DLSS is not a promise that The Witcher 3 renders every frame at native 1080p or 720p. On Switch 2, it reconstructs the image for those output targets from a dynamically changing internal resolution. Technical-review findings put that internal range at 540p–1080p when docked and 360p–720p in handheld mode.
The result is a substantial visual upgrade over the original Switch release, but the available evidence does not establish a fixed sharpness gain, a particular DLSS version, or a measured rate of artifacts such as ghosting or shimmer.

How DLSS is used in The Witcher 3 on Switch 2
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered uses DLSS on Switch 2. CD PROJEKT RED Senior Publishing Producer Oleg Shatulo confirmed that the studio adapted experience from Cyberpunk 2077, then tuned the implementation for The Witcher 3 rather than copying settings from another game.
At a high level, DLSS is an image-reconstruction system. The game renders the current frame at an internal resolution that can change with workload. DLSS then uses that input, along with information such as previous frames and motion data supplied by the renderer, to produce an image at the display resolution the game is targeting. This lets a demanding scene spend fewer resources on raw pixels while still presenting more output pixels than the internal render alone contains.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction is essential. A 1080p output target means the final signal is 1,920 by 1,080 pixels; it does not mean every frame was calculated natively at 1,920 by 1,080. The same principle applies to the 720p handheld target. When the internal resolution drops, DLSS is reconstructing more of the displayed image from less source detail.
“Our experience with Cyberpunk 2077 definitely gave us a strong foundation for working with DLSS on Nintendo Switch 2. We learned a lot about how to get the most out of the technology on the hardware, and we were able to carry that experience into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered.”
“At the same time, the two games are quite different technically, so it wasn’t simply a matter of taking what we had done for Cyberpunk and applying it directly. The Witcher 3 has its own rendering pipeline, content, and performance characteristics, and we had to tune the implementation specifically around those.”

The reported resolutions: docked versus handheld
Digital Foundry’s findings, as summarized by Nintendo Life in 2026, provide the currently published technical figures. They are review observations, not specifications published by the game’s developer.
| Play mode | Reported dynamic internal render range | Output target | How to read the figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docked | 540p–1080p | 1080p | The internal resolution can fall below the target; DLSS reconstructs the output for a 1080p signal. |
| Handheld | 360p–720p | 720p | The game targets a 720p signal while the internal render varies with the scene and performance load. |
A range is not a frame-by-frame schedule. The report does not say how long the game spends at any particular point in either range, nor does it say that the lowest value is reached in every demanding scene. It also does not establish that the game is always rendering at the top of the range when the scene is simple.
Because the docked target and handheld target differ, the two modes should not be expected to look identical on equivalent displays. A television usually presents the docked output much larger than the Switch 2’s built-in screen, so differences in reconstruction detail, scaling, and viewing distance can be more apparent on a TV even when both modes are operating as designed.

A major step up from the original Switch version
The technical-review summary calls image quality a highlight of the remaster and describes a vast improvement over the original Switch release. Reviewers specifically point to more detailed environments and upgraded scenery and character texture assets. Those observations concern the overall presentation, not just the upscaler: higher-quality assets and broader rendering improvements contribute to what players see.

The improvement therefore should not be reduced to “DLSS makes 540p look like native 1080p.” DLSS is one part of a larger remaster. It helps the game deliver a higher-resolution output within Switch 2’s performance budget, while the upgraded assets provide more source detail for that reconstruction to work with.
Why output resolution and native resolution are different
When the internal render is below the output target, fine geometry, foliage, hair, distant objects, and texture patterns begin with fewer source pixels. Reconstruction can infer or preserve detail using temporal information, but it cannot guarantee that every small feature will match an image rendered natively at the target resolution. The visible result depends on the scene, camera movement, lighting, motion vectors, and the quality of the game’s tuning.
Conversely, a frame rendered internally near the top of the reported range has more source information before reconstruction. A dynamic system can move between those conditions as the workload changes. The published figures show the possible range, not a permanent image-quality level.
What has not been measured publicly in the available reporting
The sources used for this explanation do not provide a controlled side-by-side image test, a numerical sharpness score, or an artifact rate. They do not confirm how often players will see ghosting, shimmer, breakup around moving objects, or other temporal-reconstruction behavior. Such effects can vary by scene and camera motion, so they should not be presented as established characteristics of this release without a documented test.

Why game-specific tuning matters
DLSS is not a universal switch that produces the same image in every game. The renderer must provide motion and depth information in a form the reconstruction system can use, and the developer must balance detail retention, stability in motion, latency, and performance. The Witcher 3 has a different pipeline, asset mix, world scale, and workload from Cyberpunk 2077. Shatulo’s comments indicate that the team used prior experience as a foundation but retuned the implementation around those differences.
That statement supports a practical conclusion: Switch 2 owners should judge The Witcher 3’s image on its own results rather than assuming that settings or artifacts from another title will carry over. It also explains why the interview confirms tuning without supplying a single universal “DLSS quality” number.
DLSS 4.5 and Ray Reconstruction: keep the platforms separate
The official Remastered feature list names DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction in its PC-specific feature section. That wording does not establish that the Switch 2 version uses DLSS 4.5 or Ray Reconstruction. The Switch 2 interview confirms DLSS, but it does not identify a version.
Accordingly, descriptions of the Switch 2 release should use the confirmed wording—DLSS with game-specific tuning—and should not import the PC feature list as though it were a Switch 2 specification.

