Rockstar currently lists GTA VI for those two console families, while Activision lists Modern Warfare 4 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. That leaves PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as the only confirmed single-console choices.
Neither game’s cited platform information supports using a PS4 or Xbox One for this pair. A PC or Nintendo Switch 2 can run Modern Warfare 4, but Rockstar has not listed GTA VI for either platform in its current support information.

The one-console answer
If you want one machine that covers both releases, choose one of these:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
The “Series X|S” wording matters: Rockstar’s current GTA VI support listing covers both Xbox Series models, not only the higher-end Series X. Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 announcement also includes both models.

Platform compatibility at a glance
| Platform | GTA VI | Modern Warfare 4 | One platform for both? |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PC | Not listed by Rockstar in its current platform statement | Yes | No confirmed solution |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Not listed by Rockstar | Yes | No |
| PlayStation 4 | Not listed | No | No |
| Xbox One | Not listed | No | No |
“Not listed” is not the same as a confirmed cancellation or permanent exclusion. It means the cited official platform information does not currently announce that version. For a purchase decision, treat PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as the only confirmed options for both games.
What Rockstar currently confirms for GTA VI
Supported consoles
Rockstar’s support page, updated August 18, 2026, says: “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” That is the current official console list used for this answer.

Release date
Rockstar’s regional code information gives GTA VI a launch date of November 19, 2026. The date is a publisher-announced schedule and can change, so check Rockstar’s support information again when you place an order.
Physical editions and pre-loading
The physical version is described as containing a download code rather than a game disc. Rockstar says pre-loading is supported from November 12, 2026. A physical box therefore does not necessarily mean you can install the game entirely from included media; keep the code and make sure the console can download the software before launch.
The cited Rockstar statement does not list a PC edition, Nintendo Switch 2 edition, PS4 edition or Xbox One edition. It also does not provide storage requirements, frame-rate targets or resolution specifications. Do not buy a console based on an assumed performance number that Rockstar has not published.
What Activision confirms for Modern Warfare 4
Supported platforms
In its May 28, 2026 announcement, Activision says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement explicitly says it “will not be available on PlayStation 4 or XBOX One.”
Release date
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026. That launch comes before GTA VI’s November 19 date, so someone buying a shared console can play Modern Warfare 4 first and then install GTA VI when it becomes available.

PC-specific features
Activision describes current-generation-console and PC development with PC performance optimizations, upscaling and frame-generation options, plus expanded graphics controls. Those features make PC a valid Modern Warfare 4 platform, but they do not create a one-device solution for GTA VI because Rockstar’s current GTA VI platform statement does not include PC.
Choosing between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Both console families satisfy the confirmed compatibility requirement. The better choice depends on your existing library, controller preference, storage and disc needs, and the subscription costs available in your region.
Choose PS5 when its features and ecosystem fit you
Sony says GTA VI “will play best on PS5” through features including DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the console’s high-speed SSD. This is Sony’s platform-holder positioning, not an independent frame-rate or resolution test. It does indicate that Rockstar and Sony are presenting PS5-specific immersion features as part of the GTA VI experience.

