Investing in South Korea means taking four connected risks at once: the won can change the value of your returns in your home currency; capital flows can move markets independently of trade data; Korea is unusually exposed to global trade and the semiconductor cycle; and events on the Korean Peninsula can produce abrupt, difficult-to-price volatility. A current-account surplus, strong companies or a history of market resilience does not remove those risks. The practical approach is to separate local-asset performance from currency performance, test several adverse scenarios, and match exposure with your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses.
Start with the return you will actually receive
A Korean share, bond or fund is normally priced in won (KRW). If your base currency is U.S. dollars, euros, pounds or another currency, your realized result has two components:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- the asset’s return in won; and
- the change in the won against your home currency, plus conversion costs and any hedge result.
For example, a 12% gain in a Korean asset can become a much smaller gain—or a loss—if the won falls materially during the same period. A stronger won can add to a local-currency gain or offset a local-currency loss. An unhedged investment therefore carries both security risk and foreign-exchange risk. A currency-hedged vehicle can reduce that exposure, but the hedge has a price and can produce basis differences: the hedge may not track your exact holding, maturity or cash flows.
Always label performance as either “KRW return” or “home-currency return.” They answer different questions. A historical chart in won is not a forecast of what an overseas investor will earn.

How the won is affected by dollars, rates and market plumbing
The Bank of Korea (BOK) identifies short-run spot-market supply and demand, market expectations, the global value of the U.S. dollar, and interest-rate and growth differentials as important exchange-rate influences. These forces can move together, but they do not always do so.
Spot trading is not the same as dollar funding
The spot foreign-exchange market is where currencies are bought and sold for delivery. The foreign-currency funding market includes swaps and related transactions that provide dollar liquidity to banks and investors. The BOK’s commentary on the won stresses that abundant dollar liquidity through swaps does not automatically mean abundant dollar supply in the spot market. Institutions may be able to fund positions in dollars while other investors are simultaneously demanding dollars in spot trading. That combination can leave the won under pressure even when headlines say dollar funding is available.
Global dollar moves can dominate local data
A broad rise in the U.S. dollar can weaken many currencies, including the won, regardless of Korea’s own export receipts. Investors also compare expected returns and risk across countries. If U.S. yields rise, global investors may prefer dollar assets; if Korea’s growth outlook deteriorates, they may reduce Korean exposure. These portfolio decisions can change the exchange rate before a monthly trade or current-account release arrives.

Hedging changes the exposure, not the underlying uncertainty
A forward, futures contract or hedged fund can offset some KRW movement. The result depends on hedge ratio, roll timing, interest-rate differentials, counterparty terms and the instrument’s pricing. Hedging costs can rise when interest-rate gaps widen or when market stress increases. A hedge can also underperform if your investment’s cash flows do not match the hedge’s notional amount or maturity. Treat “currency hedged” as a different risk profile, not as a guarantee of a home-currency return.
Why a current-account surplus does not guarantee a stronger won
The conventional intuition is that a country selling more abroad than it buys should receive foreign currency and see its own currency appreciate. Recent Korean data show why that relationship is not mechanical.

BOK Issue Note 2026-9, published April 17, 2026, describes a period beginning in the second quarter of 2023 in which Korea’s current-account surplus widened while the real exchange rate indicated won depreciation. The note says financial shocks associated with capital outflows and won depreciation became more frequent. It points to stronger demand for dollar assets and savings, together with structural factors such as population aging and weak domestic investment, as part of the explanation.
In practical terms, export earnings can be offset by residents, pension funds, companies or other investors purchasing overseas assets. The current account records cross-border goods, services and income; it does not tell you when every dollar is converted into won in the spot market. Exchange rates incorporate the timing and composition of financial transactions as well as trade flows.

