A Motley Fool article published October 2, 2026, lays out two hypothetical price paths: about $275,000 per bitcoin if it compounds at 34% annually for four years, and $400,000 if it grows at roughly 47% annually. Those are scenarios, not promises—and a Bitcoin price target alone cannot establish the future value of a $500 investment.
What the $275,000 and $400,000 figures mean
The figures come from Dominic Basulto’s October 2, 2026, article, “Here’s What a $500 Investment in Bitcoin Could Be Worth by 2030”. The article attributes the $400,000 end-of-2030 outlook to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. It then calculates an approximately $275,000 bitcoin price under an assumed 34% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over four years, and says a roughly 47% CAGR would be needed to reach $400,000.
CAGR is a smoothed rate: it describes the constant annual rate that would connect a starting price to an ending price. It does not mean the asset rises by that percentage each year. Bitcoin can move sharply in either direction, so a smooth compound-growth calculation is a way to illustrate assumptions, not a forecast of the path.
| Scenario in the article | Assumption | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately $275,000 per bitcoin | 34% annual compound growth for four years, using the historical decade-long CAGR stated in the October 2, 2026 article | A calculation based on repeating that past rate; the article does not provide the underlying price series for the rate. |
| $400,000 per bitcoin by the end of 2030 | Approximately 47% annual compound growth, as calculated by the article | A more aggressive growth scenario associated with the price outlook the article attributes to Brian Armstrong. |
Neither endpoint is the projected value of $500. To calculate an investment’s value, you would also need the bitcoin price when it is bought, the amount of bitcoin purchased, the price when it is sold, and any fees or taxes that apply. The article’s scenarios do not establish those inputs or guarantee a return.

Why the article sees institutional adoption as a possible catalyst
The article argues that wider participation by financial firms could support demand. It points to institutional products, hedging tools, and portfolio allocations as signs of possible adoption. These are proposed reasons the higher-growth scenario could occur, not proof that it will.
It also reports that Bitcoin ETF flows shifted from a $5.8 billion deficit to an $800 million surplus. The article’s extracted text does not identify the original data publisher or the measurement period for those figures. Treat them as figures reported by the article, not as independently verified current flow data; ETF flows can change, and the figures should be checked against primary fund-flow data before being relied on.

What to make of the regulatory argument
The article says the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act had faded as an expected catalyst for institutional adoption and suggests SEC and CFTC rule-making could fill the resulting regulatory void. That is the article’s characterization, not a verified statement of the bill’s current status or the agencies’ latest actions. Legislative progress and agency rules can change; consult current official records before making decisions based on this point.
What the outlook does—and does not—tell a $500 investor
A price target is not a suitability assessment. Whether Bitcoin belongs in someone’s portfolio depends on factors such as their time horizon, ability to withstand losses, existing investments, and need for access to the money. The article’s “worth a closer look” conclusion is its author’s opinion, not individualized financial advice.
