You need a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S to play Grand Theft Auto VI at launch, based on Rockstar Games’ currently announced platforms. Rockstar’s official materials list PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a current release date of November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s GTA VI page also labels PlayStation 5 “Plays Best,” although that wording is not a published frame-rate or resolution comparison.
PC is not listed among the announced platforms in the Rockstar sources checked on October 13, 2026. That means there is no official PC release date or PC system-requirements list to use yet—not that a PC version has been ruled out permanently.

The short answer: PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar Games currently supports two console families for GTA VI:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X
- Xbox Series S
Rockstar’s customer-support page says GTA VI can be pre-ordered for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the official game page shows the same platform list. You can verify the live listing on Rockstar’s platforms, editions and versions page and the official GTA VI page.

If you already own one of those consoles, it is the relevant hardware path. If you own a PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or a gaming PC, the currently announced platform information does not list those devices for GTA VI.

| PC | Not listed in the official platform sources reviewed | No announced PC availability or release date in those materials. |
The table reflects Rockstar’s platform announcements, not independent testing. Rockstar has not published GTA VI-specific resolution, frame-rate, storage, or comparative performance figures in the cited material.
What “Plays Best on PlayStation 5” means
The official GTA VI page uses the phrase “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” That is Rockstar’s own positioning, so it is fair to say that Rockstar highlights PS5 as its preferred platform. It is not evidence of a measured advantage over Xbox Series X, and it does not mean Xbox owners are using an unsupported version.
Recommended Free Tools
Rockstar has not supplied a GTA VI benchmark showing different resolutions, frame rates, loading times, graphical settings, or visual features between PS5 and Xbox consoles. Do not substitute specifications from GTA V, another Rockstar game, or a different title. Those comparisons would not establish how GTA VI performs.
Rockstar also released an extended-look video in August 2026 that was captured entirely on PlayStation 5. The footage demonstrates what Rockstar chose to show, but recording a trailer on PS5 does not prove that the Xbox versions run worse or have different technical features. The announcement repeats the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms and the November 19 date; it is available in Rockstar’s extended-look announcement.
Which PS5 model is required?
The cited Rockstar information identifies the PS5 platform but does not specify a required console revision, storage capacity, disc drive, or special edition. Therefore, there is no sourced basis for saying that you need a particular PS5 model, a premium bundle, or an accessory. Check the product description and Rockstar’s support information when buying, because model availability and packaging can change before launch.
Xbox Series X versus Xbox Series S
Both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are covered by Rockstar’s “Xbox Series X|S” listing. If you own either model, Rockstar’s current announcement treats it as a supported platform.

It also does not state that one model is required for a particular mode. You should not infer GTA VI behavior from the consoles’ general specifications or from how another game performs.
Can you play GTA 6 on Xbox Series S?
Yes. Xbox Series S is explicitly included in Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S platform listing. That is an official compatibility statement, not a promise about a particular visual setting or frame rate. Rockstar has not published those GTA VI details in the sources currently available.
Should an existing Xbox owner upgrade?
Nothing in Rockstar’s platform announcement says that an Xbox Series S owner must upgrade to Series X, or that an existing Series X owner needs a newer revision. If you already have a supported Series console, the announced information does not establish a hardware upgrade requirement. Wait for official technical details rather than treating speculation as a requirement.

