What Do the Symbols on a Washing Machine Detergent Drawer Mean?

On many washing machines, I marks the prewash detergent compartment, II marks the main-wash detergent compartment, and a flower marks the fabric-softener compartment. Those meanings are common, but they are not universal. Drawer layouts, removable inserts, automatic dosing systems and permitted additives vary by model. If your symbols or compartments do not match this pattern, the manual for your exact washer is the deciding source.

The three symbols you will see most often

Manufacturers commonly use a simple numbering and pictogram system. The numbers describe stages of the wash programme, while the flower identifies a finishing additive rather than detergent.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Marking Typical function When to use it Limits and cautions
I (sometimes a single bar or “1”) Prewash detergent Only when the selected programme includes a prewash and the washer instructions call for a prewash dose Do not add a prewash dose to every cycle; many programmes skip this stage
II (sometimes two bars or “2”) Main-wash detergent For the detergent used during the principal wash stage The compartment does not by itself approve every liquid, powder, bleach or stain product
Flower or flower-like symbol Fabric softener; on some models, liquid starch For the final rinse additive specified by the manual Stay below the compartment’s maximum line; confirm any use other than softener

Bosch’s general symbol guide uses these meanings but warns that its illustration is not specific to every model. A Bosch operating manual, Samsung support information and LG support information also show that dispenser designs differ. Treat the table as a starting point, not a substitute for the manual supplied with your appliance.

What does I mean in a washing-machine drawer?

I normally means prewash detergent. A prewash is a short preliminary wash intended for heavily soiled loads before the main wash. If you choose a programme with a prewash option, place the instructed prewash dose in compartment I. The machine draws it in during that preliminary stage.

When compartment I should stay empty

Leave I empty when the selected programme has no prewash. Adding detergent there “just in case” can waste product, leave residue in the drawer or release detergent at a stage when it is not useful. Some machines offer a separate prewash button, while others build prewash into a named programme. Read the cycle description on the control panel and in the manual before dosing.

How much detergent belongs in I?

The symbol tells you the stage, not the quantity. Use the washer manual and the detergent packaging to determine the dose for load size, soil level, water hardness and detergent concentration. A prewash dose may be smaller than the main-wash dose, but the correct amount is product- and model-dependent.

What does II mean in a washing-machine drawer?

II normally means the main-wash detergent compartment. This is the drawer used for detergent in the principal cleaning stage on machines that follow the common I/II layout. If you are running a standard cotton, mixed-fabric, synthetic or similar programme without prewash, II is usually the only detergent compartment you need.

Powder, liquid and capsules are not interchangeable by symbol alone

The number II identifies the wash stage, not the physical form of detergent that every machine accepts. A model may have a removable liquid-detergent flap, a measuring insert or instructions to place a single-dose product elsewhere. Some manuals specify that a liquid insert is used only for certain programmes or removed for others.

Check three things before adding product:

  • The washer manual’s instructions for powder, liquid and single-dose detergents.
  • The detergent label’s dosing and placement directions.
  • Any fill line or insert inside the compartment.

Do not infer that bleach, stain remover, disinfectant or another additive is approved for II merely because a particular manufacturer lists an additional use for one model. Permission differs between appliances.

What is the flower symbol for?

The flower usually marks the fabric-softener compartment. The machine releases this compartment during a later rinse so the softener is diluted and distributed after the main cleaning action. The flower may be a small blossom, a stylised flower or a similar pictogram.

Use the maximum line

Pour softener only to the marked maximum line. Overfilling can cause the liquid to be siphoned too early, leave residue in the drawer or transfer an excessive amount to laundry. If the compartment has no obvious line, consult the manual rather than filling it to the top.

Liquid starch and other additives

Bosch identifies liquid starch as an allowed use of the flower-marked compartment on relevant instructions, but that does not establish permission on every washer. Confirm starch, fragrance additives or any other product in your own manual and follow the product label. Never assume that a fabric-softener compartment is suitable for bleach or concentrated cleaners.

Where are the compartments located?

There is no universal left-to-right arrangement. On one drawer, I may be on the left, II in the middle and the flower on the right; another model can reverse positions or use a different shape. Automatic dispensers may combine, label or hide compartments behind a cover. Position alone is therefore unreliable.

Pull the drawer out far enough to expose the embossed symbols, printed labels and any removable insert. Some markings are moulded into translucent plastic and are easier to see when the drawer is fully open or cleaned. If you see only pictures, compare them with the manual rather than guessing from location.

How to identify the correct compartment step by step

  1. Pause the machine and open the drawer. Do not pour product into a compartment you cannot identify.
  2. Read every marking. Look for I, II, a flower, bars, words such as “prewash” or “softener,” and arrows or fill lines.
  3. Check for inserts. A hinged flap or removable cup can change how liquid detergent is dispensed. Note its position before removing it.
  4. Match the wash stage. Use I only when the selected cycle includes prewash. Use II for the main-wash detergent when your manual uses the conventional numbering.
  5. Measure the finishing additive. Put fabric softener in the flower compartment only when the manual confirms it, and stay below the maximum mark.
  6. Verify the product directions. Confirm whether your detergent is powder, liquid, capsule or another formulation and follow its stated dose.
  7. Run the programme and observe the result. If detergent remains, softener disappears too early or water enters an unexpected section, stop and consult the model-specific troubleshooting guidance.

