Short answer: Ink yield is the number of pages a particular cartridge, bottle or other ink supply is rated to print under a specified test method. Cost per page is usually the supply’s price divided by that rated yield. Both are comparison tools—not promises of the exact pages or spending you will see at home.
What “ink yield” means
Ink yield is a test-based page count for one specific ink supply used with a defined printer configuration. A rating such as “300 pages” means the supply produced that many pages in the applicable test; it does not mean every household will get exactly 300 usable pages.

For qualifying color inkjet printers and multifunction devices, the principal international method is ISO/IEC 24711:2021. The standard’s test suite is defined in ISO/IEC 24712. ISO’s listing says the 2021 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2026 and remains current.

- Measure cartridge yield in a repeatable way so supplies can be compared on a common basis.
- Use plain paper as the intended medium.
- Apply to qualifying color inkjet printers and multifunction devices rather than every possible ink system.
The standard is a measurement method, not a promise about print quality, reliability or your printer’s service life. Its scope also excludes some configurations, including certain large-format and photo-only systems. The IEC standards listing provides the corresponding scope summary.

Why a page count is not universal
A “page” in a yield rating is produced under the standard’s test conditions. Your pages may contain more or less text, color or solid coverage than the test pages. A document with heavy graphics can therefore use ink faster than a lightly printed page, while sparse pages can use less. Treat the rating as a baseline for comparing like-for-like supplies, not as a household quota.
What cost per page means
Cost per page (CPP) is normally an ink-only estimate. The calculation is:
Cost per page = price of the relevant ink supply ÷ its rated page yield

The result covers only the ink supply unless you deliberately add other expenses. It does not automatically include paper, the printer’s purchase price, maintenance or other operating costs. A listing that calls itself “cost per page” can therefore be narrower than a calculation intended to represent total printing cost; check what the figure includes.
Calculating a multipack or set
Use the price and yield that belong to the same purchase. If a set has a combined price and a published combined yield, divide those two figures. If each color has its own price and yield, calculate each color separately and make clear whether you are reporting one color’s CPP or a combined ink estimate. Do not divide a black-cartridge price by a color rating, or mix a standard-capacity price with a high-capacity yield.
Why your actual yield and CPP can differ
Manufacturers caution that ISO figures are a comparison starting point rather than a prediction for every user. HP’s explanation of yield testing identifies three direct influences on actual results: print content, printing frequency and ink used during setup. Its guidance is available at Measuring Inkjet Printer Page Yields.

Print content
The test pages have defined content. Your documents may use a different proportion of black, cyan, magenta and yellow, or may cover more of the sheet with graphics. Because the supply is consumed according to what is printed, a rating based on one content pattern cannot predict every document mix.

Printing frequency
How often you print affects how closely your use resembles the test sequence. Occasional printing and bursts of heavy printing can produce results that differ from a continuous standardized run. The yield number itself does not adjust to your monthly schedule.
Setup ink
Some ink is used while the printer is being installed and prepared. That setup consumption is one reason the first supplies in a new printer may not deliver the same pages as later replacements. When estimating a running CPP, state whether you are evaluating a replacement supply or including initial setup use.
Test medium and purpose
ISO/IEC 24711 is intended for plain paper and does not establish print quality or reliability. A yield rating should not be treated as a photo-printing promise, a guarantee of sharpness or a forecast of maintenance needs. If your main work is photos or another excluded configuration, verify that the published figure applies to that printer and supply before using it for a cost comparison.

- Identify the exact printer. Record the complete model name and, where relevant, the regional version. Supply families can differ even when printers look similar.
- Identify the exact supply. Note the cartridge number or bottle family and whether it is a standard- or high-capacity version. A replacement cartridge is a direct fit only when its listed compatibility matches your printer.
- Record the price and date. Use the price for the same supply you are evaluating. Prices change, so keep the currency, seller and date with the calculation if you will compare it later.
- Record the rated yield. Capture the page count and any stated test method or conditions. Prefer a yield measured on a comparable basis, such as the ISO method where it applies.
- Divide price by yield. Keep additional decimals during the calculation, then round the displayed result consistently (for example, to the nearest cent).
- Label the scope. Call the result “ink-only estimated cost per page” unless paper, printer, maintenance and other costs are also included.
- Check whether the comparison is fair. Compare supplies with the same kind of capacity, test basis and intended use. Explain any difference in printer configuration or paper type before drawing a conclusion.
Worked example
Suppose Supply A costs $30 and has a 300-page rating. The estimate is $30 ÷ 300 = $0.10 per page. If another supply costs $40 and is rated for 500 pages, its estimate is $0.08 per page. Those figures are comparable only if both prices refer to the correct compatible supplies and the yields were measured on a comparable basis. Neither figure predicts the exact amount a particular household will spend.

