The term labels the unknown cause—or an effective description—of the universe’s observed accelerated expansion. The leading possibilities are a constant vacuum contribution (the cosmological constant), a changing field such as quintessence, and a modification of gravity on cosmic scales. Cosmic defects such as strings are also discussed, but none has been established as the answer.
The crucial distinction is between an observation and an explanation: supernovae and other measurements show that expansion is speeding up; they do not identify the physical thing responsible. As NASA puts it, “The short answer is: We don’t know.” NASA’s dark-energy overview and the European Space Agency’s Euclid explainer describe what is measured and how competing ideas can be tested.

What is actually observed?
Galaxies are, on average, receding from one another as space expands. Measurements of Type Ia supernovae provide both a distance estimate (from their apparent brightness) and a recession estimate (from their redshift). Comparing those quantities across different eras shows that expansion has not continued at a constant rate: it is accelerating. Subsequent observations of the cosmic microwave background, galaxy clustering and other phenomena support the same broad cosmological picture.

That result is not a direct detection of a new substance. “Dark energy” is the name given to the unknown cause, or to whatever effective component in a cosmological model produces the acceleration. It might be a physical field, a property of empty space, a defect left from the early universe, or a sign that the gravitational equations need changing. Calling it energy does not settle which of those descriptions is correct.

Current cosmological fits assign roughly 68% of the universe’s matter-energy density to dark energy. ESA presents 68% based on Planck mission estimates, while NASA gives an approximate range of 68.3–70%. These are model-dependent inferences about the cosmic energy budget, not measurements of a container holding a known substance. Neither cited page attaches a publication year to those percentages, so they should not be treated as a dated measurement or as proof that the cause has been identified.
Dark energy is also not dark matter. Dark matter behaves as an attractive gravitating component that helps assemble galaxies and cosmic structure. Dark energy is the name for the component associated with accelerated expansion. Their similar adjective reflects our incomplete knowledge, not a known common substance.
The leading explanations at a glance

|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmological constant (vacuum energy) | A constant energy density associated with the vacuum; its effect is the same throughout space and does not evolve with time in the standard model. | It is the simplest working hypothesis, but the expected vacuum-energy scale and the observed value are radically discrepant—the cosmological constant problem. | Whether the reconstructed expansion history remains consistent with a constant contribution and whether structure growth follows general relativity with that constant. |
| Quintessence or other dynamic dark energy | A hypothetical field or component whose value can change through time and, in some models, from place to place. | It predicts evolution rather than a fixed density, yet no field has been detected as the cause. | Searches for departures from the constant case in expansion history, together with the field’s predicted effect on structure growth. |
| Modified gravity | The apparent acceleration comes from extending or changing general relativity on the largest scales, rather than adding a separate dark-energy substance. | The modified theory must reproduce the many observations that ordinary general relativity already explains while matching the acceleration. | Joint tests of expansion, the growth rate of structure and other gravity-sensitive observables. |
| Cosmic defects, including strings | Hypothetical structures formed during early-universe phase transitions could influence cosmic evolution. | They remain speculative in NASA’s overview; the cited material reports no detection and does not rank them above the other proposals. | The cited sources do not specify a sufficiently detailed discriminating test to prescribe one here. |
1. The cosmological constant: the simplest fit
What the idea means
In the standard account, the cosmological constant, written as Λ, is a uniform contribution built into Einstein’s equations. It can be described as vacuum energy: even completely empty space has a fixed energy density. Because that density does not dilute as the universe expands, its relative importance increases as matter becomes more spread out. At late times, its gravitational effect produces accelerated expansion.

This is the dark-energy component in the widely used ΛCDM model: Λ for the cosmological constant and CDM for cold dark matter. “Constant” is the key prediction. At a given scale, its density should not drift with cosmic time or vary across ordinary regions of space.
Why physicists are not satisfied
The model fits a wide range of observations with relatively few parameters, but it does not explain why the vacuum should have the particular, extremely small energy density inferred from cosmology. Quantum-field calculations count contributions from fluctuating fields and produce a vastly larger expectation. NASA’s Physics of the Cosmos program says that quantum physics over-predicts the observed amount by a factor of 10120; the page does not provide a publication year for that figure. NASA also states that “There is currently no theory based on known physics that can quantitatively explain dark energy.” NASA’s program page presents this as an unresolved theoretical problem, not as evidence for a different specific model.

How it could be challenged
A constant contribution predicts a particular relationship between distance, redshift and cosmic time. It also predicts how quickly matter clumps under general relativity. A model can therefore be tested in two separate but linked ways: reconstruct the expansion history and measure the growth of galaxies, clusters and other structure. A constant can fit one set while failing the other, especially if an apparent acceleration is really modified gravity.
2. Quintessence and other evolving fields
What changes compared with Λ
Quintessence replaces the fixed vacuum term with a dynamical field. Its energy density and pressure can evolve, so the acceleration could have been weaker or stronger at different epochs. Some versions also allow spatial variation. The field is hypothetical: no observation has established that a quintessence particle or field exists.
This distinction matters because a changing component leaves a different expansion history from a constant one. Cosmologists often describe the difference through the field’s effective equation-of-state parameter, commonly written w. A cosmological constant has w exactly equal to −1. A dynamical model generally predicts a value that differs from −1 or changes with time. Measuring that behavior is not the same as detecting the field directly; it is an attempt to determine whether the data require evolution.
What would count as evidence?
Researchers compare supernova distances, baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), the cosmic microwave background and other distance indicators to reconstruct how the expansion rate changed. A statistically robust, repeatable departure from the Λ prediction could favor a dynamic component. But expansion alone is not enough: different fields can mimic similar histories, and an apparent deviation might instead arise from a change in gravity, calibration systematics or an incompatible combination of data sets.
The strongest comparison also checks structure growth. A field that changes the expansion rate alters how matter collapses, while its interactions can add further effects. A successful quintessence model therefore has to fit both the background expansion and the distribution and motion of matter.

