Breville espresso-machine buttons are not standardized across the range. The correct meaning depends on the model number, revision, and market. Find that number on the label underneath or behind the machine, or on the original packaging, then use the manual for that exact model. Breville’s support catalog covers 14 espresso-machine models, including the Bambino, Barista Express, Barista Touch, and Oracle families.
The examples below explain the controls documented for the Bambino Plus (BES500), Bambino (BES450), Barista Touch (BES880), and Barista Express Impress (BES876). Do not transfer a label or procedure from one model to another without checking its manual.

Why the model number matters
A button marked “1 Cup” can be a fixed-volume shortcut on one machine and part of a programmable or manual-extraction workflow on another. Some Breville machines use a small button panel; others put drink settings on a touchscreen. Milk controls may be separate, combined, or absent, and grind size may be controlled by a physical dial rather than by the display.

- Read the model number from the bottom or rear label, or from the packaging.
- Confirm the country or region, because manuals and electrical specifications can vary.
- Use the manual revision that matches the model, rather than a similar-looking machine.
- Check whether a feature belongs to the base model or a “Plus,” “Touch,” or “Impress” variant.
This prevents the most common mistake: applying Bambino Plus instructions to the simpler Bambino, or expecting a touchscreen control on a button-based machine.

Bambino Plus (BES500): what each control does
1 Cup and 2 Cup buttons
On the Bambino Plus, 1 Cup and 2 Cup select programmed single- and double-shot volumes. The BES500 manual describes approximately 30 ml for the preset single and approximately 60 ml for the preset double. These are programmed liquid volumes, not a promise that every coffee dose, cup, or beverage will be the same size. Coffee grind, dose, tamping, and the cup under the spout still affect the result.
Press the button for the shot you want after the portafilter is locked in and the machine is ready. The machine runs the saved program and stops at its programmed volume unless you intervene.
Manual pre-infusion and manual extraction
Holding a shot button gives you manual control over the start of the brew:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press and hold 1 Cup or 2 Cup.
- The machine begins manual pre-infusion while you hold the button.
- Release the button to begin extraction.
- When enough espresso has flowed, press the flashing shot button to stop.
This procedure is different from simply tapping the button for its saved preset. It lets you choose when pre-infusion ends and when the shot stops, which is useful when a particular coffee or basket needs a different volume.
Programming a new shot volume
To replace the saved single- or double-shot volume on the BES500, use the programming sequence in the manual:
- Press and hold both shot buttons for about two seconds.
- Press the shot button you want to program.
- Allow the espresso to run to the desired amount.
- Press that same shot button again to stop and save the new volume.
Program the single and double buttons separately if you want different saved amounts. A programmed volume is a machine setting; it does not automatically compensate for a finer grind, a larger dose, or a different coffee.
Milk Temp
Milk Temp cycles through three choices: Warm, Ideal, and Hot. The Bambino Plus remembers the last selected milk-temperature setting when it is switched on. Temperature and foam are independent: changing one does not select the other.
Rank #2
- MICROFOAM MILK TEXTURING: Cappuccino maker and latte machine has an automatic steam wand allowing you to adjust milk temperature and texture, creating barista-quality microfoam for latte art at home
- FASTER HEAT UP TIME: Espresso maker includes innovative ThermoJet heating system that achieves optimum extraction temperature in 3 seconds; Make your own cappuccinos and lattes at home without waiting
- BALANCED-TASTING CUP: Manual espresso machine features low pressure pre infusion that gradually increases pressure at the start; All flavors are drawn out evenly during the extraction
- RECEIVE 2 FREE BAGS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE: Included when you purchase and register any Breville coffee machine; T&Cs apply
- HOME ESPRESSO MACHINE WITH PRECISE EXTRACTION: Digital temperature regulation (PID) delivers water at precisely the right temperature, allowing for even espresso extraction
Milk Foam
Milk Foam cycles through Low, Medium, and High. The last selected foam setting is retained at startup. Different dairy and plant-based milks texture differently, so the same setting can produce more or less foam depending on the milk in the jug. If the texture is too airy, select a lower level; if it is too flat, try a higher level and check the jug position and fill level.
Bambino (BES450): similar names, fewer controls
The standard Bambino is not the same control panel as the Bambino Plus. The cited BES450 comparison lists four primary buttons: 1 Cup, 2 Cup, Hot Water, and Steam. Do not look for the Plus-only Milk Temp and Milk Foam labels on this model.
Because the labels and operating sequence differ, use the BES450 manual for shot programming, steaming, and hot-water operation. A Bambino Plus procedure should not be treated as a universal Bambino instruction merely because the names are similar.
Barista Touch (BES880): settings on the touchscreen
Selecting and editing a drink
The Barista Touch starts with a drink-selection menu. Tap a drink, then adjust the controls shown on that drink’s screen. The manual shows controls for:
- Grind duration
- Milk temperature
- Milk froth level
- Brew settings
For espresso, the interface can offer single, double, or custom extraction-time choices. An Americano can present size choices. The exact controls visible can depend on the drink selected, so edit the drink screen rather than searching for one global settings page.
Where to change grind size
Grind size is not changed by touching the on-screen grind control. On the Barista Touch, turn the physical dial on the side of the machine. The touchscreen setting concerns grind duration; the side dial changes the coarseness or fineness of the grind. If an on-screen adjustment appears unavailable, check that you are not trying to use the display for the mechanical grind-size dial.
Keeping the display responsive
Keep the touchscreen dry and clean, as the manual directs. Moisture, coffee residue, or milk on the display can make taps unreliable or obscure the setting you are trying to change. Clean the screen before troubleshooting a missing or unresponsive control.

