Before signing for a drilling software platform, require the supplier to show exactly what the product collects, where it moves and resides, who can access it, how it is protected, and how you will recover or export it. A platform that combines well planning with rig, downhole, equipment and business-system data can create operational-technology, confidentiality and continuity risks that a generic SaaS questionnaire will miss.
Use the questions below against the exact modules, deployment model, integrations, jurisdictions and contract you are considering. Product brochures illustrate possible capabilities; they do not establish what your purchased configuration collects or what security controls are enabled.

Start with a product-specific data inventory
Ask the supplier for a written inventory tied to the modules and workflows in your order. “The platform” is too broad: a planning module, real-time drilling service, mobile application and analytics add-on may process different data and use different hosting or support paths.
What data does the platform collect or create?
Require the supplier to identify data that is collected directly, received through an integration, generated by users, inferred by algorithms or retained in logs and backups. Confirm whether your configuration includes:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. - [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Well and wellbore records, trajectories, drilling programs and engineering plans.
- Formation, geological, subsurface, mudlog and drilling-report information.
- Real-time rig telemetry, downhole measurements, equipment states, alarms and control data.
- Risk registers, lessons learned, work instructions and other operational records.
- User identities, roles, device information, support-session records and audit events.
- Derived outputs such as recommendations, forecasts, benchmarks, calculated parameters or model features.
Vendor descriptions from major drilling-software providers show that these categories can coexist, but they are examples rather than a universal platform specification. Ask the supplier to mark each category as collected, optional, inferred or out of scope, and identify the retention period and business purpose for each.
Who owns the data and permitted uses?
Put ownership and license language in the contract rather than relying on a product page. Ask:
- Does the customer own uploaded records, user-generated content, derived outputs and audit history?
- May the supplier use your data to train or improve models, create industry benchmarks, or provide services to other customers?
- Are aggregated or de-identified uses allowed, and how are they defined?
- Which supplier entities, subprocessors, hosting providers and support personnel may access the data, for what purpose and from which locations?
- Can you export data in usable, documented formats with timestamps, identifiers, relationships and provenance intact?
- At termination, how quickly will the supplier return data, delete production and backup copies, and provide written confirmation?
Request a sample export from a non-production project. A promise that data is “portable” is not enough if trajectories, attachments, timestamps or relationships are lost.

Map hosting, data flows and integration boundaries
Have the supplier draw the architecture for your proposed deployment. The diagram should show rig and edge systems, customer networks, cloud services, third-party applications, support paths, backups and logging systems. For every connection, record the data direction, protocol, owner, authentication method and failure behavior.

Confirm the deployment model
| Deployment choice | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Cloud-hosted | Where are primary data, backups and security logs stored? Which regions and support locations can access them? Which cloud provider and service dependencies are material? |
| Customer-hosted or on-premises | Which party patches the application, operating system, database, containers and identity components? What support access is required? |
| Hybrid | Which records remain on customer infrastructure, which leave the site, and how are synchronization conflicts and outages handled? |
| Edge-connected or rig deployment | What runs at the rig, what is buffered during a link outage, and how is data reconciled after reconnection? |
Ask for the physical and logical locations of backups and logs, not just the primary region. Identify cross-border transfers and the support teams that can reach each environment.
Test every integration boundary
One drilling data aggregation service from SLB describes support for WITSML, WITS0, OPC-UA, MODBUS and DataScribe. Treat that list as product-specific: verify the actual interfaces, versions, permissions and configuration in your order. For each interface, ask:
- Is it inbound, outbound or bidirectional, and which system owns the credentials?
- Are service accounts unique, scoped to the minimum wells or assets, rotated automatically and disabled quickly?
- Can traffic be restricted by network segment, certificate, allow-list or private connection?
- What is logged for reads, writes, configuration changes and failed authentication?
- How can an administrator pause or revoke the connection without taking unrelated operations offline?
- What happens to drilling decisions and data integrity if the link, edge device, cloud service or third-party application is compromised or unavailable?
Evaluate identity, privilege and data protection
Identity and least privilege
Confirm whether the purchased tier supports single sign-on, multifactor authentication and role-based access. Ask for a role matrix showing who can view, edit, approve, export or delete each data class. Separate tenant, well, asset, business-unit, contractor and supplier boundaries where your operating model requires them.
- Can administrators create separate roles for configuration, security, support and data export?
- How are privileged accounts protected, reviewed and monitored?
- Can your security team approve or observe supplier support sessions?
- How quickly are leavers, contractors and compromised accounts deprovisioned?
- Can access be restricted by location, device posture, network or time?
Encryption and key control
Ask which cryptographic protections apply to your exact deployment for data in transit, databases, object storage, backups, caches and edge devices. Clarify who controls keys, how they are rotated, whether tenant keys can be separated, and what happens if a key is revoked. NIST guidance for software supporting critical executive-order systems uses a data inventory, fine-grained access control and encryption at rest and in transit as procurement prompts; use them proportionately to your own risk rather than treating the guidance as proof that every drilling platform meets a federal designation.

