You need Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers to play Nintendo Switch Sports. Depending on the sport and number of players, the game uses a single Joy-Con, a paired set, or a Joy-Con fitted into the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible.
The game must be played outside handheld mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode on a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2. The Leg Strap is optional for most activities but required for some Soccer gameplay. The name “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort” is a common wording error; Nintendo’s official title is Nintendo Switch Sports.

The official game name and the short answer
Nintendo calls the game Nintendo Switch Sports, not Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. If you searched for “Resort,” you are almost certainly looking for the same motion-controlled sports game.

Nintendo’s support information lists three broad arrangements: paired Joy-Con controllers, a single Joy-Con controller, and a Joy-Con used with the Leg Strap. Which arrangement appears depends on the sport and the way you are playing. There is no single controller count that applies to every activity, solo session, or local multiplayer group.
#1 Best Overall
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Nintendo’s support FAQ is explicit that the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller does not work with this game. It is not a substitute for Joy-Con, even if it is already paired with your console.
Controller compatibility at a glance
| Controller or setup | Works? | What it is used for |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Joy-Con pair | Yes | Supported sports and player arrangements that call for paired Joy-Con. |
| One Nintendo Switch Joy-Con | Yes, where the selected sport supports it | Activities whose on-screen instructions specify a single controller. |
| Nintendo Switch Joy-Con plus Leg Strap | Yes | Some Soccer gameplay; the left Joy-Con is placed in the strap. |
| Joy-Con 2 | Yes for the game, with a limitation | Joy-Con 2 can be used with Nintendo Switch Sports, but it does not fit the Leg Strap. |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | No | Not supported by Nintendo Switch Sports. |
| Built-in controls in handheld mode | No | Nintendo states that the game does not support Handheld Mode. |
“Pair” in this context means the game has asked for a paired Joy-Con arrangement; it does not mean every sport uses the same number of physical controllers per player. Read the controller prompt for the sport you select before buying additional units.
Why the required controller changes by sport
Nintendo Switch Sports is built around motion input rather than ordinary button controls. The game therefore selects a controller arrangement that matches each activity. A sport may ask for one Joy-Con, while another may ask for paired Joy-Con. The setup can also change when you move from solo play to local multiplayer.
Sports that use one Joy-Con
When the sport’s instructions call for a single Joy-Con, each participant should use the arrangement shown on screen. Do not assume that a second controller improves the experience; a single-controller activity may be designed around the motion and buttons on one unit.
Sports that use paired Joy-Con
Other activities require paired Joy-Con. If your game displays that requirement, have the necessary Joy-Con available before starting the match. A paired setup may be assigned differently for solo and multiplayer sessions, so use the player-join instructions in the game rather than applying a universal “one pair per person” rule.
Soccer and the Leg Strap
Nintendo says the Leg Strap is required for some Soccer gameplay. In that setup, a left Nintendo Switch Joy-Con is fitted into the strap so the game can read the leg movement. The strap is not a general requirement for Nintendo Switch Sports and is not needed simply to launch the game or play every other sport.
Joy-Con, Joy-Con 2 and the Leg Strap limitation
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers are the safest choice if you plan to use the Leg Strap. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can be connected wirelessly to Nintendo Switch 2 and used with the strap.

Joy-Con 2 controllers are supported by Nintendo Switch Sports, but their physical design does not fit the Leg Strap. You can use Joy-Con 2 for sports that do not require the strap; choose original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con for Soccer gameplay that does.
This distinction matters when you own a Nintendo Switch 2. The console can use either generation for the game, but the accessory requirement determines which controller generation you need. If your planned session includes strap-based Soccer, keep at least one compatible original left Joy-Con available.
Console and play-mode requirements
Nintendo’s support FAQ states: “Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode.” That means attaching Joy-Con to a console and holding the system as a handheld is not a supported way to play.
Nintendo recommends TV Mode on these systems:
- Nintendo Switch
- Nintendo Switch OLED Model
- Nintendo Switch 2
In TV Mode, the console is connected to a television and the Joy-Con are used as detached motion controllers. The recommendation is about play mode as well as hardware: a compatible controller alone does not make handheld play supported.
Nintendo’s FAQ discusses Nintendo Switch Lite, but the TV Mode recommendation specifically names the full-size Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model and Nintendo Switch 2. Because Switch Lite is not included in that recommended list, do not assume that it provides the same supported setup when planning a purchase or a group event. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for your exact console before relying on it.

- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy 2 player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
How to set up a session
- Use a supported TV setup. Place the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model or Nintendo Switch 2 in its dock and connect the dock to the television. Nintendo Switch Sports is not a Handheld Mode title.
- Prepare compatible Joy-Con. Use original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or supported Joy-Con 2. Do not substitute a Pro Controller.
- Connect the controllers. Pair or reconnect the Joy-Con with the console, then detach them for motion play. If a controller is being shared between consoles, follow the console’s on-screen pairing prompt before launching the game.
- Choose the sport and read its controller prompt. The selected activity will indicate whether it expects one Joy-Con or paired Joy-Con. Make that assignment before adding local players.
- Add players one at a time. Have each participant connect the arrangement requested by the game. Controller needs can increase with local multiplayer, and Nintendo notes that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer.
- Attach the Leg Strap only when the sport calls for it. For supported Soccer gameplay, place a left original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con into the strap and follow the strap’s fitting instructions before starting.
If the game changes sports, pause and check the new controller instruction rather than carrying the previous arrangement forward. A controller that was correct for one activity may not be the required setup for the next.
Planning controllers for solo and multiplayer play
The number of Joy-Con to buy depends on three variables: the sport, the number of players, and whether any player is using the Leg Strap. Nintendo’s official information does not establish one universal number for the entire game.
| Your plan | What to have ready | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Trying the game alone | The Joy-Con arrangement shown for the chosen sport | Some activities use one Joy-Con; others require paired Joy-Con. |
| Several people sharing one console | Enough supported Joy-Con for the sport’s player prompt | Local multiplayer requirements vary, and Nintendo warns that additional accessories may be needed. |
| Soccer with strap-based gameplay | A left original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and the Leg Strap | Joy-Con 2 does not fit the strap. |
| Using only a Pro Controller | No supported setup | The Pro Controller is incompatible with Nintendo Switch Sports. |
| Playing with the console held as a handheld | No supported setup | Handheld Mode is not supported. |
For a party, select the sport first and check its player-join screen. That approach prevents buying a second pair when the activity needs a different arrangement, or discovering that a strap-compatible left Joy-Con is missing on the day.

The Leg Strap is a sport-specific accessory, not a mandatory part of the Nintendo Switch Sports package for every activity. Nintendo’s product information identifies it as required for some Soccer gameplay. Its instructions describe fitting a left Joy-Con into the strap.
Use the correct controller generation
Use an original Nintendo Switch left Joy-Con for strap play. Joy-Con 2 works with the game generally, but it cannot be inserted into the Leg Strap. On Nintendo Switch 2, original Switch Joy-Con can be connected wirelessly for this purpose.
Check the fit before starting
Place the left Joy-Con in the strap’s controller pocket and secure the strap according to Nintendo’s fitting instructions. Confirm that the controller is held firmly before beginning movement-based play. If the game does not detect the expected setup, remove and reconnect the Joy-Con and repeat the on-screen controller check.

Troubleshooting common controller problems
The Pro Controller is connected but the game ignores it
This is expected behavior, not a pairing fault. Nintendo Switch Sports does not support the Pro Controller. Switch to the Joy-Con arrangement requested by the sport.
The game says the mode is unavailable in handheld play
Move the console to TV Mode and detach the Joy-Con. Nintendo explicitly excludes Handheld Mode, so changing button settings or reconnecting the same handheld controls will not solve this limitation.
Soccer does not recognize the strap
Verify that the controller in the strap is a left original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con. A Joy-Con 2 cannot fit the accessory. Reconnect the controller, reseat it in the strap and follow the game’s setup prompt again.
There are not enough controllers for everyone
Return to the selected sport’s player screen and count the arrangement it requests. Because Nintendo uses both single- and paired-Joy-Con setups, the correct number depends on that specific activity and player configuration. Nintendo also notes that multiplayer may require additional accessories.
What to buy if you are starting from zero
For the broadest compatibility, start with a pair of original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con. They cover the game’s listed single- and paired-controller arrangements and can be used with the Leg Strap when Soccer requires it. If you already own Joy-Con 2, they remain useful for supported sports, but they do not replace an original left Joy-Con for strap-based play.
Recommended Free Tools
Buy the Leg Strap only if Soccer gameplay that uses it is part of your plan. Do not purchase a Pro Controller expecting it to operate Nintendo Switch Sports; Nintendo lists that controller as incompatible.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each player type
- Solo player: Use the Joy-Con arrangement displayed for the sport you select.
- Local multiplayer group: Check the sport’s player setup first; controller and accessory needs vary.
- Soccer player using the strap: Use a left original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con with the Leg Strap.
- Nintendo Switch 2 owner: Joy-Con 2 works for the game generally, while original Switch Joy-Con remains necessary for Leg Strap use.
- Pro Controller owner: You need Joy-Con instead; the Pro Controller is not compatible.
- Handheld player: Switch to a supported TV Mode setup, because Handheld Mode is not supported.
