ERP should send MES the released demand and controlled context required to make a product; MES should return what actually happened. In practice, that means production orders, quantities, schedule windows, product and process references, and applicable material, equipment, or personnel requirements moving from ERP to MES. MES sends starts, status changes, operation time, good and scrap quantities, material consumption, and—when required—quality, genealogy, inventory, and traceability results back to ERP.
Use ISA-95 (IEC 62264) to establish shared concepts, then define a plant-specific contract. There is no universal field list: the right exchange is the smallest set of objects and events that lets planning, execution, inventory, quality, and reconciliation remain consistent.

Start with the ERP–MES boundary
ISA-95 places manufacturing execution and manufacturing operations management at Level 3, while enterprise resource planning, business planning, and logistics sit at Level 4. The standard is a useful boundary model, not a mandate to copy every object into both systems. Its purpose is to make the interface robust, safe, and cost-effective by giving both sides common definitions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| System role | Primary responsibility | Typical information it owns |
|---|---|---|
| ERP (Level 4) | Plan, authorize, schedule commercially, and account for production | Demand, released orders, product and supply context, planned quantities, dates, locations, and inventory or financial records |
| MES (Level 3) | Dispatch, coordinate, record, and control shop-floor execution | Work-center activity, operation events, actual quantities, material use, labor or equipment context, quality decisions, and genealogy |
Choose a system of record for each business object before mapping fields. For example, ERP may own the released order and target quantity, while MES owns operation start time and the detailed execution event. If both systems can edit the same attribute, define which update wins and how corrections are represented.

ERP-to-MES: send authorized work and enough context to execute it
The outbound message must answer a practical question for the plant: What work is authorized, for which product, where, when, and under what constraints? A B2MML production schedule, which implements ISA-95 concepts in XML, models one or more production requests together with schedule context such as start, end, location, and publication date. Use that as a modeling reference, then remove fields the plant does not need.
Released production demand
- Order identity: a globally agreed production-order or request identifier, plus any ERP revision or version.
- Product identity: the item, material, or finished-good identifier and the applicable product-definition revision.
- Target quantity: the amount to make, with a unit of measure and any conversion rule.
- Schedule: planned start and end, or a dispatch window, with the plant, site, line, or work location.
- Priority and state: the release state and dispatch priority that MES is expected to honor.
- Publication context: when the schedule was issued and which revision supersedes an earlier one.
Do not send a merely planned order as executable work unless both systems explicitly distinguish planned, firm, and released states. A clear release rule prevents MES from dispatching demand that ERP has not authorized.
Product and process context
Execution also needs the controlled instructions and constraints associated with the order. Depending on the plant, ERP-to-MES data can include:
- Product definition, formula, or specification revision.
- Bill-of-materials requirements, expected component quantities, and substitutions permitted by policy.
- Route, operation, or process-segment definitions, including sequence and effective revision.
- Expected material, equipment, and personnel requirements for each segment.
- Site, warehouse, storage, or staging locations relevant to the order.
- Effective dates, engineering-change context, and the version selected when the order was released.
ISA-95 models materials, equipment, personnel, and process segments so these relationships can be represented consistently. The exact payload is implementation-specific: a discrete plant may need route operations and work centers, while a process plant may need formula, batch, and resource constraints.
MES-to-ERP: report facts, not intentions
ERP needs execution feedback to keep production progress, inventory, and planning records current. MES should report events and actuals with the order and operation identifiers that ERP can reconcile.

