Hold a tropical fish or a Bucket of Tropical Fish to draw nearby axolotls toward you, then use one bucket on each of two adult axolotls to start breeding. This attraction is not permanent taming: Minecraft’s documented mechanics do not give axolotls the conventional tame or ownership state used by pets such as wolves and cats.

You can still keep an axolotl safely by picking it up with a water bucket, carrying it as a Bucket of Axolotl, and releasing it into a prepared water habitat. The guide below explains the food, breeding process, “taming” limitation, transport method, spawn location, edition differences, growth time, blue-variant odds, and combat behavior.

What axolotls eat in Minecraft
The supported food for axolotls is a Bucket of Tropical Fish. Tropical fish must be collected in a bucket; the ordinary loose tropical-fish item is not the documented feeding item for axolotls. Cod and salmon are not supported substitutes for feeding or breeding in the cited mechanics.
Mojang’s official axolotl article describes tropical fish as the mob’s favorite food and specifically says the fish need to be transported in a bucket. Java snapshot documentation likewise describes tropical fish and tropical-fish buckets as items that make axolotls swim toward a player and can be used to mate them.

What you need
- A water bucket to collect fish and to handle axolotls.
- Tropical fish found in water.
- One Bucket of Tropical Fish for each adult axolotl you want to put into breeding mode.
- A safe water area if you plan to keep the animals after moving them.
Does holding fish attract an axolotl?
Yes. Holding tropical fish or a Bucket of Tropical Fish makes nearby axolotls swim toward you. Attraction is temporary: it helps you lead an axolotl to a location, but it does not establish ownership or make the mob permanently follow you.
Can you tame an axolotl?
Not in the conventional Minecraft sense. The documented mechanics cover three related actions:
- Attracting: hold tropical fish or a Bucket of Tropical Fish so axolotls swim toward you.
- Capturing: use a water bucket on an axolotl to turn it into a Bucket of Axolotl.
- Breeding: feed two adults Buckets of Tropical Fish to produce a baby.
None of these actions creates the permanent tame flag or ownership relationship associated with traditionally tamable pets. Players often say they have “tamed” an axolotl when they have lured it home, captured it, or bred it, but that is shorthand rather than a separate axolotl-taming system.
What happens when you stop holding the food?
The attraction effect is not a permanent command. Once you no longer use the food to lead the animal, it follows its normal movement and aquatic behavior. For reliable relocation, capture the axolotl with a water bucket instead of trying to escort it over a long distance.
How to find axolotls
Axolotls spawn in lush cave biomes around underwater clay blocks. If you are searching for wild specimens, inspect the water-filled portions of lush caves and look near clay rather than searching every surface lake or river.
Preparing for the search
- Bring at least one empty water bucket for capturing a specimen.
- Bring additional buckets if you intend to move several axolotls in one trip.
- Locate or prepare a water-filled destination before collecting them, so they are not left exposed on land.
- Carry tropical fish or a Bucket of Tropical Fish if you want to draw an axolotl closer before capture.
How to capture and move an axolotl
A water bucket is the dependable transport method. Aim at the axolotl and use the water bucket on it. The mob is collected as a Bucket of Axolotl, which you can carry in your inventory and place later.

