A Samsung Galaxy model number identifies a product range or a regional or carrier variant, not one unique handset. Read the entire code—such as SM-G988B—before buying an accessory or replacement part. The model code tells you which version the phone belongs to; the serial number identifies your individual device, and the 15-digit IMEI identifies the phone for communications networks.
What a Samsung Galaxy model number actually identifies
Samsung uses model numbers to group products that share a design and platform. Samsung Electronics Spain gives SM-G988 as a base model code shared by Galaxy S20 Ultra products and SM-G973 as a base code shared by Galaxy S10 products. In other words, the code is more specific than a marketing name such as “Galaxy S20,” but it is not the unique identity of your particular phone.

A complete code can also identify a market or carrier build. For example, Samsung’s Knox documentation lists Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G variants as SM-G988B, SM-G988N, SM-G988U and SM-G988W. Those phones share the same base product code but have different trailing letters. Samsung says the additional letters and numbers denote carrier-specific models; in that table, U means a US carrier unified build.

That is why “I have a Galaxy S20 Ultra” is not always enough information for a case, screen protector, firmware package or replacement component. The complete model code, sales region and carrier can affect compatibility.

How to read a code such as SM-G988B
SM- is the documented prefix
SM- is the Samsung model-code prefix shown in the official examples. Treat it as part of the identifier rather than a separate product feature.
The family or platform letter and digits identify the base line
The characters after the prefix identify a device line and base variant. Samsung’s official tables provide these examples:

These examples show how Samsung’s platform letters and digits group products, but they do not create a universal decoder for every generation. A letter can be used differently across product families and release years. Do not infer a phone’s complete specifications from one character alone.
The trailing letter or group can identify a market or carrier build
In SM-G988B, the final B is part of the variant code. The same base phone can have other endings, such as N, U or W. Samsung’s Knox table specifically describes these extra letters and numbers as carrier-specific model designations and identifies U as a US carrier unified build.
The exact meaning of a suffix is not guaranteed to remain constant across every Galaxy generation. Samsung consumer support says model numbers can vary with release year, colour, carrier and other factors. Always verify the complete code for the exact device instead of applying a rule learned from a different Galaxy model.
What SM-S, SM-A, SM-G and SM-F do—and do not—tell you
Readers often want a one-line translation such as “S means flagship” or “F means foldable.” Samsung’s cited documentation supports a safer conclusion: the letters and digits form a platform and product code, while the full suffix distinguishes variants. The official examples establish SM-A515 for Galaxy A51, SM-F907 for Galaxy Fold 5G and several SM-G codes for Galaxy S phones. They do not publish one current, character-by-character decoder covering every Galaxy generation.

For an SM-S code—or any code not covered by Samsung’s table—use the full identifier shown on your phone and match it with Samsung’s support or regional product information. The complete code is more reliable than a presumed meaning for its first letter.
Model number, serial number and IMEI: the difference
These identifiers answer different questions. Confusing them can lead to the wrong accessory, an incorrect support request or a failed device check.

A model number can be shared by many phones. A serial number is assigned to one device. An IMEI is also device-specific, and a dual-SIM phone may display more than one IMEI. Because these identifiers are sensitive, avoid posting a full serial number or IMEI publicly.
How to find the exact Galaxy model number
Use Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone. Some older models label this screen About device.
- Read the entry labeled Model number and record every character, including
SM-and the final suffix.
This is the preferred method when the phone starts normally because it shows the identifier stored for that device. Do not copy only the family name or the first four digits.
Check Samsung Members
- Open Samsung Members.
- Choose Get help.
- If the phone is registered, tap the phone’s model number in the device details.
The model shown there can help when you are preparing a support request, but compare it with the number in Settings if the two displays do not agree.
Read the original box or label
The retail box normally carries the model code on its label. Older devices may print the model on the back or beneath a removable battery. Samsung warns not to open a sealed device simply to reach a label. If the phone is sealed, use Settings, Samsung Members or the box instead.