Logs you can actually use
Request a sample of authentication, privilege, data export, integration, configuration and administrator-support logs. Confirm the format, delivery method, search capability, clock synchronization, tamper protection and retention. CISA’s 2024 Secure by Demand guidance says SaaS providers should retain and make customer security logs available for at least six months at no additional charge. That is guidance, not a universal statutory retention period, so write the period and price into your agreement.
Probe secure development and software supply-chain risk
Vulnerability disclosure and patching
Ask for the supplier’s public vulnerability-disclosure process, severity definitions, notification channels and target times for critical fixes. Clarify whether customers receive compensating controls when an immediate patch is unsafe for a live rig, and who tests patches against your integrations. Require a record of material vulnerabilities affecting the exact product and hosting environment, including remediation status and exceptions.
Software bill of materials and dependencies
Request a current software bill of materials (SBOM) in a machine-readable format, plus the supplier’s process for finding vulnerable or unsupported components. CISA identifies an SBOM as a useful customer artifact. Ask how quickly the supplier can identify affected customers when a dependency is compromised, and whether proprietary modules, open-source packages, container images, firmware and managed cloud services are included.

Independent evidence and supplier provenance
For every assessment or attestation, obtain the scope, product version, hosting environment, test date, exceptions and remediation plan. A security badge without scope is not evidence for your configuration. Ask which subcontractors and critical service providers support delivery and how the supplier evaluates changes or compromise in those dependencies.

NIST SP 1326 frames supplier due diligence around foreign ownership, control or influence; product and component provenance; resilience; foundational cyber practices; and supply-chain tiers. Decide which dimensions matter to your threat model, national-security obligations and procurement rules, then request evidence rather than a general assurance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for incidents, outages and recovery
Incident communications
Define “incident” broadly enough to cover unauthorized access, data loss, ransomware, integrity errors, a compromised integration and an outage that affects drilling operations. Ask:
- When does the notification clock start for suspected versus confirmed events?
- Who is the named 24-hour contact, and how will updates be delivered?
- Will notices describe affected data, systems, dates, containment actions, indicators of compromise and customer actions?
- How will evidence be preserved, and what cooperation, forensic access and regulator support are included?
- Can the supplier notify your insurers, authorities or affected partners with your approval?
Backups and restoration
Request recovery objectives for data and service, the restoration order for dependencies, and the conditions under which those objectives apply. Ask how often backups are tested, whether tests include a complete tenant and configuration, how long immutable copies are retained, and whether you can review exercise results. CISA’s software-acquisition guidance specifically raises incident communications, business-continuity plans, cloud-restoration service levels, backup-restoration exercises, logging and patch processes.

