AI music generation is the use of a generative AI system to create musical audio, lyrics, or musical parts from an input such as a text prompt. It can produce a complete song, or create one element—such as a bassline—that a person combines with live performance and other production. The term describes a range of workflows, not one particular technology.
What counts as AI-generated music?
The defining feature is generative creation: the system produces musical content, rather than only adjusting or processing content a person has already made. Depending on the system, that content might be an instrumental track, a song with vocals and lyrics, or a component intended for a larger recording.

That distinction matters because the word “AI” is also used for routine production features. In its music-partner guidance, YouTube treats a prompt-generated song as generative AI use, but gives standard pitch correction on a live vocal and automated AI mastering as examples that do not count as Gen AI for its disclosure categories. Those are YouTube’s examples for its own policy, not a universal definition adopted by every organization.

At a high level, a generative system learns patterns from training data and produces an output conditioned on an input. The input may be a text description, though supported inputs and outputs vary by system.

Google DeepMind’s Lyria 3 model card documents one specific example: the model accepts text and can generate music audio and lyrics. It uses latent diffusion applied to temporal audio latents, and its audio datasets were annotated with text captions. These details describe Lyria 3; they should not be taken to mean that all music generators use diffusion, the same training data, or the same output process.
What is the difference between fully and partly AI-generated music?
The distinction is about how much of the musical work is generated, not whether a person was involved at all. YouTube’s music-partner guidance illustrates the difference with these workflows:

These labels are useful for understanding the scope of a workflow, but they are YouTube classifications—not a general legal test for authorship or a rule for every platform.
Does YouTube require disclosure?
YouTube’s cited guidance asks music partners to disclose generative AI use when delivering music content through its specified metadata methods. YouTube also says it may use other signals and may designate content as fully or partly Gen AI when partner information is missing and its systems can determine that. This describes YouTube’s policy context; it does not establish disclosure requirements for other distributors or services.

Can you copyright AI-generated music?
There is no single answer across countries, and the amount and kind of human contribution can matter. The following points describe the sources’ positions for the United States and the United Kingdom, not a worldwide rule.
United States
In a January 29, 2025 summary, the U.S. Copyright Office said generative AI output may qualify for copyright protection when a human author determines sufficient expressive elements. It identifies human-authored material perceptible in the output, as well as creative arrangements or modifications, as relevant examples. Providing prompts alone is not enough under the Office’s summary. Using AI as assistance, or including AI-generated material in a larger human-made work, does not by itself prevent that larger work from being copyrightable. None of this means that every AI-assisted song qualifies or that a user automatically owns all rights in an output.

United Kingdom
A UK government consultation distinguishes AI-assisted authorial works, recordings and other “entrepreneurial works,” and a statutory category of “computer-generated works” where there is no human author. It says a recording of AI-generated music may receive sound-recording protection regardless of the degree of human input, and describes a 50-year term for the distinct computer-generated-work category. The consultation also notes uncertainty about how originality applies to wholly machine-generated works and says the issue remains under review. This is a UK-specific account in a government consultation discussing law and policy, not a global answer.
Training and infringement are separate questions
Copyright questions can concern both the material used to train a model and the generated output. The UK consultation describes disagreement over whether and when copyrighted works may be used for training, and notes that litigation was ongoing when its text was prepared. It also says that an output containing a substantial part of a copyrighted work may infringe in the absence of a licence. An AI label alone does not settle either issue.

What the definition does—and does not—tell you
Calling music “AI-generated” identifies a kind of creation workflow. By itself, the label does not tell you what model or training data were used, how much of the music came from a person, whether the output is copyrightable, whether a particular use is licensed, or what a platform requires you to disclose. Those questions depend on the system, the human contribution, the jurisdiction, and the relevant platform rules.
