Viking Age people did not follow one standardized theory of magic. The evidence instead points to several local traditions, with seiðr the best-known named practice. Later accounts connect seiðr with prophecy, trance, knowledge of hidden or other worlds, and attempts to influence events. They describe practitioners called völur (singular völva), while archaeology has found staffs and unusual grave goods that may belong to ritual specialists. None of this is a surviving rulebook: most written accounts were recorded after the Viking Age by Christian authors, and objects in graves rarely identify their use with certainty.
The most responsible answer to “Did Vikings believe in magic?” is therefore qualified. Some people clearly regarded divination and supernatural influence as meaningful possibilities, but beliefs varied by place and time, and the sources cannot reconstruct one universal Viking system or tell us exactly how a seiðr ritual was performed.

What seiðr meant in the surviving evidence
Seiðr is a named practice associated in the sources with obtaining knowledge and trying to affect what happens. The National Museum of Denmark’s account of Viking seeresses describes it through Icelandic saga material and archaeological finds. Its reconstruction links seiðr to trance, seeking information from other worlds, prophecy and attempts to influence events.
Those associations should not be converted into a fixed definition with a known sequence of gestures, words or ingredients. The museum is interpreting sparse literary and archaeological evidence; no contemporary Viking manual survives. “Magic” is a convenient modern category for practices that the sources treat as supernatural or extraordinary, but it can blur distinctions that mattered to people at the time, including prophecy, fate, ritual expertise and religious devotion.

Divination and changing outcomes
Two ideas recur in the evidence. A practitioner might seek information about what is hidden or what may happen, and a practitioner might try to alter events. The first is divinatory: it concerns knowledge of fate, circumstances or other worlds. The second is interventionist: it concerns directing an outcome rather than merely discovering it. The sources associate both possibilities with seiðr, but they do not establish how often either was attempted or whether all communities understood the practice in the same way.
Trance is an association, not a documented technique
Museum interpretations connect seiðr with trance. That tells us how the practice is characterized in the evidence, not what a session looked like in detail. There is no securely documented Viking Age script that explains how a practitioner entered a trance, what participants did, or how a prediction was judged. Modern ceremonies that claim to reproduce seiðr should not be presented as historical reconstructions on the basis of these sources alone.
Who was a völva?
Völva (plural völur) is commonly translated as a seeress. Museum accounts use the term for women described as practitioners who could be summoned by a household or settlement. The National Museum of Denmark says such seeresses could be respected when called on for help. That literary picture does not prove that every practitioner enjoyed the same status, or that every woman associated with a staff was a völva.

Respect, fear and social position
A specialist who was invited to advise a settlement may have been treated with respect, yet supernatural power could also make a person controversial or feared. The surviving evidence does not provide a single social profile. Some graves interpreted as belonging to possible practitioners are wealthy, but wealth alone cannot identify a person’s occupation, reputation or beliefs. Nor does a burial show whether the living community admired, distrusted or simply commemorated the deceased.

Why “sorceress” can mislead
English words such as “sorceress” often suggest a stable profession with agreed techniques. The evidence is less tidy. Völva is a source-based label for a seeress figure, while “sorcery” is a broad modern description. Use both terms cautiously and specify whether a claim comes from a later text or from an archaeological interpretation.
What staffs and graves can—and cannot—tell us
Iron staffs occur in Viking Age graves. The National Museum of Denmark’s discussion of magic staffs notes that they are often found in wealthy women’s graves and examines examples including Köpingsvik. Because saga descriptions connect seeresses with staffs, archaeologists have sometimes interpreted these objects as signs of ritual authority. That is a plausible reading, not a universal identification rule.
| Evidence | What it can support | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Later saga descriptions | That authors associated seeresses and seiðr with prophecy, trance or influence over events. | The exact Viking Age ritual, or the beliefs of every community. |
| Iron staff in a grave | That the object was intentionally buried and may have marked status or a ritual role. | That the deceased was a völva, or how the staff was used. |
| Unusual plant or metal objects | Material evidence for a distinctive burial assemblage that merits interpretation. | A definite magical recipe, drug use or religious identity. |
| Decoration on a specific staff | Possible symbolic connections proposed by museum specialists. | A settled meaning accepted by all scholars. |
The woman from Fyrkat
The National Museum’s account of a possible seeress from Fyrkat describes a grave containing a metal staff, henbane seeds and other unusual objects. The combination supports an interpretation that the woman may have held a special ritual role. It does not independently prove what the objects were used for, whether henbane was consumed, or what the deceased believed. A grave is a selected burial context, not a direct recording of a person’s activities during life.

