Keep the written licence or permission for every track, with its exact scope, proof of payment if applicable, and written confirmation that the rights holder has allowlisted your YouTube channel in Content ID. Also save the livestream URL, date and track timestamps, plus any YouTube warning, claim, dispute and resolution. A licence documents the permission you obtained; it does not guarantee that YouTube will not interrupt the stream or issue a claim.
What to save for each track
Create a dated record for every piece of music used. Keep an unchanged original and a backup. A dated folder in local or cloud storage is enough; no special storage product is needed.

- Identify the music: save the track title, artist or composer, version or recording, and catalogue or asset ID if there is one.
- Keep the written grant: retain the signed licence, permission email or other written grant, including the licensor’s legal name and its stated authority to grant the rights.
- Preserve the full terms: save the rights granted, permitted uses, territory, term, channel or account, monetization terms, required attribution, editing limits, audience restrictions, exclusions and revocation conditions.
- Keep payment evidence: retain the invoice, receipt and proof of payment if the permission was paid.
- Save the allowlist record: keep your request to the rights holder and its written confirmation that the correct channel ID is allowlisted in Content ID.
- Match the permission to the broadcast: record the stream URL, date and time, and approximate timestamps when the music plays.
- Preserve changing online terms: save screenshots or exports of licence-dashboard terms as they appeared when you acquired the track, together with renewal notices or later changes. Check the current terms before reusing it.
- Keep platform correspondence: save any live warning, Content ID notice, archive claim, dispute submission and final resolution.
Check that the licence covers the actual use
A licence for a recording is not necessarily permission for every right involved in using a song. YouTube distinguishes the master recording from the underlying composition; different parties may control or administer them. A label may control a recording, while composers, publishers or collecting societies may handle composition rights. Confirm what the licensor controls and can authorize rather than assuming one permission covers both layers. YouTube explains music rights and copyright.
Ask for a grant that expressly matches your planned use. In particular, check that it covers:
#1 Best Overall
- Live transmission on YouTube, including any relevant public-performance or communication rights.
- The archived livestream or replay (VOD), if you intend to leave it available.
- Monetization, if enabled, and the channel or account that will broadcast.
- The territories and licence period, including any renewal requirement.
- Looping, edits, attribution, promotional clips or other uses you plan to make.
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to hold necessary rights for Live Content, including music licensing rights. The terms also address archived content. A licence should therefore match both the live use and any replay you plan to retain.
Why the recording and composition are separate checks
YouTube describes “master use” rights as typically held by the record label that recorded a song. The recording contains an underlying musical work, and public-performance and other composition rights may be handled by different parties. Collecting societies may offer catalogue-wide licences in some contexts, but that does not establish that a particular licence covers your track, territory, platform, livestream and archive use. Check the repertoire and the written grant.
Rank #2
The Copyright Office of India’s handbook gives an example in which playing a sound recording in public may involve a licence for public performance of the musical work and a separate licence for the sound recording, depending on the society’s repertoire. This is a reason to check both layers, not a determination of every creator’s online obligations. See the Copyright Office handbook.
What YouTube may do during and after the stream
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may show a placeholder image and warn you to stop; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. YouTube advises licensed creators to ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that allowlist, a licensed stream can still be interrupted, including a stream restricted to certain territories. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

If you archive the stream, YouTube says Content ID claims may be made after the stream ends. A live broadcast that was not interrupted is not proof that its replay is cleared. Keep the replay within the licence scope and retain any later claim and resolution correspondence.
Music sources: what the permission does and does not establish
Original music
Music you control can simplify third-party permission checks, but collaborators and performers may hold rights or have agreement terms of their own. Keep written agreements that establish who controls the relevant recording and composition rights and what uses are permitted.
Library music and YouTube Audio Library
Check the licence for the specific library track and the use you intend. YouTube identifies its Audio Library as a recommended source of safe music, but keep the applicable track terms. A “free” label, attribution or description alone does not establish permission for a livestream and replay or prevent a Content ID issue.

Do not treat Creator Music as livestream clearance: YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says it does not support live content. Its usage details also limit applicable tracks to eligible long-form videos and impose regional and track-specific conditions; they do not turn those tracks into livestream permission. See Creator Music usage details.

India-specific legal scope
The Copyright Act, 1957 defines “communication to the public” broadly; section 51 addresses infringement involving the exercise of exclusive rights without a licence or contrary to licence conditions. The Act also permits owners or authorized agents to grant licences in writing. These provisions make the written grant and its conditions important, but they do not settle whether every Indian creator needs an additional Indian public-performance or broadcast licence for every online livestream. That can depend on the rights, repertoire, licence, territory, stream circumstances and applicable arrangements. For a high-stakes use or an active dispute, consult an India-qualified copyright lawyer. The Act is available from the Copyright Office of India.
Compare permissions before using a track
| Check | What to establish in writing |
|---|---|
| Rights scope | Whether the grant covers the sound recording/master, composition and any relevant performer rights. |
| Use scope | Live transmission, archived replay, monetization, territories, term, channel and any promotional extracts. |
| Platform handling | Whether the rights holder can and will allowlist your channel in Content ID, and how it handles claims. |
| Evidence quality | Whether the parties, track or version, rights, limits and licence period are identified in a retained written record. |
| Cost and reuse | Whether the permission covers one stream or repeated use, and what fees or renewal conditions apply. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the livestream uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo does not supply music rights or guarantee that a stream will avoid copyright checks, warnings or claims; keep the licence and allowlist evidence described above.
