What Do HDMI 2.1, VRR and ALLM Mean on a TV?

HDMI 2.1 is a specification family for transmitting newer high-resolution and high-refresh-rate signals. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) changes the display timing to match uneven game-frame delivery, helping reduce tearing and judder. ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) lets a console or PC ask the TV to switch automatically to a low-latency picture mode, usually Game Mode.

These labels describe capabilities, not a guarantee that every HDMI socket on a TV supports every HDMI 2.1 feature. The exact TV model, input, source device, signal settings and cable all matter.

HDMI 2.1, VRR and ALLM at a glance

Term What it controls Main benefit What it does not guarantee
HDMI 2.1 The HDMI connection specification and its possible feature set Support for formats such as 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz, plus features including VRR and ALLM That every port on a labeled TV implements every feature
VRR Timing between the game source and the TV More consistent frame presentation when rendering speed changes Zero input lag, perfect motion or elimination of every artifact
ALLM The TV’s picture-mode selection Automatic switching to a low-latency mode when gaming starts That the mode is best for films or other non-gaming viewing

VRR and ALLM solve different problems. VRR deals with when frames are displayed; ALLM deals with which processing mode the TV uses. A compatible source and TV can use both at the same time.

What HDMI 2.1 means

A specification family, not a single feature

HDMI 2.1 is a version of the HDMI specification. The current revision named on the HDMI Licensing Administrator’s official specification page is HDMI 2.1b. Its capability list includes 8K video at 60 Hz, 4K video at 120 Hz and bandwidth capability up to 48 Gbps. The same list includes gaming and audio features such as VRR, ALLM, Quick Frame Transport (QFT), Quick Media Switching (QMS) and enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC).

Those are capabilities available within the specification. A television maker can implement some of them and omit others. One HDMI 2.1-labeled input may support 4K at 120 Hz and VRR while another input on the same set has lower bandwidth or lacks a particular feature. Some models place the full-featured sockets only on selected inputs.

Why the logo is not enough

Product pages and packaging may use “HDMI 2.1” as a broad label. That wording alone does not tell you the maximum resolution, refresh rate, VRR range, ALLM behavior or eARC support of a specific socket. Read the model’s current specification sheet and manual. Look for a port-by-port table, because a statement about the television as a whole may not apply to every input.

The four parts of a real connection

Successful operation depends on a complete signal chain:

  • TV: The panel and its software must implement the feature.
  • Input: The source must be connected to an HDMI port that supports the required mode.
  • Source: A console, PC or other device must output VRR, ALLM or the chosen resolution and refresh rate.
  • Signal path: The cable and any receiver, switch or other device in between must pass the required signal.

If any link lacks support, the TV may fall back to a lower refresh rate, a fixed refresh rate or ordinary picture-mode behavior.

What VRR means on a TV

The frame-timing problem

A game does not always render each frame in the same amount of time. A simple scene may be produced quickly, while a detailed scene, heavy effects or a busy game system can take longer. A fixed-refresh display still expects frames at a regular rhythm.

When the next frame is not ready at the scheduled display time, a system may repeat the current frame or present a partially rendered frame. Repeating can look like judder; showing portions of different frames can produce tearing. HDMI guidance describes VRR as a way to wait for the next frame so presentation better follows the source’s changing render time.

How VRR operates

With VRR active, the source and TV negotiate a variable display timing rather than locking every frame to one unchanging interval. The source delivers a frame when it is ready within the supported operating range, and the TV adjusts its refresh timing accordingly. The result can be smoother motion during uneven gameplay.

VRR is not a frame-rate generator and does not make a slow game engine render faster. It also does not promise zero latency or guarantee that every visible artifact disappears. Its usefulness depends on the source’s frame-rate behavior, the TV’s supported VRR implementation and the signal mode in use.

What must support VRR

Both ends of the connection need VRR support, and the source must be configured to output it. The TV input must accept the relevant signal. If a receiver, switch or capture device sits between the source and TV, it must also pass VRR; otherwise connect the source directly to a compatible TV input while diagnosing the setup.

What ALLM means on a TV

Automatic Game Mode switching

ALLM allows a console, PC or another source to send a signal requesting low-latency operation. When the TV recognizes that request, it can switch automatically to a low-latency picture mode, commonly labeled Game Mode. When the source no longer requests it, the TV can return to the previous picture mode.

The purpose is convenience and consistent response. You do not have to change the TV’s picture preset manually every time you start or stop a game, provided the source and TV both implement ALLM and the feature is enabled where necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off of low-latency mode

Low-latency operation may stop or reduce some picture processing so that the display responds sooner to the incoming signal. That can be desirable for interactive games but not ideal for every type of viewing. Film, television and other content may look different when processing options are bypassed. ALLM automates the switch; it does not judge which picture quality is best for you.

VRR versus ALLM: different jobs, complementary features

Question VRR ALLM
Problem addressed Uneven timing between rendered frames Manual switching between normal and low-latency picture modes
What changes The display’s refresh timing The TV’s processing/picture preset
Typical visible result Less tearing or judder during changing frame rates Automatic entry into a more responsive gaming mode
Who initiates it The source and display coordinate variable timing The source sends a low-latency request
Can they operate together? Yes, when the complete chain supports both Yes, when the complete chain supports both

Turning on ALLM does not turn on VRR, and enabling VRR does not force the TV to use ALLM. Treat them as separate settings that may be available on the same HDMI input.

