What Do the Different Curly Hair Types Mean, and How Do You Identify Yours?

The familiar curl scale is a visual shorthand for pattern: Type 2 describes waves, Type 3 describes curls, and Type 4 describes coils. Within each family, A, B, and C generally move from a looser pattern to a tighter one. The labels help you describe what your hair does, but they are not laboratory measurements or a complete hair-care prescription.

To estimate your pattern, wash your hair, let it air-dry without styling products, and compare several sections with a 2A–4C chart. Record more than one label if different areas form different shapes. Your result is a starting description that can shift with moisture, humidity, product buildup, chemical processing, and styling.

The curl scale at a glance

The commonly used scale begins with 2A waves and runs through Type 3 curls to Type 4 coils. The number identifies the broad pattern family; the letter identifies a subtype within that family. A subtypes are usually the loosest, B subtypes sit in the middle, and C subtypes are the tightest or most compact in that number group.

Number Pattern family What to look for
Type 2 Waves Bends that usually form S shapes rather than complete spirals
Type 3 Curls Visible spirals or ringlets that wrap around themselves
Type 4 Coils Springy coils, zigzags, or tightly compact bends that may not form an obvious ringlet

These categories are illustrative. There is no accepted laboratory cutoff that turns one subtype into another, so two people can reasonably place similar hair in neighboring categories. Pattern shape, tightness, definition, and where the bend begins along the strand are more useful than trying to measure a curl with a ruler.

What each 2A–4C type looks like

2A: slight, loose waves

2A hair has a gentle bend that may look almost straight when it is brushed or weighed down. The wave often appears farther down the strand rather than right at the root. It can lose definition easily, so freshly washed, product-free hair may show a softer pattern than hair styled with a wave-enhancing product.

2B: defined, beachy S waves

2B hair forms clearer S-shaped waves, while the roots often lie flatter than the lengths. The bends are more visible than 2A but do not usually complete a spiral. Look for repeated wave movement through several sections instead of a single pronounced bend caused by sleeping on wet hair or tying it up.

2C: structured waves near the curl boundary

2C is the most structured wave subtype. Its S shapes are often larger, stronger, and more voluminous, and some strands may begin to twist toward a loose curl. If the hair alternates between strong waves and occasional spirals, a 2C description may fit better than a uniform Type 3 label.

3A: loose, wide curls

3A hair forms broad spirals that are easy to recognize when the hair is allowed to dry without being stretched. The loops are relatively open and may elongate under their own weight. Check several curls: a few isolated ringlets do not necessarily make the whole head 3A.

3B: tighter, compact curls

3B curls have a smaller circumference and a more compact appearance than 3A curls. Ringlets are usually obvious through much of the length, with less open space inside each loop. Sections can still vary, especially around the hairline, crown, or areas affected by heat or chemical services.

3C: condensed ringlets

3C is the tightest Type 3 subtype. Ringlets are densely packed and can look corkscrew-like, with less distance between neighboring curls. The pattern remains recognizably spiral-based, which distinguishes it from the less consistently defined shapes common in Type 4 hair.

4A: springy S-shaped coils

4A hair forms small, springy coils with an identifiable S pattern. The coils can contract substantially as they dry, so the visible length after air-drying may be much shorter than the wet length. Definition can vary from one section to another without changing the overall coil family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4B: Z-shaped bends

4B hair is associated with sharper, Z-shaped changes in direction rather than a continuous O-shaped ringlet. The bends may look angular or folded when viewed closely. Some strands can show a mixture of curved and angular sections, so inspect the dominant shape across the head.

4C: mixed, tightly compact coils and zigzags

4C hair can include curls, coils, and zigzags that are difficult to distinguish as one repeatable shape. It often has the least obvious single pattern in the chart, which is why a 4C classification should not be treated as a failure to find a curl. The useful observation is that the bends are very tight or compact and may not form consistently defined ringlets.

How to identify your pattern step by step

  1. Start with clean hair. Wash thoroughly enough to remove the styling products, oils, and buildup that could weigh down or clump the strands. Do not judge the pattern immediately after applying gel, cream, mousse, or heavy conditioner.
  2. Let it air-dry without styling products. The product-free, air-dried result gives you a consistent baseline for seeing the natural bends. Avoid stretching, braiding, twisting, or heat-drying during this observation.
  3. Inspect several sections. Look at the crown, sides, nape, hairline, and underneath layers. Note where the pattern starts: near the root, midway down, or only at the ends. One especially curly strand should not determine the label for your whole head.
  4. Classify the shape first. Decide whether the dominant movement is a loose S wave, a more defined S wave, an O-shaped spiral, a springy coil, or a sharper Z-shaped bend. Shape is more reliable than a visual comparison with a household object such as a pencil or marker; those analogies are not standardized measurements.
  5. Compare tightness within the family. Once you know whether you are mainly seeing waves, curls, or coils, compare the openness and compactness of the bends to the A, B, and C descriptions. A wider, looser version generally sits nearer A; a smaller, denser version generally sits nearer C.
  6. Record mixed patterns. You might describe one area as 2C and another as 3A, or the crown as 4B and the perimeter as 4C. Writing down the combination is more accurate than forcing every section into one category.
  7. Repeat under comparable conditions if needed. Humidity, moisture level, product residue, chemical processing, and recent heat styling can change how much a strand bends. If the result seems unusual, repeat the wash-and-air-dry observation rather than treating a single day as definitive.

