What Do Ethernet Cable Categories and Ratings Mean? A Practical Guide to Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6A and More

Ethernet cable categories are performance classifications for twisted-pair network cabling. The category tells you the cable’s tested transmission-frequency capability; it is not a guaranteed internet speed. A complete working link also depends on connectors, patch cords, termination quality, Ethernet hardware, the application and the cable length.

Other jacket markings describe different properties. CMP and CMR identify fire-installation classifications, UTP and FTP identify shielding, and AWG, pair count and temperature markings describe physical construction. Choose a cable by matching all of those details to the route and equipment—not by buying the largest Cat number you can find.

What “Cat” means on an Ethernet cable

“Cat” is short for category. It is a transmission-performance designation applied to balanced twisted-pair cabling and patch cords. A higher category generally has a higher tested frequency rating and tighter electrical-performance requirements, but the number alone does not promise a particular data rate, internet plan speed or maximum distance.

For example, a Cat 6 cable is tested to a higher frequency than Cat 5e. That can make it suitable for applications with more demanding signal requirements, provided the connectors, terminations, equipment and installation are also compatible. Replacing one section of a link with a higher-category cable does not automatically upgrade the entire link.

The figures below come from Anatel’s 2023 technical requirements (Ato nº 384), a Brazilian regulatory document that references TIA and IEC material. They are category frequency ratings, measured in megahertz (MHz), not network speeds measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps).

Category frequency ratings

Category Frequency rating What the number represents
Cat 3 16 MHz Tested transmission-frequency range for the category
Cat 5e 100 MHz Tested transmission-frequency range for the category
Cat 6 250 MHz Tested transmission-frequency range for the category
Cat 6A 500 MHz Tested transmission-frequency range for the category
Cat 7 600 MHz Tested transmission-frequency range for the category
Cat 7A 1,000 MHz Tested transmission-frequency range for the category
Cat 8 2,000 MHz Tested transmission-frequency range for the category

Do not read the table as a speed chart. An Ethernet application negotiates a link using the weakest relevant component and the conditions of the installation. The available official material does not establish one universal speed-and-distance matrix for every category, so attaching a fixed data rate and reach to each row would be misleading.

Why frequency is not the same as network speed

MHz describes how high a frequency range the cable is designed and tested to carry. Mbps and Gbps describe how much digital data an Ethernet system transfers. They are related through the signaling used by a particular Ethernet standard, but they are not interchangeable units.

A link can fail to deliver the capability you expected even when the jacket shows a high category. Common limiting factors include:

  • A lower-category connector, patch cord or keystone in the same channel.
  • Poor termination, excessive untwist at the connector or damaged conductors.
  • Network equipment that supports a lower Ethernet mode.
  • A link length, bend, temperature or electromagnetic environment outside the installation design.
  • Mixed components whose performance has not been verified as a complete channel.

Consequently, buying Cat 8 for a home internet connection does not by itself make the service faster. The router, switch, network adapter, service plan and installed channel still determine the usable result.

How to read the markings printed on the jacket

Cable jackets often carry several abbreviations. Each answers a different question, and none should be treated as a substitute for the others.

Cat or category marking

The Cat marking identifies the transmission category. Regulatory patch-cord requirements also call for identification such as the manufacturer or brand, conductor gauge, traceability information and flame-performance information where applicable. Look for a repeated, legible marking along the sheath rather than relying on a box label that could have been separated from the cable.

CMP and CMR fire classifications

Fire and installation ratings are separate from transmission category. The International Code Council (ICC) describes:

  • CMP: plenum-rated cable intended for use in air-handling spaces where the applicable code permits or requires that classification.
  • CMR: riser-rated cable intended for vertical runs between floors where that classification is permitted.

The correct choice depends on the route and the building rules in your jurisdiction. A CMP cable is not “faster” than a CMR cable, and a high Cat number does not make an otherwise unsuitable jacket legal for a particular pathway. Check the applicable electrical, building and fire codes or ask the installer responsible for the site.

UTP and FTP shielding

UTP means unshielded twisted pair. FTP means foil-shielded twisted pair in the ICC terminology. Shielding can help control interference in an electrically noisy installation, but it does not automatically increase the cable’s category or speed.

Shielded construction also has installation implications. The plugs, jacks and patch panels must be compatible with the cable design, and the shielding system must be installed as intended. Substituting an incompatible connector can defeat the purpose of the shield or create a termination problem.

AWG, pair count and temperature

AWG identifies conductor size: a lower AWG number generally indicates a thicker conductor. The jacket may also state the number of twisted pairs and a temperature rating. These details affect mechanical handling, power delivery, bend radius, bundle behavior and whether the cable suits the route.

Do not assume every cable within one category has identical construction. Two Cat 6 products can use different conductor gauges, jacket materials, shielding arrangements and temperature ratings. Read the actual marking and the manufacturer’s installation data for the product you are buying.

Performance and safety verification marks

ICC’s guide distinguishes performance verification from safety verification. A printed category is a claim about the cable’s classification; it is not proof that an installed link was terminated correctly and tested successfully. In a new installation, records from a qualified tester or certifier provide stronger evidence than the category text alone.