PS5 is also the straightforward choice if you already own PlayStation games, accessories or an account-based library. Check whether the model you buy includes a disc drive if you intend to use boxed games; the GTA VI physical package is described as a download code, so the package format alone does not guarantee a disc-based installation.
Choose Xbox Series X|S when Xbox is your established platform
Both Xbox Series X and Series S are included in Rockstar’s GTA VI listing and Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 listing. Existing Xbox purchases, friends and controller familiarity can therefore outweigh differences in hardware design.
Before buying, decide whether you need a disc drive. The Series X and Series S have different hardware configurations, and the cited announcements do not provide a GTA VI resolution, frame-rate or feature comparison between them. Do not assume that one model will deliver a particular performance level unless Microsoft or Rockstar publishes that specification.
Compare the practical ownership factors
| Decision factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Current game library | Which account already owns the games and add-ons you use? |
| Friends and multiplayer ecosystem | Which platform do the people you play with use? |
| Controller preference | Do you prefer DualSense features or the Xbox controller layout? |
| Disc-drive requirement | Will you buy or play other disc-based games, or are downloads sufficient? |
| Storage | Check the final install sizes and available internal storage when publishers post them; no sizes are stated in the cited information. |
| Subscription cost | Compare the current online-multiplayer and catalog plans in your country before purchase. |
| Local price and availability | Console prices, bundles and stock vary by region and date; verify them at the time of purchase. |
Why PS4 and Xbox One are not safe choices
Modern Warfare 4’s announcement explicitly excludes both PS4 and Xbox One. Even if a future GTA VI announcement added an older-console version, those machines would still fail the requirement of running both games because Modern Warfare 4 is not coming to them according to Activision’s cited statement.

What PC buyers need to know
PC is confirmed for Modern Warfare 4, with graphics controls and options such as upscaling and frame generation. However, Rockstar’s current GTA VI support statement names only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not provided a PC launch date in the cited information.
That means a PC purchase can be justified for Modern Warfare 4 or other PC games, but it cannot currently be recommended as the machine for both titles. Avoid treating rumors, retailer listings or an assumed later port as a confirmed GTA VI requirement. Reassess the decision only after Rockstar publishes an official PC platform announcement.
What Nintendo Switch 2 owners need to know
Activision lists Nintendo Switch 2 as a Modern Warfare 4 platform. Rockstar does not list Switch 2 for GTA VI in the cited support information, so Switch 2 is a Modern Warfare 4-only option for now.
If GTA VI is the reason you are buying hardware, Switch 2 does not meet the confirmed requirement. It would take a separate official Rockstar announcement to change that conclusion.
Buying and installation checklist
- Select PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. These are the only two console families currently listed for both games.
- Check the exact model and included accessories. Confirm whether the console has the disc-drive arrangement you want and whether the bundle includes the controller and cables you need.
- Verify regional store support. Launch dates, preorder terms, taxes, currency and subscription pricing can differ by country.
- Plan for digital installation. Rockstar describes the GTA VI physical package as a download code. Ensure you can redeem codes in the account region where you intend to play.
- Check storage before launch. The cited announcements do not state install sizes. Leave adequate free space and follow the final publisher requirements when they are posted.
- Install GTA VI during the stated pre-load window. Rockstar lists November 12, 2026 as the start of pre-loading, ahead of the November 19 launch.
- Install Modern Warfare 4 for its earlier launch. Activision lists October 23, 2026. Confirm the final download and any launch-day update in your console’s store.
Release timeline and what could change
| Date or status | What it means |
|---|---|
| October 23, 2026 | Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. |
| November 12, 2026 | Rockstar says GTA VI pre-loading begins for the listed console versions. |
| November 19, 2026 | GTA VI is scheduled to launch according to Rockstar’s regional code information. |
| Current platform status | Rockstar’s cited GTA VI list contains PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; no PC or Switch 2 version is confirmed there. |
Platform lists, preorder details, dates, prices and retailer stock are volatile. Recheck the latest Rockstar and Call of Duty announcements before paying, especially if your purchase depends on a PC version, a specific bundle or a regional release condition.
Bottom line for different buyers
You want the simplest answer
Buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Either is a confirmed platform for both games.
You already own a PS5 or Xbox Series console
You do not need a new console for compatibility. Check the game’s store listing, available storage and your region’s purchase requirements when each release approaches.
You are deciding between a console and PC
Choose the console if playing both GTA VI and Modern Warfare 4 is the priority. PC is confirmed only for Modern Warfare 4 in the cited announcements, and Rockstar has not announced a GTA VI PC date there.
You are considering Switch 2
Switch 2 covers Modern Warfare 4 but not the confirmed GTA VI requirement. It is not the one-console answer.
