Deleting a chatbot conversation usually removes it from your visible history, but it does not always erase every copy immediately. Depending on the service and features you used, the provider may also hold prompts, generated answers, uploaded files, voice or screen recordings, feedback, safety-review data, device details, and information supplied by connected apps. Training controls are separate from deletion controls.

This guide explains what consumer ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Apps documentation says as of October 2026, how to stop future model-improvement use, how to delete existing activity, and which retention windows and exceptions still apply.

What data can an AI chatbot keep?

A chatbot does not necessarily store only the words visible in a chat window. The categories below are conditional: an account produces them only when the relevant feature, setting, feedback action, or connected service is used.

Conversation prompts and generated responses

The basic record is the conversation itself: typed prompts, spoken requests, chat history, and the system’s answers. Gemini’s privacy notice says generated material can include text, code, images, video, audio, summaries, links, citations, and insights, not just plain text. A deleted transcript may therefore have associated generated content in provider systems or review processes. See Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

Uploaded and shared content

Documents, spreadsheets, photos, videos, screenshots, screen shares, browser-page content, and imported conversations can be stored or processed when a chatbot supports those functions. Chat history and file storage can have different lifecycles. OpenAI documents separate handling for ChatGPT conversations and files in its chat and file retention guidance.

Voice, video, and live-session data

Live assistants may create transcripts and retain recordings or other media from a session. Google’s notice specifically lists Gemini Live audio, video, and screens shared during Live. Whether audio or video can be used for product improvement may be controlled separately from ordinary activity history.

Feedback and safety information

A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, report, or written comment can include the conversation that prompted it. Providers also retain some inputs, outputs, or classification scores for abuse prevention, policy enforcement, and safety evaluation. Anthropic says feedback-associated data can be kept for up to five years; it also describes separate periods for flagged chats and safety scores in its retention policy and model-training policy.

Device, usage, location, and connected-service context

Privacy notices can cover interaction logs, browser and app information, device type, approximate location, language, and details supplied by connected apps. A chatbot that searches mail, calendars, cloud files, or another service may process context from that service under additional terms. Google explicitly warns that deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data retained by other Google services or connected apps.

Saved files, instructions, memories, and project data

Some products save files or instructions outside an individual conversation. A file in a library, a custom assistant’s knowledge area, or a project workspace may remain after the chat that used it is deleted. Treat these as separate records and remove them through their own management screens.

Why turning off training is not the same as deleting a chat

There are three different outcomes:

  • Visible-history deletion: removes a conversation from the account’s normal history view.
  • Future model-improvement control: tells the provider not to use new eligible conversations for training or improvement under that setting.
  • Backend and derived-data erasure: removes provider copies where policy permits, subject to safety, legal, security, reviewer, de-identification, and already-trained-model exceptions.

Changing an improvement setting does not automatically erase existing chats. Conversely, deleting a chat does not necessarily undo a training run that already began or remove information from a model that has already been trained. Anthropic states that material already in an active training run or an already-trained model may remain even after a user opts out or deletes a conversation.

Documented policies compared

The following table covers consumer ChatGPT, consumer Claude, and signed-in Gemini Apps. Business, API, school, and managed-workspace accounts can follow different administrator or contract rules.

Service History and deletion Temporary or off-history behavior Improvement, review, and file exceptions
ChatGPT Regular and archived chats remain until deleted or removed by a workspace retention policy. A deleted chat disappears from the account immediately and is scheduled for permanent system deletion within 30 days, except where data is already de-identified/disassociated or must be retained for security or legal reasons. Details: OpenAI retention guidance. Temporary Chats do not appear in history and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Saving one converts it into a regular chat. Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone turns off use of new conversations for model training; it does not delete history. Library files, custom-assistant knowledge files, and project files have separate lifecycles.
Claude Deleting a consumer conversation removes it from visible history immediately; Anthropic says backend deletion occurs within 30 days. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. If improvement is allowed, de-identified training-pipeline data may be retained for up to five years. Anthropic describes up to two years for flagged inputs/outputs, up to seven years for safety-classification scores, and up to five years for feedback-associated data. Content already in an active training run or trained model is not undone.
Gemini Apps Gemini Apps Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; users can choose three months, 36 months, or indefinite retention and can manually delete activity. Human-reviewed chats and related data can remain disconnected from the account for up to three years after activity deletion. With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google AI unless feedback is submitted. Google still retains those chats for 72 hours for responses, feedback processing, and safety. Keep Activity controls future activity use for providing, developing, and improving Google services. Feedback can be reviewed and retained for up to three years. Connected apps and other Google services have separate controls. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

How to reduce retention and delete your data

1. Identify the exact account and product

First determine whether you used a personal consumer app, a work or school workspace, an API, or a connected service. Workspace administrators can impose retention rules, and Google notes that work or school Gemini settings may be administrator-controlled. OpenAI likewise documents workspace-level differences.

