1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Apple’s new iPhone Duo form factor, most apps do not need a separate screen for every pose. The durable approach is to make the existing interface respond to available space, size classes, safe-area insets and changing scene bounds, while preserving the same state and information hierarchy as the device moves between its outer and inner displays. Apple’s September 9, 2026 guidance says familiar iPhone and iOS patterns still apply; the work is adapting those patterns to two displays, a hinge, asymmetric reserved regions and more varied window sizes.
What is different about iPhone Duo—and what is not
Apple describes iPhone Duo in its design update notes as its first folding iPhone. The developer implication is not a new, unrelated design language. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines state: “Although iPhone Duo is a new form factor, keep in mind that you’re still designing for iPhone, and Designing for iOS patterns and best practices still apply.” See Apple’s Designing for iPhone Duo guidance.

The device combines an outer display and an inner display and can be used in multiple poses. Available width and height can therefore change while an app is running, and the shape of the safe area may be asymmetric. A layout that assumes one fixed screen, one width, or one orientation will eventually clip content, leave controls in awkward positions or create a visibly different product every time the user changes pose.
Think of Duo as a new set of available-space conditions rather than a collection of special-case screens. Your app should:

- Resize continuously and choose layouts from size classes and scene bounds.
- Respect safe-area insets and layout margins around the hinge, camera region and other reserved areas.
- Keep navigation, controls, content state and the information hierarchy recognizable across displays.
- Use the larger inner display for additional context only when that context genuinely helps.
Design around available space, not a device name
Apple’s developer session recommends size classes for layout decisions on iPhone Duo instead of using interface orientation as a proxy. The inner display is described as regular in both dimensions, which can provide room for a sidebar or a two-column arrangement. Orientation alone cannot tell you whether that space is available, because the same physical pose can produce different window dimensions as system regions and multitasking conditions change.
| Condition | What Apple establishes | Design decision |
|---|---|---|
| Outer display | It is a separate display on the two-display device; the cited guidance does not state physical dimensions. | Use a compact presentation when the available width calls for it, but do not hard-code a “phone” width. |
| Inner display | Apple’s session describes it as regular in both horizontal and vertical size classes. | Consider a sidebar, split content or denser context when the regular space improves the task. |
| Pose changes | The device can be used in multiple poses and the available region can change. | Let constraints and traits select the layout; keep the same state while the view resizes. |
| Reserved regions | The outer camera region is always present and can expand into the Dynamic Island for Live Activities. | Read safe-area insets and keep content and actions clear of the reserved shape. |
SwiftUI: make size classes part of the experience
In SwiftUI, read the environment and choose the experience appropriate to the current available space. A simple pattern can switch between a single-column and a split presentation without checking whether the device is “Duo” or guessing its orientation:
struct MailView: View {
@Environment(.horizontalSizeClass) private var horizontalSizeClass
var body: some View {
Group {
if horizontalSizeClass == .regular {
MailListAndMessage()
} else {
MailList()
}
}
.padding(.horizontal)
}
}
The example is intentionally about space, not a product identifier. In a real app, also account for the vertical size class, safe-area behavior and the minimum width your content needs. A regular class is an opportunity for more context, not an instruction to fill every pixel with extra controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →UIKit: use trait collections
UIKit apps should make the same decision from the view or view controller’s trait collection. Test the horizontal and vertical size classes and update constraints or child view controllers when those traits change. Do not branch on a presumed hardware model or on UIUserInterfaceIdiom to infer the display’s exact capability; Apple’s session specifically advises against assumptions based on idiom.
override func traitCollectionDidChange(_ previousTraitCollection: UITraitCollection?) {
super.traitCollectionDidChange(previousTraitCollection)
let useSplitLayout = traitCollection.horizontalSizeClass == .regular
updateLayout(forSplitPresentation: useSplitLayout)
}
Use the normal UIKit lifecycle and constraint updates for your deployment target. The important rule is that a trait change is a layout event, not a reason to discard the current document, selection or navigation stack.
Do not refer to a presumed “main screen”
Apple’s “Prepare your app for iPhone Duo” Tech Talk warns that “main screen” is ambiguous on a two-display device and says that this assumption will be deprecated. Obtain the relevant environment from SwiftUI, the view controller’s trait collection, or the active scene’s bounds. When you need screen information in UIKit, access screens dynamically from the window scene rather than using a process-wide, presumed primary screen. The session is available at Apple Developer Tech Talk 111461.

