Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and signal processing to reduce some sounds from outside your headphones. Transparency mode feeds environmental sound into the headphones so you can hear more of what is happening around you without removing them. An adaptive mode can vary the balance between cancellation and outside sound as conditions change.
These are listening features, not identical on every model. Microphone design, software, ear-tip or ear-cup fit, and the available controls determine what you actually hear. Transparency also does not guarantee that every nearby sound will be audible, and ANC or transparency should not be treated as general hearing protection.

What active noise cancellation does
ANC monitors sound around the wearer and produces a counteracting signal through the headphone speakers. The counteracting signal is commonly called anti-noise. When it matches part of an external sound, the result is that some outside noise becomes less noticeable to the listener.

Apple Support describes this process for supported AirPods models using outward-facing microphones to detect external sound. An inward-facing microphone can also detect unwanted sound that remains inside the ear, allowing the headphones to counter that internal noise. That is a manufacturer description for particular products, not a specification that every ANC headphone uses the same microphone arrangement or processing.

What ANC is useful for
- Reducing distractions during travel, work, study, or other situations where a steadier listening environment is useful.
- Making continuous external sound less prominent while music, podcasts, or speech remains the focus.
- Keeping headphones on when you want less outside sound without turning the playback volume up to compensate.
ANC does not create silence. Performance depends on the headphone’s design, the sound itself, and how well the headphones fit. A model may handle a steady background differently from sudden, irregular sounds, and the same model can perform differently when its seal changes.
What transparency mode does
Transparency mode takes the opposite practical approach. Microphones pick up sounds outside the headphones, and the headphone system plays those sounds to you while you continue wearing the headphones. Apple Support summarizes the feature as: “Transparency mode lets outside sound in so you can hear what’s going on around you.”
This can help when you need to hear a nearby person, listen for an announcement, or remain more aware of your surroundings. It is also useful when you want to pause less often during a conversation. The outside sound is being routed through an electronic system, so it may not sound exactly like listening with the headphones removed.

Transparency is not a guarantee
Transparency mode is designed to increase awareness, not to guarantee that every sound will always be heard. The microphones, processing, fit, playback volume, and surrounding conditions all affect the result. Do not rely on transparency alone to detect vehicles, alarms, public-address announcements, or other hazards. If a situation requires dependable awareness, remove the headphones or follow the safety instructions for that environment.

How ANC, transparency, and adaptive modes differ
| Mode | Main purpose | What you experience | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active noise cancellation | Reduce outside noise so listening is less distracted. | Some external sound is countered with anti-noise. | Results depend on product design and fit; it does not remove every sound. |
| Transparency | Hear more of the environment while the headphones stay on. | Environmental sound is captured and allowed through the headphone system. | It does not promise that every sound will be audible or safe to rely on. |
| Adaptive mode | Change the amount of noise control as the environment changes. | A shifting balance between cancellation and ambient sound. | Availability, behavior, and adjustment controls vary by model and software. |
Apple describes Adaptive Audio as combining ANC and transparency, then changing the level of noise control in response to changing surroundings. That description applies to supported products and software; the label “adaptive” is not a universal performance standard across all headphone brands.
Why fit changes the result
Headphones have to couple correctly to your ears for their microphones and speakers to behave as intended. Apple says ANC and transparency work best when supported AirPods Pro models fit well. A loose ear tip, an ear cup that does not seal evenly, glasses that create a gap, or movement during exercise can change the experience.
Signs that fit is affecting ANC
- Low-frequency background sound remains unusually prominent.
- The left and right sides seem to cancel noise differently.
- Noise changes noticeably when you press or reposition an earbud.
- Transparency sounds unbalanced, muffled, or much louder on one side.
Try the manufacturer’s fit test or supplied ear-tip and cushion options if available. Clean the microphones and acoustic openings according to the product instructions, and check that an ear tip or cushion is fully seated. A fit adjustment can matter more than changing modes repeatedly.
Controls you may find on supported headphones
Mode names do not tell you how many adjustments a particular product provides. Some supported models let you customize the amount of amplified transparency, left-right balance, tone, or ambient-noise reduction. Others provide only a simple switch between ANC, transparency, and off.