Barista Express Impress (BES876): physical controls and dosing assistance
Breville describes the BES876 interface on its product page as “Simple button control.” In practical terms, its documented controls include preset single and double shots, hot water, adjustable brew temperature, and adjustable volumetric shot control. It also has 25 grind settings, a 54 mm portafilter, and manual milk texturing.

The model’s official support material includes tutorials for manual dosing and for adjusting shot volume and temperature. That means the buttons provide convenient presets, while the machine still allows you to tune extraction rather than being limited to one fixed recipe.
The 54 mm measurement applies to this model’s portafilter. If you buy a replacement portafilter, basket, or dosing accessory, verify both the machine model and the basket design before purchase; a diameter alone does not guarantee compatibility.
How the main Breville controls differ
| Model | Interface | Shot control | Milk settings | Grind control | Hot-water control |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bambino Plus (BES500) | Dedicated buttons | Preset approximately 30 ml single and 60 ml double; manual pre-infusion; programmable volume | Milk Temp: Warm, Ideal, Hot; Milk Foam: Low, Medium, High | Not stated for the cited BES500 control description | Not stated in the cited BES500 button description |
| Bambino (BES450) | Dedicated buttons | Use the BES450 manual; do not assume BES500 programming steps | Separate Plus-only Milk Temp and Milk Foam labels are not listed | Not stated in the cited comparison | Dedicated Hot Water button |
| Barista Touch (BES880) | Touchscreen plus a physical side dial | Espresso single, double, or custom extraction time; Americano size choices | On-screen milk temperature and froth controls | Side dial; grind size cannot be changed by tapping the screen | Drink-dependent touchscreen choices |
| Barista Express Impress (BES876) | Physical button control | Preset single/double shots plus adjustable volumetric shot control | Manual milk texturing | 25 grind settings | Dedicated hot-water function |
“Not stated” means the cited model material does not establish that feature; it is not evidence that the machine lacks it. Consult the exact manual for a complete control legend.
Changing shot size without creating a new problem
Shot volume is only one part of extraction. If you increase the programmed volume but leave the dose and grind unchanged, the drink can taste weaker or more bitter as more water passes through the coffee. Change one variable at a time and record the setting you prefer.

- On a touchscreen model, distinguish extraction time, grind duration, and drink size; they are different controls.
The Bambino Plus programming sequence saves a volume for the selected shot button. It does not save a universal recipe for every coffee bean or basket.

On the Bambino Plus, select temperature and foam independently before steaming. Start with Ideal temperature and Medium foam, then adjust based on the milk and drink. Warm and Low can suit a less-heated, flatter drink; Hot and High produce a hotter, more aerated result, but the milk itself still determines how easily it textures.

On the Barista Touch, the same decisions appear on the drink screen as milk temperature and milk froth controls. On the standard Bambino, those Plus labels are not part of the documented panel. This is why an icon that seems “missing” may simply belong to a different model.
When a button or icon does not behave as expected
The machine has different labels
Recheck the model number and region before troubleshooting. Bambino and Bambino Plus are separate models, and a Barista Touch screen cannot be used as a reference for a button-only machine.
The shot stops at an unexpected amount
On the Bambino Plus, determine whether you pressed a preset, entered manual pre-infusion, or changed the saved volume. A programmed shot can differ from the approximately 30 ml or 60 ml factory examples. Reprogram only after confirming the basket, dose, and desired volume.
The grind setting cannot be changed on screen
On the Barista Touch, turn the physical side dial. The manual specifically separates that adjustment from touchscreen controls.
Milk is too foamy or not foamy enough
On the Bambino Plus, adjust Milk Foam separately from Milk Temp and account for the milk type. On the Barista Touch, use the froth control on the selected drink screen. If the result changes between cartons, that can be a milk-texturing difference rather than a failed button.
The touchscreen does not respond
Clean and dry the display, then reopen the drink screen. If the control still differs from the manual, verify the model and manual revision before changing other settings.

Maintenance controls and compatible supplies
Cleaning tablets, descaling solution, and water filters are maintenance supplies Breville lists for its machines. Their use and replacement intervals are model-specific. Check the exact manual and compatibility information before inserting a tablet, filter, or accessory.
Do not assume that a 54 mm portafilter or basket fits every Breville machine. Confirm the model, basket type, and locking arrangement. The same caution applies to replacement filters and cleaning products.
