What Do 1440p and 60 FPS Mean for Gaming? Resolution, Frame Rate and Monitor Explained

1440p describes the number of pixels in a game image—normally 2560 × 1440 on a 16:9 PC monitor. 60 FPS describes how many frames the game renders each second. They are different measurements: the GPU produces frames (FPS), while the display refreshes its panel (Hz). A “1440p at 60 FPS” target therefore means rendering at 2560 × 1440 and sustaining about 60 frames per second on hardware and settings that can actually deliver it.

What 1440p means

Resolution is the pixel grid used to draw each frame. In standard 16:9 PC gaming, 1440p usually means 2560 pixels wide by 1440 pixels high. It is also called QHD (Quad HD), because it has four times as many pixels as 1280 × 720 HD. The “1440” in the name refers to the vertical pixel count, not a frame-rate value.

The label is not limited to one horizontal width. An ultrawide monitor can have 1440 vertical pixels with a wider horizontal count, such as a 3440 × 1440 mode. Check the monitor’s native resolution and aspect ratio rather than assuming that every 1440p display is 2560 × 1440.

Moving from 1080p (1920 × 1080) to 2560 × 1440 gives the GPU substantially more pixels to render. That can produce a sharper image and more workspace, but it also increases the rendering workload. Whether the difference is worthwhile depends on screen size, viewing distance, game type, eyesight and the performance your computer can sustain.

What 60 FPS means

Frames per second (FPS) is the rate at which the game system completes rendered images. At 60 FPS, the engine is producing approximately 60 frames every second, or one new frame about every 16.7 milliseconds when delivery is even. FPS can rise or fall during play as the scene, effects, resolution and quality settings change.

FPS is not a promise made by the monitor. A game may render at 42 FPS, 60 FPS or 120 FPS on the same display depending on the graphics processor, processor, game engine and selected settings. A monitor advertised as 144 Hz cannot make a demanding game render 144 frames per second by itself.

FPS and Hz are related, but not identical

Hertz (Hz) is the display’s refresh rate: how often the panel can refresh its image. NVIDIA’s Control Panel Help defines refresh rate as the frequency at which the display is retraced and says that most monitors refresh “approximately 60 times per second.” A 60 Hz panel therefore refreshes about 60 times each second; a 144 Hz panel can refresh more often when the source device and connection support that mode.

NVIDIA also notes that “FPS and Hz are often interchanged and misused in the gaming world.” The distinction is easiest to see in a table:

Specification What it measures Controlled by Example
Resolution Pixels in each image Display mode and monitor panel 2560 × 1440
FPS Frames the game renders per second GPU, CPU, game, resolution and settings 60 FPS
Refresh rate Panel updates per second Monitor mode and supported connection 60 Hz or 144 Hz

If a game renders below the monitor’s refresh rate, some refresh cycles have no new completed frame. If it renders above the refresh rate, the display cannot show every generated frame on a conventional fixed-refresh setup. Timing differences can contribute to tearing or uneven motion, which is why frame rate and refresh rate should be considered together.

What a 1440p/60 FPS target actually requires

Reaching the target is a chain of compatible choices:

  1. Game output: select the monitor’s 2560 × 1440 mode (or the display’s native 1440-vertical mode).
  2. Rendering workload: choose quality settings, ray-tracing options and upscaling features that the hardware can handle.
  3. GPU output: the graphics processor must render roughly 60 frames per second in the actual game and scene, not merely in a menu or a short benchmark.
  4. Display mode: the monitor must accept 1440p at the intended refresh rate through the chosen input and cable.
  5. Synchronization: optional variable-refresh-rate (VRR) support can let the panel adjust its refresh to changing frame delivery.

“60 FPS” normally means a target or approximate average, not a guarantee that every frame arrives on time. A game that averages 60 FPS but repeatedly drops into the 40s can feel less consistent than one that stays near 55–60 FPS. Look at frame-time consistency or a built-in performance overlay when diagnosing stutter, rather than relying only on an average number.

Is 1440p at 60 FPS better than 1080p?

1440p can show finer detail than 1080p, especially on a larger monitor or when sitting close to the screen. It also gives the GPU more pixels and can reduce the performance headroom available for effects. A 1080p setup may therefore deliver a higher or steadier frame rate on the same hardware. There is no universal winner: a competitive player may value a higher, steadier frame rate, while a single-player gamer may prefer additional image detail.

Decision factor Questions to ask
Resolution Is the monitor’s native mode 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440 or an ultrawide 1440-vertical format?
Frame-rate target Do you need a stable 60 FPS, or are higher rates important for your games?
Refresh rate Is the panel 60 Hz, or can it refresh faster at the resolution you will use?
GPU and settings Can the graphics processor sustain the target in your specific game, quality preset and effects?
VRR Do the monitor, GPU or console, input and cable support the same variable-refresh mode?