Ambient-volume or amplification controls
A control for transparency amplification changes how strongly external sound is presented. More amplification is not automatically better: it can make nearby sound more noticeable but may also make the feed less natural or more fatiguing. Adjust it at a comfortable playback level and test it in the environment where you intend to use it.
Balance and tone controls
Balance controls change the relative level sent to each side. Tone controls alter the character of the environmental feed, such as making it brighter or softer. These settings can help compensate for personal preference or an uneven perception between ears, but they cannot correct every hearing or fit issue.
Conversation-focused features
Conversation Boost is an additional feature on supported products. It is not the same thing as ordinary transparency: it is intended to emphasize speech, and its availability and behavior depend on the model. Check the product’s own settings rather than assuming that every transparency mode includes it.

Commuting or flying
ANC may be the most comfortable starting point when the main problem is a steady engine or vehicle background. Keep the volume moderate and remain alert to announcements. If you need to hear staff or boarding information, switch to transparency or remove the headphones rather than assuming the adaptive system will pass every announcement through.

Walking in public
Transparency can make it easier to hear people and general surroundings while listening. It is still not a substitute for visual attention or for removing the headphones when crossing roads, working near machinery, or entering a safety-sensitive area.
Office or home
Choose ANC when conversations and background activity are distracting. Choose transparency when you need to respond to people without repeatedly taking the headphones off. An adaptive mode can be convenient in a setting that shifts between quiet work and conversation, if your model supports it and you are satisfied with how quickly it changes.
Exercise
Movement and sweat can alter an earbud seal, so check fit before judging ANC or transparency. For outdoor exercise, use the mode that leaves you appropriately aware of the environment and follow local safety guidance.

- Confirm support. Check the headphone’s manual or support page for ANC, transparency or ambient sound, and any adaptive feature. Do not assume that an ANC model includes transparency.
- Put the headphones on and establish a fit. Insert the correct ear tips or position the ear cups evenly before comparing modes.
- Open the device controls. Use the headphone’s physical button, touch control, companion app, or the connected phone’s audio controls. The control may be labeled Noise Control, Ambient Sound, Hear-Through, Transparency, or a similar term.
- Select ANC, transparency, adaptive, or off. Listen for a few seconds in the same location so the comparison is meaningful.
- Adjust optional settings. If offered, set transparency amplification, balance, tone, or ambient-noise reduction gradually rather than moving every control at once.
- Recheck after repositioning. A change in seal, glasses, hair, or movement can change the result. If one side sounds different, correct fit and cleanliness before assuming the electronics are faulty.
On Apple products, the exact available choices depend on the AirPods model and software version. Apple’s documentation also identifies Adaptive Audio and additional transparency controls as supported-feature options rather than universal settings.
ANC and hearing protection are different claims
Noise cancellation can make a loud environment feel quieter, but that does not make every ANC headphone a hearing-protection device. Apple documents hearing-protection behavior for particular AirPods Pro models, with attenuation varying according to fit, environmental level, and listening mode. That is model-specific information and should not be generalized to all ANC or transparency headphones.
Use certified hearing protection when the task or workplace requires it. Do not increase playback volume simply because ANC is enabled, and do not assume transparency makes a hazardous environment safe. If you have hearing concerns, persistent ringing, pain, or difficulty understanding speech, seek advice from a qualified hearing professional.

ANC seems weak
- Re-seat the earbuds or ear cups and try another supplied size.
- Check for blocked microphones, vents, or speaker openings.
- Compare the result in the same location with the same playback and mode settings.
- Update the headphone software if the manufacturer provides an update.
- Test whether the problem follows one earbud or one side, which can indicate fit, cleanliness, or hardware trouble.
Transparency sounds artificial or unbalanced
- Lower any transparency amplification setting and compare again.
- Check left-right balance and tone adjustments.
- Inspect the external microphones for dirt or obstruction.
- Verify that the ear tips or cushions are the same type and seated correctly.
The mode keeps changing
An adaptive feature is intended to respond to changing surroundings, so its behavior can differ from a fixed ANC or transparency setting. If you need a consistent result, select a fixed mode when the product allows it. If the available modes or controls do not match the manual, check model compatibility and software version.
Questions to ask before buying
- Does the exact model offer both ANC and transparency, or only ANC?
- Is the ambient mode called transparency, hear-through, or something else?
- Are adaptive controls available on your phone, operating system, and headphone firmware?
- Can you adjust transparency level, balance, or tone?
- Will the supplied ear tips or ear cups fit securely enough to maintain a seal?
- Does the manufacturer make a separate, model-specific hearing-protection claim, or is the product intended only for listening?
There is no universal ANC effectiveness score or transparency-quality rating established by the documentation described here. Claims that one named model blocks more noise or sounds more natural require direct, comparable measurements; feature names alone cannot establish those results.