Handle safe areas, the hinge and reserved regions
Safe areas are not just a notch workaround on Duo. Apple describes the outer camera region as always present; it may expand into the Dynamic Island for Live Activities. On the inner display, the hinge and other reserved regions can make the usable area asymmetric. Your content should be positioned from the insets the system reports, not from a centered rectangle that you calculated once.
Apply insets to content and controls
- Keep text, tappable rows, navigation controls and prominent actions inside the current safe area.
- Combine safe-area insets with layout margins so a readable column does not sit directly against an edge even when the inset is small.
- Allow the content region to be asymmetric. Do not “correct” an inset by adding equal padding on the opposite side.
- Recalculate placement after a display or pose change; the reserved shape is part of the current layout.
Apple’s Duo guidance also recommends keeping navigation and prominent actions in consistent relative positions across poses. That means a primary action should remain the primary action even if its absolute pixel coordinate changes.
Keep Live Activities and system regions out of the way
If your app supplies a Live Activity, design its presentation with the Dynamic Island expansion in mind. The camera region and expansion area are system-owned space; application content should not treat them as an empty canvas. The same principle applies to any system-reserved area exposed through safe-area APIs.
Preserve identity and state while the display changes
A user should be able to open a message on the outer display, unfold the device and continue reading that same message on the inner display. Apple calls for preserving functionality and element state as the app moves between displays. Avoid reconstructing the interface in a way that resets scroll position, selection, draft text, playback position or navigation.
Use progressive hierarchy, not a second product
The inner display can expose one additional level of information when it helps the task. Apple’s example is an email list beside the selected message. The list and message are not separate workflows: they are two levels of the same hierarchy, with the selected item remaining synchronized.
Recommended Free Tools
- Keep the same labels, ordering and terminology for shared functions.
- Expose a second pane only when the available space makes it useful and readable.
- Make selection and focus explicit so a user can tell which item controls the detail pane.
- When space contracts, collapse to the single-pane flow without losing the selected item or unsaved work.
This approach also benefits ordinary iPhone resizing, accessibility text sizes and localized strings. A wide layout that depends on short English labels is not a robust Duo layout.

Let toolbars adapt instead of spacing them by hand
Fixed spacer views are fragile when the width changes. Apple recommends grouping related toolbar items with system groups so the operating system can adapt their placement as available space changes. Put actions in semantic groups—such as navigation, editing and sharing—and let the toolbar resolve spacing and compression.
Do not use a series of hard-coded empty views to force a visual gap. Such gaps can push a destructive or primary action into a reserved region on one display and make the same toolbar look unbalanced on another. If an action is essential, keep it in a predictable relative position and provide the system with a sensible priority or grouping.
Test the ordinary adaptation cases as well as Duo
Apple’s general Layout guidance, updated September 9, 2026, says to preview across devices, orientations, localizations and text sizes, starting with the smallest and largest layouts. Duo adds more transitions, but it does not replace these baseline checks.
Build a practical test matrix
| Test axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Display | Open the same workflow on the outer and inner displays; verify state, selection, scroll position and navigation continuity. |
| Pose and resize | Change pose while a screen is visible. Check that constraints settle without clipping, jumps or a reset to the root screen. |
| Size classes | Exercise compact and regular combinations, including the inner display’s regular-by-regular condition. |
| Reserved regions | Inspect safe-area edges around the camera region, Dynamic Island expansion and any asymmetric inset. |
| Orientation | Rotate as a separate test. Ensure orientation is not the only trigger for choosing a layout. |
| Text size | Use large accessibility sizes and verify that labels, buttons, lists and split panes remain usable. |
| Localization | Test longer translated strings and right-to-left layouts where your app supports them. |
| Smallest and largest layouts | Start with the narrowest presentation and the widest regular presentation; test intermediate widths for graceful transitions. |
What to observe during a transition
- Does the app keep the same document, account, selection and draft?
- Do primary controls remain discoverable and tappable?
- Does text reflow without truncation or overlap?
- Does a sidebar collapse into the expected detail flow when width is lost?
- Are safe-area and margin changes reflected immediately rather than after a second navigation?
Apple’s materials provide design and implementation guidance, not a compatibility certification for every existing app. They also do not establish a required purchase or a specific third-party testing program. A physical Duo could provide valuable validation, but the guidance itself does not require buying one; use the previews and supported development environments available to your team, then validate on representative hardware when it is accessible.

Mistake: branching on orientation
Symptom: A landscape check displays a sidebar even when the usable width is insufficient, or keeps a narrow layout on a regular inner display.
Correction: Base the decision on horizontal and vertical size classes, scene bounds and content requirements. Treat orientation as a separate concern such as rotation-specific media behavior.

Mistake: positioning by visual centering
Symptom: A centered button or title drifts into the camera or hinge region when the safe area is asymmetric.
Correction: Anchor the element within the reported safe area and use layout margins. Check both displays and every supported pose.

A migration checklist for an existing app
- Inventory every view that assumes a fixed width, fixed height, centered rectangle or single primary screen.
- Map each workflow’s compact and regular presentations, including what information can share a pane.
- Replace orientation-based layout branches with size-class, trait-collection or scene-bound decisions.
- Audit safe-area and margin handling around every edge-to-edge view, toolbar and prominent action.
- Define which state must survive a display or pose change: selection, navigation, drafts, scroll position, playback and network activity.
- Group related toolbar actions semantically and remove spacer-based positioning.
- Preview the smallest and largest layouts, then test intermediate widths, text sizes, orientations and localizations.
- Exercise transitions repeatedly, including while editing or presenting a modal, and fix any state reset or clipped control.
The result should feel like one iPhone app that intelligently uses the space available—not a collection of pose-specific redesigns. Apple’s updated guidance, including the September 9, 2026 What’s new in Design entry, treats Duo as an extension of established iOS layout practice: responsive constraints, size classes, safe areas, clear hierarchy and continuity are the features that make the new form factor work.