| MES output | What ERP uses it for | Qualification to define |
|---|---|---|
| Order or operation start | Actual progress, capacity history, and schedule performance | Timestamp source, time zone, operation identity, and whether a restart creates a new event |
| Operation time | Actual labor, machine, or elapsed-time accounting and future planning | Whether the value is run time, queue time, labor time, or another duration |
| Produced good quantity | Production receipt, order progress, and inventory update | Unit, lot or serial context, and whether quantity is provisional or posted |
| Scrap, error, or rejected quantity | Yield, variance, disposition, and inventory adjustment | Reason code, disposition state, and whether a correction reverses the original event |
| Material consumption | Backflush, inventory deduction, variance analysis, and replenishment | Component identity, lot or serial, quantity, unit, and consumption time |
| Order end or completion status | Closeout, settlement, and release of subsequent planning work | Definition of complete, ended, closed, and technically complete |
These categories are explicit in Microsoft’s documented Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management integration processes. That documentation is a concrete product example, not a universal ERP–MES specification; verify behavior and licensing against the deployed version.
Conditional data: include it when a business process depends on it
Not every implementation should transmit every manufacturing detail. Add the following flows when ERP, quality, regulatory, service, or downstream analytics require them.
Quality and disposition
Send test results, inspection characteristics, nonconformance references, and hold, release, or reject decisions when ERP must prevent shipment, trigger a disposition workflow, or retain the quality record. Define whether MES sends raw measurements, a final disposition, or both; avoid duplicating a high-volume measurement stream that has no ERP consumer.
Genealogy and traceability
For regulated or safety-sensitive products, ERP may need the relationship between an order, finished lot or serial, consumed component lots, and the equipment or process segment used. ISA-95 covers materials, assets, equipment, personnel, and operations domains that can provide this context. Agree on the minimum genealogy needed for recall, certificate, warranty, or audit use cases.
Inventory movement and status
Transmit movements when MES performs staging, issue, return, transfer, quarantine, or completion transactions that ERP must post. A simple consumption event may be enough for one plant; another may require warehouse location, handling unit, lot status, and movement reason.

Resource and personnel context
Include equipment, tool, labor, or crew identifiers when they affect costing, compliance, maintenance history, or traceability. Do not treat every machine signal as an ERP event. High-frequency control data generally belongs in control or operations systems unless a business process needs a summarized value.

Product definitions, BOMs, routes, and resource catalogs do not have to travel in the same transaction as an order start or a quantity report. A separate API, OData service, file transfer, or other supported distribution mechanism can publish reference data, while event messages carry execution facts.
Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 example expects product-related information, BOM, and route data through data entities using file transfer or OData rather than embedding all of it in MES action messages. Whichever mechanism you choose, bind the order to the exact revision MES executed. Effective dates and engineering changes must not silently change an in-flight order.
Define the integration contract before choosing transport
REST, messaging middleware, files, and other transports can all work. Select them only after the semantic contract is clear. Compare candidate designs on support in both products, payload and extension fit, required latency, acknowledgement and replay behavior, observability, reconciliation, and version management.
Identifiers and aliases
Specify identifiers for orders, products, operations, materials, lots, serials, equipment, personnel, plants, locations, and units. If ERP and MES use different codes for the same object, maintain an explicit mapping or alias service. ISA-95 Part 7 addresses aliases and equivalent identifiers; do not rely on informal name matching.

Units, precision, and time
Define the canonical unit for every quantity and duration, conversion precision, rounding policy, time zone, daylight-saving treatment, and timestamp source. A consumed quantity in kilograms cannot be reconciled safely if one side assumes pounds or rounds at a different stage.
Lifecycle and correction semantics
Write down what planned, released, started, held, completed, ended, scrapped, and reversed mean in each system. Decide whether a correction is a compensating event, an amendment to an existing record, or a new revision. Include reason codes and the actor or system that made the change.
Acknowledgement and failure behavior
Define technical acknowledgement separately from business acceptance. A message can be received successfully but rejected because an order is unknown, a revision is obsolete, or a quantity violates a rule. Specify idempotency keys, duplicate handling, retry intervals, dead-letter or error queues, escalation ownership, and the operator action required to recover.
For sequential processes, document ordering explicitly. Microsoft describes per-order sequential processing and monitoring of failed messages in its Dynamics 365 integration. Other products may support parallel delivery, so confirm the deployed behavior rather than assuming it.

