One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf you choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) instead of AirPods Max 2, the main things you give up are Apple-specific conveniences: Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, and the tight handoff between Apple devices. Bose still provides extensive noise-control modes, app customization, Bluetooth use, USB-C digital audio, and an included analog cable. The practical cost of switching depends mostly on how deeply you use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple TV.
This is a specification-based comparison of the current generations, not a sound-quality or comfort test. The official pages checked for this comparison do not establish which headset cancels more noise, sounds better, handles calls better, or feels more comfortable for every listener.

The short answer: you lose Apple integration, not basic headphone functions
Both products are premium wireless over-ear headphones with active noise control. Bose gives you its own system of Quiet, Aware, Immersion, and Cinema modes, while AirPods Max 2 adds functions that are tied to Apple’s operating systems and hardware.

AirPods Max 2 is designed to work as part of the Apple device experience. Bose is designed to work across platforms, with the Bose app supplying settings and updates. Neither approach is universally better; they optimize for different priorities.

What AirPods Max 2 adds that Bose does not document
Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking
Apple lists Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking for AirPods Max 2. The feature uses an individual’s Apple-personalized audio profile and tracks head movement so supported spatial content appears anchored as the listener turns. Bose’s documented feature set for the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) uses its own modes and app controls instead. The Bose documentation supplied for this comparison does not list an equivalent Apple-style personalized, head-tracked feature.
Adaptive Audio
AirPods Max 2 includes Adaptive Audio in Apple’s listed functions. It automatically balances noise cancellation and environmental awareness rather than forcing you to pick a permanently isolated or transparent state. Bose instead exposes separate Quiet, Aware, Immersion, and Cinema modes, with mode behavior and customization handled in the Bose app.
Conversation Awareness
Conversation Awareness is another Apple-listed function. AirPods Max 2 can respond when you begin speaking by changing the listening experience so a brief conversation is easier without removing the headphones. Bose’s documentation describes Aware mode and ActiveSense, but it does not identify Apple’s conversation-triggered behavior as a feature of the Bose model.
Voice Isolation and Personalized Volume
Apple lists Voice Isolation and Personalized Volume for AirPods Max 2. These are system-level conveniences that use Apple’s software and device ecosystem. Bose documents access to the connected device’s voice assistant and app-based controls, but not those Apple features under the same names or with the same system integration.
Rank #2

Apple device continuity
The AirPods Max 2 feature list is aimed at people who move among Apple devices. Depending on the device and supported software, features such as automatic behavior changes, personalized audio settings, and other Apple-specific controls can be part of that workflow. The Bose headset can pair by Bluetooth, but its full feature set depends on the Bose app and its mode system rather than Apple continuity.
What Bose offers instead
Four documented listening modes
Bose documents Quiet, Aware, Immersion, and Cinema modes for the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen).
- Quiet: the Bose noise-control mode intended for maximum isolation.
- Aware: an environment-aware mode that lets outside sound in; Bose also documents ActiveSense behavior for this mode.
- Immersion: a Bose mode that combines noise control with the company’s immersive processing.
- Cinema: a mode intended for movie and video listening.
You can customize modes through the Bose app. The mode names are not one-to-one equivalents of Apple’s ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, or Conversation Awareness. They represent different control schemes, so choose based on the behavior you want rather than assuming that matching labels mean matching results.
Cross-platform Bluetooth and device-assistant access
Bose documents Bluetooth operation and access to the voice assistant on the connected device. The headset can connect without the app, but Bose says the app is needed for full features, changing settings, and software updates. That is a trade-off for users who do not want another app, but it also gives Bose a straightforward way to configure modes across supported phones and computers.
Rank #3
- NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES: Effortlessly combines noise cancellation technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat
- COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES: Plush over-ear cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your studio headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
- 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
- HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
- ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time
Apple-device owners should check these specific losses
| If you regularly use… | What AirPods Max 2 provides | What changes with Bose |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Apple-listed Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. | You use Bose modes and app settings instead; the Apple-specific functions are not documented for the Bose model. |
| Mac | AirPods Max 2 is part of Apple’s headphone workflow and supports the listed Apple functions where supported. | Bluetooth audio works, but Bose’s app and mode controls are the relevant management tools. |
| Apple Watch | AirPods Max 2 belongs to the same Apple ecosystem as the watch. | Pairing and control follow standard Bluetooth/Bose behavior rather than Apple’s integrated feature set. |
| Apple TV | AirPods Max 2 can use Apple’s listed spatial and adaptive features where supported by the content and software. | Bose supplies its own Cinema and Immersion modes; Apple-specific spatial personalization is not documented. |
| Android, Windows, or mixed devices | AirPods Max 2 can connect as Bluetooth headphones, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited on non-Apple devices. | Bose’s cross-platform Bluetooth approach may be the more predictable fit, although full Bose features still require its app. |
Wired listening is implemented differently
Bose: analog cable included, plus USB-C digital audio
Bose includes a 3.5 mm-to-2.5 mm audio cable with the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). That is useful for a laptop, airplane entertainment system, game controller, or another source with a standard 3.5 mm jack. Because the cable is included, buying a spare is a convenience choice rather than a requirement.
Bose also documents USB-C digital audio. Its product FAQ specifies 16-bit audio at 44.1 or 48 kHz for compatible source files. Bose describes this as digital and “lossless” audio, but that wording is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent measurement of end-to-end audio quality.
AirPods Max 2: USB-C lossless and low-latency claims
Apple lists lossless audio and ultra-low-latency audio via USB-C for AirPods Max 2. This may matter if you edit audio, play games, or want a wired USB-C workflow that avoids Bluetooth transmission. The implementation is different from Bose’s included analog lead and documented USB-C input, so inspect your computer, phone, console, and cable requirements before choosing.

