A degree of freedom (DoF) is an independent way a robotic hand can move. It is not simply the number of visible joints: constraints and mechanical couplings determine which motions can vary independently. A hand can therefore have more DoF than independent actuators, and a DoF count only makes sense when tied to a particular design and its counting convention.
What does a degree of freedom mean?
In a mechanism, a degree of freedom is an independent motion available to it. In a robotic hand, the count describes motions that can vary independently of one another. For example, if a finger can bend and spread as separate motions, those are independent motions; if its joints are constrained to follow one coupled path, they do not each add an independent degree of freedom.

That is why the number of joints alone does not tell you a hand’s DoF. A 1999 report on the Gifu Hand I describes four joints but three DoF in each finger, while its thumb has four joints and four DoF. The Gifu Hand I report illustrates that joint count and independent-motion count can differ.

- Joints are the mechanical connections between parts.
- Degrees of freedom are the independent motions the mechanism permits.
- Degrees of actuation (DoA) describe the independent actuator inputs driving the mechanism.
A 2015 paper on underactuated anthropomorphic hands defines DoA as the number of independent actuators. In its terminology, DoF describes available motion and DoA describes independent inputs. The paper’s discussion of actuation strategies uses a six-DoF, six-DoA Vincent hand as an example.

When a hand has fewer independent actuators than DoF, it is underactuated. Linkages, tendons, or other transmissions can couple joints so that an actuator moves more than one joint; some joints may also move passively as the hand adapts to an object. Thus, several joints can move even when the hand has fewer motors than independent motions.
Why can two robotic hands have different DoF counts?
There is no single DoF count for all robotic hands. The number depends on the design, its mechanical constraints, and the motions included in the count. Published configurations make the distinction clear:

- UNCLE BRICK introduces a brand new building block set——Technical Robotic Hand Building Blocks Kit,This building block set contains 1622 pieces. It also includes 4 M motors and a main control system that drives them.
- This robot's fingers can freely tighten and loosen according to your control. The thumb, index finger, and middle finger can independently control the opening of the fingers, while the ring finger and little finger are connected together.
- You can control him to make various gestures. Since he's made up of 1622 blocks, he looks quite large, nearly 18 inches tall including the base, making it undoubtedly a very rewarding challenge. His palm also contains a component with a light source.
- When you complete it, it will be a piece of art worthy of your praise. You can show it to your friends how you play with it. After all, among many static building block sets, it is unique, allowing you to manipulate it at will.
- This robotic arm building block set comes in a beautiful gift box, perfect if you're considering gifting it to your son or daughter, or even a friend,Then he will be the gift you can best present. It presents a significant challenge, and Uncle Brick recommends that the child be 8 years or older to assemble this toy.
| Reported hand | Published configuration | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Linkage-driven anthropomorphic hand, 2021 | 15 DoF across 20 joints | Joint count and DoF are distinct measures. Nature Communications article |
| Gifu Hand I, 1999 | Four joints and three DoF per finger; four joints and four DoF for the thumb | Not every joint necessarily contributes a separate independent motion. Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics report |
| Vincent hand, discussed in a 2015 paper | Six DoF and six DoA | A design can have matching independent-motion and independent-actuator counts. Robotics and Autonomous Systems paper |
| Five-fingered adaptive robotic hand, 2022 | Two actuators | A design may use limited actuation for adaptive grasping and some human-like manipulation; the cited description does not give a directly comparable DoF figure. IEEE Transactions on Robotics article |
| Columbia Hand, 2011 | Three fingers with three DoF per finger, driven by two actuators | One actuator closes the fingers and the other rotates the thumb. IEEE/Columbia University paper |
These figures describe different mechanisms and configurations, not a ranking. They should not be treated as directly comparable measures of dexterity or performance.
Does a higher DoF count make a robotic hand better?
Not by itself. More independent motions can give a controller more ways to position fingers and shape a grasp, which may help with varied manipulation. But additional independently controlled motion can also mean more actuators and more control complexity.

Coupling and underactuation can reduce that burden. A hand designed for adaptive grasping may let its fingers conform around an object rather than requiring a separate command for every joint. Research on reducing anthropomorphic hand DoF examines how grasping functions can be maintained with fewer independent motions, while other designs target adaptive grasping and manipulation. These are task-specific design choices, not evidence of one universally ideal count. The 2019 study on reducing hand DoF discusses that trade-off.

- Which finger or thumb motions can be controlled independently, and which are mechanically coupled?
- How many independent actuators drive the hand, and are any joints passive?
- Is the hand intended for adaptive power grasps, pinch grasps, or in-hand manipulation?
- Does its architecture use direct drive, tendons, or linkages to transmit motion?
A DoF figure is a design specification, not a universal measure of capability. The cited literature does not establish one standard DoF count for robotic hands or a directly comparable count for the human hand. When quoting a number, name the particular hand and preserve the source’s distinction between joints, DoF, and DoA.
