Market capitalization estimates an asset’s value at a point in time; trading volume totals the reported turnover during a stated period. Neither number is a cash-flow statement, a quality score, or proof that you can buy or sell a large position at the displayed price. Market cap is usually calculated as price multiplied by estimated circulating supply. A displayed 24-hour volume is generally the value of trades reported across selected exchanges and pairs.
Those figures are useful for comparing relative size and reported activity only when you also check the provider’s supply definitions, price basis, venue and pair coverage, volume filters, and order-book conditions.

Market capitalization = reference price × estimated circulating supply

If a token’s reference price is $2 and a provider estimates that 50 million tokens are circulating, the displayed market cap is $100 million. That is the value implied by applying today’s quoted price to every counted unit. It is not a record of how much buyers have spent over the token’s entire history.

Because both inputs can change, market cap is a moving snapshot. A thin market may move from $2 to $2.20 after a relatively small trade. The implied value of all 50 million counted tokens then rises to $110 million even though only a small amount of new money may have changed hands.
Trading volume is period turnover
A displayed 24-hour volume normally adds the value of completed trades reported by selected exchanges during the previous 24 hours, converting different pairs into a common currency. It measures turnover, not net inflows. Every completed trade has a buyer and a seller, and the same coins can change hands repeatedly.
For example, if 10,000 tokens trade at $2, the reported turnover is $20,000. If those tokens are traded back and forth several times, volume can reach $100,000 without $100,000 of new capital entering the project or the token’s total ownership increasing.
What does crypto market cap mean?
Market cap is best treated as a relative-size indicator. It can help you place an asset among smaller, mid-sized, and larger markets, provided the figures use comparable inputs and timestamps. It can also help frame how sensitive a market may be to new buying or selling: a smaller market often needs less trading to move its quoted price.
It does not directly measure:
- the money invested in the project;
- the project’s technical quality, governance, adoption, or financial health;
- the amount that could be withdrawn at the displayed price; or
- the authenticity of every reported trade.
Two providers can show different market caps for the same asset because they use different reference prices, supply estimates, or update times. Compare like with like rather than treating a single number as an objective balance-sheet value.
Why circulating supply is the critical qualification
It is an estimate, not simply every existing token
“Circulating supply” attempts to represent units available in the market, but providers make judgment calls. CoinMarketCap describes reviewing token distribution, locked balances, insider or team allocations, project documentation, and other availability evidence. It distinguishes verified supply figures from numbers supplied by a project without the same verification.

Tokens held by a team, locked in a vesting contract, reserved for a foundation, or otherwise unavailable may be excluded. The exact treatment differs by provider and asset. An unlocked token is not automatically the same thing as a widely distributed, actively tradable token.

Before comparing market caps, record:
- the provider and its circulating-supply definition;
- whether the figure is verified or self-reported;
- the timestamp and reference price;
- any excluded locked, insider, or unavailable balances; and
- whether the asset has multiple contracts, wrapped versions, or redenominations that affect counting.
A supply revision can change market cap even if the quoted price does not move. Conversely, a price move can change market cap while the supply estimate remains unchanged.
Market cap versus total supply and fully diluted valuation
Total supply generally refers to units already created, while maximum supply is a stated upper limit when one exists. Neither label alone tells you how many units are freely available today.
Fully diluted valuation (FDV) applies the current price to a provider’s chosen total or maximum supply. If the current price is $2 and the eventual supply is 1 billion tokens, FDV would be $2 billion, even if only 100 million tokens currently circulate and the ordinary market cap is $200 million.
FDV is a scenario for comparing potential future dilution, not a forecast that all future tokens will enter circulation at today’s price. Unlocks, emissions, burns, demand changes, and market impact can all make that assumption unrealistic. When using FDV, identify whether the denominator is total supply or maximum supply and review the token’s issuance and unlock schedule.

Does market cap mean that much money was invested?
No. Market cap is not a cumulative investment ledger. It multiplies a current price by an estimated number of units, so a marginal trade can revalue every counted unit. If one token trades from $1 to $1.10 while 100 million units are counted, the implied market cap rises from $100 million to $110 million. The $10 million difference does not mean $10 million of new money entered; the trade that set the new price could have been much smaller.

The reverse is also true. A sale in a thin market can lower the quoted price and erase a large amount of implied capitalization without an equivalent amount of cash leaving every holder. Market cap therefore describes a price-based valuation snapshot, not investor cost basis or treasury assets.
What does 24-hour trading volume tell you?
It indicates reported activity over a defined window
Volume can show that a market has recorded substantial turnover during a particular period. It may help identify assets that are actively quoted across several venues and can provide a starting point for investigating execution conditions.
Always attach the window to the number. “$50 million in volume” is incomplete without saying whether that is a rolling 24-hour figure, a calendar-day total, or another interval, and which exchanges and pairs were included.