How to compare printers or supplies without being misled
| Comparison question | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What is the price? | Price of the exact compatible cartridge, bottle or supply set, in the same currency and at a stated date. | A low price for a different capacity or an incompatible supply produces a meaningless CPP. |
| What is the rated yield? | Page count for that same supply, plus the test method and conditions. | A page count alone can hide different test bases or printer configurations. |
| Does your print mix resemble the test? | Consider whether you mostly print light text, dense graphics, color documents, plain paper or another medium. | Different content and media can change how quickly ink is consumed. |
| What costs are included? | Confirm whether the figure is ink-only or also includes paper, printer cost, maintenance and other expenses. | Two numbers with different cost scopes are not direct alternatives. |
Compare like with like
Start with the same printer class and the same kind of supply. Then verify that both yields use a comparable method. A larger page count is not automatically better if it belongs to a different test, a different capacity or a different configuration. Keep the arithmetic visible so another reader can reproduce it.
Check compatibility before looking at the price
Replacement cartridges are designed for specified printer models and supply families. Refill bottles fit only printers designed to accept them; a bottle is not a universal substitute for a cartridge. Check the printer model and the supply family in the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying. No particular model, current price or bottle capacity is established here, so those details must be verified for the printer you own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the rating does—and does not—tell you
It helps with relative comparisons
When two supplies are tested on a comparable basis, yield and CPP help you estimate which one uses less ink money for a similar amount of printing. This is especially useful when a higher-priced supply has a proportionally higher rated yield.
It does not guarantee an individual page count
The rated number comes from a controlled method. It does not promise that your first cartridge, your next cartridge or every color will reach exactly that number. Print content, printing frequency and setup use can move your result away from the rating.

It does not rate print quality or reliability
A high yield does not mean the pages will look better, and a low CPP does not establish that a printer will be more reliable. ISO/IEC 24711 is about measuring yield within its stated scope; quality and reliability are separate questions.
It may not apply to every printer type
Certain large-format and photo-only configurations are outside the standard’s scope. If a product uses an unusual ink system or is designed primarily for photos, look for a yield figure that explicitly applies to that configuration rather than importing a rating from a different class of device.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using page count without its test basis: Find out how the yield was measured before comparing it with another number.
- Mixing supplies: Use the price and yield for the same cartridge, bottle or set. Do not combine a single-color price with a multi-color yield.
- Calling an ink-only estimate a total printing cost: State clearly whether paper, printer purchase and maintenance are excluded.
- Treating the rating as a promise: Present it as a standardized comparison point and account for content, frequency and setup use.
- Buying by capacity alone: Confirm the printer model and supply family first; a refill bottle is suitable only for a compatible tank design.
- Comparing different printer configurations: Make sure the yield applies to the relevant device, especially when a printer is large-format or photo-focused.
- Overstating a hypothetical example: Keep illustrative prices labeled as examples, not as market averages or consumer statistics.
A practical way to use CPP in a buying decision
For occasional text printing
Use the exact replacement supply price and yield to establish an ink-only baseline. Because your documents may be lighter than the standardized pages, treat the result as a comparison rather than a promise. Compatibility and availability matter as much as the arithmetic.

For regular color documents
Compare the complete color supply set on the same yield basis. Check whether the published rating matches the printer configuration and whether your pages contain substantially more color coverage than the test pages.
For a tank printer using bottles
Apply the same price-divided-by-yield calculation only when the bottle is designed for that printer and a rated yield is provided for the relevant system. Do not assume a cartridge rating transfers to a bottle system, or that a bottle fits a cartridge printer.
For photos or excluded formats
Do not use an ISO/IEC 24711 plain-paper rating as a photo-cost guarantee. Confirm that the manufacturer’s figure covers the intended configuration and medium, then state the different conditions alongside any CPP estimate.
The bottom line on yield and cost per page
Ink yield is a standardized, test-based page count for a particular supply and printer setup. Cost per page is the supply price divided by that rated yield, usually describing ink only. Use the two figures together, verify the exact supply fit, match the test basis and cost scope, and treat the result as a disciplined comparison—not a guarantee of what every home or office will print.