Dial the identifier code
- Open the Phone app.
- Dial

Samsung documents this method for displaying the IMEI and related device details. Use Settings or the box when you specifically need the model number, and use the dialer screen to confirm network identifiers such as the IMEI.
Why the complete suffix matters for accessories and parts
Before ordering a case, screen protector, battery, display, charging assembly or other part, write down the exact model code. A listing that says only “Galaxy S20” may cover several physical variants, while a listing that names the full code gives you a much stronger compatibility check.
A reliable compatibility check
- Open Settings > About phone and copy the complete model number.
- Compare that code with the accessory or replacement-part listing. Match the letters and numbers, not just the Galaxy marketing name.
- Check the sales region and carrier associated with the listing. Samsung documents regional and carrier variants within the same base model family.
- Confirm physical dimensions, camera cut-outs, button placement and connector layout in the product’s regional specification information when available.
- For network-dependent equipment, confirm supported network bands and SIM configuration on the regional specification page before purchasing. The model-code examples establish that variants exist; they do not by themselves provide a band or feature list.
For instance, the four documented Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G codes—SM-G988B, SM-G988N, SM-G988U and SM-G988W—share the SM-G988 base but represent different carrier or regional builds. Treating them as interchangeable without checking the listing can produce a poor fit or missing network features.

When two phones have the same advertised name, compare them in this order:

If a seller provides only “Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G” and omits the model code, ask for a photograph of the box label or the phone’s About phone screen before buying. If the seller cannot provide it, compatibility remains unconfirmed.

Reading the model number as a serial number
A model number can appear on thousands of units. It does not prove that the phone in your hand is the original unit or identify its owner. Use the 11-character serial number for a device-specific service record and the 15-digit IMEI for network identification.

Dropping the suffix
Writing down only SM-G988 loses the regional or carrier distinction shown by endings such as B, N, U and W. Preserve the entire code exactly as displayed.

Samsung does not provide one universal decoder for all Galaxy generations in the cited support material. Release year, colour, carrier and other factors can change the model number. A rule that appears correct for one generation may misidentify another.
Using the marketing name alone
Names such as “Galaxy S20” or “Galaxy Fold” describe a product family. They do not necessarily distinguish 4G and 5G editions, storage or market variants, or carrier builds. Use the exact code for purchasing and support.
Opening a sealed phone to find a label
Samsung’s guidance is to use the software screen, Samsung Members, the original box or the dialer method instead of opening a sealed device. Opening a sealed phone can damage it and is unnecessary for identifying the model.
Troubleshooting when the code is missing or unclear
The phone will not boot
Start with the original box or purchase documentation. If the device has a removable battery, check the label beneath it. Do not open a sealed model. A carrier or Samsung service center may also be able to identify the device from its IMEI, but keep in mind that the IMEI is not the model number.
The label is damaged
Try Settings > About phone or Samsung Members > Get help. If the display is unreadable, photograph the box label and enlarge the image rather than guessing characters such as B, 8, N or W.
The seller’s code does not match your phone
Stop before installing firmware or ordering a part. Recheck the code in Settings, including the suffix, and ask the seller to confirm the region and carrier. A mismatch can indicate a different edition, a listing error or an imported device.
You have only an IMEI
The IMEI is a 15-digit device identifier, not a substitute for the model code. Use it with a carrier or Samsung support channel that can map the device, and do not publish it in a forum or marketplace listing.

Keep the record separate from public photographs. A box photo can reveal both the model code and sensitive identifiers, so crop or obscure the serial number and IMEI before posting it online.
The safest rule for any Galaxy model number
Use the full code as a single identifier. The prefix and base characters place the phone in a Samsung product line; the trailing characters can distinguish a regional or carrier build. Samsung’s official examples—SM-G988, SM-G973, SM-G981, SM-N976, SM-F907 and SM-A515—show how those codes group products, while the S20 Ultra variants demonstrate why the suffix matters.
For the most dependable answer, read Settings > About phone, copy every character, and verify that exact code against the accessory, part or network information you intend to use. If a source does not document the meaning of a particular character for your generation, treat that meaning as unconfirmed rather than guessing.