Volume does not count unique traders, net purchases, or the amount of money newly committed. A market can have high turnover while ownership remains concentrated, and low turnover can coexist with long-term holders who rarely trade.
Provider methodology changes the total
CoinMarketCap describes converting exchange-reported pair volume into U.S. dollars and aggregating selected markets. Its methodology excludes some no-fee or heavily incentivized pairs from its cryptoasset-volume figure because those markets are particularly vulnerable to inflated activity. It also notes that aggregate totals can double-count a pair when a cryptoasset appears on both sides of the pair.
Another provider may include different venues, use a different conversion price, apply different exclusions, or publish a raw rather than adjusted total. Those figures are not automatically interchangeable. A large difference between providers is a prompt to inspect coverage and filters, not proof that one number is correct.

Can crypto trading volume be fake?
Reported volume can be artificially inflated through wash trading: coordinated transactions in which the same participant, or related participants, effectively trade with themselves to create activity. Incentives, rebates, and zero-fee structures can make such behavior cheaper and can distort rankings based only on turnover.

A study recorded in a 2021 arXiv preprint estimated that wash trading averaged more than 70% of reported volume on the unregulated exchanges examined in that sample. That result is historical and sample-specific. It is not a current percentage for every exchange or for the crypto market as a whole.
Useful warning signs include:
- very large volume paired with almost no change in price or order-book depth;
- volume that appears suddenly and disappears when incentives end;
- extreme differences between raw and adjusted provider totals;
- identical or highly synchronized activity across related pairs; and
- an exchange that offers little information about fees, market surveillance, or its listed venues.
These signs do not prove manipulation individually. They indicate that volume should be cross-checked rather than accepted as demand.

No. Liquidity is the ability to buy or sell a chosen amount near the displayed price without moving that price substantially. Market cap does not show the distribution of holders, the depth of active orders, the bid-ask spread, or how much of the supply is actually available on the venues you can access.
Volume is closer to a liquidity clue, but still not a substitute. A market can report high turnover that is concentrated on one venue, generated by a small number of pairs, or inflated by non-economic trades. Conversely, a market with moderate reported volume may execute a normal-sized order smoothly if its order book is deep and spreads are narrow.

Metrics that address practical tradability
- Order-book depth: the amount of bids and asks available within specified percentages of the mid-market price.
- Bid-ask spread: the gap between the best available buy and sell quotes; narrower spreads usually reduce immediate trading cost.
- Slippage: the difference between the displayed price and the average execution price for your order.
- Volume consistency: whether activity persists across time instead of appearing in isolated bursts.
- Venue coverage: whether credible, accessible exchanges carry meaningful liquidity for the exact pair you need.
Check these conditions for the amount and venue relevant to you. An asset may be liquid for a $500 order and illiquid for a $500,000 order.
How to compare two assets or data services correctly
- Align market-cap inputs. Use the same price timestamp or a clearly stated time, the same currency basis, and comparable circulating-supply definitions. Note whether each supply figure is verified or self-reported.
- Separate market cap from FDV. Record the denominator used for each figure and inspect upcoming unlocks or issuance. Do not compare one asset’s circulating market cap with another’s FDV as if they were equivalent.
- Align the volume window. Compare rolling 24-hour figures with rolling 24-hour figures, not a calendar-day total with a rolling interval.
- Inspect venue and pair coverage. List the included exchanges, spot or derivative markets, and currency conversions. A spot-only number and a total including derivatives answer different questions.
- Identify raw versus adjusted treatment. Look for exclusions of no-fee, incentivized, or otherwise suspect markets. Keep the provider’s qualification beside the number.
- Test execution conditions. Examine order-book depth, spreads, and expected slippage for your actual order size. Do not infer them from market cap alone.
- Check consistency over time. A single volume snapshot can be misleading. Review whether activity is sustained and whether it appears across independent venues.

Common interpretation mistakes
“The market cap rose by $100 million, so $100 million entered.”
The increase may reflect a small trade establishing a higher price that is then applied to every counted unit. Look for actual flows separately and treat capitalization as an implied value.
“The biggest volume number is the best one.”
It may include more venues or pairs, use raw reports, or count activity that another provider filters. Read the methodology before ranking assets.
“High volume guarantees easy exits.”
Check depth and spreads at your order size. Turnover can be concentrated, temporary, or non-economic.

Availability, distribution, insider holdings, and provider verification rules can produce a different circulating estimate.
“FDV is the token’s future market cap.”
FDV is a price-and-supply scenario. New units can dilute holders, and the market price may not remain constant as supply changes.
A disciplined way to read the numbers
Use market cap to establish a size comparison, volume to describe reported turnover, and liquidity measures to judge whether a transaction is practical. Keep the definitions attached to every figure: whose price, whose supply estimate, which venues, which pairs, what interval, and what filters.
Provider methodologies and market conditions change, so review the current definitions before relying on a live ranking or quoting a number. The most defensible conclusion is usually qualified: an asset is larger or smaller on a stated market-cap basis, has more or less reported activity under a stated volume methodology, and appears more or less tradable after checking depth, spreads, consistency, and venue coverage.