Rank #2
- Find an axolotl in a lush cave’s underwater clay area.
- Select a water bucket.
- Use the bucket on the axolotl rather than attempting to push it across dry terrain.
- Travel to the destination while the axolotl remains stored in the bucket.
- Use the Bucket of Axolotl to release it into a water enclosure or other suitable pool.
Bucket capture also avoids the practical problem of an axolotl wandering away while you travel. Attraction is useful for getting a mob within reach; the bucket is what makes the relocation secure.
How to breed axolotls
Breeding requires two adult axolotls and a Bucket of Tropical Fish for each one. The food item is not merely bait: giving the bucket to an adult puts it into breeding mode.
Breeding procedure
- Collect tropical fish. Find tropical fish in water and use a water bucket to collect them, creating Buckets of Tropical Fish.
- Bring two adults together. Use a Bucket of Tropical Fish as a lure if necessary, or place the axolotls in the same prepared water area.
- Feed the first adult. With a Bucket of Tropical Fish selected, use it on one adult axolotl.
- Feed the second adult. Use another Bucket of Tropical Fish on the other adult.
- Wait for the baby. The adults enter breeding mode and produce a baby axolotl when the conditions are met.
Keep the pair in a contained water space while breeding. The food requirement is specifically a bucket of tropical fish; the cited mechanics do not support using loose tropical fish, cod, or salmon instead.
Breeding cooldown by edition
The Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial accessed in 2026 reports different cooldowns for the two main editions. These are edition-specific figures from that tutorial, not independent measurements in this article.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Edition | Reported adult breeding cooldown | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 5 minutes | Minecraft Wiki tutorial, accessed 2026 |
| Bedrock Edition | 1 minute | Minecraft Wiki tutorial, accessed 2026 |
After a pair breeds, wait for the cooldown associated with your edition before expecting the same adults to breed again. Controls and hand or off-hand behavior while feeding can also differ between Java and Bedrock; use the interaction control shown by your edition and current key or button settings.
Baby axolotl growth and the blue variant
The same Minecraft Wiki tutorial reports that a baby axolotl matures in about 20 minutes. It also states that feeding can make a baby grow sooner, although the cited material does not provide a fixed reduction for each feeding action.
Rank #3
Blue axolotl odds
When two ordinary, non-blue axolotls breed, the tutorial reports a 1-in-1,200 chance that the baby will be blue. That is a probability for each breeding result, not a guarantee after a certain number of attempts. The figure is attributed to the Minecraft Wiki tutorial accessed in 2026.
Because the chance is so small, a blue axolotl should be treated as a rare outcome rather than something a short breeding session is likely to produce. Keep breeding adults in a secure enclosure if you are attempting repeated generations, and allow for the edition-specific cooldown between attempts.
Keeping axolotls alive after moving them
Axolotls are aquatic mobs, although they can exist on land briefly. Mojang’s official article says they need to return to water periodically. Java snapshot documentation states that an axolotl begins taking damage after more than five minutes out of water unless it is raining.
Habitat checklist
- Provide enough water for the axolotl to swim rather than leaving it on a dry floor.
- Enclose the pool so the animal cannot wander away.
- Use walls, glass, fences, or another barrier that keeps the water contained while leaving room for the axolotl.
- Check the enclosure after releasing a Bucket of Axolotl; a bucket does not replace the need for a suitable habitat.
- If an axolotl is temporarily on land, return it to water promptly instead of relying on rain to prevent damage.
For a permanent display or breeding area, a fully enclosed water habitat is safer than trying to manage the mob in an open field.
What axolotls do in combat
Axolotls can attack many aquatic creatures, including drowned. The official article lists exceptions: they do not attack turtles, dolphins, frogs, or other axolotls.
They can therefore act as aquatic combat helpers when you are fighting hostile underwater mobs. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation also describes axolotls’ play-dead behavior. When an axolotl plays dead, it is using its documented defensive behavior rather than entering a tame or owner-controlled state.

Player regeneration interaction
The official article says that when a player kills a creature the axolotl was hostile toward, the player receives Regeneration and loses Mining Fatigue. This benefit is tied to the combat situation; it is not a permanent ability granted by feeding, breeding, or capturing the axolotl.

Using loose tropical fish
Symptom: You have tropical-fish items in your inventory, but the axolotl does not enter breeding mode.
Fix: Collect the fish in buckets first. The supported breeding item is a Bucket of Tropical Fish, and each adult needs one.

Trying cod or salmon
Symptom: You use another common fish and expect the same response.
Fix: Switch to tropical fish in a bucket. The cited mechanics do not identify cod or salmon as axolotl food for attraction or breeding.
Expecting permanent taming
Symptom: The axolotl stops following after you put the food away.
Best Value
Fix: Treat the food as an attraction tool. Capture the axolotl in a water bucket when you need dependable transport; Minecraft does not document a conventional permanent tame state for axolotls.
Leaving one on land
Symptom: An axolotl takes damage after being out of water.
Fix: Move it into a water enclosure. Java snapshot documentation reports damage after more than five minutes out of water unless it is raining, and the official article says axolotls need to return to water periodically.
Breeding again too soon
Symptom: Two adults accept food but do not immediately produce another baby after a previous breeding.
Fix: Wait for the cooldown for your edition: five minutes in Java or one minute in Bedrock, according to the Minecraft Wiki tutorial accessed in 2026.
Java and Bedrock considerations
The clearest documented difference for this task is the breeding cooldown: five minutes in Java and one minute in Bedrock. The cited tutorial also notes Java-specific advice about handling items while feeding, so interaction results can depend on edition and control configuration.
Combat details, regeneration behavior, and other mechanics can change with game updates. If a current patch behaves differently from the figures above, check the notes for your exact Java or Bedrock version before designing a large farm or collection project.