BOK Issue Note 2026-15, published June 18, 2026, makes a related point about investment income. Korean-owned assets abroad can generate future income and foreign-currency liquidity, but the recorded income does not necessarily return as matching supply in Korea’s domestic FX market. Direct-investment earnings may be retained and reinvested in the host country instead of being converted into won.
Use the current account as one indicator of external strength, not as a one-variable forecast for the currency. Check financial-account flows, investor positioning, dollar conditions and expectations as well.
Outward investment is now a material currency-flow variable
The same June 2026 BOK note reports a sharp increase in Korean overseas portfolio investment:

| Measure | 2024 | 2025 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Korean portfolio investment abroad | USD 67.0 billion | USD 140.3 billion | More domestic savings were allocated to foreign securities, creating a potentially important source of demand for foreign currency. |
| Portfolio investment abroad as a share of GDP | 3.6% | 7.5% | The outward-flow measure became larger relative to the Korean economy. |
These are BOK figures for calendar years 2024 and 2025, reported in the 2026 issue note; they are not a live 2026 forecast. The increase does not prove that the won must fall. It does show why an investor should not infer currency direction from exports or the current account alone. The eventual income from accumulated foreign assets could support future foreign-currency receipts, while reinvestment decisions can delay conversion into won.

Market and macroeconomic risks that can reach Korean assets
The International Monetary Fund’s November 24, 2025 Article IV consultation described Korea’s risks as tilted to the downside. Its assessment is dated and should not be treated as a current forecast, but its risk channels remain useful for scenario planning.
Trade-policy uncertainty
Korea is highly integrated into global manufacturing and supply chains. Tariffs, export controls, rules of origin and retaliatory measures can reduce foreign demand, raise input costs or force companies to redesign supply chains. Even an announcement can move equities, credit spreads and the won before the final policy is known. A diversified Korean holding is still exposed to the country’s aggregate trade cycle.
Semiconductor concentration
The OECD’s OECD Economic Surveys: Korea 2026 says semiconductors represented one quarter of Korea’s export base in 2025. That concentration creates upside when global chip demand, prices and technology investment are strong, but it also makes national growth and market earnings sensitive to inventory corrections, price declines and capital-spending cuts.
The OECD identifies a semiconductor-technology breakthrough that reduces the competitiveness of Korean-made chips as a risk scenario. This is not a prediction that such a breakthrough will occur. It is a reminder to test what happens if a major export category loses market share or pricing power.

Domestic semiconductor slowdown
The IMF separately listed a slowdown in the domestic semiconductor sector among downside risks. A weaker chip cycle can affect manufacturers directly and also reduce orders for equipment suppliers, logistics firms, industrial companies and service providers. The effect on a particular security depends on its revenue geography, product mix, balance sheet and valuation.
Commodity-price volatility
Korea imports many energy and industrial commodities. A sharp rise in global commodity prices can worsen import costs, inflation and corporate margins, while a sharp fall can signal weakening global demand. The IMF included higher commodity-price volatility in its downside-risk list. Do not assume that a lower oil price is unambiguously positive: the market may interpret it as evidence of a global slowdown.
Financial-market volatility
Changes in global rates, credit conditions or risk appetite can trigger simultaneous moves in Korean equities, bonds and the won. Leverage, margin calls and crowded positions can amplify an initial shock. Short-term price behavior may therefore diverge from long-term company fundamentals. A long holding period does not prevent interim losses or forced selling if you need liquidity at the wrong time.
Growth and policy uncertainty
The IMF’s November 2025 summary projected 0.9% growth for 2025 and 1.8% for 2026. Those were projections published before the periods ended, not realized outcomes and not a current estimate for October 2026. Use them only as historical context. When making a decision now, replace old projections with the latest national accounts, central-bank guidance and company disclosures.

North Korean nuclear tests, missile launches, border incidents and leadership transitions have occurred without permanently derailing Korean markets on every occasion. The OECD’s 2026 survey notes that financial markets and capital flows have shown resilience through past tests and incidents. That history is useful context, but it is not insurance against a future shock.

