What Do Green Anacondas Eat, and How Do They Hunt Underwater?

Green anacondas (Eunectes murinus) are nonvenomous constrictors that eat vertebrate prey. Young snakes commonly take fish, birds and small mammals; large adults can handle prey ranging from amphibians and reptiles to capybaras, deer, caimans and other large mammals. They usually hunt by ambush: most of the body stays hidden in shallow water while the eyes and nostrils remain above the surface, allowing the snake to watch, breathe, strike, constrict and swallow its meal whole.

What green anacondas eat

Green anacondas are carnivores, and their diet changes as they grow. Body size determines what an individual can overpower and swallow, while the local habitat determines which prey is actually available. The Smithsonian describes the potential menu as broad, and the USGS likewise characterizes it as “extensive and varied.” That means a list of documented prey is more useful than a claim that every anaconda eats the same animals.

Typical prey by life stage

Life stage Commonly reported prey What determines the choice
Juveniles Fish, birds and small mammals Smaller jaws and body mass limit the size of prey they can restrain and swallow.
Adults Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals Greater size permits larger prey, but opportunity and habitat still matter.
Large adults Turtles, capybaras, deer, caimans, peccaries and other large vertebrates These are documented examples of what a sufficiently large snake may take, not a routine meal plan for every individual.

Fish and amphibians can be encountered directly in the water. Birds and mammals may come to the edge to drink, while reptiles and terrestrial mammals can be caught when they pass through flooded vegetation or shallow channels. A capybara, deer or caiman represents a very large meal, so such captures should be understood as opportunistic events by large snakes rather than proof that anacondas regularly target the biggest animal available.

Why the menu is called opportunistic

An anaconda does not need a specialized diet of one fish, one mammal or one type of reptile. It uses a general-purpose constricting body and takes suitable vertebrate prey that comes within range. Water level, seasonal flooding, vegetation and the abundance of nearby animals all change what is practical. A juvenile in a fish-rich pool and a large adult near a mammal trail may be exploiting completely different parts of the available food web.

Can green anacondas hunt underwater?

Yes. They are strongly adapted to aquatic hunting, especially in shallow, slow-moving or seasonally flooded water. The Smithsonian says green anacondas are well adapted to aquatic life, and their hunting posture explains why: the snake can hide its long body below the surface while exposing only the top of its head.

The eyes-and-nostrils advantage

The eyes and nostrils sit on top of the head rather than on the sides. This lets an anaconda monitor the surface and take breaths while the rest of the head and body remain difficult to see. San Diego Zoo describes the snake waiting with its body hidden underwater. To prey approaching a drinking place, the animal may look like little more than a patch of vegetation or a low silhouette at the waterline.

This arrangement does not mean the snake is swimming continuously while searching. It is an energy-saving surveillance system. The anaconda positions itself where prey is likely to pass, keeps movement to a minimum and waits for a close opportunity.

How an underwater ambush unfolds

Green anacondas use a sequence of concealment, surveillance, rapid contact and restraint. Each stage solves a different problem: getting close without being detected, maintaining access to air, stopping a struggling animal and then managing a large meal.

1. Concealing the body

Shallow water, flooded forest and slow channels provide cover for a snake that may be several metres long. Its coloration blends with muddy water, plants and shadows, while submergence hides the body’s outline. The snake can remain nearly motionless instead of spending energy on an extended chase.

2. Watching from the surface

With the eyes and nostrils above water, the anaconda can see approaching prey and breathe without lifting its entire head. It may wait for an animal to swim past or for a terrestrial animal to come to the water to drink. This is why San Diego Zoo calls the strategy a “watch and wait” approach rather than active hunting.

3. Striking and securing the prey

When the target enters range, the snake lunges and grips it with recurved teeth. The teeth hold rather than deliver venom: green anacondas are nonvenomous. The initial jaw hold is important because a fish, bird or mammal can thrash, dive or reach shallow ground immediately after the strike.

4. Coiling and constricting

After the bite, the anaconda throws coils of its muscular body around the prey. USGS describes the sequence as jaw restraint followed by coiling and constriction, which immobilizes and kills the animal. The snake maintains contact and tightens its body as the prey struggles. The available sources do not establish a single underwater constriction-force number, so claims assigning a precise pressure or “tons of force” to the species are not supported here.

