Fossils support plant eating in some members, while differences in teeth, beaks and jaw mechanics point to different ways of processing food. A study published on 10 October 2026 reports adaptations for eating fleshy fruits in one Late Cretaceous oviraptorosaur, but the indexed abstract available here does not establish the species or the study’s detailed methods. The famous “egg thief” story, meanwhile, arose from a mistaken reading of a nest association—not proof that oviraptorosaurs never ate eggs.
What the fossils support—and what they do not
The best-supported answer is a varied one: different oviraptorosaurs may have used different foods and feeding strategies. Some fossil features are consistent with plant eating; jaw anatomy suggests that groups differed in how they could process food; and a 2026 study reports fruit-eating adaptations in a Late Cretaceous member. None of these findings establishes one menu for the whole group.

That distinction matters because “what did this dinosaur eat?” can refer to several different levels of evidence. Food preserved in a body cavity can point toward a particular meal. Worn teeth may indicate how an animal used its mouth. Jaw mechanics can suggest what kinds of movements or forces were possible. A nest association may reveal behavior, but only after researchers consider alternatives such as brooding or shared preservation. These clues answer related, not identical, questions.

The fossil evidence is more specific when tied to individual specimens and taxa, and less certain when extended to the entire group.

Evidence for plant eating in particular oviraptorosaurs
Incisivosaurus: enlarged, worn front teeth
Incisivosaurus had enlarged front teeth with wear. Those teeth are a clue consistent with plant feeding: their shape and wear can inform hypotheses about what the animal did with its mouth. They do not, on their own, identify a particular plant or show that plants made up its entire diet. The inference belongs to Incisivosaurus, not automatically to every oviraptorosaur.
Caudipteryx: clusters of gastroliths
Clusters of stones known as gastroliths in Caudipteryx have been interpreted as evidence for a gastric mill: stones in the digestive system could help break down food. This supports a way of processing food, but it does not reveal a precise menu. In particular, gastroliths alone do not name a plant species or prove that the animal ate plants exclusively.
Ningyuansaurus: possible seeds
Possible seeds reported in the body-cavity region of Ningyuansaurus provide a more direct potential link to food than jaw shape does. The appropriate word is “possible”: their identification and position should not be inflated into certainty about a meal or a species-wide, exclusive diet. As with other body-region contents, researchers have to assess whether material truly represents food associated with the animal.

A Late Cretaceous fruit-eating interpretation
A paper titled “Fruit-eating adaptations in a Late Cretaceous oviraptorosaur (Theropoda)” was published in Nature Communications on 10 October 2026. Its indexed abstract reports adaptations for eating fruit and argues for a specialized herbivorous diet that included fleshy angiosperm fruits. This is a significant additional indication of dietary diversity, but the abstract available here does not provide enough detail to identify the animal, assess the proposed adaptations, or judge how far the authors’ conclusion extends beyond that case. It should not be used to assign a fruit-heavy diet to all oviraptorosaurs.
What jaw anatomy can reveal about feeding
Teeth and stomach contents are not the only evidence available. Researchers can also examine the shape and structure of a jaw to develop hypotheses about how an animal handled food. Relevant features include the jaw joint, areas for muscle attachment, the depth and shape of the beak, and surfaces that could guide movement. These structures can constrain plausible actions and forces, but they do not record a meal in progress.
Ma and colleagues’ 2017 functional comparison proposed likely propalinal movement—a forward-and-back motion of the jaw—and found differences between caenagnathids and oviraptorids. Caenagnathid jaws were more consistent with shearing. Oviraptorid jaws appeared more consistent with relatively stronger bites and a possible crushing-related action. These are biomechanical interpretations, not direct observations of feeding or proof that one group ate meat and the other plants.

A jaw can help answer questions such as whether shearing or a stronger bite seems mechanically plausible. It cannot, by itself, establish exactly what was bitten. Several types of food may be compatible with a given action, and a toothless beak makes a direct reading from teeth impossible. In derived groups, researchers therefore compare beak and jaw form with other fossil animals and living animals, while treating those comparisons as hypotheses rather than evidence that the behavior was identical.
Oviraptorids and caenagnathids were not interchangeable
Oviraptoridae and Caenagnathidae are different groups within Oviraptorosauria. In the 2017 functional analysis, oviraptorids had comparatively deeper, more downturned beaks and jaws interpreted as capable of relatively strong bites with possible crushing-related action. Caenagnathid jaw features were more consistent with shearing. The contrast suggests different processing capacities, not a simple dietary division in which one group was carnivorous and the other herbivorous.
For derived North American caenagnathids such as Anzu, the authors of a 2014 study proposed a generalist interpretation: these animals may have used vegetation, small animals and perhaps eggs. This is an ecological synthesis based on the evidence considered by those authors, not a claim that stomach contents directly document each item. “May have” and “perhaps” are important qualifications here.

