“DLSS 3.7 mod support” on an AMD handheld means running NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E neural upscaler through the unofficial HelixSR project—not receiving official DLSS support from AMD or NVIDIA. HelixSR translates the network into Direct3D 12 compute shaders, so it does not require an NVIDIA GPU, Tensor Cores, NVIDIA drivers, CUDA, or ROCm.
The practical result is conditional: a compatible Direct3D 12 game may use DLSS-style super resolution on AMD hardware, but compatibility depends on the game’s existing upscaler path, operating system, GPU architecture, and mod route. HelixSR supplies upscaling only; it does not add its own frame-generation technology.

What “DLSS 3.7 mod support” actually means
The phrase describes a community workaround rather than a new AMD feature. HelixSR says it is an independent, unofficial project that runs NVIDIA’s existing DLSS Model E neural network on non-NVIDIA hardware. Its implementation uses standard Direct3D 12 compute shaders instead of NVIDIA Tensor Cores or an NVIDIA graphics driver. It also does not depend on CUDA or ROCm.

That distinction matters: the mod is executing the same network concept through a different software and hardware path, not turning an AMD GPU into an officially supported DLSS device. The project is not affiliated with or endorsed by NVIDIA, AMD, or OptiScaler. See the current HelixSR documentation before installing, because project instructions and compatibility can change.

What an AMD handheld can and cannot gain
Super resolution
When the game and installation route line up, HelixSR can provide the DLSS Model E super-resolution pass. The game renders internally at a lower resolution and the neural upscaler reconstructs an output resolution, reducing the workload compared with native rendering. The exact benefit depends on the title, resolution, preset, GPU limits, and the cost of the upscaling pass itself.
No built-in frame generation
HelixSR does not include its own frame-generation system. It can leave a game’s separate frame-generation feature, or OptiScaler’s supported FSR frame generation, in use where that game and configuration permit it. Upscaling and frame generation should therefore be evaluated as two separate features: installing HelixSR does not automatically create interpolated frames or reduce input latency.
Game-by-game support
A game must follow a documented Direct3D 12 and upscaler-input path. HelixSR’s project instructions focus on games that already expose a suitable FSR, DLSS, or XeSS integration. A game having a graphics option labeled “DLSS” does not by itself prove that the experimental loader route will work, and a game using Direct3D 12 does not guarantee that every mod route is compatible.
Which AMD hardware and operating systems are in scope?
HelixSR lists AMD RDNA 1 and newer GPUs as supported targets and excludes Radeon Vega. That is a project compatibility statement, not a guarantee for every handheld model, firmware version, driver branch, or game.
The project documents both Windows and Linux paths, including a Steam Deck-oriented setup. However, its stated development and testing configuration is an AMD BC-250 running Linux with Mesa RADV. The project says other GPUs and Windows have not been tested by its developers. Consequently, a Steam Deck owner should treat the instructions as a possible route, not as a promise of stable support for every Steam Deck revision or title.

How the documented installation routes differ
HelixSR offers several routes because games expose different upscaler interfaces. Select the route that matches the game instead of installing every component at once.

|---|---|---|
| Replace the FSR 3.1 upscaler DLL | The game uses an FSR 3.1 upscaler DLL that HelixSR can replace. | Only titles with the expected DLL and compatible loading behavior qualify. |
| Bundled official OptiScaler route | The game has a suitable DLSS, XeSS, or FSR 2 input that can be handled through OptiScaler. | OptiScaler compatibility and known issues vary by game; consult its upstream README. |
| Experimental loader route | The game’s own DLSS option is used to invoke HelixSR. | Testing is limited, the route is not recommended for anti-cheat games, and it cannot coexist with another mod that places dxgi.dll beside the game executable. |
These are implementation paths, not quality presets. The same game may behave differently depending on which route it accepts, and a route that works after an update can fail when the game changes its renderer or bundled DLLs.
Linux and Steam Deck setup: what the project documents
On Linux and Steam Deck, HelixSR documents running helixsr-setup.sh. The setup process may use the system Python and NumPy. On read-only systems such as SteamOS and Bazzite, the documentation describes a portable Python option instead. The exact prompts and supported modes are project-controlled, so use the current instructions at the project page rather than copying an old command sequence.
- Identify the game’s renderer and existing upscaler. Confirm that it uses Direct3D 12 and that its DLSS, FSR, or XeSS implementation matches one of the documented routes.
- Read the current HelixSR setup instructions and choose the route for that title: FSR 3.1 DLL replacement, the OptiScaler path, or the experimental loader.
- On Linux or Steam Deck, run the project’s
helixsr-setup.shas documented. Choose the portable Python option if the system is read-only and the installer offers it. - Back up the game directory and record the original DLL names before replacing or adding files. This gives you a clean rollback path.
- Launch the game, enable the corresponding in-game upscaler option, and verify that the image changes and frame-time behavior are sensible before adding any separate frame-generation setting.
- If the game fails to start, remove the mod files or restore the originals, then test the title without HelixSR. Do not combine the experimental loader with another local
dxgi.dllmod.
Neither HelixSR nor OptiScaler establishes that anti-cheat systems will allow injection. The experimental loader is specifically described as unsuitable for anti-cheat games, so single-player or offline testing is the safer context unless the game publisher explicitly permits the modification.
How OptiScaler fits into the arrangement
OptiScaler is an interoperability layer rather than a replacement GPU driver. Its upstream README describes replacing an existing upscaler in games that already support DLSS 2+, FSR 2+, or XeSS. HelixSR uses that layer as one installation route, allowing the game’s existing upscaler interface to feed the community implementation.