Staff-bearing burials from places such as Köpingsvik are part of a broader pattern discussed by the Danish museum. Their concentration in some wealthy women’s graves has encouraged the seeress interpretation, but the pattern does not amount to a systematic inventory of all Viking magical practice. The identity, date and local customs of each burial still matter, and an unusual object can have more than one possible function.

The Klinta staff and competing interpretations
The Swedish History Museum dates the Klinta staff to the Viking Age and calls it a possible völva staff. Its decoration has been proposed as a reference to Freyja, Yggdrasil or the thread of life. These are interpretive possibilities, not deciphered labels placed on the object by its maker.
The same museum notes that scholars have also interpreted staffs as roasting spits, measuring rods or sceptres. This disagreement is important: an object’s shape, material and burial location do not automatically reveal a magical function. The Klinta example illustrates how archaeologists weigh context, comparison and symbolism while keeping alternative explanations open.
How reliable are the written sources?
The most vivid stories about seiðr and seeresses come from texts written down after the Viking Age. The Swedish History Museum’s overview of sources for Norse mythology explains that surviving stories were committed to writing after the old faith had largely been replaced by Christianity. The writers were Christian and may have misunderstood, reshaped or mocked practices they described.

What archaeology adds—and why it remains uncertain
Archaeology supplies contemporary material evidence: staffs, graves, plants and other objects deposited in Viking Age contexts. It can show what was made, carried or buried, and can reveal patterns in age, sex, wealth and location. It cannot automatically recover a person’s intentions or spoken beliefs.
From object to interpretation
- Document the context. Record the site, date, burial arrangement and associated objects rather than isolating a single artifact.
- Compare alternatives. Test a ritual explanation against practical functions such as a spit, measuring rod or sceptre.
- Use cautious language. “Possible völva staff” or “interpreted as a ritual object” reflects the evidence better than a definitive label.
- Check independent lines of evidence. A literary association becomes more persuasive when material context, chronology and comparable finds point in the same direction, but it still remains an interpretation.
This method explains why museums can present a grave as belonging to a “possible seeress” without claiming certainty. It also prevents one unusual burial from being used to describe every Viking community.

No. The Swedish History Museum’s account of Norse religion in the Viking Age emphasizes local customs, or siðr, rather than a single standardized system. Religious practice changed across regions and over time. Christianity coexisted with older customs by the 11th century, so even the transition period cannot be reduced to a simple switch from “pagan” belief to Christian belief.

A practical way to evaluate a claim about Viking magic
When you encounter a dramatic statement—such as “all Viking women feared seeresses” or “this staff proves a spell”—separate the claim into evidence levels:
| Level | Appropriate wording | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Documented association | “The source describes…” | A later account associates seiðr with prophecy. |
| Archaeological observation | “The grave contained…” | A Fyrkat burial contained a metal staff and henbane seeds. |
| Scholarly interpretation | “The object may have been…” | The Klinta staff may have belonged to a völva. |
| Unsupported generalization | Do not state as fact. | Every staff-bearing burial was a sorceress. |
This distinction keeps the strongest conclusions in view without pretending that ambiguous evidence is conclusive.
What remains unknown
The evidence does not settle the exact techniques of seiðr: no securely identified ritual script, choreography, initiation process or universal set of tools survives. It also cannot determine how many practitioners existed, how commonly people consulted them, or whether a staff was used during life rather than serving as a status symbol in death.
Nor can modern labels answer questions the sources never record, such as whether a particular individual personally believed a prediction or regarded an object as sacred. Those limits are not a failure of history; they are the reason careful accounts distinguish a demonstrated fact from a plausible reconstruction.
