World of Warcraft’s modern Free Trial, also called the Starter Edition, lets a new or existing Battle.net account play for free up to level 20. You can create modern-WoW characters, complete level-20 quests, run level-20 dungeons and use the Random Dungeon Finder, but progression stops at 20 and many social, trading and account features remain disabled. A WoW subscription or game time is required for content beyond that point. The trial applies to modern World of Warcraft, not WoW Classic.
What the free trial is in 2026
The Starter Edition is a permanent access tier defined by a level and feature limit, not a ten-day or other timed promotion. Blizzard’s current guidance allows players to use a new or existing Battle.net account even when it has no active subscription or game time. You can therefore return to the game after a long break, create a trial character, or test modern WoW before paying.

The word “modern” matters. The free trial covers the current retail version of World of Warcraft. It does not provide access to WoW Classic game modes. Classic characters, progression systems and servers are separate from the Starter Edition rules described here.

How far can a free-trial character progress?
The level cap is 20
Every Starter Edition character can gain experience until level 20. Level 20 is the hard progression boundary: you cannot level that character to 21 without upgrading the account with a WoW subscription or game time. The cap applies per character, so making another trial character does not raise the limit for the first one.

Blizzard describes all playable content available through level 20 as free, including level-20 dungeons and quests. You can continue exploring and completing eligible activities at the cap, but experience earned after reaching level 20 cannot advance the character until the account is upgraded.
Starting zone and the first destination
Fresh characters begin in Exile’s Reach, the modern introductory zone. Its tutorial teaches the basic combat, equipment and quest systems before sending the character into the wider game. After Exile’s Reach, the game directs trial players toward Dragonflight content. The exact route or quest presentation can change with patches, but the account’s level-20 ceiling remains the important restriction.
Gold allowance
A Starter Edition character can hold up to 1,000 gold. Blizzard’s current Starter Edition support guidance states this as a per-character limit, so each trial character has its own ceiling. The allowance is not a starting gift or a one-time promotional credit; it is the maximum amount that character may accumulate while the account remains in the trial tier.
What you can do without paying
Questing and dungeons through level 20
Trial players can complete the quests and other playable content available to level-20 characters. Level-20 dungeons are included, rather than being reserved exclusively for subscribers. This gives a new player a practical sample of solo questing, group combat, dungeon roles and the game’s basic equipment loop.
The Random Dungeon Finder is available in the Starter Edition. You can use the queue to find eligible dungeon groups instead of manually assembling a full party. Dungeon availability is determined by the character’s level and the current game rules; content intended for higher-level characters is outside the trial’s progression range.

Basic communication
Two general communication channels remain available: /say and /party. There is an additional visibility rule for /say: characters ten or more levels higher than the trial character will not see that character’s /say messages. This can make conversations with high-level players unreliable even when both characters are nearby.
You may whisper World of Warcraft friends added by character name. RealID friends are not available to Starter accounts, so a trial character cannot use the broader Battle.net identity and messaging system reserved for upgraded accounts.
Trying the game’s core loop
The free tier is sufficient to evaluate the fundamentals: create a character, learn a class, follow introductory quests, earn equipment, reach level 20, communicate in limited channels and queue for level-20 dungeons. It is not designed to reproduce the full social economy or endgame experience. Features that depend on unrestricted account communication, player trading or guild membership are deliberately excluded.
Which features are locked in the Starter Edition?
The restrictions affect progression, content, communication, social organization and the in-game economy. The following table separates the major limits from the corresponding paid-account capability.

Recent-expansion zones and allied characters
Starter accounts do not have access to most content from the most recent expansion, including its quests and zones. Allied characters are also unavailable. This prevents the trial from being used as a route into the newest expansion’s races and story areas before the required purchase or account upgrade.

