An IP rating tells you how an enclosure performed against dust or water ingress under specified test conditions. It is not a promise that a phone is waterproof, safe to swim with, or protected at one universal depth. To judge a device, check its full IP code and the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model.
What is an IP rating?
IP stands for Ingress Protection. IEC 60529, titled Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code), sets out the classification system. The current consolidated IEC catalog entry combines the 1989 standard with amendments from 1999 and 2013 and incorporates listed corrigenda through 2019. IEC 60529 catalog entry

The code’s two characteristic digits address different hazards: the first concerns dust and the second concerns water. IEC describes multiple water-protection test levels, ranging from drops to immersion and high-pressure jets. The complete code matters; the final digit alone is not enough to compare devices. What does IP68 mean?
IP68 identifies dust protection with a water-ingress classification for immersion. It does not, by itself, tell you a universal depth or duration. IEC’s water classifications cover different test modes, and manufacturers may specify the conditions used for a particular product. Check the product’s official specifications or manual rather than assuming every IP68 device was tested identically.

For example, a Samsung user guide describes controlled IP68 testing in freshwater at 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. Those are conditions for the product guidance represented by that manual, not a general definition of IP68. The manual’s year is not stated, so consult the current guide for your exact device. Is an IP-rated phone waterproof?
No. “Water-resistant” is the more accurate description: an IP rating records performance under defined tests, not protection in every real-world situation. Apple says supported iPhones were tested under controlled laboratory conditions and carries IP67 or IP68 ratings under IEC 60529. Can you swim or use a phone in other liquids?
Do not infer that an immersion rating makes swimming, bathing, pool use, or seawater exposure safe. Manufacturers’ instructions can rule out uses that a rating might appear to permit. Apple advises avoiding swimming or bathing, pressurized or high-velocity water, sauna or steam-room use, intentional submersion, impacts, and disassembly. Apple Support guidance

Does water resistance wear out?
It can. Apple says resistance may decrease through normal wear. Google says the Pixel 9 family is designed to comply with IP68 when it leaves the factory, but is not waterproof; resistance may diminish or be lost through wear, repair, disassembly, or damage. A device’s original rating should not be treated as proof of its present condition, especially after a drop or repair. Google Pixel 9 safety and regulatory guide
How to compare two devices’ water-resistance claims
- Read the full IP code. Its first digit concerns dust; its second concerns water.
- Find the exact test conditions. Check the manufacturer’s stated depth, duration, liquid, and any other limits for that model.
- Consider the device’s condition. Wear, damage, repair, or disassembly can affect resistance.
- Follow the maker’s use and warranty guidance. A rating does not override warnings about swimming, liquids, or care.
If you expect to be around water, a waterproof phone pouch may add a barrier, but it is not a guarantee. Check the pouch’s own tested depth, duration, compatibility, and care instructions as well as the phone maker’s guidance. Apple Support guidance Google Pixel 9 safety and regulatory guide

What liquid damage means for warranty coverage
Warranty terms depend on the manufacturer, device, and region. Apple’s cited support page says liquid damage is not covered under its warranty, subject to any rights under consumer law. Google’s Pixel 9 guide says liquid damage voids the warranty. Check the applicable warranty and regional support page for your exact device before relying on coverage.