What about a PC version?
PC is not listed on Rockstar’s current GTA VI page or its platform-support page. As a result, Rockstar has not announced PC availability, a PC launch date, or system requirements in the materials checked.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThis is narrower than saying “GTA VI will never come to PC.” Rockstar’s current listings simply do not announce a PC version. Until Rockstar publishes a PC platform entry, any claimed CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, operating-system, launcher, or release-window requirement is speculation and should not guide a purchase.
How to interpret PC listings and rumors
Online stores, videos, social posts, and unofficial databases may display PC information before an official announcement. Treat those entries as unverified unless Rockstar adds PC to its own platform materials. A rumored date is not an announced date, and GTA V’s historical release pattern cannot establish GTA VI’s schedule.
If PC is your only gaming platform, the practical answer today is that there is no officially announced PC version to buy or configure. You can monitor Rockstar’s official GTA VI page and support page for a platform change.
Release date and what is included
Rockstar’s current listed release date is November 19, 2026. The date appears on the official GTA VI page and in newer Rockstar announcements, but release schedules can change. Rockstar’s November 2025 announcement stated, “Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026.” You can read that announcement at Rockstar Newswire. Recheck the official page close to launch rather than relying on an old listing.
In its June 2026 pre-order announcement, Rockstar described GTA VI as a single-player experience coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The announcement is available at Rockstar Newswire.
Standard and Ultimate editions
Rockstar’s support page lists Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition. It says the Standard Edition includes the game. For the physical version, Rockstar says the package contains a download code usable for a digital download. That detail means “physical” packaging does not necessarily mean the game is supplied on a playable disc; check the exact retailer listing and regional packaging before purchase.
The cited sources do not establish prices for either edition, regional taxes, subscription requirements, storage size, or a mandatory accessory. Those details should be confirmed on the store page for your region when Rockstar and retailers publish them.
How to choose between the announced consoles
Because Rockstar has not published a technical comparison, the most defensible choice depends on your situation rather than an invented performance ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you already own a supported console
Keep using your PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S unless Rockstar later announces a model-specific limitation. Buying a second console solely because of unverified claims about GTA VI performance is not supported by the current evidence.

If you are buying your first console for GTA VI
Use three practical filters:
- Rockstar’s stated positioning: PS5 is the only platform Rockstar labels “Plays Best.” Treat that as a preference signal, not a benchmark.
- Your existing ecosystem: Choose the platform where you already own games, use a familiar account, and keep the accessories you actually need.
- Official compatibility: Xbox Series X and Series S are equally present in Rockstar’s announced platform family. Do not let unverified claims imply that Series S is excluded.
There is no official GTA VI-specific price comparison in the cited sources, so a cost recommendation would depend on current regional retail prices and bundles rather than on Rockstar’s platform announcement.
If you are deciding between PS5 and Xbox
Both are announced, supported choices. PS5 has Rockstar’s “Plays Best” label; Xbox Series X|S has explicit platform support. The sources do not provide enough information to say that one has a higher resolution, steadier frame rate, faster loading, or better graphics. Make the decision on ecosystem and current ownership unless Rockstar publishes measured specifications.

The confirmed requirement is a supported console: PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. The available announcements do not name a required television, headset, controller accessory, storage expansion, subscription, or internet plan. Do not buy those items on the assumption that GTA VI requires them.
Before launch, use this verification checklist:
- Confirm that the store listing identifies the game for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- Check Rockstar’s official platform page for changes to supported devices.
- Read whether the edition is digital or physical and, for physical packaging, whether it uses a download code.
- Verify the release date and edition details again near November 19, 2026.
- Ignore PC system-requirement claims until Rockstar publishes an official PC listing.
These checks protect you from buying an older-generation version, mistaking a rumor for a platform announcement, or assuming that a package includes a disc when Rockstar describes a download code.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing GTA V support with GTA VI support
GTA V has appeared on several generations of hardware, but its history does not announce GTA VI platforms. Use only the GTA VI platform listings when deciding what to buy.
Turning “Plays Best” into a technical test result
Rockstar’s wording is useful for identifying its highlighted platform. It is not a published measurement. Avoid quoting it as proof of a specific frame rate or resolution advantage.
Assuming PS5 footage excludes Xbox
The extended-look footage was captured on PS5, while Rockstar still lists Xbox Series X|S as supported. Capture hardware and supported retail platforms are separate facts.

A PC version is unannounced in the reviewed official materials. That is all the evidence establishes. It does not confirm, cancel, or rule out a later PC release.
Bottom line for each reader
- Have a PS5? You have an officially announced GTA VI platform, and Rockstar calls PS5 “Plays Best.”
- Have an Xbox Series X? You have an officially announced platform.
- Have an Xbox Series S? You also have an officially announced platform.
- Have a PC only? Rockstar has not announced PC availability or requirements in the current official materials.
- Have an older console? PS4 and Xbox One are not included in the announced GTA VI platform list.
For the latest platform and date information, rely on Rockstar’s official GTA VI page and its support listing, especially as November 19, 2026 approaches.