Why the common pattern is not universal

Different dispenser layouts

Samsung describes several drawer types, including designs with separate sections and automatic dispensers. LG likewise describes detergent and additive compartments that vary by washer. A compact front-loader, a top-loader with a built-in dispenser and a high-capacity machine can all present different shapes and labels while performing the same basic functions.

Automatic dosing systems

Some washers store detergent and softener in reservoirs and meter them automatically. Their compartments may be labelled for detergent type, reservoir filling or a specific product rather than simply I and II. Do not pour a concentrated product into a reservoir unless the manual says it is compatible, and do not assume that a manually dosed capsule belongs in a numbered section.

Model-specific liquid-detergent aids

A removable measuring aid can sit inside the main-wash section. Bosch manuals describe restrictions on when such an aid is used; it is a model-dependent component, not a universal symbol. Follow the instructions for installing, removing and cleaning it. The existence of an insert does not prove that liquid detergent must always go in the drawer, nor that it must always go directly in the drum.

What to do when the symbols do not match

Use the exact model number from the rating plate or control panel to locate the appliance manual. Samsung directs owners to the product-specific manual, and the same approach is appropriate for any brand. Search the manual for “detergent drawer,” “dispenser,” “prewash,” “softener,” “liquid detergent” and “automatic dosing.”

  • Words instead of symbols: Follow the words; they are the manufacturer’s direct labels for that model.
  • No I compartment: The washer may not support a prewash dose, or it may use a combined compartment with an insert.
  • No flower: Softener may be handled by a separate cup, a top-loader agitator dispenser or an automatic reservoir.
  • Several small sections: Check whether one is for bleach, stain treatment or a specialty additive. Never identify these by shape alone.
  • Symbols are worn or hidden: Use the manual diagram and compare the physical dividers before adding anything.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Putting main-wash detergent in I

This can release detergent during a prewash or leave the main wash without enough cleaning agent. Move the main-wash dose to II on machines that use the standard layout, and use I only for a selected prewash.

Putting softener in II

Softener placed in the detergent section can be rinsed away at the wrong time and may not reach fabrics as intended. Clean the drawer if residue has formed, then use the flower section only as specified by the manual.

Filling the flower compartment above its line

Overfilling can trigger early siphoning and spills. Remove excess liquid, wipe the drawer and keep future fills below the maximum mark.

Assuming every additive belongs in II

Detergent, bleach, oxygen stain products and specialty liquids have different compatibility requirements. Check both the washer manual and the additive label; the II symbol alone is not approval.

Ignoring the insert for liquid detergent

If liquid pools in the drawer, drains immediately or remains after a cycle, inspect the liquid-detergent flap or measuring aid. Its correct position may depend on the programme. Use the model’s instructions rather than forcing the insert or switching placement by guesswork.

Using too much product

Excess detergent or softener can create suds, residue, poor rinsing and odour. Dose according to the product label and the washer’s guidance, taking account of load size and water conditions.

Do you put detergent in I or II?

For an ordinary wash without prewash, detergent normally goes in II. For a programme that explicitly includes prewash, put the instructed prewash dose in I and the main-wash dose in II, provided your model uses the conventional markings. The manual overrides this rule if the drawer has a different arrangement or an automatic dosing system.

A quick decision checklist before starting a load

  • Does the programme include a prewash? If yes, check the instructions for a dose in I.
  • Which compartment is labelled for the main wash? Usually II, but verify the model marking.
  • Is the finishing additive compartment marked with a flower or a word such as “softener”?
  • Is there a maximum line, hinged flap, measuring cup or reservoir setting?
  • Does the detergent or additive label specify a different placement or dose?
  • Are you using an automatic dispenser that needs to be enabled or filled separately?

When the manual and the drawer appear to disagree

Stop and resolve the discrepancy before running the cycle. Compare the model number on the appliance with the model number in the manual; similar product names can cover different revisions. Photographing the open drawer and its markings can help a service technician identify the dispenser. Do not rely on a generic internet diagram when the physical dividers, inserts or reservoir labels differ.

If detergent remains in a compartment, the drawer is difficult to open or water does not flush through a section, clean the drawer and its channels according to the manual. Persistent filling or siphoning problems can indicate a blocked inlet or dispenser fault and may require qualified service. Keep the appliance manual and the detergent packaging available when seeking help.

The practical rule to remember

Use I for a confirmed prewash, II for the confirmed main wash and the flower for confirmed fabric softener. Then verify the exact drawer diagram, insert position, product type and dose in your washer manual and on the product label. That combination is safer than relying on a symbol in isolation, because manufacturers do not use one identical dispenser design across all machines.