2. Stop future model-improvement use

  1. ChatGPT: open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. The control affects future eligible conversations; delete existing chats separately.
  2. Claude: open Privacy Settings and disable the model-improvement option. For a single sensitive interaction, use an Incognito chat when available.
  3. Gemini personal accounts: open Gemini Apps activity controls and turn Keep Activity off. This governs future activity; it does not erase older records. Labels and availability can change, so confirm the current screen before relying on it.

3. Delete existing conversations or activity

  1. Remove individual chats from the service’s history, or use its bulk-delete control.
  2. For Gemini, review and delete entries in Gemini Apps Activity in addition to deleting visible chats.
  3. Keep the confirmation screen or email so you can identify the date and scope of the request.

4. Remove separately stored files and settings

Check file libraries, custom-assistant knowledge, project spaces, saved instructions, memories, and any exported or imported copies. In ChatGPT, deleting a conversation does not by itself delete a file stored in the Library, a custom assistant’s knowledge file, or a project file. Remove those objects through their own controls.

5. Review feedback and connected services

If you submitted a rating, report, or written comment, treat it as a separate data path. Delete or disconnect content saved by integrated mail, calendar, storage, browser, or other services according to those services’ controls. Gemini activity deletion does not erase records held by other Google services.

6. Use temporary modes with realistic expectations

Temporary or Incognito modes reduce history and, in some cases, training use, but they are not an instant zero-retention switch. ChatGPT Temporary Chats may remain for up to 30 days for safety. Gemini chats made while Keep Activity is off remain for 72 hours for response, feedback, and safety functions. Anthropic’s Incognito promise concerns model improvement, while ordinary safety and legal obligations can still apply.

ChatGPT: what to check

OpenAI’s current guidance says a deleted saved chat disappears from your account immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. Regular and archived chats remain until you delete them or a workspace policy removes them.

To stop new conversations being used to train OpenAI models, use Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone and switch it off. The setting leaves chats in history until you delete them. Temporary Chats stay out of history and can be retained for up to 30 days for safety; saving a Temporary Chat changes it into a regular chat.

After deleting a conversation, inspect the Library, custom-assistant knowledge files, and project files. OpenAI documents those as separate file lifecycles, so deleting the conversation is not a substitute for deleting each stored file.

Claude: what to check

For consumer Claude, deleting a conversation removes it from visible history immediately and Anthropic says backend storage is deleted within 30 days. The Model Improvement control in Privacy Settings governs future training use. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when model improvement is enabled.

Anthropic’s published exceptions matter when the stakes are high. If improvement is enabled, de-identified data in training pipelines may be retained for up to five years. Flagged inputs or outputs may be retained for up to two years, safety-classification scores for up to seven years, and feedback-associated data for up to five years. Opting out or deleting a chat cannot reverse a training run already in progress or remove information from an already-trained model.

Gemini Apps: what to check

Gemini Apps Activity is set to auto-delete after 18 months by default. The available choices are three months, 36 months, indefinite retention, or manual deletion. Deleting activity removes account-linked activity, but Google’s notice says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data such as language, device type, location information, or feedback can remain disconnected from the account for up to three years.

With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google AI unless you submit feedback. Google nevertheless keeps those chats for 72 hours to provide responses, process feedback, and maintain safety. Keep Activity is therefore a future-use and history setting, not a promise of immediate deletion.

Check connected-app permissions and other Google-service activity separately. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete information retained by those services.

What deletion cannot guarantee

  • Immediate disappearance everywhere: visible history can update before backend systems complete deletion.
  • Removal from safety systems: providers may retain records for abuse prevention, policy enforcement, or legal obligations.
  • Removal of reviewer copies: human-reviewed data can follow a separate retention schedule, including Gemini’s up-to-three-year period.
  • Removal from trained models: deleting a source chat cannot reliably extract information from a model that already learned from it.
  • Removal from connected services: a chatbot’s delete button may not affect mail, storage, browser, calendar, or other integrated systems.
  • Uniform rules across accounts: country, age, plan, administrator settings, and product version can change the available controls and timelines.

For sensitive material, the safest practice is to avoid entering secrets you do not need to share, use the provider’s temporary or Incognito mode where appropriate, disable future improvement use before sending the prompt, delete the conversation and associated files afterward, and verify connected-service permissions. Treat the published retention periods as policy windows, not as a guarantee that every derivative copy vanishes on the same day.