How to distinguish neighboring patterns

Comparison Key question Typical visual clue
2A vs. 2B How consistently does the S bend repeat? 2A is faint and loose; 2B shows clearer waves through the lengths.
2B vs. 2C Does the wave have strong structure and volume? 2C has more pronounced S shapes and may approach a loose spiral.
2C vs. 3A Do strands complete a loop? 2C is primarily an S wave; 3A forms broad, recognizable spirals.
3A vs. 3B How open is each ringlet? 3B curls are smaller and more compact than 3A curls.
3B vs. 3C How densely packed are the ringlets? 3C ringlets are tighter and more condensed.
3C vs. 4A Is the dominant form a ringlet or a coil? 3C remains visibly spiral-based; 4A has springy, tighter coils.
4A vs. 4B Is the bend rounded or angular? 4A commonly shows an S-shaped coil; 4B is associated with Z-shaped turns.
4B vs. 4C Can you identify a repeating dominant shape? 4B often shows identifiable angles; 4C may mix shapes without one clear repeat.

Why one head can have several curl types

Mixed patterns are normal. Hair grows from follicles with different characteristics, and sections can also experience different levels of friction, sun exposure, heat, chemical processing, or handling. The scale is designed to describe visible pattern, not to declare that every strand on a head is identical.

Use a combined description when it communicates your hair more accurately. For example, “mostly 3B with 3A at the front” tells a stylist or product formulator more than a single number that hides the variation. You can also track changes over time if a previously processed area grows out or if your routine changes the amount of definition you see.

What the label does not tell you

A curl number and letter describe pattern and relative tightness. They do not, by themselves, measure strand fineness or coarseness, density, scalp condition, breakage, or which routine will work best. Two people with the same 3C label can have very different strand thicknesses, amounts of hair, porosity, or tolerance for specific ingredients; those differences affect care decisions even though they do not change the visual subtype.

Pattern can also look different from day to day. Moisture, humidity, product weight, buildup, chemical treatments, and heat can loosen, tighten, stretch, or obscure a bend. A temporarily elongated curl is not necessarily a permanent change in type, and a frizzy day does not prove that the underlying pattern has disappeared.

Care principles that apply across curl patterns

The American Academy of Dermatology Association advises treating curly or tightly coiled hair according to its condition rather than relying on a label alone. Its guidance emphasizes conditioning and gentle wet detangling, while noting that trial and error may be necessary to find a workable routine.

  • Condition along the length. Curly or dry hair benefits from conditioner applied through the lengths rather than only at the scalp. Adjust the amount to your hair’s response; excessive weight can flatten waves, while too little slip can make detangling rough.
  • Detangle wet hair with a wide-tooth comb. Work from the ends upward and use sections when that gives you more control. A wide-tooth comb is a detangling tool, not a way to identify curl type.
  • Avoid dry brushing when it disrupts the pattern. Brushing dry curls or coils can separate clumps and create unnecessary frizz or breakage. If you need to reshape the hair, use a method that preserves the existing bends.
  • Reduce nighttime friction. A loose braid or a loose “pineapple” arrangement can help limit rubbing while you sleep. Keep the tie loose enough that it does not pull at the hairline.
  • Change one variable at a time. If you are adjusting products or technique, alter one step and observe the result over several wash days. This makes it easier to tell whether the change affected definition, softness, volume, or manageability.

“Trial and error are often needed to find the best routine for curly or tightly coiled hair, so do not get discouraged if a certain product does not work for your hair type.” — American Academy of Dermatology Association

Choosing the tightest strand

A single ringlet or coil can be an outlier. Base the description on several sections and state the mixture when the differences are substantial.

Confusing frizz with a new type

Frizz describes strands that are not grouped smoothly; it does not identify whether the underlying pattern is a wave, curl, or coil. Examine individual bends underneath the surface rather than judging only the halo of flyaways.

Treating a chart as a diagnosis

The categories are visual shorthand, not a medical assessment. If you have persistent scalp symptoms, sudden texture changes, or significant breakage, address those concerns separately with a qualified dermatologist or hair professional.

Using your result productively

Once you have observed your pattern, use the label to communicate a starting point: “mostly 2B,” “3A with tighter sections,” or “4B/4C mix.” Then evaluate the characteristics the chart leaves out—strand thickness, density, moisture response, scalp comfort, and how the hair behaves during detangling. That combination gives you a more useful basis for choosing techniques than a single alphanumeric label.

Recheck the pattern after major changes such as growing out chemical processing, recovering from heat damage, or changing how you wash and dry. The goal is not to earn one permanent classification; it is to describe the hair you have under consistent conditions and adapt care to how it actually responds.
