A six-year-old phone is not automatically obsolete. It can still handle calls, messaging, web browsing and streaming if its battery, storage, network support and apps remain suitable. The decisive questions are its exact model, security-update status, battery condition, repair cost and whether it still meets your needs—not the calendar alone.
What usually changes after six years
Battery life and power delivery
Battery wear is often the first change you notice. Lithium-ion cells lose peak power capability as they chemically age. When an aging battery cannot supply instantaneous power, a phone may shut down unexpectedly or enable performance-management behavior to prevent another shutdown. Apple explains that an authorized service provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity on supported models.

Battery runtime depends on the model, charging history, temperature and usage, so age alone cannot establish a cycle count or a guaranteed remaining capacity. Check the phone’s built-in battery diagnostics, note unexpected shutdowns and obtain a model-specific replacement quote before deciding.

Security and operating-system support
Support policy is a hard boundary because an otherwise usable phone can become a liability when it no longer receives security fixes. Update life varies by exact model and sales region. The Associated Press reported in 2026 that Google’s Pixel 8 and newer phones receive seven years of Android and security updates, while Samsung announced seven years of operating-system and security updates for supported devices in 2024. Samsung had previously promised four years of operating-system upgrades for selected Galaxy phones in 2022. Older or unsupported models can have shorter windows.

Find the manufacturer’s support page for your precise model and check both the last security-patch date and the stated end date. Keep the operating system and apps current while updates remain available; experts cited by the Associated Press say this supports privacy, security and battery-management features.
Storage, heat and app demands
There is no authoritative universal percentage for how much slower a phone becomes after six years. A phone may feel sluggish because storage is nearly full, apps now require more memory, the battery is limiting peak power, or sustained heat has affected performance. Clearing unused media and apps can reveal whether storage—not the processor—is the immediate problem. Thermal behavior also varies with climate, case design and workload.

Keep, repair or replace: a practical decision

How to check your phone before spending money
- Identify the exact model. Open Settings and look under About, Device information or General › About. Record the model number, storage capacity and software version.
- Verify security support. Use the manufacturer’s support page for that model. Record the latest installed patch and the published end date, if one is provided.
- Run battery diagnostics. Check battery health or service messages, then look for rapid drain, overheating and unexpected shutdowns. A health percentage is a diagnostic clue, not a universal replacement threshold.
- Test required tasks. Confirm that banking, authentication, messaging, navigation, streaming and work apps install and operate. Test Wi‑Fi, cellular bands, Bluetooth, cameras, microphones, speakers, charging and biometric unlock.
- Check storage. Review the storage screen, remove unneeded downloads and photos, and retest the slowest tasks. Back up data before deleting anything.
- Price the repair. Compare a model-specific battery quote with parts and labor for any other fault. iFixit’s repair database shows that parts, manuals and battery access differ substantially by brand and model. Apple also documents diagnostics, genuine-part options and reuse or trade-in programs.
- Compare replacement value. Set the complete repair total beside the price of a warranty-backed refurbished phone that has longer remaining software support. Include data transfer, accessories and any trade-in value.
When a battery replacement makes sense
Replacing the battery is most defensible when the phone still receives security updates, runs the apps you need, has adequate storage and has no display, charging-port, modem or camera failure. Use a battery made for the exact model, verify safety certification and confirm whether the repair requires adhesive removal or specialized tools. A damaged or swollen battery should not be punctured, bent or installed; stop using the phone and seek qualified service.

When replacement is the safer choice
Replace the phone when security updates have ended, an essential app will not run, the device lacks the network bands you need, or several major parts are failing. Replacement is also sensible when the repair estimate approaches the cost of a suitable refurbished model with a warranty and a clearly documented update policy. Transfer data securely, sign out of accounts, remove the SIM or eSIM, erase the old device and verify that two-factor authentication works on the replacement before recycling or trading in the old one.

Six years is a useful prompt to inspect support, battery and compatibility, not a verdict by itself. A well-maintained phone with continuing updates can remain practical; a newer phone with ended support or a failing battery may be the worse tool. Historical research found that the median mobile-phone lifespan changed from 4.8 to 4.6 years between 2000 and 2005, but that study is historical context, not a forecast for today’s smartphones. Your exact model’s support policy and condition provide the meaningful answer.