5. Taking the meal into or beside the water

The prey is swallowed whole. San Diego Zoo notes that anacondas often take a meal into the water, where buoyancy can help the snake maneuver the food into position. Water therefore serves more than one purpose: it conceals the hunter, supports its body and may make handling a heavy carcass easier.

Animal Diversity Web reports that prey near water may also die from drowning as well as constriction. That is a documented possibility for some captures, not a universal description of every kill. The core method remains a bite-and-hold followed by body coils and constriction.

How they breathe while hunting

Anacondas do not need to expose the whole head to breathe. Their nostrils are placed on the upper surface of the snout, so the snake can keep the openings at the air-water boundary while the body stays submerged. The elevated eyes provide the matching visual advantage. This is the same basic arrangement that makes a floating ambush possible: breathing and surveillance continue while the animal’s profile remains small.

The adaptation is especially useful in still or gently moving water. In fast water, deep open water or an exposed bank, hiding a large body is more difficult. The sources describe the species’ aquatic specialization and preferred ambush settings, but they do not provide a universal depth, maximum submergence time or measured underwater strike speed.

How often do green anacondas eat?

They generally feed infrequently. Snakes have slow metabolisms, and the Smithsonian says that, except for breeding females, green anacondas usually need food only once every few weeks. A very large meal can cover a much longer interval: the Houston Zoo states that large meals may provide enough nourishment for weeks or months, a pattern also summarized by USGS.

“How long can an anaconda go without eating?” therefore has no single number that applies to every snake. The interval depends on the animal’s size, the size of its last meal, activity, temperature, reproductive state and the availability of prey. Weeks or months after a substantial meal is consistent with the cited profiles; it should not be turned into a guaranteed fasting limit.

Do anacondas choose particular hunting hotspots?

Most descriptions emphasize waiting where prey naturally comes within range, but a 2024 short communication in Food Webs provides suggestive field evidence that location choice may be more active than simple random waiting. Researchers documented six livestock-depredation events in southeastern Peru. Three radio-tagged snakes were associated with known mineral licks, and one individual was associated with a game trail. Because mineral licks and trails can concentrate animals, the observations are consistent with anacondas seeking places where prey density is higher.

The result is preliminary rather than a universal rule. It is a small observational dataset, not a population-wide test of habitat selection, and it does not show that every green anaconda routinely patrols mineral licks or game trails. It does show why “ambush predator” should not be read as “never chooses where to wait.” A snake can conserve energy once positioned while still selecting a productive place to position itself.

What happens after the kill?

Green anacondas swallow prey whole instead of tearing it into pieces. Their flexible jaws and expandable body allow a large meal to pass even when the prey appears wider than the snake’s head. In water, buoyancy may help support and orient the carcass while the snake begins swallowing. The sources describe this handling advantage but do not establish a fixed swallowing time or a universal rule that every meal is consumed fully submerged.

After feeding, digestion and a slow metabolism reduce the need for immediate hunting. This explains why anaconda sightings can involve long periods of apparent inactivity: a snake may be conserving energy after a single substantial meal rather than searching continuously for the next one.

Green anaconda hunting, in practical terms

  • Ambush, not pursuit: the snake usually waits for prey to swim past or approach water instead of conducting a prolonged chase.
  • Surface surveillance: eyes and nostrils on top of the head permit sight and breathing while most of the body remains concealed.
  • Jaw hold first: recurved teeth secure the prey; the species is nonvenomous.
  • Constricting restraint: muscular coils immobilize and kill the animal.
  • Whole-prey feeding: the meal is swallowed intact, often in or near water.
  • Flexible diet: prey ranges from fish and birds to large mammals, depending on body size and opportunity.
  • Long intervals between meals: a large meal can support weeks or months without another feeding.

What is not established about the underwater hunt

Authoritative profiles explain the behavior and anatomy but do not publish a single reliable strike-speed figure, hunting-success percentage or measured underwater constriction-force value for green anacondas. Those numbers should not be presented as settled species facts. Likewise, an extreme prey story should not be treated as routine behavior without evidence that it represents normal feeding rather than an unusual event.

The well-supported picture is more useful than a dramatic number: green anacondas are adaptable aquatic ambush predators. They hide in suitable water, keep their sensory openings at the surface, seize vertebrate prey with their jaws, use body coils to constrict it and swallow the meal whole. Their broad diet and long post-meal intervals are the direct consequences of that strategy.
