Custody and fees are architecture decisions, not labels added after integration. Before shipping a Bitcoin Lightning wallet or payment app, define who controls signing keys, which funds must remain online, how invoices expire, where liquidity comes from, and which party pays each class of fee. A Lightning payment can involve routing fees, Bitcoin transaction fees, liquidity-provider charges, and an application or service fee, each triggered by a different event.
This guide explains the custody boundaries, invoice lifecycle, liquidity mechanics, fee accounting, API choices, and operational controls developers should document and test against the exact node implementation and release they deploy.

Start with a precise custody model
In a self-custodial design, the user controls the keys needed to authorize movement of the user’s funds. That does not mean every component runs on the user’s device. A service can coordinate payments, operate infrastructure, or provide liquidity while the user retains signing authority. Describe the exact keys, channels, balances, and exit path covered by the term instead of calling an entire product simply non-custodial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon architecture choices
| Architecture | Who signs fund movements? | Operational trade-off | Questions to document |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted node and wallet | Your application or the user’s wallet, according to the key layout | Maximum control, but you operate Bitcoin connectivity, peers, channels, backups, and monitoring | Where are hot keys stored? How is an offline recovery performed? Who can open, close, or force-close channels? |
| Delegated infrastructure with user-held keys | The user-controlled signer authorizes movements; an operator may run nodes or coordinate routes | Less infrastructure work while preserving a defined signing boundary | Can the operator pause payments, substitute addresses, or access channel state? Can the user exit without operator approval? |
| LSP-assisted, non-custodial client | The user controls the user’s side of channels; the LSP controls its own side | Inbound liquidity and swaps are easier to obtain, but provider fees, availability, and channel terms matter | Which side of each channel does the provider own? What unilateral exit transaction is available? Are charges upfront or deducted from incoming funds? |
| Custodial service | The service controls the keys and can move pooled or account-level funds | Simple user experience and centralized liquidity, with counterparty and withdrawal dependency | What legal and operational controls govern withdrawals? What happens during an outage or service termination? |
LND’s developer guidance recommends keeping as little as practical in hot wallets. Lightning channel updates, however, require relevant keys to be online, so reducing hot-key exposure can conflict with always-on payment availability. Split responsibilities where possible: keep long-term reserves in a protected signing system, limit the balance exposed to an online node, and define how channels are restored after a node or key failure.

Make the exit path concrete
A custody statement should identify the transaction a user can make without a provider’s cooperation. Channel funds may be available instantly while the channel is usable, but an offline peer can force recovery through a non-cooperative close that takes longer and incurs an on-chain fee. Document which party can initiate that close, where the signed state is stored, and how the application communicates a delayed withdrawal.
Design invoices as a stateful, single-use workflow
A Lightning invoice is a payment request containing an amount (or an amount to be supplied later), a payment hash, an expiry, and other BOLT 11 fields. Core Lightning’s invoice RPC accepts amounts in millisatoshis and several bitcoin or satoshi precision forms, or any, and returns a token another Lightning daemon can pay.
Recommended invoice state machine
- Create. Generate a fresh payment preimage and derive the payment hash, or let the daemon generate them. If your application supplies a preimage, it must use a secure random source and keep the value secret until settlement.
- Issue. Store the invoice, requested amount, payment hash, creation time, expiry, intended order or account, and the implementation’s feature data. Show the payer the amount and expiry in a way that cannot be mistaken for a permanent payment address.
- Validate before paying. A payer should decode the invoice and inspect the destination, amount, payment hash, expiry, and supported features. Reject an expired request rather than attempting payment.
- Settle. Mark the invoice paid only after the node reports fulfillment. The payment preimage becomes publicly knowable when the payment is fulfilled, so the same invoice must not be accepted again.
- Expire or replace. If the expiry passes first, mark the invoice expired and issue a replacement. Do not silently recycle the old payment hash.
Core Lightning documents a default expiry of 604800 seconds, or one week. Treat that as an implementation default, not a universal protocol requirement: set an expiry appropriate for your order flow and verify the selected release’s behavior.