The practical rule is to keep the taxonomic scale of a claim aligned with its evidence. A feature in one specimen is evidence about that specimen. A comparison between two groups may suggest distinct capabilities. Neither automatically describes every species, and neither alone establishes the proportions of different foods in a diet.

The name Oviraptor—often rendered as “egg thief”—reflects the interpretation of a famous fossil association. The holotype was found with eggs that were initially assigned to Protoceratops. Because the dinosaur was beside eggs thought to belong to another dinosaur, the association was read as evidence of egg stealing.

Later identification showed that similar eggs were oviraptorid eggs. Other adults preserved over nests in brooding postures support nest tending as an explanation for those associations. For those fossils, the presence of an adult with eggs is therefore not proof of predation; it can be understood as an animal tending its own nest. This changes the interpretation of the famous evidence without establishing that oviraptorosaurs never ate eggs. Egg eating in other circumstances remains possible.
Best Value
Young Byronosaurus skulls found in a nest association have also been discussed as potential prey. The 2014 Anzu study cautioned that there was no evidence of predation and that a taphonomic explanation was plausible. Taphonomy concerns what happened to remains between death and discovery, including how they were buried and preserved. Fossils found close together may reflect a shared depositional setting rather than a feeding event.
This is why “near” does not necessarily mean “eaten.” To interpret an association, scientists must ask whether the objects are actually food remains, whether their position supports a feeding event, and whether brooding, burial or preservation could explain the same arrangement. A nest can be informative about behavior while still being poor evidence for a predator’s meal.
How to judge a fossil diet claim
When a fossil is used to support a dietary conclusion, the key is to separate what was observed from what was inferred. A useful reading asks four questions: how directly does the evidence connect to food, what taxonomic range does it cover, what action does it imply, and what other explanation could produce the same fossil pattern?
| Evidence type | What it can support | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Material in a body-cavity region | A possible or likely food association, depending on identification and preservation | A certain meal, full diet, or species-wide menu without further evidence |
| Gastrolith clusters | A possible role for stones in food processing, such as a gastric mill interpretation | The exact food or an exclusively plant-based diet |
| Tooth shape and wear | How the teeth may have contacted or processed food; plant feeding inferences for features such as Incisivosaurus’s enlarged, worn front teeth | A unique food source or a universal diet for the clade |
| Jaw and beak mechanics | Possible movements and relative processing capacities, such as shearing or stronger, potentially crushing-related bites | A directly observed behavior or a definitive menu |
| Nest or nearby fossil association | Context that may be consistent with brooding, feeding or another interaction | Predation without evidence that excludes nesting or taphonomic alternatives |
The confidence language should match the evidence. Use “preserved” or “observed” for a fossil feature; “consistent with” or “suggests” for a supported interpretation; and “may have” for a broader behavioral or ecological proposal. This is not mere caution for its own sake. It tells the reader whether a conclusion comes from contents, anatomical function, or context—and how much interpretation stands between the fossil and the claim.
What remains uncertain about their menus
The available evidence supports dietary variation and several plausible feeding strategies, but it does not provide a single, complete menu for each lineage. Teeth, gastroliths and possible seeds offer distinct clues; jaw analysis addresses mechanics; nest fossils correct a historical misreading; and the 2026 abstract adds a fruit-eating interpretation without enough accessible detail here to evaluate its taxon-specific basis.
Those limits do not make the evidence uninformative. They define what each fossil can responsibly tell us. A claim about a particular meal needs more direct evidence than a claim about the action a jaw could perform. A claim about one species needs less extrapolation than a claim about an entire clade. Keeping those distinctions visible gives the clearest current answer: some oviraptorosaurs show evidence consistent with herbivory, feeding mechanics differed among groups, and the famous nest fossils do not prove egg theft.