3. Modified gravity: changing the rules instead of adding a substance
The central proposal
General relativity has passed tests in the Solar System, in binary pulsars and in many cosmological applications. Modified-gravity proposals keep it as an approximation where it works but add terms or new fields that become important over enormous distances or late cosmic times. Under this interpretation, there is no separate dark-energy fluid driving acceleration; the gravitational response itself changes.
Some theories can be rewritten mathematically to look like general relativity plus an effective dark-energy component. That bookkeeping similarity does not make the theories physically equivalent. In one case the extra component is treated as a real field or vacuum term; in the other, the altered gravitational law changes how matter and light respond to one another.
The necessary consistency checks
A modified theory must explain more than accelerated expansion. It must preserve the successful predictions of general relativity, avoid unstable or superluminal behavior where the theory forbids it, and match observations of light bending, galaxy motions, clusters and the cosmic microwave background. The key cosmological discriminator is the relationship between expansion and growth.
Two models can produce nearly the same distance-redshift curve while predicting different rates at which small density fluctuations grow into galaxies and clusters. Measuring galaxy clustering, weak gravitational lensing and related signals tests that relationship. ESA says the Euclid mission is designed to map galaxy distributions and measure structure growth, providing a test of general relativity over very large distances and long periods. See the ESA explanation of Euclid and the dark universe.
4. Cosmic defects and other speculative possibilities
Early-universe phase transitions could, in some theories, leave extended defects such as cosmic strings. A network of such defects might affect spacetime, produce distinctive gravitational signals or alter cosmic evolution. NASA includes cosmic defects among hypothetical possibilities, but the cited overview does not report a detection or identify them as the leading explanation.

Because the proposal is less developed as an explanation of the observed acceleration than Λ, dynamic fields or modified gravity, it should be treated as a possibility rather than a competing established model. The sources cited here do not give a specific observational test detailed enough to summarize beyond the general requirement that any defect scenario fit expansion, structure and other cosmological data simultaneously.
How scientists compare the proposals
Expansion history
Distance and redshift measurements trace how the scale of the universe changed. Type Ia supernovae act as calibrated standardizable candles; BAO provide a characteristic length scale imprinted in matter by early-universe sound waves; the cosmic microwave background anchors conditions at much earlier times. Combining these observations tests whether the late-time history follows the constant-Λ curve or needs an evolving component.
Growth of structure
Galaxies and clusters did not appear instantly. Their abundance, clustering and gravitational lensing reveal how density fluctuations grew. This is complementary information: expansion describes the background geometry, while growth tests how gravity operates within that geometry. A model that fits distances but predicts the wrong growth rate is not a complete explanation.
Consistency across probes
Claims of new physics become credible only when they survive independent data sets, alternative calibrations and different model choices. A preference can weaken when a supernova compilation, a CMB likelihood or a nuisance parameter is changed. Conversely, a persistent pattern across probes can motivate a more decisive experiment without yet identifying the underlying physics.
What the 2025 DESI-related result actually says
A paper by Gen Ye, Matteo Martinelli, Bin Hu and Alessandra Silvestri, published in Physical Review Letters on 8 May 2025, analyzed DESI baryon acoustic oscillation measurements together with cosmic microwave background and Type Ia supernova information. Its abstract reports an inconsistency between BAO and CMB within standard ΛCDM and says the analysis indicates a preference for dynamical dark energy. In a broad Horndeski-gravity framework, the authors interpret the result as a hint of nonminimal coupling. The paper is titled “Hints of Nonminimally Coupled Gravity in DESI 2024 Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Measurements.” Read the paper’s abstract at Physical Review Letters.

That wording sets the appropriate evidential level. It is a model-dependent interpretation of particular combinations of data, not proof that dark energy changes with time and not a confirmation of modified gravity. “Hints” means the result merits scrutiny through additional measurements, alternate analyses and improved control of systematic uncertainties. It does not overturn the fact that no explanation has yet been established.
What would resolve the question?
A convincing answer would need more than a single parameter preference. Scientists would look for a reproducible signal that distinguishes a constant from an evolving component or altered gravity across independent observations. Useful requirements include:
- A measured expansion history that departs from the constant-Λ prediction by an amount that remains significant under reasonable changes in calibration and data selection.
- A matching prediction for structure growth, weak lensing and galaxy clustering, rather than an expansion-only fit.
- A theoretical model that is mathematically stable, quantitatively predictive and compatible with laboratory, Solar System and gravitational-wave constraints.
- Agreement among independent surveys and epochs, so the result cannot be explained by one instrument, supernova sample or analysis convention.
- A physical mechanism that explains the measured scale without simply replacing one unexplained parameter with another.
Future and ongoing surveys are valuable because they map both sides of the problem. Galaxy positions and shapes test growth; supernovae and BAO test distances; the CMB supplies an early-universe anchor. No single observation can identify dark energy by itself.

The cosmological constant is the simplest explanation that currently works in the standard cosmological model, but its tiny observed value is theoretically unexplained. Quintessence offers a changing field that could leave time-dependent signatures. Modified gravity attributes the apparent acceleration to new large-scale gravitational behavior and is tested especially well by comparing expansion with structure growth. Cosmic defects remain a more speculative possibility.
For now, the scientifically accurate conclusion is limited but clear: accelerated expansion is observed; its physical cause is not. The percentages assigned to dark energy describe a successful model’s inferred energy budget, not an identified substance. The 2025 DESI analysis may point toward evolving dark energy or nonminimal gravity in particular frameworks, but it is a hint to test—not a final verdict.
