USB-C, USB Power Delivery (USB PD), and GaN describe different parts of an Anker charger. USB-C is the connector shape, USB PD is a power-negotiation protocol, and GaN (gallium nitride) is a semiconductor material used in some charger circuitry. A USB-C port does not automatically support USB PD, and a GaN label does not tell you how many watts a port can deliver.

To choose correctly, check the exact model’s supported charging profiles, per-port limits, total output when several ports are occupied, cable requirements, and your device’s own charging capability.

The three labels at a glance

Label What it describes What it does not guarantee
USB-C The reversible connector and its interface USB PD, a particular wattage, fast data, USB4, or any specific fast-charge mode
USB Power Delivery A protocol that lets a charger and device negotiate voltage and current That every USB-C port supports PD, or that a device accepts the charger’s maximum output
GaN Gallium nitride semiconductor technology used in charger electronics A specific output profile, PD revision, PPS support, or proprietary phone charging mode
GaNPrime, PowerIQ and similar names Anker product branding for technologies or charging features Recognition as USB-IF standards or a universal performance level

USB-IF states this distinction directly: “USB Type-C® is not USB Power Delivery” and “These terms are not interchangeable.” Its USB Type-C terminology guidance also explains that a USB-C product may implement USB PD, USB4, USB 3.2, or none of those optional capabilities.

What USB-C means on an Anker charger

USB-C, also called USB Type-C, tells you the physical connector that accepts the cable. The plug is reversible, so it can be inserted either way. That convenience says nothing by itself about charging speed.

Manufacturers can use the same USB-C connector for a low-power port, a high-output laptop charger, a data connection, or a port supporting several USB standards. The product’s label and specification table determine which capabilities are actually implemented. A USB-C port might supply ordinary USB power without negotiating USB PD, while another USB-C port on the same charger might support high-voltage PD and PPS.

Do not infer data speed from the connector either. USB-C products can have different data capabilities, and a charger may provide no data connection at all. For a charging purchase, the relevant questions are the port’s voltage/current profiles and how its output changes when other ports are used.

What USB Power Delivery does

USB PD is a communication protocol. When a compatible charger and device are connected, they exchange information and select an electrical profile that both sides support. The device requests what it can use; the charger supplies an agreed level rather than forcing its maximum rating into the device.

USB-IF’s 2023 terminology guidance describes USB PD as increasing USB power capability to up to 240W. That is the protocol’s stated ceiling, not a promise that an Anker charger, cable, or laptop can deliver or accept 240W. A product may support only a subset of PD voltage and current combinations.

USB PD continues to evolve. The USB-IF document library lists USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2, dated September 14, 2026. That listing identifies the current published specification; it does not mean every charger implements that revision. Always use the model’s own manual or specification page to identify the profiles it supports. The current listing is available in the USB-IF USB Power Delivery library.

PD is not the same as every fast-charge system

Many phones also use manufacturer-specific charging methods. A charger can support USB PD and still fail to provide a brand’s highest proprietary charging rate. Conversely, a charger can advertise a fast-charge feature without offering every PD profile. Confirm the device maker’s supported standards, not just the presence of a USB-C port or a PD logo.

What GaN means

GaN stands for gallium nitride, a semiconductor material used in power-conversion components. Anker describes its GaN chargers as replacing conventional silicon-based components with gallium nitride. Its product pages associate GaN with compact designs and high output.

Those are manufacturer claims about the design advantages. The available product information does not establish an independent, named laboratory comparison proving that every GaN charger is cooler, more efficient, faster, or longer-lasting than every silicon charger. GaN is a component technology, not a charging protocol. It does not specify PD support, PPS, output wattage, cable type, or compatibility with a particular phone or computer.

You can read Anker’s current product-category explanation on its GaN charger collection page. Treat the GaN badge as information about the charger’s internal semiconductor choice, then inspect the electrical specifications separately.

How Anker branding fits in

Names such as GaNPrime and PowerIQ are Anker branding. They can identify a family of hardware or charging-management features, but they are not USB-IF standards. The practical information is in the specification table: supported PD and PPS profiles, maximum output from each port, total combined output, and any cable or device conditions.

For example, a listing may mention PowerIQ 4.0 and PPS while also giving a detailed table of voltages, currents, and port-sharing rules. The table is the part to use when checking a laptop or phone. Branding can help you find a product family, but it cannot replace the model number and its regional specification.