This does not make every supported game interchangeable. OptiScaler lists title-specific compatibility information and known issues, while HelixSR adds its own renderer and network constraints. Check both projects for the particular game, and expect updates to require reinstalling or revisiting the configuration.

Performance: what the published timings do and do not show
HelixSR publishes GPU time for its upscaling pass on an AMD BC-250 clocked at 2,000 MHz. These are project-reported measurements, not independent benchmarks, and they are not total game frame times or Steam Deck-specific results.
| Output resolution | Mode and input resolution | Reported upscaling-pass time |
|---|---|---|
| 1,920 × 1,080 | Quality, 1,280 × 720 input | 1.13 ms per upscaled frame |
| 2,560 × 1,440 | Quality, 1,707 × 960 input | 1.73 ms per upscaled frame |
| 3,840 × 2,160 | Performance, 1,920 × 1,080 input | 3.50 ms per upscaled frame |
Use those figures only to understand the cost of the upscaling pass on the stated test configuration. Whole-game FPS also includes simulation, geometry, lighting, memory traffic, driver overhead, display synchronization, and any frame-generation work. A lower internal resolution can improve performance substantially in a GPU-bound title, but the mod itself still consumes GPU time.
How to compare HelixSR with native FSR
The relevant comparison is not simply “DLSS versus FSR.” Evaluate the complete path the handheld can actually run:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Image quality: No independent, controlled comparison establishing that HelixSR beats native FSR or native rendering on AMD handhelds was identified. Treat screenshots and social-media claims as demonstrations, not verified benchmarks.
- Frame time: Measure the complete game frame, not only the upscaling pass. Record the same scene, resolution, quality mode, driver, and power limit.
- Latency: Upscaling and frame generation affect latency differently. A frame-generation toggle should be assessed separately from the HelixSR pass.
- Stability: Test loading screens, cutscenes, resolution changes, suspend/resume, and game updates. A mod that renders correctly in one scene can still fail during a renderer transition.
- Support status: Native FSR is an official game-integrated technology where the title and hardware qualify. HelixSR is an unofficial per-game workaround with a narrower compatibility envelope.
How official AMD FSR differs from this mod
AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology page describes official, game-integrated FSR implementations and supported-hardware paths. Depending on the title, a player may select FSR from the game’s graphics menu or use an AMD Software option to substitute ML-based upscaling in qualifying games.
That official support should not be conflated with HelixSR. AMD integration is maintained through the game and AMD’s software stack; HelixSR modifies the game’s upscaler path with community files. The two approaches can expose different controls, failure modes, and update requirements.
AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 25.3.1 release notes state that that specific package does not support handheld gaming devices and direct users to OEM device-specific drivers. This warning is scoped to the named driver package. It is not evidence that every AMD handheld, every OEM driver, every FSR feature, or every community mod is universally unsupported.

Common failure points and recovery
The game will not launch
Restore the original DLLs or remove the injected files, then launch without HelixSR. The most likely causes are an incompatible route, a conflicting dxgi.dll, a game update, or an anti-cheat and integrity check rejecting the modification.

The game launches but the option does nothing
Confirm that the game is using Direct3D 12, that the intended upscaler is selected in its menu, and that the installed route matches the game’s actual DLL or input interface. A title can display a DLSS or FSR label while loading a different implementation than the one the mod expects.
Performance is worse
Compare full-frame GPU time with the native or native-AMD baseline at the same output resolution. The neural pass has its own cost, and a title that is CPU-bound or limited by memory bandwidth may gain little from reducing internal resolution.
Artifacts or unstable output appear
Return to the game’s native upscaler and test the same scene. If the artifact disappears, report the title and configuration through the project’s current issue process rather than assuming the handheld GPU is defective. Since the project says its output is close to, but not identical with, NVIDIA DLSS, visual differences are expected even when the route is functioning.
Should you try it on an AMD handheld?
HelixSR is most defensible as an experiment for a compatible Direct3D 12 game when the native upscaler produces an unsatisfactory result and you can safely restore the original files. It is not a universal DLSS switch for AMD handhelds, and the available evidence does not establish a model-specific Steam Deck performance guarantee or a controlled image-quality advantage over FSR.
Before installing, make a backup, confirm the GPU architecture and renderer, check the current HelixSR and OptiScaler compatibility notes, and avoid the experimental loader in anti-cheat games. If the game already offers an official FSR mode that meets your needs, that route has fewer moving parts and a clearer support relationship.
