On Summoner’s Rift, the standard five-player setup assigns players to top, jungle, mid, bot, and support. A position usually means where a player is assigned on the map; a role can mean that position or the champion’s broader job for the team. Each position has common responsibilities, but champion picks, team plans, and lane assignments can change how those responsibilities play out.

What the five positions do

Riot’s beginner guide presents these five positions as the recommended Summoner’s Rift team framework. The descriptions below explain their usual map assignments and strategic contributions—not rules that every draft must follow.

Position Usual assignment Typical contribution
Top Solo lane in the upper part of the map. Manages a largely independent lane matchup, contests lane advantage, and later contributes according to the champion’s kit. Riot describes top champions broadly as tough solo fighters; not every top pick has the same job in a team fight.
Jungle Moves between lanes and clears neutral camps rather than occupying one lane throughout the early game. Chooses when to clear, help a lane, or contest neutral objectives. Pathing and ganks respond to the champion and match state; there is no single route that fits every game. Baron Nashor and Drakes are important monsters whose rewards can benefit the team.
Mid Solo lane through the center of the map. Often brings burst damage and can contribute independently or alongside teammates. Its central location makes roaming to either side of the map a common option, though lane state, vision, champion, and timing determine whether a roam makes sense.
Bot Shares the lower lane with support. Often follows a damage-carry pattern: the player uses gold and experience to become a major source of damage. Riot’s beginner guide describes bot champions as vulnerable early and powerful after gaining resources. Bot does not always mean a marksman; Riot’s Patch 26.16 commentary discusses mage picks in bot lane in professional and regular play.
Support Usually shares bot lane with the carry. Enables teammates through protection, setup, and vision-oriented play. The position is a team contribution role, not simply a second carry with less gold. Supports may also roam to help elsewhere when the match makes it worthwhile.

How positions differ in the early game

Solo-lane experience and matchup pressure

Top and mid usually begin as solo lanes, so their players contend directly with an opposing laner for lane control and resources. Their map locations create different opportunities: top is more isolated, while mid is centrally placed. Riot’s 2024 Patch 14.1 notes described mid as requiring some roaming to support junglers or side lanes; that is historical design commentary, not a guarantee that every mid laner should leave lane at a particular time.

Jungle camps and map pressure

The jungler’s early pattern revolves around neutral camps and decisions about where to apply pressure. A gank can help a lane, while movement toward a major monster can set up an objective contest. Those choices depend on the state of lanes and objectives rather than a fixed route.

Shared bot-lane resources

Bot and support share a lane, but their resource patterns and jobs are not identical. Bot commonly receives the gold and experience needed to scale into a major damage threat; support contributes utility and team assistance rather than relying on the same carry pattern. Champions and coordinated plans can vary from this familiar setup.

How the positions work together

A team’s positions connect lane matchups with the wider map. A jungler may help a lane or contest a monster; a mid laner may move toward a side lane; and a support may leave bot to assist elsewhere. These actions can create advantages, but they also involve trade-offs: leaving a lane affects the resources and pressure there, and moving without suitable timing or vision can be risky.

When assessing a position, consider five things together: its map assignment, early access to gold and experience, lane matchup, contribution to fights and neutral objectives, and ability to move around the map. The champion’s kit and the team’s plan shape the answer more than the position name alone.

Patch 26.1 role quests: position-specific incentives

As of Patch 26.1, Riot assigns a role quest based on the position selected in queues with assigned positions. Top, mid, and bot use lane-phase quests; jungle and support continue to progress through their jungle pet and World Atlas systems, respectively. Riot describes progress for top, mid, and bot through actions including minion kills, takedowns, plates, and turrets, with extra progress for actions in the assigned lane. These are patch-specific mechanics, not permanent definitions of what a position does.

Position Patch 26.1 quest context
Top Assigned-lane activity contributes to the role quest. Completion raises the level cap to 20, adds experience and future experience gain, and grants a Teleport-related benefit.
Jungle Quest progression uses the jungle pet system. Patch 26.1 adjusts Smite, jungle-camp interactions, and quest rewards; completion grants movement speed in the jungle and river, plus gold and experience for large monsters.
Mid Damage to champions uniquely contributes to mid’s quest progress. Rewards include upgraded boots and periodic empowered recalls.
Bot Riot frames bot laners as gold-income carries. The quest provides upfront and continuing gold and moves boots to a role-quest slot, freeing an effective item slot.
Support Quest progress uses World Atlas. Patch 26.1 includes control-ward storage and cost benefits.

For the exact live implementation, consult Riot’s Patch 26.1 Notes. Riot’s 2026 Season One Gameplay Preview explains the intended role-quest and role-agency changes, while the patch notes specify the mechanics that went live.

Why lane assignments and strategies can change

The five-position framework is a standard starting point, not a promise that every professional draft preserves the usual lane matchups. Riot’s 2026 role-quest notes discuss position assignment, lane swaps, and incentives to play the assigned lane. Patch 26.16, published on August 11, 2026, also shows that strategies shift: Riot discussed emerging bot-lane strategies, very early support roaming, and jungle item diversity, and described adjustments to support quest progress and specific champions to preserve meaningful lane participation.

That Patch 26.16 discussion is a dated balance explanation, not a permanent rule about how much supports should roam or which champions belong in a position. Exact rewards and balance can change with later patches. Riot’s Patch 26.16 Notes provide the context for those August 2026 adjustments.