Neither specification page establishes that one wired mode sounds better in a controlled comparison. The meaningful difference is connectivity: Bose gives you a conventional analog cable in the box and documents USB-C input; Apple emphasizes USB-C lossless and ultra-low-latency operation.

Battery life: Bose publishes the larger headline number, with an important qualification
| Model | Published endurance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Up to 30 hours | Bose’s model-specific support specification; Bose also says a 15-minute charge can provide up to 3 hours of use. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra production-representative test figure | Up to 24 hours without Immersive Audio | A separate footnote on Bose’s product page describing an April 2025 test of a production-representative QuietComfort Ultra model. |
| AirPods Max 2 | Up to 20 hours | Apple’s technical specification with Active Noise Cancellation enabled. |
On paper, Bose’s 30-hour model-specific claim exceeds Apple’s 20-hour figure. However, Bose’s own store page also contains a 24-hour test-footnote figure for a production-representative model. Those numbers come from different statements and are not a matched test protocol. Treat them as manufacturer specifications, not proof of a definitive real-world Bose advantage.
Weight: the published numbers favor Bose
Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at 13.6 ounces (386.2 grams). Bose lists the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) at 0.583 pounds, which is approximately 9.3 ounces by conversion. The difference is measurable on paper and may matter during long sessions, but weight alone cannot predict comfort. Head shape, clamp, pad fit, heat, glasses, and individual tolerance all affect the result.
Bose’s descriptions of fit and comfort are manufacturer claims. The available evidence does not include a matched independent comfort test, so do not treat the weight figures as a guaranteed comfort winner.
Replacement parts and ownership details
Bose support lists an ear cushion kit for this product family. The Apple specifications page checked for AirPods Max 2 does not document a comparable cushion kit. That does not establish that no Apple replacement option exists in every market; it means the checked specification page does not provide a like-for-like listing. Verify the exact generation, regional availability, and current stock before ordering any replacement part.

What you cannot conclude from these specifications
The documented differences answer the integration and connectivity question, but they do not settle several performance questions readers often ask:
- There is no matched independent test here proving that Bose cancels more or less noise than AirPods Max 2.
- There is no controlled listening test establishing which has better sound quality.
- There is no evidence in the supplied material that one has universally better microphone or call performance.
- There is no independent durability study or universal comfort verdict.
Those outcomes depend on firmware, fit, source material, listening mode, environment, and the listener. The safe conclusion is about documented features and trade-offs, not a blanket performance ranking.
Decision guide: when the Bose trade-off makes sense
Choose Bose if you need mixed-device flexibility
Bose is the more natural fit when your daily equipment includes Android phones, Windows PCs, Macs, tablets from different platforms, or shared devices. You still need the Bose app for full features, setting changes, and updates, but the core Bluetooth connection does not depend on owning Apple hardware.
Choose Bose if wired options are central
The included 3.5 mm-to-2.5 mm cable is a practical advantage for sources that lack Bluetooth or impose restrictions on wireless devices. Bose’s documented USB-C digital input adds another wired path, with 16-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz support for compatible source files.
Choose Bose if published endurance and lower listed weight matter most
Bose’s 30-hour support claim and 0.583-pound specification look favorable against Apple’s 20-hour ANC-on claim and 13.6-ounce weight. Keep the separate Bose 24-hour test footnote in mind, and remember that these are not results from a shared laboratory protocol.
Choose AirPods Max 2 if Apple features are part of your routine
AirPods Max 2 is the stronger fit when Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, and Apple-device continuity are features you will actually use. Choosing Bose means giving up those documented Apple-specific conveniences, even though you retain robust noise-control and app-based controls.
Checklist before you switch
- List every device you use for music, calls, video, and gaming, including whether it is Apple, Android, Windows, or another platform.
- Mark whether you need automatic conversation behavior, personalized spatial audio, or adaptive noise control. Those are the clearest AirPods Max 2-specific losses.
- Check whether your main wired source has a 3.5 mm output, USB-C audio, or neither.
- Decide whether Bose’s app requirement for full settings and updates fits your privacy, battery, and workflow preferences.
- Compare the published battery figures with your actual charging habits, while keeping Bose’s 30-hour and 24-hour statements separate.
- Try the fit if possible. The listed weights are useful specifications, not a substitute for personal comfort testing.
Bottom line
Choosing Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) instead of AirPods Max 2 primarily means losing Apple’s ecosystem layer. You give up Apple’s documented Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, and the associated Apple-device integration. In exchange, Bose offers a cross-platform-oriented experience with Quiet, Aware, Immersion, and Cinema modes, app customization, an included analog cable, documented USB-C audio, and higher published endurance and lower listed weight—subject to Bose’s own differing battery statements. If those Apple functions are central to your routine, the loss is substantial; if your priority is mixed-device use and flexible wired connectivity, it may be a worthwhile trade.