Category is only one part of an Ethernet link

Think of a network channel as a chain. The cable in the wall, the patch cords at each end, the connectors, the termination workmanship and the active equipment all contribute to the result. The channel is only as strong as its weakest relevant part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connectors and patch cords

A permanently installed horizontal cable and a flexible patch cord may have different construction requirements. Use connectors and patch hardware rated for the cable category and conductor type. A mismatch can increase insertion loss, crosstalk or mechanical failure risk even if the main cable has a high Cat marking.

Termination quality

Twisted pairs must remain arranged correctly and untwisted only as much as the termination instructions allow. Excessive untwist, split pairs, loose contacts, sharp kinks or crushing under staples can degrade performance. If a link negotiates at an unexpectedly low rate or drops intermittently, inspect terminations before replacing every cable.

Equipment and application

Switches, routers, adapters and other Ethernet devices advertise the modes they support. A cable cannot make a port operate at a mode that the hardware does not implement. Application requirements also differ: a short connection between a computer and a switch has different constraints from a long, bundled run in a commercial pathway.

Length and route

Length, bends, proximity to electrical equipment and the way cables are bundled all affect the installed channel. The sources used for this guide do not provide a complete current table pairing every category with every Ethernet speed and reach. Use the application’s applicable IEEE, TIA or ISO/IEC design guidance rather than inferring reach from the MHz number.

Power over Ethernet changes the thermal question

Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends electrical power over balanced twisted-pair cabling while data is carried on the same link. When many powered cables are bundled, their temperature can rise. Cable construction, ambient temperature, bundle size, installation method and the power delivered all influence that rise.

ISO/IEC TS 29125:2017 provides supplementary guidance for remote power over balanced cabling, including installation scenarios and temperature-rise considerations. Its scope states: “This document does not include requirements from national or local safety standards and regulations.” That means the technical guidance does not replace local electrical and fire requirements.

Do not claim that a category alone guarantees a particular PoE capacity. For a PoE installation, check the switch or injector instructions, the cable’s conductor and temperature ratings, bundle conditions and the rules that apply where the cable will be installed. The older IEC 61156-5:2009 edition is marked withdrawn in the IEC catalogue; a newer 2020 edition is identified there, so use the current applicable standard rather than relying on an obsolete edition.

Which Ethernet cable should you buy?

For a straightforward consumer connection between a router, switch, computer, console or access point, a properly made Cat 6 patch cable is a practical search term. It offers a current, broadly useful category without implying that the cable alone upgrades your internet service.

Choose by the physical job

  1. Identify the devices. Confirm the ports and Ethernet modes supported by both endpoints.
  2. Measure the route. Include the path around furniture, through conduit or along a wall, and leave enough slack for safe termination without tight bends.
  3. Decide whether it is a patch cord or permanent cable. Flexible patch cable is intended for equipment connections; in-wall work may require a cable and hardware approved for that installation method.
  4. Check the pathway rating. Select CMP, CMR or another permitted flame classification according to the route and local code, not according to the Cat number.
  5. Check construction. Review UTP or FTP, AWG, pair count and temperature marking. For a noisy industrial route or a PoE bundle, these details may matter as much as category.
  6. Verify compatibility. Make sure plugs, jacks, patch panels and termination tools match the cable’s conductor and shielding design.
  7. Test when the installation matters. For critical or newly installed links, use an appropriate cable tester or certification process and keep the result with the installation records.

When a higher category may be justified

A higher category can be sensible when the equipment and planned application require it, when you are installing new cable that will remain in place for years, or when the route has a design requirement for higher-frequency performance. It is not automatically sensible when the only goal is faster consumer internet, because the service and active network hardware may remain the limiting factors.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“The biggest Cat number is always best.”

Correct the assumption by checking the application, connectors, route, fire classification, shielding and cost. A cable that does not fit the pathway or connector system is a poor choice regardless of its printed category.

“More MHz means more Mbps.”

MHz is a frequency rating. Determine the Ethernet mode supported by the complete channel and its equipment instead of converting the number directly into a speed promise.

“Shielded cable is automatically faster.”

Shielding and category are independent properties. Use shielding when the installation’s interference and grounding design call for it, and use compatible shielded hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A category marking proves the installed link passed.”

The marking identifies the cable. It does not verify field termination, pair mapping or channel performance. Test the completed link when reliability or compliance requires documented results.

“Any jacket rating works anywhere.”

CMP and CMR address different installation environments. Confirm the route and local code before pulling cable through ceilings, risers or other building spaces.

Bottom line for home and small-office buyers

Read an Ethernet jacket as a set of specifications, not a single speed label. Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6A and higher categories describe tested frequency capability; CMP or CMR describes fire installation classification; UTP or FTP describes shielding; AWG, pair count and temperature describe construction. For an ordinary equipment connection, choose a correctly constructed Cat 6 patch cable of the required length, then make sure the rest of the channel and the network hardware support the result you need.
