To use Xbox Cloud Gaming, you need a supported device in a supported region, a qualifying way to access the game, a compatible controller unless that title offers touch controls, and a stable internet connection. Microsoft publishes 10 Mbps download as the minimum connection and recommends 10 Mbps on mobile devices or 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets for best performance.
You do not need an Xbox console. A supported phone, tablet, computer, television, or Meta Quest headset can run cloud games. Subscription requirements depend on the title: most subscription games require an eligible Game Pass plan, while selected free-to-play games can be launched with only a free Microsoft account.

The requirements at a glance
Before troubleshooting a stream, check these five conditions:
- Game access: an eligible Game Pass plan for subscription titles, or a free Microsoft account for selected free-to-play games such as Fortnite.
- Supported hardware and location: an eligible model in a country or region where Xbox Cloud Gaming is offered.
- Input: a compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB, unless the game provides Xbox touch controls.
- Internet: at least 10 Mbps download according to Microsoft’s published minimum; Microsoft recommends 10 Mbps for mobile and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets for best performance.
- Software: a supported Xbox app or browser. Microsoft lists Edge, Chrome, and Safari for play at xbox.com.
These are access and performance guidelines, not a guarantee of a particular resolution, frame rate, latency, or audio setup. Microsoft says results also vary with connection quality, your location, and the device you use.

Do you need Game Pass?
There is no single subscription answer. The game you want to launch determines the qualifying access method.
Subscription games
Microsoft’s current Xbox service page lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as plans that include cloud gaming access. The catalog differs by plan, market, platform, and licensing, so an eligible plan does not mean every Game Pass title is streamable. Check the cloud-playable designation for the individual game in the Xbox app or cloud-gaming catalog.
Cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass. A PC Game Pass subscription by itself therefore does not satisfy the cloud-access requirement.
Selected free-to-play games
Some free-to-play titles, including Fortnite, can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in a supported region. You do not need to buy an Xbox console or subscribe to Game Pass for those qualifying games. Microsoft describes this as applying to selected titles rather than the entire free-to-play category.
Games you already own
Microsoft says users can stream selected cloud-playable games they own or buy outside the Game Pass catalog. Eligibility is limited to participating titles, supported devices, and supported markets.

Microsoft’s September 3, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement says that beginning in November 2026, eligible players will be able to buy cloud-playtime hours and stream eligible owned games without subscribing to Game Pass. As of October 17, 2026, that November change has been announced but is not yet in force. Microsoft had not published the extra-hour pricing or complete market details in that announcement, so check the Xbox Store and current Xbox notices after rollout before relying on this option.
Which Game Pass tier gives cloud gaming?
Microsoft’s service page displays monthly cloud-playtime allotments for the three eligible tiers. The September 3 announcement says the same allotments will apply when the November 2026 change takes effect. Libraries, benefits, prices, and availability vary by market; the figures below are hours per month, not unlimited streaming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Plan | Monthly cloud-playtime allotment | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | 5 hours | Current catalog, benefits, price, and availability in your market |
| Game Pass Premium | 10 hours | Current catalog, benefits, price, and availability in your market |
| Game Pass Ultimate | 15 hours | Current catalog, benefits, price, and availability in your market |
Microsoft says monthly cloud limits vary by plan. If you expect to play beyond the included hours, look for the current additional-hour terms in your market. Microsoft’s September announcement says eligible subscribers will be able to buy more hours through the Xbox Store, but it had not stated pricing when the announcement was published.
The same announcement estimates that the upcoming limits will affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. That is Microsoft’s estimate, not an independently verified measurement, and it does not predict how many hours any individual will play.
What devices can run Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Microsoft lists the following device categories, with availability depending on the exact model, operating system, app or browser version, and region:
Rank #3
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.

- Windows PCs
- Apple iPhone and iPad devices
- Android phones and tablets
- Xbox consoles

- Amazon Fire TV devices
- Select Meta Quest virtual-reality headsets
“Supported TV” or “supported phone” is not a guarantee for every model in that category. Manufacturers release many generations with different operating systems and app stores. Confirm your exact model in Microsoft’s live supported-device and supported-region lists before buying hardware or troubleshooting an installation.

At xbox.com, Microsoft names Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari as supported browser examples. Keep the browser updated, allow the site to use your controller, and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription or free-to-play entitlement. A TV or VR headset may instead require its Xbox app rather than a browser.
Do you need an Xbox console?
No. A console is one supported endpoint, not a prerequisite. Cloud rendering happens on Microsoft’s servers and the video stream is delivered to your device. You still need an eligible account, game access, controller or touch controls, and a connection that can carry the stream reliably.
Controller and touch-control requirements
Microsoft’s general setup guidance calls for a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. A controller phone clip or a dedicated streaming accessory can make handheld play more comfortable, but neither is required.
For its owned-game streaming instructions, Microsoft specifically names these compatible examples:

- PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.
- Xbox Wireless Controller
- Xbox Adaptive Controller
- PlayStation DualSense
- PlayStation DualShock 4
Compatibility can depend on the device and operating system. Pair the controller before launching the stream, then check whether button input appears in the game. On a PC, a USB cable can avoid Bluetooth pairing and battery problems; on a phone, Bluetooth is usually the practical option.
Some games expose Xbox touch controls. When that option is available, the game can be played on a compatible touchscreen without a physical controller. Touch support is title-specific, so do not assume that a game offering cloud play also offers touch input.
How fast must your internet be?
Microsoft’s published minimum is 10 Mbps download speed. Its best-performance guidance is 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets. Microsoft recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data where appropriate.
| Use case | Microsoft’s published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum connection | 10 Mbps download | Below this, the connection is outside Microsoft’s stated minimum. |
| Best performance on a phone or tablet using mobile data/Wi-Fi | 10 Mbps download | A guidance figure, not a promise of a fixed picture quality or latency. |
| Best performance on a console, PC, or tablet | 20 Mbps download | More headroom for a stable stream on these larger-screen endpoints. |
Microsoft does not specify an upload-speed threshold or a latency target on the cited Xbox Cloud Gaming page. Do not treat an invented ping number as an Xbox requirement. A speed test can show whether your download rate is near Microsoft’s figures, but it cannot by itself reveal Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, or a poor route to the service.
Set up the connection for the best chance of a stable stream
- Run a download-speed test on the same device and in the same room where you will play.
- Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when your router and device support it. The 5 GHz band is Microsoft’s recommendation for cloud gaming; the faster band may have shorter range than 2.4 GHz, so move closer to the access point if necessary.
- Pause large downloads, video uploads, cloud backups, and other high-bandwidth activity while playing.
- If Wi-Fi is unreliable, test a wired connection on a compatible PC or console, or compare a strong mobile-data connection where your plan and region permit it.
- Close other browser tabs and apps that compete for the device’s resources, then restart the stream.
These steps improve the connection path but cannot overcome an unsupported region, an ineligible game, or a service-side outage.

How to start your first cloud session
- Confirm regional support. Check Microsoft’s current supported-region list. Cloud Gaming availability is not global and can change.
- Choose the game-access route. Sign in with a free Microsoft account for a qualifying free-to-play title, or verify an eligible Game Pass plan for a subscription game. If you own a game, confirm that the specific title is listed as cloud-playable.
- Prepare the device. Install the Xbox app where Microsoft requires it, or open xbox.com in Edge, Chrome, or Safari. On a TV or headset, use the supported Xbox app for that platform.
- Connect input. Pair a compatible controller over Bluetooth or plug it in by USB. If the title advertises Xbox touch controls, you can use the touchscreen instead.
- Test the network. Compare the device’s download result with Microsoft’s 10 Mbps minimum and the 10 Mbps mobile or 20 Mbps console/PC/tablet best-performance guidance.
- Launch the title. Sign in to the correct Microsoft account, select the cloud-play option, and wait for the stream to establish.
Common problems and what they mean
The cloud-play button is missing
First check that the game is cloud-enabled for your plan, region, and device. A title may be in a catalog without being available on every platform. For an owned game, verify that it is one of Microsoft’s eligible streamable titles. Also check that you are signed in to the account carrying the entitlement.
The stream is blurry or keeps buffering
Measure download speed on the playing device, switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, move nearer to the router, and stop competing traffic. If the result is at or above Microsoft’s guidance but the stream remains unstable, the issue may be connection quality, routing, location, device limits, or service load; bandwidth alone is not a guarantee.
The controller works in menus but not in the game
Disconnect and reconnect it before starting the stream, try USB instead of Bluetooth where possible, and confirm that the game supports the controller layout. Touch controls, when offered, are an alternative only for titles that explicitly include them.

The TV or headset cannot find Xbox Cloud Gaming
Check the exact model and operating-system version against Microsoft’s supported-device list. “LG,” “Samsung,” “VIDAA,” “Fire TV,” or “Meta Quest” as a category does not mean every generation is eligible. If the model is supported, update its Xbox app and system software, then sign in again.
The session ends after the included time
Cloud-playtime allowances are monthly limits tied to the plan. Review the account’s remaining allowance and current upgrade or extra-hour options. The announced November 2026 owned-game purchase option and additional-hour pricing may not yet be available in every market.
Important limitations beyond speed
Cloud streaming can differ from local console or PC play. Microsoft warns that streamed games may have limitations involving video resolution, audio outputs, cloud-save storage, companion-app support, and peripherals. A game can therefore be playable in the cloud while offering a different experience from its installed version.
Catalog rights, plan benefits, prices, cloud-playtime limits, supported devices, and regional availability can change. Use the current Xbox service page, game listing, and device list for the final check before subscribing or purchasing hardware.

- Your country or region appears on Microsoft’s supported list.
- Your exact phone, tablet, PC, console, TV, Fire TV device, or Meta Quest headset is supported.
- The game is cloud-playable through your chosen access route.
- You understand whether the title needs Essential, Premium, Ultimate, a free account, or ownership of an eligible game.
- Your measured download speed is at least 10 Mbps; aim for Microsoft’s 20 Mbps guidance on consoles, PCs, and tablets.
- You have a compatible controller, or the game confirms touch controls.
- You have checked the plan’s monthly cloud-playtime allowance and any market-specific restrictions.
For most readers, the shortest path is a supported phone, PC, console, TV, or headset; a qualifying Microsoft account and game entitlement; a compatible controller; and a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. An Xbox console is optional, while the exact game, plan, device model, and region determine whether a particular session can start.
