What Counts as Real-Money Trading in World of Warcraft?

In World of Warcraft, real-money trading (RMT) means exchanging money or other value outside the game for in-game gold, items, or services. Blizzard’s WoW Token is the sanctioned exception: buy one through the in-game Shop and sell it for gold through the in-game Auction House. Buying gold from an outside seller or paying cash for an in-game service is a different kind of transaction and falls under Blizzard’s commercial-use restrictions.

What counts as real-money trading?

The key question is what you give in exchange, and whether the transaction goes through Blizzard’s Token system. Cash or other outside value exchanged for game assets or services is RMT in the ordinary sense. A trade made solely with in-game currency is not automatically RMT, though separate rules can apply to the person or organization providing a service.

Transaction How to understand it
Buy a WoW Token in the in-game Shop, then list it in the in-game Auction House for gold Blizzard’s explicitly sanctioned real-money-to-gold route. See Using a WoW Token.
Pay an outside seller cash or other outside value for gold or items A third-party sale, not the WoW Token exchange. Blizzard’s End User License Agreement addresses commercial gathering and sales outside Blizzard’s platform or games.
Pay cash or other outside value for an in-game service The EULA includes providing in-game services in exchange for payment among prohibited commercial uses.
Pay another player or guild in gold for an in-game activity Not an outside-money exchange by itself. However, Blizzard’s organized-services policy restricts organizations selling certain services, including for gold.

Is the WoW Token considered RMT?

It is an exchange of real money for gold, but it is not the same as buying gold from a third-party seller: Blizzard provides the Token as an authorized, in-game mechanism. Blizzard described it as a way for players to exchange real money for gold “in a secure and sanctioned way” in its March 2, 2015 Token announcement. That is Blizzard’s description of its product and rationale, not an independent assessment of third-party services.

The reverse direction is also possible in eligible versions and regions: a Token bought for gold may be redeemed for game time or, where available, Battle.net Balance. Blizzard’s 2017 explanation of Battle.net Balance redemption is historical; consult the live support article for current mechanics.

Is buying WoW gold from a third party against the rules?

Blizzard distinguishes its Token from third-party gold sales. The EULA describes prohibited commercial activity broadly, with examples including gathering in-game currency, items, or resources for sale outside Blizzard’s platform or games. Blizzard has also cited compromised accounts, exploitative farming, scams, and disruptive advertising as concerns associated with third-party gold services. Those are Blizzard’s stated reasons; its 2015 announcement does not quantify them as independent findings.

The practical distinction is straightforward: the Token is sold and exchanged through Blizzard’s in-game systems; an outside seller taking money or other outside value for gold or items is not that sanctioned route. For the governing terms, read Blizzard’s current EULA.

Can you pay someone to boost your character?

Paying cash or other outside value for an in-game service fits the EULA’s stated category of providing in-game services in exchange for payment. Gold-paid arrangements require a separate distinction: Blizzard’s January 2022 organized in-game services policy prohibits organizations from offering boosting, matchmaking, escrow, or similar services, including for in-game gold. The announcement says individuals and guilds may use in-game tools to transact in-game items or activities for in-game currency.

That does not mean every boost paid in gold is allowed, or that every player-to-player transaction is prohibited. The policy distinguishes organized service providers from individuals and guilds, and the payment method matters. If an arrangement mixes gold with outside payment, uses an intermediary, or otherwise falls between these descriptions, the cited policy text does not settle every possible case; check Blizzard’s live terms and policy for the exact circumstances.

Does the WoW Token work in every version of the game?

No. Blizzard’s support article currently lists Tokens as available in World of Warcraft and WoW Classic Progression, and unavailable in WoW Classic Era/Hardcore and Season of Discovery. It also lists account and regional restrictions. In WoW Classic Progression, Token redemption is limited to game time rather than Battle.net Balance. Availability and rules can change, so check Blizzard’s live Token support page for your game mode, region, and account before relying on a particular feature.
