What Deepfake Detection Tools Can and Can’t Tell You

Deepfake detectors estimate whether a specific file contains manipulation or synthetic-content patterns they were built and tested to recognize. They do not deliver a universal “real” or “fake” verdict. A useful interpretation combines the detector’s task, media type, processing history, threshold and error rates with provenance checks, contextual reporting and human review. A low-risk score is not proof of authenticity, and a high-risk score is not proof that every claim in the media is false.

What a deepfake detector actually analyzes

A detector is an automated analysis system, not a truth machine. It looks for signals associated with a defined class of manipulation or synthetic generation in the pixels, frames, audio or other data it receives. The answer is therefore bounded by the question the system was designed to answer.

Manipulation detection and deepfake detection are different tasks

NIST’s Open Media Forensics Challenge (OpenMFC) separates general image or video manipulation detection from image or video deepfake detection. “Manipulation” can include edits that are not generative AI, while a deepfake task may target face swaps, synthetic faces or other AI-produced changes. A tool evaluated for one task should not be assumed to answer the other.

The same distinction applies to the media type. An image model may not be suitable for video, and a video model may depend on temporal clues that do not exist in a still frame. OpenMFC describes an image-only condition based on pixel content and excluding image headers. Its video-only condition uses video pixel content and audio when present. If a service strips audio, reads metadata or samples only selected frames, its result is about those inputs—not necessarily the complete original file.

One classifier cannot answer every forensic question

A forensic examination can involve several separate questions:

  • Does a person’s identity appear to have been swapped?
  • Where in an image or video did editing occur?
  • Can the source of the file be verified?
  • Can a trustworthy provenance chain be reconstructed?
  • Does the content show a synthetic signal associated with a known generator?

A classifier may address one of these questions, partially address several, or address none reliably. A result should name the question, file and method rather than use the vague phrase “the AI says it is fake.”

How to read a detector score

Services commonly return a label such as “likely AI-generated,” “manipulated” or “no significant signal,” sometimes with a percentage. That number is usually a model score or confidence-like value, not a calibrated probability that the file is fake. Its meaning depends on the model, training data, operating threshold and the mix of genuine and manipulated material in the situation where it is used.

Thresholds create trade-offs

Raising a threshold can reduce false alarms but allow more manipulated files to pass. Lowering it can catch more suspicious files while flagging more genuine ones. A vendor’s headline accuracy without the threshold-specific false-positive and false-negative rates hides this trade-off.

NIST evaluation materials use receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC), along with measures such as correct detection at a specified false-alarm rate. AUC summarizes ranking performance across thresholds in an evaluation setup. It does not mean that an individual file has that same probability of being fake.

False positives and false negatives matter differently

  • False positive: genuine media is flagged as manipulated or synthetic. This can damage a person’s reputation, delay an investigation or wrongly reject an identity check.
  • False negative: manipulated media is accepted as low risk. This can allow fraud, impersonation or misinformation to spread.

The acceptable balance depends on the use case. A newsroom verifying a controversial clip, a platform screening uploads and a remote identity-proofing service may choose different thresholds and review procedures. The base rate also matters: when genuine files greatly outnumber fakes, even a detector with good test performance can produce many false alarms among all flagged files.

What a detector cannot establish by itself

A detector result does not independently establish who created a file, when it was made, the complete editing history, the identity of a speaker or the truth of statements shown in the media. It also cannot prove that a file is authentic merely because it returns a clean or low-risk result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conversely, a flag is evidence for further examination, not conclusive proof that the file is fake. Compression artifacts, unusual lighting, camera processing, re-encoding and unfamiliar but genuine camera pipelines can resemble manipulation signals. A detector may also identify a synthetic pattern without being able to say which person, event or claim has been fabricated.

NIST Special Publication 800-63A addresses remote identity-proofing and says automated media analysis should be tested against available forged or manipulated media and genuine media, with expected error rates documented. It explicitly states: “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” Those requirements are written for identity proofing, not as a universal rule for every consumer app, but the warning about automated errors is broadly relevant when the consequences are serious.

Why the same file can get different results

New generators and unseen manipulations

Performance is conditional on what the detector saw during development and evaluation. A model trained on one generation of face-swap software may miss artifacts from a newer generator, a different synthesis pipeline or an attack designed to remove detectable traces. NIST’s Guardians of Forensic Evidence program describes the gap between high laboratory accuracy and real-world usability and calls for testing newer generation techniques and periodically reassessing systems.

Everyday processing changes evidence

Social networks and messaging services resize, recompress and sometimes re-encode media. Screen recordings, crops, blur, low resolution and changes to frame rate can remove or alter the signals a detector relies on. NIST’s Guardians materials discuss robustness against post-processing and anti-forensics filters, including tests involving Gaussian blur, video compression and “dirty” evidence such as low-bitrate surveillance footage and social-media compression.

Software updates change the operating point

A result is tied to the version and date tested. A provider may change its model, preprocessing, threshold or supported formats without preserving the earlier behavior. NIST calls for continuous validation, regression testing after software updates and periodic reassessment against novel threats. Record the tool name, version or release date, input file and settings whenever the decision may later be challenged.

Detection, provenance and watermarking are different evidence

NIST’s 2024 AI 100-4 overview separates several approaches to synthetic-content transparency. They complement one another but answer different questions.