The same OECD assessment warns that escalation could increase market volatility and states: “Large-scale armed conflict would have large and unpredictable negative consequences.” The IMF also lists an intensification of geopolitical tensions as a downside risk. Neither source provides a reliable probability of conflict or a predictable market reaction.
Use scenarios instead of a single forecast
- Routine tension: statements, exercises or a short-lived incident produce a temporary volatility spike, wider spreads and possible won weakness.
- Sustained escalation without open war: sanctions, shipping disruption, cyber incidents or mobilization raise risk premiums, reduce investment and pressure trade-sensitive sectors.
- Large-scale conflict: market closures, infrastructure damage, supply-chain interruption and capital controls become possible; outcomes are highly uncertain and losses could be severe.
These are planning cases, not probabilities. A portfolio that could not withstand the third case may be too concentrated in Korean assets, too leveraged or too illiquid for the investor’s circumstances.
A practical framework for comparing a Korean investment
Before choosing an exposure, assess it across the same axes. The framework below helps separate risks that are often blended together.

| Axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Currency treatment | Is the position unhedged, partially hedged or fully hedged? What are the hedge instrument, roll schedule and stated costs? | Determines how much a KRW move can change your home-currency result. |
| Market sensitivity | Does the asset track a broad market, a narrow sector, one issuer or a specific credit spread? | Concentration can magnify trade, chip-cycle or company-specific shocks. |
| Trade exposure | Where are revenues, suppliers and customers located? How dependent is earnings on tariffs or global demand? | Identifies transmission from policy and supply-chain changes. |
| Semiconductor exposure | Does the issuer sell chips, equipment, materials or services tied to chip investment? | Reveals sensitivity to prices, inventories and technology shifts. |
| Geopolitical sensitivity | Are operations, collateral or supply chains concentrated near potential disruption points? | Direct exposure can react differently from diversified international revenue. |
| Time horizon and liquidity | Could you hold through a multi-month drawdown, and can you exit if markets are stressed? | Short-term flows and spreads matter most when selling cannot be delayed. |
This is a risk-mapping tool, not a ranking of products or a recommendation. Access, eligibility, tax treatment and fees depend on your jurisdiction and provider and must be verified separately.
Due-diligence checklist before committing money
- Define your base currency. Record the return you need after KRW conversion, taxes and fees, rather than relying on a local-currency chart.
- Choose the currency policy. Decide whether unhedged exposure is intentional. If hedging, read the hedge ratio, instrument, reset frequency, counterparty and expense disclosures.
- Map revenue and supply chains. Identify exposure to U.S., Chinese and other end markets, tariffs, export controls and shipping routes.
- Test a chip-cycle shock. Consider lower semiconductor prices, weaker volumes and reduced capital expenditure, then examine earnings, debt service and valuation sensitivity.
- Test a won shock. Ask how a sudden KRW decline changes your home-currency value, imported costs and the issuer’s foreign-currency liabilities.
- Test a geopolitical shock. Plan for wider spreads, temporary market disruption and inability to trade at the displayed price. Do not assume past calm will repeat.
- Check current data. Review the latest BOK exchange-rate and flow information, central-bank policy, trade releases, IMF updates and OECD assessments. The figures cited above are dated through 2026 and can be overtaken quickly.
- Set a position limit. Size the exposure so a severe but plausible loss does not force you to sell other assets or breach your financial plan.
What to monitor after investing
- KRW exchange-rate moves against your base currency and broad U.S.-dollar conditions.
- Spot-market conditions versus reports about dollar funding and swap liquidity.
- Korean portfolio flows, resident overseas investment and foreign investor positioning.
- Current-account composition, including goods, services and investment-income entries.
- Semiconductor prices, inventories, export orders and capital-spending plans.
- Tariff, export-control and supply-chain announcements affecting major trading partners.
- North Korean tests, military incidents, sanctions and official responses.
- Liquidity, bid-ask spreads, trading hours and any restrictions imposed during stress.
Monitoring is not a promise that you can react in time. It is a way to detect when the assumptions behind your position have changed.
Bottom line
South Korea can offer exposure to globally competitive companies and a major technology-export economy, but the investment case is inseparable from currency, flow, trade, semiconductor and geopolitical risks. The won can weaken despite a current-account surplus; overseas investment can create persistent foreign-currency demand; and a market that has absorbed past security incidents may still suffer a much larger shock in a different scenario. Separate KRW performance from your home-currency result, use dated data, stress-test the risks that matter to your specific holding, and treat any allocation decision as dependent on your own horizon, liquidity needs and jurisdiction.