Choosing between docked and handheld play
| Question | Docked play | Handheld play |
|---|---|---|
| Target signal reported by the technical review | 1080p | 720p |
| Reported internal range | 540p–1080p | 360p–720p |
| Where differences are easiest to notice | Large television displays can make reconstructed fine detail and scaling easier to inspect. | The smaller built-in display and normal handheld viewing distance can make differences less conspicuous, although the lower target still applies. |
| Evidence status | The ranges and the reported difference between modes come from technical-review reporting, not a publisher specification or a controlled image-quality score. | |
If your priority is examining distant detail on a large screen, docked mode gives the higher reported output target. If you value portability, handheld mode remains a separate presentation with its own target and dynamic range; it should not be described as a 1080p image merely because the game also supports 1080p when docked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate the image on your own system
The published evidence answers what the game is designed to target, but personal viewing conditions affect whether the change is obvious. A useful, non-laboratory check is to compare the same scenes rather than relying on memory.
- Use identical scenes. Stand still in a busy outdoor area, then repeat the observation in a settlement or interior with dense geometry. Note foliage, distant structures, character hair, and fine texture patterns.
- Check both stillness and movement. Look at the image with the camera stationary, then pan slowly and move through the scene. Temporal reconstruction can behave differently when objects and the camera are moving.
- Compare modes on their intended displays. Examine docked output on the television you normally use and handheld output on the built-in screen. Do not treat a television-scaled handheld feed as a like-for-like test.
- Separate asset detail from reconstruction detail. Texture and scenery upgrades may be visible even when internal resolution changes. A sharper asset is not proof that every frame is natively rendered at the output target.
- Record the software state. Patch updates can alter rendering behavior. If you are documenting an issue, note the game version, system mode, scene, camera movement, and display rather than generalizing from one moment.
This kind of observation can tell you what matters to your eyes, but it does not replace a controlled capture or establish a universal artifact rate.
Release and upgrade context
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched for Switch 2 on September 29, 2026. It includes the base game and the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. Owners of the original Switch edition can claim the Remastered version on Switch 2 at no additional cost; the publisher’s announcement explicitly includes owners of physical copies.
The original Switch Complete Edition launched in digital and retail formats on a game card and included the base game, both story expansions, and 16 free DLCs. That history is relevant if you do not already own the qualifying Switch edition, but it does not prove current retailer stock, the accuracy of a particular listing, regional eligibility, or the existence of a physical Switch 2 Remastered card. Check the upgrade terms for your region and the exact edition you own before buying anything.
What is confirmed, and what remains open
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Does the Switch 2 remaster use DLSS? | Yes. The developer confirms DLSS and says it was tuned specifically for The Witcher 3. |
| What resolutions were reported? | A technical-review summary reports 540p–1080p internal rendering with a 1080p docked target, and 360p–720p with a 720p handheld target. |
| Is every docked frame native 1080p? | No. The reported dynamic ranges explicitly show that internal rendering can be below the output target. |
| Which DLSS version is used on Switch 2? | Not stated in the developer interview or the technical-review summary. |
| Does Switch 2 use the PC feature-list wording “DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction”? | Not established. That wording appears in the official PC feature section and should not be transferred to Switch 2. |
| What is the exact sharpness gain or artifact rate? | No quantified sharpness score, controlled comparison, or verified artifact rate is supplied by the available sources. |
| Could a later patch change launch behavior? | Yes, in principle. A claim about current bugs or image artifacts should be tied to the specific patch version being discussed. |
Who will notice the difference most?
- Owners of the original Switch release: The remaster’s upgraded assets and improved presentation should be readily apparent as a generational step within the Nintendo versions, while the upgrade path avoids another purchase for qualifying owners.
- Players using a large television: The higher docked output target and larger viewing area make fine detail and scaling behavior easier to inspect.
- Handheld-focused players: The game has a distinct 720p target and lower reported internal range in this mode. The smaller screen may make some differences less obvious, but handheld is not simply docked output shown at a reduced size.
- Image-quality purists: Treat the release as dynamically reconstructed rather than uniformly native. The available reporting supports a strong improvement, not a claim of native-equivalent detail in every frame.
The practical reading of the evidence is straightforward: DLSS lets The Witcher 3 aim for a higher displayed resolution than its changing internal render would otherwise allow, and the remaster is widely described as a major improvement over the original Switch image. The exact behavior from scene to scene, the Switch 2 DLSS version, and any specific reconstruction artifacts remain questions that require versioned, controlled testing rather than assumptions.
