make the page readable without creating a large contrast between the page and the surrounding room. A modest amount of general room light can reduce the sensation of staring into a bright rectangle. At the same time, a ceiling fixture directly behind or above you can reflect from glossy paper or a screen, so changing the angle may be more effective than simply increasing output.
Control glare and reflections
Glare can make a page look worse even when the meter reports a high value. Tilt the book, move the lamp to one side, use a shade or diffuser, and avoid aiming a bare source at polished paper. For screens, position the display and lamp so neither reflects the other into your eyes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes when interpreting lux
Confusing lux with lumens
Lumens describe a source’s total visible-light output; lux describes light arriving on a defined area. A high-lumen lamp is not guaranteed to deliver a high or even reading on your particular page.
Comparing readings made at different distances
“1,650 lx” at half a metre and “1,650 lx” at a different distance are not equivalent descriptions. Distance, beam spread and orientation must travel with the number.

Using a room average as a page measurement
The relevant surface for reading is the document. A sensor on a nearby shelf or pointed toward a window may report a value that says little about the print in front of you.
Treating workplace guidance as a household law
Canadian, Austrian and Australian/New Zealand guidance cited here comes from particular occupational or office contexts. Use the figures as informed reference points, not as a universal legal requirement for every home reader.
Chasing a higher number when the problem is contrast
Dirty or faded print, a glossy page, poor eyesight, flicker, shadows and reflections can remain troublesome at 1,650 lx. Improve the viewing conditions and, where appropriate, use corrected vision or professional eye-care advice rather than assuming more light alone will solve the problem.
A practical decision guide
- Ordinary reading: begin around the cited 300–500 lx desk range and judge the page in your normal position.
- Proofreading or very fine detail: consider the higher end of the range; WorkSafe Victoria lists 600 lx for difficult tasks such as proofreading.
- A measured 1,650 lx: check whether the value was taken on the page, at what distance and under what settings. If the page is comfortable and evenly lit, the number alone is not a problem; if it causes glare, reduce or redirect the light.
- Uneven illumination: reposition or diffuse the lamp and check several points on the document instead of relying on the brightest spot.
- Unclear source of a published figure: do not compare it with another lux value until the location, orientation, distance and operating conditions are known.
The central takeaway is that 1,650 lux is a surface measurement, not a universal reading prescription. For most reading situations, the cited guidance points to roughly 300–500 lx, with higher levels useful for more detailed work when glare and unevenness are controlled.