Can your PC run games at 1440p and 60 FPS?

There is no resolution-only answer. Performance varies by game, patch, map, effects, quality preset, background workload and hardware configuration. Use this process to establish your own result:

  1. Confirm the display mode. In the operating system’s display settings, select the monitor’s native 2560 × 1440 mode when available. For an ultrawide, use its specified 1440-vertical native mode.
  2. Set the game resolution. Open the game’s video or graphics menu and choose the same native mode. Avoid treating a lower internal render resolution scaled to a 1440p desktop as identical image quality.
  3. Choose a sensible preset. Start with the game’s recommended or medium/high preset, then adjust the most demanding effects—such as shadows, reflections, volumetric effects and ray tracing—one at a time.
  4. Measure during play. Use the game’s built-in counter or a trusted performance overlay and test a representative demanding section. Record average FPS and notice dips or hitching.
  5. Adjust the target. If performance is below 60, reduce demanding settings or use the game’s supported upscaling option. If it is comfortably above 60 and your display supports a higher refresh rate, you can evaluate a higher frame-rate cap.
  6. Check the link. Verify that the selected refresh rate is enabled in the operating system and that the monitor input and cable support the desired 1440p mode at that rate.

Intel’s Gaming Monitor Buying Guide explains the practical dependency: the benefit of higher frame rates requires a GPU powerful enough to render above 60 FPS at the selected resolution and quality settings. A monitor’s maximum specification alone cannot establish your game’s performance.

Why frame rate may not look smooth even near 60

Frame-time variation

Two systems can report the same average FPS while feeling different. If one delivers frames at regular intervals and the other alternates between long and short delays, the second can look jerky. Monitor the lows and frame-time graph when the problem appears, and lower the setting that causes the spikes.

Frame rate below the refresh rate

On a fixed 60 Hz display, a game running at 45 FPS cannot provide a fresh frame for every refresh. Motion may appear less fluid than a consistent 60 FPS. Capping the frame rate to a level the system can sustain can produce steadier pacing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tearing from unsynchronized timing

Tearing occurs when a display refresh shows portions of more than one frame. It is a timing issue, not a resolution defect. Traditional synchronization methods can trade tearing for additional latency or stutter, depending on implementation and frame rate.

How variable refresh rate helps

Variable refresh rate (VRR) allows a compatible display to alter its refresh timing to follow changing frame delivery. AMD describes FreeSync as using industry standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate; it is intended to synchronize display refresh with frame rate and reduce or eliminate visual artifacts such as tearing and stuttering. Results depend on the display, source device, connection and supported operating range, so compatibility is not automatic.

  • Confirm that both the GPU or console and monitor support the same VRR standard or a compatible mode.
  • Check the monitor’s manual for the input, resolution and refresh-rate range in which VRR operates.
  • Use a cable and port rated for that mode, then enable VRR in the display menu and graphics settings.
  • If the screen flickers or loses signal, test another supported input, cable or refresh mode and consult the monitor’s documented range.

VRR does not create extra GPU performance. It manages timing when FPS changes; it cannot turn a 35-FPS game into a 60-FPS game.

Choosing a 1440p gaming monitor

Read the complete specification rather than the headline resolution:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Native resolution and aspect ratio: verify whether it is 2560 × 1440 or another 1440-vertical format.
  • Refresh rate at native resolution: some displays offer their maximum rate only through a particular input or with a specific setting.
  • Input support: check the exact DisplayPort or HDMI version and the advertised mode for each port.
  • VRR compatibility: identify the supported standard, operating range and whether it works over your chosen input.
  • Ergonomics and panel behavior: consider size, viewing distance, brightness, contrast, response behavior and warranty alongside resolution and Hz.

A 1440p/60 target does not require a 144 Hz monitor, but a higher-refresh panel can provide room for higher FPS later if the GPU and connection can use it. Conversely, buying a high-Hz display does not obligate every game to run at that rate.

Common misunderstandings

  • “1440p means 144 FPS.” The numbers describe unrelated properties: vertical pixels versus frames per second.
  • “60 FPS equals 60 Hz.” They can match numerically, but FPS is produced by the game and Hz is provided by the panel.
  • “A 144 Hz monitor guarantees 144 FPS.” Only the GPU, game and settings determine rendered FPS.
  • “1440p always looks better.” More pixels can improve detail, but viewing conditions, panel quality and stable performance also matter.
  • “VRR fixes every visual problem.” It can improve synchronization within its supported range, but cannot compensate for inadequate performance or incompatible hardware.

Bottom line

Think of 1440p as the image’s pixel count and 60 FPS as the game’s frame-production rate. To make the combination work, set the correct native resolution, test the actual game and settings, confirm that the GPU can sustain the target, and verify that the monitor and connection support the required refresh mode. FPS and Hz then describe two sides of the same display pipeline without becoming interchangeable terms.