Chat, whispers and emotes
Besides the allowed /say and /party channels, most other chat channels are blocked. Trial characters cannot whisper people who are not WoW friends, and text-chat emotes are disabled. Voice communication inside WoW is also unavailable. These restrictions mean that a trial player may be able to queue for a dungeon but still lack the communication tools a regular guild or organized group expects.
Guilds and party formation
Guild-related functions are disabled, and Starter accounts cannot form parties in the normal way. Random Dungeon Finder remains the exception because the automated queue creates the group. If you want to assemble a custom group with friends, a subscription or game time is needed.
Trading and account services
Trial characters cannot trade with other players, send or receive mail, use the Auction House or use value-added services. The Warband Bank is also read-only from the trial’s perspective: depositing and withdrawing are both blocked. These rules isolate the trial character from the player-driven economy and from account services that can move items or characters between game systems.
Pet battles
Pet battles are not available to Starter accounts. Collecting pets may be possible through ordinary quest rewards or other encounters, but the dedicated battle feature itself remains locked until the account is upgraded.
What changes when you subscribe or add game time?
Upgrading with a WoW subscription or game time removes the Starter Edition boundary. Blizzard’s current wording says that content beyond level 20 and up to level 80 becomes available, including higher-level dungeons, raids and social features such as guilds, unrestricted in-game chat and the Auction House.

The upgrade is an account-level change, so the trial character can continue instead of being discarded. Its level, equipment and quest progress remain on the account, while the previously blocked systems become available according to the character’s level and the game’s current rules.
Subscription content is not the same as the newest expansion
Blizzard’s modes guide separates the subscription boundary from the newest-expansion purchase. As recorded in the current guide, The War Within became part of the subscription on January 20, 2026. Midnight still requires a separate purchase. Therefore, paying for game time does not automatically mean that every current expansion is included.
This distinction matters when planning a return. A subscription can unlock the modern game and its subscription-covered level range, while a separate expansion purchase may be necessary for the newest zones, quests, races or level cap. Expansion availability can change, so check the current account and modes information before buying.

Use the trial when you want to test fundamentals
- You are deciding whether the combat, classes and introductory questing suit you.
- You want to reach level 20 and try the level-20 dungeon queue without an upfront game purchase.
- You are returning to modern WoW and need to confirm that your Battle.net account and installation work.
- You mainly want a short, self-contained sample and do not need guilds, trading or the Auction House.
Plan to upgrade when you need these functions
- Progression past level 20 or access to higher-level dungeons and raids.
- Guild membership, custom party formation or unrestricted communication.
- Mail, player-to-player trading, the Auction House or Warband Bank transfers.
- Pet battles, WoW voice chat, text-chat emotes or other account services.
- Most current-expansion zones, quests and allied characters.
Common misconceptions and troubleshooting
“The free trial lasts ten days”
The current Starter Edition is not described as a ten-day offer. Its principal boundaries are level 20, the 1,000-gold per-character ceiling and the listed feature restrictions. You can remain within those limits rather than racing a countdown timer.

It does not. The Starter Edition is for modern retail WoW. Classic modes follow their own access rules and should not be used as evidence that a trial character is missing content.
“I cannot see a friend’s message”
Check which channel and account type are involved. Trial characters have /say and /party, but a character at least ten levels higher will not see the trial character’s /say messages. Whispers are limited to WoW friends added by character name; RealID and whispers to non-friends are unavailable.
“The dungeon queue works, but I cannot invite someone”
That behavior is expected under Starter Edition rules. Random Dungeon Finder is permitted, while normal party formation is restricted. Use the automated queue for eligible level-20 content or upgrade the account for custom groups.
“I reached level 20 and stopped gaining levels”
Level 20 is the trial’s progression cap, not a broken experience bar. Upgrade with a WoW subscription or game time to continue beyond it. If you are aiming for the newest expansion, also verify whether that expansion is included in the subscription or requires a separate purchase.
Bottom line for a prospective player
The free trial is a genuine playable slice of modern World of Warcraft: Exile’s Reach, introductory questing, level-20 quests and dungeons, Random Dungeon Finder and limited communication are all available at no cost. It becomes unsuitable when you need advancement beyond level 20, current-expansion zones, guilds, custom parties, unrestricted chat or any player economy feature. Start free to test the game’s core loop; add game time or a subscription when one of those specific limits—not a supposed trial timer—blocks what you want to do.