Approach What it can contribute Important limitation
Content detection Signals that pixels, frames or audio resemble a tested manipulation or synthetic-generation pattern. Can miss new methods and can be affected by compression, editing and threshold choices.
Authentication and provenance A record of origin, capture or subsequent edits when the record is present and trustworthy. A missing or broken record is not proof that the content was manipulated; a record must itself be validated.
Watermarking or labeling An embedded or attached indication that a participating system generated or labeled the content. Coverage depends on adoption, and marks may be removed, lost during processing or absent from legitimate synthetic media.

Use these as separate pieces of evidence. A valid provenance record can support an origin or editing-history claim that a detector cannot make. A detector can still find suspicious content when no provenance exists. Neither method alone establishes the factual truth of everything depicted.

How to assess a detector before relying on it

Compare systems under conditions that resemble the files and decisions you actually face. The following checklist prevents a single marketing number from becoming a false certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check Questions to ask
Task Is it detecting AI generation, broader editing, identity swaps, localization or provenance? Is the task for images, video, audio or a combination?
Evaluation data Which generator families and manipulation types are represented? Are genuine and manipulated samples balanced? Was the test set independent of training data?
Media condition Were files original, recompressed, resized, cropped, blurred, low-resolution or screen-recorded? Are audio and metadata included?
Performance reporting Are ROC/AUC values accompanied by threshold-specific false-positive and false-negative rates? What false-alarm rate was used?
Operational fit Who is expected to use the result, how quickly does it arrive, what formats and file sizes are accepted, and can a person inspect the evidence?
Privacy and retention What happens to uploaded files, derived biometric information and account data? Can the provider delete them, and under what policy?
Change management When was the evaluation run, what version was tested, how are model updates documented and how often is performance reassessed?

There is no universal current accuracy percentage for consumer deepfake detectors established by the NIST materials discussed here. Treat any unqualified claim such as “99% accurate” as incomplete until its data, media conditions, threshold, date and error rates are specified.

A practical workflow for checking suspicious media

  1. Preserve the original. Save the highest-quality file you can obtain, keep the original filename and hash if your process supports it, and work on a copy. Do not rely only on a screenshot or a clip downloaded from a repost.
  2. Define the question. Decide whether you need to assess AI generation, a face or voice substitution, general editing, source identity or the factual claim shown. Select a tool whose documented task matches that question.
  3. Record the media condition. Note resolution, frame rate, audio presence, visible crops, re-encoding, blur, captions and the platform from which the file came. These conditions can change detector behavior.
  4. Check provenance and context. Look for a trustworthy capture or editing record, corroborating versions from independent sources, the earliest available upload and reporting about the event. A missing provenance record should be recorded as uncertainty, not labeled proof of fakery.
  5. Run the detector and save the complete output. Keep the score, label, threshold if disclosed, model or software version, timestamp and any frame-level or region-level findings. Do not copy only the headline percentage.
  6. Seek a second method when stakes are high. A different detector, frame-by-frame inspection, audio analysis or provenance check can expose disagreement. Agreement between tools is still not a guarantee if they share training data or failure modes.
  7. Use human review for consequential decisions. Have a qualified reviewer examine the original context, visible edits, chain of custody and detector limitations. Document what remains unknown and what evidence would change the conclusion.

How to interpret NIST benchmark information

OpenMFC’s 2022 evaluation materials list more than 1,000 test images in its Image Deepfake Detection dataset and more than 100 test videos in its Video Deepfake Detection dataset. Those are dataset sizes, not claims that a detector is accurate by that percentage or that it will generalize to every internet video.

The Guardians of Forensic Evidence program, listed as ongoing and updated September 25, 2026, focuses on evaluation and validation, including representative data, post-processing robustness and transition from laboratory prototypes to usable systems. Its recommendations support asking whether a benchmark includes the “dirty” files encountered in practice and whether results were repeated after model updates.

AI 100-4, published November 20, 2024, presents synthetic-content transparency as a combination of provenance, labeling, detection and testing rather than a single universal classifier. SP 800-63A supplies operational guidance for remote identity proofing; its controls should not be presented as a consumer-app certification.

Common failure modes and the right response

What you see Likely interpretation Better next step
“Likely real” after heavy compression The input may no longer contain the signals tested by the model. Obtain the original or an earlier-generation copy and document the compression history.
Different tools disagree They may target different tasks, thresholds, generators or media features. Compare their documented scope and error rates; do not average scores into a verdict.
A high score on a genuine clip Lighting, camera processing, edits or an unfamiliar source may resemble a learned artifact. Request human review and corroborating provenance before accusing anyone of fabrication.
No provenance record The origin or edit history is unverified, not necessarily fraudulent. Seek independent source confirmation and retain the uncertainty in your report.
A vendor quotes one impressive accuracy number The figure may reflect a narrow dataset or threshold. Ask for independent test data, false-alarm rates, media conditions and evaluation date.

What to say in a report or publication

Use bounded language that identifies the evidence: “The tested system flagged this video as matching patterns associated with the manipulation types in its evaluation.” If the result is negative, write: “The system did not detect a signal under these settings,” not “the video is authentic.” Include the file condition, tool version, threshold when available, known error rates and independent corroboration. For high-impact decisions, state that a human reviewer assessed the result and list unresolved uncertainties.

This wording preserves the distinction between a measured model output and a claim about reality. It also makes the assessment reproducible when generators, compression methods and detector versions change.
