Hardware and assembly are important, but the final price also reflects engineering and software investment, intellectual-property licensing, supply and manufacturing conditions, the phone’s configuration, the company’s margin goals, and the market where it is sold. A bill of materials (BOM) estimate is a snapshot of estimated hardware inputs—not a complete account of the product or a measure of profit.
What goes into a flagship phone’s price?
Manufacturers weigh the costs of designing, sourcing, building, licensing, distributing, supporting, and selling a particular phone configuration. They then set a price in light of expected demand, competitors, intended margin, and local market conditions. There is no universal formula that turns a BOM estimate into a retail price.

Several different figures are easy to confuse:
- BOM: an estimate of the components and, depending on the analysis, assembly included in a device.
- Factory cost: the cost of producing the phone; it may include more than the listed parts.
- Manufacturer selling price: the amount the maker receives through its sales arrangements.
- Retail price: what a consumer is asked to pay, before any applicable tax, carrier deal, or promotion.
Subtracting an estimated BOM from a phone’s retail price does not reveal the manufacturer’s per-phone profit. That subtraction does not account for all the costs and commercial arrangements between design and sale.

Which costs and choices affect the price?
Hardware and configuration
A flagship’s visible direct inputs include its display, processor or system-on-chip, memory and storage, cameras, radio-frequency components, battery, enclosure, sensors, and assembly. Their relative costs vary with design, suppliers, production yields, market conditions, and the model’s capacity. A BOM estimate for a base configuration therefore cannot be assumed to apply to a higher-storage version.

Recent industry estimates illustrate how quickly component mix can change. On August 10, 2026, TrendForce estimated that the BOM for a 256 GB iPhone 18 Pro could be about 38% higher than its predecessor’s, attributing the projected increase chiefly to memory. TrendForce also estimated memory’s share of the BOM for 256 GB iPhone Pro models at around 10% a year earlier and approximately 34% in 3Q26, and projected it could exceed 40% in 1H27. These are estimates and projections for a specific model and period—not audited costs or a confirmed retail-price change. TrendForce’s August 2026 analysis provides the model-specific estimate, while its component breakdown discusses memory’s estimated share.
Counterpoint Research reported on July 28, 2026, that its Memory Price Tracker showed smartphone memory prices rising by more than 80% quarter over quarter in Q2 2026. It described the resulting pressure on 2026 phone BOMs and discussed tiered pricing and more cost-optimized NAND in higher-capacity variants as possible manufacturer responses. This is a dated industry-research figure, not a standing rule for every phone or a prediction of a particular model’s retail price. Counterpoint’s analysis explains the scenarios it considered.

Engineering, software, and intellectual property
Hardware estimates leave out important parts of bringing a phone to market. Historical analysis by the World Intellectual Property Organization distinguishes factory costs from software and research-and-development spending, as well as licensing for standard-essential patents. Its examples are from older models, so they help explain the categories but should not be treated as current cost shares for today’s flagships. WIPO’s working paper provides that historical framework.

Supplier prices, production capacity, component shortages, manufacturing yields, and trade rules can affect costs or availability. Apple’s FY2024 Form 10-K says trade restrictions can increase the cost of products, components, and raw materials. It also says substantially all of Apple’s manufacturing is performed in whole or in part by outsourcing partners located primarily in mainland China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. This company disclosure establishes exposure to supply-chain and policy shifts; it does not show that a particular tariff changed the price of a specific phone. Apple’s FY2024 filing describes those risks and manufacturing arrangements.

Margin and market position
A company chooses how much of a cost increase to pass on. It might accept a lower margin to protect demand or shipment volume, raise prices, adjust pricing between storage tiers, change components or suppliers, or discontinue a model that no longer makes economic sense. These are possible strategies, not universal rules.
For example, TrendForce’s August 2026 analysis said Apple might sacrifice some gross margin to keep a forthcoming iPhone 18 lineup more affordable and preserve shipment volume; it also suggested Android vendors with less room to absorb higher costs could pass more of them on. Those were analyst expectations, not confirmed company decisions. A brand’s premium positioning and its decisions about differentiation also matter, but the sources here do not quantify how much design, brand, ecosystem, or software contributes to the price of current flagship models.

Why don’t component-cost increases map directly to retail prices?
A component increase changes one part of a wider commercial decision. A manufacturer may absorb some of it, pass some through, offset it elsewhere, or price different configurations differently. The outcome can also vary by model, competitor, market, and the company’s priorities. TrendForce’s iPhone BOM projection, for instance, is not a prediction that retail prices will rise by the same percentage: BOM and consumer price measure different things.