How to set up VRR and ALLM

1. Confirm support before changing settings

  1. Find the exact TV model number and open its current manual or specification sheet.
  2. Check which HDMI inputs support the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
  3. Look specifically for VRR, ALLM and the source’s output mode. Do not rely only on the phrase “HDMI 2.1.”
  4. Check the console or PC documentation for its VRR and ALLM support and any limits at the selected resolution.

2. Connect the source to the correct input

Use the HDMI socket identified by the TV maker for the required high-refresh or gaming features. If the TV has multiple inputs, record which one you used; moving the cable to another socket can change the available modes.

3. Configure the source

In the console or PC display settings, select the desired resolution and refresh rate, then enable variable-refresh output if the device provides a separate VRR option. If there is an ALLM or automatic low-latency option, enable it as well. Menu names vary by device and software version.

4. Enable the TV’s related options

Open the TV’s external-input, gaming or picture settings. Manufacturers may call VRR “Variable Refresh Rate,” “Adaptive Sync” or a similar name. ALLM may appear as “Auto Low Latency,” “Auto Game Mode” or an HDMI control option. Turn on the relevant setting for the input in use, if the manual requires a manual enable.

5. Verify the actual signal

Use the TV’s information panel or the source’s display diagnostics to confirm the active resolution, refresh rate and VRR status. Start a game with changing scene complexity and watch for the TV to enter its low-latency preset when ALLM is working. A confirmation message is useful evidence; the presence of an HDMI 2.1 label is not.

6. Add intermediate equipment carefully

If you use an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device, verify that it supports the same signal features. For a clean test, connect the source directly to the TV. Reintroduce intermediate equipment only after the direct connection works.

Cable requirements and the 48 Gbps question

HDMI Licensing Administrator says certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cables support up to 48 Gbps and are backward compatible with earlier HDMI devices. Such a cable is a sensible choice for a connection that needs the highest supported bandwidth, including compatible 4K-at-120-Hz or 8K-at-60-Hz modes.

That does not mean every VRR or ALLM problem requires a new cable. Cable needs depend on the resolution, refresh rate, source, TV input and the cable already installed. ALLM is a control signal, and VRR may operate at modes that do not approach the cable’s maximum capacity. Replace or test the cable when the selected high-bandwidth mode is unstable, unavailable or repeatedly drops out, not simply because the television advertises HDMI 2.1.

Troubleshooting common failures

The TV never switches to Game Mode

  • Confirm that the source supports ALLM and that its automatic low-latency setting is enabled.
  • Check the TV’s setting for the specific HDMI input, not only a global picture setting.
  • Move the source to the input listed for ALLM support.
  • Temporarily connect directly to the TV to rule out a receiver, switch or soundbar that does not pass ALLM.
  • If the source is playing video rather than requesting gaming mode, the TV may correctly remain in its previous picture preset.

VRR is missing from the source or TV menu

  • Verify support on both exact models and at the selected resolution and refresh rate.
  • Use the correct HDMI input and a direct connection for testing.
  • Check whether the source requires a separate gaming or variable-refresh option.
  • Reduce the output mode temporarily. If VRR appears at a lower mode, the chosen high-bandwidth combination may exceed the TV, source or signal-path limits.

The picture flickers, tears or drops out

  • Confirm that the active signal is within the TV’s documented VRR range.
  • Test another certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the connection is using a high-bandwidth mode.
  • Remove intermediate equipment and retest directly.
  • Try a lower resolution or refresh rate to identify whether bandwidth, rather than VRR itself, is the limiting factor.

Game Mode looks worse for films or television

This can be normal. ALLM may have caused the TV to suspend processing used by other content. Disable automatic low-latency switching for that source, or select the TV’s normal picture mode after gaming, if your setup does not need automatic switching.

How to decide what matters for your setup

  • For a current-generation console or gaming PC: Prioritize the exact input’s support for your target resolution and refresh rate, then check VRR and ALLM separately.
  • For a film-and-TV-only setup: VRR and ALLM may provide little benefit. HDMI 2.1 features such as eARC can matter for audio, but verify the specific equipment rather than assuming all features are present.
  • For an 8K display: Confirm that the source, TV input and cable can carry the intended 8K-at-60-Hz signal; the HDMI 2.1 specification’s capability does not prove that your particular devices implement it.
  • For an older cable or mixed equipment: Keep the existing cable if the desired signal is stable. Move to a certified Ultra High Speed cable when the required mode needs up to 48 Gbps or the existing connection cannot maintain it.

What to check in a TV specification sheet

Before buying or configuring a TV, look for a port-by-port description that states:

  • Which HDMI inputs support the required resolution and refresh rate.
  • Whether VRR is supported, and for which signal modes.
  • Whether ALLM is supported and whether it is automatic or requires an input setting.
  • Whether eARC is available on a particular input, if audio return is important.
  • Any stated restrictions when multiple features are used together.

If a specification sheet does not state a value, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the broad HDMI 2.1 label fills in the gap. Manufacturer documentation for the exact model and current software is the authoritative check for device support.