Safe degraded operation
If the platform informs real-time decisions or connects to rig and edge systems, document how work continues during disconnection, corrupted data, delayed telemetry or a vendor outage. Confirm which functions can operate manually, what data is buffered locally, who authorizes a fallback, and how records are reconciled afterward. Validate this workflow with operations, safety and continuity teams; a vendor’s cloud recovery promise does not replace your site procedure.
Best Value
Make security commitments contractual
Build a responsibility matrix covering the application, cloud account, identity provider, endpoints, edge devices, integrations, network, customer configuration and data. For each layer, name the party accountable for prevention, monitoring, patching, incident response and recovery.
Contract language should address:
- Permitted data use, ownership, confidentiality and subprocessors.
- Security controls, measurable service levels, audit rights and evidence delivery.
- Incident notice, investigation cooperation, remediation and regulatory assistance.
- Restoration targets, backup testing, service credits or other remedies and escalation routes.
- Notice of material changes to hosting regions, subprocessors, dependencies or data use.
- Export formats, provenance preservation, transition assistance, retention and deletion certificates.
Ask whether security features, longer log retention, SSO, private connectivity or audit evidence are restricted to a higher tier. A control that exists only on a roadmap or in an expensive add-on is not part of your current risk posture.
Use a repeatable evaluation process
- Define scope. List modules, wells, users, data classes, integrations, regions, edge components and operational decisions in scope.
- Issue one evidence request. Require architecture diagrams, data inventory, role matrix, encryption and key details, log samples, SBOM, vulnerability policy, assessment reports, recovery tests and contract terms.
- Validate in a controlled pilot. Test SSO and deprovisioning, least-privilege roles, exports, integration shutdown, offline behavior, alerting and restoration of a representative project.
- Score evidence, not promises. Mark each answer as demonstrated, documented but untested, conditional on configuration, or unresolved. Assign higher weight to controls affecting safety, production continuity and regulated data.
- Close gaps before approval. Convert unresolved items into contractual conditions, implementation tasks, compensating controls or a documented decision to reject the configuration.
- Reassess after adoption. Review the supplier and your configuration before major upgrades, new integrations, ownership changes or material incidents. CISA treats software security as a lifecycle activity before purchase, during contracting and after adoption.
Compare two or more platforms on the same axes
| Evaluation axis | Evidence to compare |
|---|---|
| Data ownership and permitted use | Contract clauses covering uploads, derived outputs, model training, benchmarking, export and deletion. |
| Residency and subprocessors | Primary and backup regions, support locations, subprocessor list and change-notice terms. |
| Identity and privileged access | SSO, multifactor authentication, role granularity, support-session approval and deprovisioning time. |
| Encryption and keys | Coverage for transit, storage, backups and edge devices; key ownership and rotation. |
| Logs and retention | Events available, delivery format, searchability, retention period and additional fees. |
| Integrations and boundaries | Protocols, network controls, service-account scope, monitoring and emergency disablement. |
| Vulnerability and supply chain | Disclosure process, patch commitments, SBOM, dependency response and assessment scope. |
| Incident and recovery | Notice timing, cooperation, backup tests, restoration objectives and degraded-mode procedures. |
| Exit and assurance | Export fidelity, deletion evidence, transition help, audit rights and ongoing-change notices. |
Weight each axis by operational criticality, sensitivity and your legal or contractual obligations. Do not produce a universal vendor ranking: the right choice depends on your architecture, jurisdiction, risk tolerance and the evidence supplied for the selected configuration.

Before approval, identify which privacy, data-residency, breach-notification, records-retention, export-control and operational-technology rules apply to your entities, personnel, assets and data locations. Determine whether contractual notices, regulator access, cross-border transfer terms or local hosting are required. General government guidance can structure questions, but it cannot decide the legal answer for a particular buyer or country. Have counsel and security specialists review the final data flows and contract.
Red flags that should stop implementation
- The supplier cannot produce a data inventory for the modules you are buying.
- Marketing claims broad security features, but the purchased tier lacks SSO, logs, export or support-access controls.
- Data flows, support locations, subprocessors or backup regions are undisclosed.
- Integrations use shared credentials, unrestricted network paths or unlogged write access.
- There is no vulnerability-disclosure route, SBOM process or accountable patch commitment.
- Recovery objectives are verbal, backups are not restoration-tested, or no degraded operating mode exists for a connected rig workflow.
- Ownership, model-training use, deletion, incident notice or exit assistance is left to policy pages that can change unilaterally.
Resolve a red flag with evidence, configuration changes and enforceable language. If it remains unresolved and the platform is material to safe or continuous drilling operations, select a different design or supplier.