Total wattage is not the same as one port’s wattage

A charger’s large headline number normally means the maximum output across all ports under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. It does not mean every port can provide that number, nor that the number remains available when several devices are connected.

Example model Total rating Important port figures What to verify
Anker 737 Charger (GaNPrime 120W) 120W total maximum Either of two USB-C ports is listed up to 100W individually; USB-C1 plus USB-C2 has a listed 120W combined maximum Other port combinations, regional version, and the exact allocation table
Anker Prime Charger (250W, 6 Ports, GaNPrime) Up to 250W total USB-C1 up to 140W; USB-C2, C3 and C4 up to 100W each Combined limits for the selected ports and the cable/device conditions for 140W

The 737 figures come from Anker’s current 737 specification page. The six-port Prime figures and its port-sharing combinations are in Anker’s Prime 250W specification. Both pages are model and region dependent, so check the listing for the exact unit you intend to buy.

Why this matters in daily use

Suppose a charger can provide 100W from one USB-C port when used alone. Connecting a second laptop, tablet, or phone can trigger a different allocation. The first port may receive less than 100W, or the charger may divide power according to a table of port combinations. A 250W total rating similarly does not make 250W available to one device unless the specified port and conditions allow it.

How to choose the right GaN charger

  1. Start with the device. Check the device maker’s recommended charging wattage and supported standards. A laptop that requires a 65W USB-C PD supply has different needs from a phone that accepts 27W PD or a proprietary mode.
  2. Identify the exact Anker model. Record the model number, port count, and region. Product names can cover multiple revisions or geographic versions.
  3. Confirm the port profile. Look for USB PD and, where relevant, PPS. Read the voltage/current combinations rather than relying on “USB-C,” “GaN,” or a family name.
  4. Check single-port output. Match the maximum from the port you will actually use to the device’s requirement. A high total number is not a substitute for this check.
  5. Read the simultaneous-use table. If you will charge a laptop and phone together, find the exact two-port or three-port combination. The available output may change as soon as another cable is inserted.
  6. Check cable requirements. High-power modes can require a cable with the appropriate current and wattage rating. Anker specifies a cable condition for 140W operation with certain MacBook Pro generations on the Prime 250W page.
  7. Allow for the device’s own limit. A 140W or 250W charger does not force that power into a smaller device. The device negotiates what it supports, so extra charger capacity is a ceiling, not an input requirement.

Cables, devices and geography can change the result

The charger is only one part of the charging system. The cable must be capable of the requested current and, for some extended-power modes, must identify its rating correctly. A lower-rated or unsuitable cable can reduce the negotiated power even when the charger and device both advertise a higher level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The device’s firmware, charging circuitry, battery temperature, and state of charge can also change the instantaneous draw. A laptop may accept its highest rate only under specified conditions, while a phone may switch to a lower rate as the battery fills. These behaviors are normal and do not mean the charger is delivering its headline wattage continuously.

Regional models deserve separate attention. Plug type, certification, port arrangement, firmware, and published specifications can differ by market. Use the manual or service page for the model sold in your country rather than copying figures from a different region.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“It has USB-C, so it must have PD.”

Correction: USB-C identifies the connector. Look for an explicit PD profile in the model’s specifications.

“GaN means it charges faster.”

Correction: GaN describes semiconductor material. Charging speed depends on the negotiated protocol, voltage/current profile, cable, device, and thermal conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A 250W charger gives my laptop 250W.”

Correction: Read the single-port maximum and the multi-port allocation table. Total output is shared and model-specific.

“Any USB-C cable will unlock the highest mode.”

Correction: Verify the cable’s wattage/current rating and any model-specific requirement, especially for outputs above ordinary laptop charging levels.

“USB PD guarantees my phone’s proprietary fast charge.”

Correction: Check whether the phone accepts standard PD or requires a separate manufacturer-specific method. PD support alone is not a universal fast-charge guarantee.

A practical compatibility check before buying

  • Write down the device’s required or supported wattage.
  • Confirm whether it uses USB PD, PPS, or another charging system.
  • Choose the Anker port whose individual rating meets that requirement.
  • Check the output table for every combination you expect to use.
  • Confirm the cable rating and any stated laptop-generation or device condition.
  • Verify the exact model identifier and regional listing.
  • Remember that a larger charger supplies capability headroom; the device still negotiates its own safe level.

Once those checks match, the labels become easy to interpret: USB-C tells you how the connection is made, USB PD tells you how compatible devices negotiate power, and GaN tells you something about the charger’s internal switching components. None of the three, by itself, is a complete specification.