Choose an exchange cadence that matches the decision
Use event-driven delivery for facts that must update planning or inventory promptly, such as order start, completion, scrap, or consumption. Use scheduled or batch publication for large reference sets when minute-level latency is unnecessary. Keep machine-level signals, control loops, and other high-frequency telemetry in the appropriate operations or control layer unless ERP has a defined business use for an aggregate.

Define the reconciliation interval independently of transport. Even a real-time interface needs a periodic comparison of open orders, produced quantities, consumption, and errors so that a dropped or duplicated message becomes visible.
What ISA-95, IEC 62264, and B2MML contribute
ISA’s standards overview lists ANSI/ISA-95.00.01-2025 (IEC 62264-1 Modified), ANSI/ISA-95.00.02-2018, and ANSI/ISA-95.00.03-2013 among the series. The parts address different concerns: Part 2 describes conceptual interface content; Part 3 defines manufacturing-operations activity models; Part 5 covers business-to-manufacturing transactions; Part 6 addresses messaging services; Part 7 addresses aliases; and Part 8 addresses information-exchange profiles. Check the licensed edition relevant to your project before treating any detail as normative.
MESA describes B2MML as XML schemas implementing ISA-95 data models. The WBF B2MML 4.01 production-schedule document models production requests, schedule context, and material, equipment, personnel, and segment requirements. That document dates from 2008 and explains exchanged information rather than prescribing how a vendor must transact it. Treat it as a schema reference, not evidence that a current ERP or MES supports that version unchanged.

A practical implementation sequence
- Inventory business outcomes. List the decisions ERP and MES must make: dispatching, production receipt, inventory posting, quality release, genealogy, costing, or planning feedback.
- Assign ownership. For every object and attribute, name the system of record and the permitted update direction.
- Model the minimum objects. Start with order, product revision, quantity, schedule, location, material requirements, route or segments, and required resources.
- Model execution events. Add start, operation time, good quantity, scrap, consumption, and end; add quality, inventory, or genealogy only where a consumer exists.
- Resolve identity and units. Approve code mappings, aliases, units, precision, timestamps, and revision rules.
- Specify reliability. Define acknowledgements, idempotency, sequence, retries, replay, monitoring, and manual recovery.
- Test business scenarios. Include release, partial completion, hold and resume, scrap, over- or under-production, material substitution, engineering revision, duplicate delivery, reversal, and interface outage.
- Reconcile and govern change. Compare records at a defined cadence and require versioned approval for new fields, statuses, or extensions.
Common integration mistakes and their fixes
- Sending only an order number and quantity: add product revision, schedule context, location, and applicable requirements so MES can execute the intended work.
- Embedding uncontrolled BOM or route data: distribute reference data with effective dates and bind the released order to a specific revision.
- Reporting only a final quantity: include starts, operation time, scrap, consumption, and completion status when ERP needs progress or inventory accuracy.
- Treating status labels as self-explanatory: publish a state machine and map every transition, including holds, reversals, and corrections.
- Ignoring duplicates and outages: make events idempotent, retain failed messages, monitor queues, and provide replay and operator escalation.
- Forwarding every machine signal to ERP: summarize at the business cadence and keep control data in the appropriate layer.
- Assuming a standard removes local design work: use ISA-95 and B2MML for shared concepts, then validate extensions and transaction behavior with the actual products.
Minimum contract checklist
Before go-live, the interface specification should answer all of these questions:
Quick Recap
- Which released demand is executable, and how are cancellations or superseding revisions communicated?
- Which system owns each order, product, BOM, route, material, equipment, personnel, quality, and inventory record?
- What identifiers, aliases, units, precision, time zones, and effective dates are valid?
- Which events cross the boundary, in what order, and with what acknowledgement?
- How are partial quantities, scrap, holds, reversals, duplicates, and late messages handled?
- Which optional quality, genealogy, traceability, and resource fields have a defined consumer?
- How are failures monitored, replayed, reconciled, and escalated?
- How are schema changes, ISA-95 extensions, and product upgrades versioned and tested?
