Sports betting apps can collect account and identity details, payment and wagering records, device and app activity, and location data. The exact data and available privacy controls depend on the operator and your state. Location is a special case: FanDuel’s reviewed policy says location must be on to use wagering services or place bets, so disabling it may block betting. You can still review permissions, reduce optional advertising and marketing uses, and check the operator’s account privacy choices.
What information can a sportsbook app collect?
Policies differ by operator and jurisdiction. FanDuel’s policy is one concrete example, not a checklist of what every betting app collects from every user. It describes information supplied by users, information collected from devices and services, and information that may come from other sources or be shared in specified circumstances.

Account, identity, and financial details
Depending on the service and applicable requirements, an operator may request a name, contact information, date of birth, address, government identification, Social Security number, or tax and source-of-funds information. The policy example also lists financial information and commercial records such as deposits and wagering history. That does not mean every item is required for every user.

Collected technical information may include an IP address, device identifier and characteristics, operating system, browser or network information, and activity within the app or website. Policies may also describe tracking technologies, the time of activity, and the page that referred a user to the service.

Other categories in the FanDuel example
FanDuel’s California notice also enumerates geolocation, support-call audio in some circumstances, risk-related information in certain circumstances, inferences, and photos users choose to submit. These are policy-specific examples; their inclusion does not establish that every category is collected from every customer.
Why does a betting app need location?
Sportsbooks use location checks to determine whether a user is eligible to wager in a particular jurisdiction and to meet regulatory requirements. FanDuel’s policy says precise location may also support payments, analytics, location-based content and advertising, vendor location services, and legal or regulatory compliance. Its policy states: “You will not be able to use wagering services or place bets with us without location data being turned on.”
That same policy distinguishes precise device location from a general city or state estimate based on an IP address. It says IP-based location may be used to tailor services, landing pages, offers, and advertising. Whether another operator collects location continuously, only for a check, or for additional purposes must be verified in that operator’s current policy.

FanDuel describes receiving information from third parties and potentially disclosing information to vendors, service providers, marketing or advertising partners, and other parties in specified situations, including legal process and fraud or security matters. A policy’s list of possible recipients does not mean every recipient receives every data category in every case; read the conditions and purposes in the live policy.

For a broader app-privacy baseline, the FTC advises developers to explain collection and sharing clearly and to obtain affirmative consent for sensitive information such as precise geolocation. Its guidance recommends collecting only data needed, securing retained data, limiting access, and safely disposing of data no longer needed. How to limit collection and sharing
1. Review the app’s device permissions
Open your phone’s settings, find the sportsbook app, and review its access to location, camera, microphone, contacts, and notifications. Remove permissions you do not need for features you use. Disabling location can prevent wagering: FanDuel says location must be on to place bets.
If your phone offers approximate versus precise location or “while using” access, those are operating-system controls, not guarantees that the app will accept that setting for eligibility checks. The reviewed policies do not establish a universal setting path or confirm that approximate location works for betting.

Check the operator’s account settings for labels such as “Your Privacy Choices,” “Do Not Sell or Share,” data-sharing, or targeted-advertising preferences. FanDuel describes jurisdiction-dependent privacy choices and opt-outs. DraftKings says users can switch off certain non-required data disclosures in the account/profile’s Login & Security section. Controls may apply separately to an app, browser, or device. DraftKings notes that browser tracking preferences are specific to the device, website, and browser, and may be erased when the cache is cleared.
3. Turn off promotional messages
Use account communication settings or the unsubscribe link in promotional email or SMS where available. Marketing opt-outs do not necessarily stop transactional, account, or security messages.
4. Restrict browser tracking where practical
Review cookie controls and restrict or clear cookies if appropriate. Because browser choices can be device- and browser-specific, clearing site data may also remove a saved preference that you will need to set again.
5. Use privacy-request rights available to you
Where the operator and your jurisdiction provide them, you may be able to request access, correction, deletion, or an opt-out. Use the operator’s official privacy request process and complete any identity verification it requires. Rights and exemptions vary; information needed to provide the service or meet legal obligations may not be erasable on request.

How to compare sportsbook privacy policies
Before signing up, compare the policies for the specific operator and state where you will use the app. FTC guidance also recommends clear disclosure and collecting only what is needed. FTC mobile app guidance
- Which identity, contact, and financial details are required, and for what purpose?
- What location precision is used, when is location checked, and what happens if access is denied?
- Which device identifiers, usage details, and tracking technologies are described?
- What categories of vendors, advertising partners, or other parties may receive information, and under what conditions?
- What retention and deletion terms are stated?
- Where are the controls for marketing, targeted advertising, or non-required sharing?
- Which access, correction, deletion, or opt-out rights apply in your state?
Do not assume a retention period, recipient list, or opt-out effect is the same across operators. Check the current policy and settings for the app you actually use.
Why location privacy deserves extra attention
Precise location can reveal sensitive information, which is why it is worth checking both the app’s stated purpose and the device permission. A May 2026 FTC announcement about a proposed settlement involving data broker Kochava illustrates broader regulatory concern about sensitive location data. It is not evidence that sportsbook apps sold users’ location; the FTC release says the proposed order would require affirmative express consent for certain data sales or sharing and retention measures, and that a stipulated final order has force of law when approved and signed by the district court.