Protect invoice privacy
An invoice description is encoded in BOLT 11 and is visible to nodes that receive the invoice. Do not put passwords, identity documents, private notes, or other secrets in the description. Core Lightning supports a description-hash mode, commonly exposed as deschashonly, so the invoice carries a hash of an off-chain description instead of the description itself. Your application must retain the original description and verify it when the payment arrives.
Invoice details and feature flags can vary between implementations and protocol revisions. Validate decoding, amount handling, expiry, payment status, and error mapping against the current BOLT 11 specification and the exact LND or Core Lightning release you deploy.
Model every fee separately
There is no single network-wide Lightning fee. A user’s total cost depends on whether the payment is routed through other nodes, whether a channel touches the Bitcoin blockchain, whether a liquidity provider is involved, and whether an application service adds its own charge.

| Fee class | When it occurs | Typical payer or accounting owner | What your software should record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routing fee | A forwarding node successfully relays an HTLC | Usually the payment sender; forwarding nodes earn it | Per-hop base fee, proportional rate, total quoted fee, and final amount delivered |
| On-chain mining fee | Channel opening, cooperative or forced closing, swaps, or another Bitcoin transaction | The transaction creator or party funding the operation, depending on workflow | Transaction ID, fee rate or confirmation target, funding source, and confirmation delay |
| LSP liquidity charge | An LSP opens a channel, performs a swap, or supplies inbound capacity | The client, sometimes deducted from incoming funds | Quoted amount, whether charged upfront or netted, channel capacity delivered, and provider terms |
| Application or managed-service fee | The wallet or service processes a Lightning transaction or account operation | Defined by the product’s terms | Rate, minimum or maximum if any, currency, tax treatment, and whether routing fees remain additional |
Routing fees are policy-driven
A forwarding node’s routing fee is the difference between the HTLC amount it receives and the amount it forwards. The policy combines a fixed base fee with a proportional fee rate. For example, if the recipient requests 1,000 satoshis and the forwarding node charges one satoshi, the upstream payment must carry 1,001 satoshis. Routing fees are realized only when the payment succeeds.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fee policy changes the usefulness of a channel. Excessive rates discourage traffic; rates that are too low can drain a node’s outbound liquidity without adequate compensation. LND lets operators set defaults, specify policy when opening a channel, and update an existing channel with updatechanpolicy. Its FeeReport interface exposes current per-channel policy fields and collected revenue totals. Use that report for accounting instead of assuming one fee applies across the network.
On-chain fees and liquidity costs
Opening and closing channels require Bitcoin transactions. An operator may select a fee rate or confirmation target for those actions, trading cost against settlement speed. A non-cooperative close can leave funds unavailable longer while the transaction confirms and any timelocks mature. LND also documents funding a channel from a PSBT-compatible wallet or a raw signed transaction; verify model-level PSBT support before choosing hardware or offline-signing equipment.

LSP pricing is provider-specific. An LSP may charge upfront to cover mining fees and capital, or deduct its charge from an incoming payment, reducing the amount credited to the user. No universal amount or market average is established for LSP pricing.
As a dated product example, a July 21, 2026 closed-alpha announcement for Lightning Labs’ Wavelength described a one-basis-point service fee for Lightning transactions. The announcement said ordinary Lightning routing fees still applied, Bitcoin network fees applied when funds touched the chain, and alpha pricing could change. Treat that figure as product-specific historical pricing, not as a network standard or current benchmark.
Liquidity determines whether a payment can work
Channel capacity alone does not guarantee spendability. Payment success depends on where the balance sits, whether you have outbound capacity to send or inbound capacity to receive, the channel’s peer connectivity, and the peer’s own ability to forward traffic.

