AI chatbots can retain far more than the sentence you type. Depending on the service and features you use, collection may include prompts, uploaded files, voice or video, generated replies, feedback, device and location signals, account details, and information pulled from connected apps. Deleting a conversation usually removes it from your visible history first; permanent backend deletion can take longer and may have safety, legal, policy, or human-review exceptions.
The correct steps depend on the provider, account type, workspace rules, and enabled integrations. The instructions below cover current consumer guidance for ChatGPT, Gemini Apps, and Claude, with dates and limits stated by each provider.

What information can an AI chatbot collect?
Every service has its own notice and settings, but the data types commonly described by major chatbot providers fall into several groups. A feature you never enable may not generate that category of data, while a connected app or voice mode can add several categories at once.

Collection is not the same as model training. A provider may store a conversation to provide history or safety controls without using that conversation to improve a general model. Conversely, turning off model improvement does not erase a conversation already saved in your account.

Why deleting a chat is not always the same as erasing every copy
- Interface deletion: The conversation disappears from your history or dashboard.
- Backend deletion: The provider schedules removal from production systems, often on a stated timetable rather than instantly.
- Separate objects: Files, memories, custom-assistant knowledge, project data, and connected-service copies can have their own controls.
- Exceptions: A provider may retain limited data for safety, fraud prevention, policy enforcement, security, legal obligations, or previously completed de-identification.
- Human review: Material selected for review may follow a longer retention rule than ordinary chat history.
For that reason, record the provider and account type before you delete anything. Consumer, business, education, API, signed-out, and work or school experiences can use different terms and administrator controls.
ChatGPT: delete chats, files, and training use separately
Delete a saved or archived conversation
- Open ChatGPT and sign in to the account that owns the conversation.
- In the chat history, open the conversation’s options menu and choose Delete. Archived chats are managed separately in Settings, but archiving does not shorten retention.
- Confirm the deletion. The chat is removed from your account view immediately and cannot be restored.
OpenAI’s current chat-retention guidance, retrieved October 13, 2026, says permanent deletion from OpenAI systems is scheduled within 30 days. The stated exceptions are that the chat may already have been de-identified and disassociated, or OpenAI may need to retain it longer for security or legal obligations. Regular and archived chats otherwise remain in the account until you delete them or an applicable workspace policy removes them.
Delete files that outlive the conversation
A conversation deletion does not necessarily remove every uploaded object. Where the Library feature is available, delete the file from the Library separately. Files used as knowledge for a custom GPT remain until that GPT is deleted. Project files remain until you delete the project or file, unless a workspace policy removes them. Check each location rather than assuming one delete action covers all copies.

Stop new personal chats from improving models
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
This setting is forward-looking: it controls use of new conversations for model improvement, but it does not delete or hide saved chats. Availability can vary with sign-in status, plan, and workspace administration.

Use Temporary Chat for a new conversation
Temporary chats do not appear in chat history unless you save them, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows regular retention rules.
Understand memory and managed accounts
Memory or personalization controls are different from model-improvement controls. Turning memory off does not itself disable safety features that may use limited safety-relevant context. OpenAI states that content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces, and the API is not used to improve models by default; an organization’s retention and access rules still apply. If an administrator controls the workspace, you may need that administrator to complete deletion or export requests.
Gemini Apps: review activity and account for reviewer retention
What the signed-in Gemini notice covers
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, updated June 29, 2026, applies to the listed Gemini Apps while you are signed in. Signed-out use is covered by Google’s general Privacy Policy, and work or school accounts may have different terms. The notice lists prompts and spoken requests; shared files, videos, photos, browser content, and Live audio, video, and screen transcripts or recordings; feedback and instructions; generated content; app, browser, and device information; connected-app and other Google-service information; interaction and performance logs; device permissions and some device data; location; and subscription information.

“Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.”
That warning is especially important for prompts containing customer records, medical details, passwords, private legal material, or other information you could not disclose to a reviewer.
Delete Gemini Apps Activity
- Open Gemini Apps Activity for the signed-in Google account.
- Review the listed conversations and imported chats.
- Select individual activity or the available delete range, then confirm.
- Open the auto-delete controls and choose a period that fits your needs.
The notice describes a default auto-delete period of 18 months, with choices of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite. Manual deletion removes activity from the activity view, but it does not erase material already retained for human review. Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers, plus related data such as language, device type, location information, or feedback, may be retained for up to three years after activity deletion.
Data saved by a connected Google service follows that service’s own policy. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity therefore does not automatically delete a copy saved elsewhere, such as content created or stored in another Google service.

Claude: consumer conversation deletion
Delete from the dashboard
- Sign in to the Claude dashboard.
- Locate the conversation in your history.
- Use the conversation menu and choose the delete action, then confirm.
Anthropic’s consumer guidance covers Free and Pro examples and says the conversation is removed from conversation history immediately. It is automatically deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Anthropic also notes that other backend retention periods and exceptions can apply to enforce its Usage Policy, address terms or policy violations, or comply with law.
Do not extend this consumer-plan description to business or API products without checking their separate terms. An organization may control retention, access, and deletion for those products.
Does turning off training delete your existing chats?
No. A model-improvement switch and a deletion command answer different questions. The switch generally governs whether eligible future conversations may be used to improve models. Deletion removes a saved conversation from your account and starts whatever backend process that provider describes. On ChatGPT, turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete saved chats. Gemini’s activity controls likewise combine deletion and data-use choices but still have reviewer-retention and connected-service qualifications. Check the provider’s wording for the account you actually use.
Can a human read what you send?
Potentially, yes. Google explicitly says some Gemini data is reviewed by human reviewers and warns users not to enter confidential information they would not want a reviewer to see. OpenAI and Anthropic describe safety, security, policy, and legal processes that can create retention or access exceptions, but the exact scope depends on the product and account. A training opt-out is not a promise that no authorized person or safety system can access a message.
The safest practice is data minimization: remove names, account numbers, access tokens, medical identifiers, and proprietary text before asking for help. Do not paste a secret merely because a chatbot appears to be a private interface.
A deletion checklist that works across providers
- Identify the service and account: Confirm whether you used a consumer, work, school, business, API, or signed-out experience.
- Inventory what you shared: Include prompts, generated replies, uploads, voice or video, screenshots, custom instructions, memories, projects, and connected apps.
- Delete the conversation: Use the provider’s history or dashboard control and note when it disappears from the interface.
- Delete separate files and projects: Check libraries, custom-assistant knowledge, project storage, and any attached media.
- Review activity and auto-delete: Set the shortest useful period and remove imported or linked activity where the service offers it.
- Disconnect integrations: Remove authorization from the connected service as well as from the chatbot; each service may retain its own copy.
- Clear memories or personalization: Treat saved memories as a separate data store, not as part of chat history.
- Check workspace administration: An employer or school may retain records or restrict what an individual can delete.
- Allow for the stated window: ChatGPT and consumer Claude describe deletion within 30 days for applicable conversations; Gemini describes up to three years for certain human-reviewed material after activity deletion.
- Escalate when necessary: For a legal, regulatory, or account-level request, use the provider’s privacy or support channel and identify the account and data categories precisely.
What these time periods do—and do not—promise
The periods above are provider-stated policy windows, not independently measured guarantees for every account or region. “Within 30 days” describes a scheduled backend-deletion process, while “up to three years” describes a specific Gemini exception for human-reviewed chats and related data. Deletion can also be affected by legal holds, security investigations, policy enforcement, de-identification, organization rules, or copies held by connected services.
Before sharing sensitive material, read the current notice and the controls shown in your own account. Provider labels, product scopes, and retention terms can change, and a rule for one chatbot, plan, or country should not be assumed to apply to another.