For receiving payments
- Reserve inbound capacity before advertising a large invoice.
- Track channel balances and pending HTLCs, not just total wallet balance.
- Use an LSP channel or swap when you need capacity that your peers cannot supply.
- Tell the payer when the requested amount exceeds currently usable inbound capacity instead of presenting repeated invoices that will fail.
For sending payments
- Maintain diversified peers rather than relying on a single poorly connected channel.
- Quote the routing fee and maximum total amount your policy allows.
- Account for temporary liquidity locked in in-flight HTLCs.
- Retry only with a fresh route and a valid, unexpired invoice; do not reuse a settled request.
Lightning funds can usually be spent instantly at lower cost than moving the same value on-chain. If a channel or peer is offline, retrieving funds may require a non-cooperative close and take longer. Your user interface should distinguish a temporary routing failure, an offline channel, an expired invoice, and a withdrawal waiting for on-chain confirmation.
Choose how to obtain inbound capacity
You can open and rebalance channels directly, use an LSP for swaps or channel openings, or integrate a managed service. Compare these approaches on key control, unilateral exit, who sources inbound capacity, rebalancing responsibility, outage behavior, and the exact fee mechanism. A provider retaining custody of its own side of a channel does not by itself make the user’s side custodial; the contract and key layout determine that boundary.
Match APIs and credentials to the implementation
LND interfaces
LND exposes lncli, gRPC, and REST interfaces. Its developer guide describes gRPC as the preferred programmatic interface. Use authenticated transport, protect TLS material, and treat macaroons as secrets. Issue credentials with only the RPC permissions an integration needs; never expose administrative endpoints directly to the public internet. Recheck current security guidance and field names when upgrading because the overview and APIs evolve.
Core Lightning invoice RPC
Core Lightning’s invoice RPC places responsibility on the caller when a payment preimage is supplied. A compromised or predictable preimage can let another party claim the payment, so daemon-generated preimages are safer unless a reviewed design requires application-generated values. Persist the returned label and payment hash so asynchronous settlement events can be matched to the correct order.
Protocol specifications and release pinning
The BOLTs repository’s transaction specification describes commitment-transaction fee allocation and collaborative transaction-fee handling. Its master branch is a moving document. Pin the BOLT revision, node release, and network assumptions used in production documentation and tests; do not treat current master text as an immutable standard.
Build an operational control plane
- Define the custody statement. List every key, signer, channel side, and service role. State who can authorize a spend and what happens if the operator disappears.
- Separate funds by risk. Set a hot-wallet limit for online channel operations and keep reserves behind a stronger signing process. Document backup and restore procedures for node data and channel state.
- Implement invoice states. Store creation, expiry, payment hash, amount, description handling, and settlement events. Schedule expiry processing and replacement issuance.
- Implement fee accounting. Record quoted and actual routing fees, on-chain transaction fees, LSP deductions, and service charges as separate ledger entries.
- Monitor liquidity. Alert on low inbound or outbound capacity, stuck HTLCs, offline peers, failed payments by channel, and channels approaching a force-close recovery path.
- Harden access. Encrypt transport, rotate credentials, scope macaroons or equivalent tokens, and keep signing interfaces off public networks.
- Test failure branches. Exercise expired invoices, duplicate settlement notifications, route failure, peer outage, cooperative close, forced close, delayed confirmation, and node restoration using the exact implementation release.
A practical decision checklist
- Can a user independently authorize movement of the funds described as self-custodial?
- Which keys must remain online for channel updates, and what balance is exposed?
- Can the user exit unilaterally, and which Bitcoin transaction and delay apply?
- What is the invoice expiry, and how does the application issue replacements?
- Is invoice text visible to forwarding nodes, and should a description hash be used?
- Are routing fees base-plus-proportional, and can operators inspect per-channel policy and revenue?
- Who pays channel funding and closing fees, and which confirmation target is selected?
- How is inbound liquidity obtained, and is any LSP charge upfront or deducted from receipts?
- What exact LND, Core Lightning, BOLT 11, and BOLTs revisions are supported?
- Which user-visible error explains an expired invoice, insufficient liquidity, offline peer, or pending on-chain recovery?
Bottom line
Choose custody, invoice handling, liquidity, and fee accounting as one integrated design. Keep key control and unilateral exit understandable, treat invoices as expiring single-use credentials, expose routing and on-chain costs separately, and make provider charges explicit. Then verify every API field, credential scope, channel behavior, and recovery path against the release you actually operate.
