Cold, very dry, or oxygen-poor burial conditions can slow some pathways of microbial decay, but no single environment guarantees preservation. Temperature controls reaction speed; moisture can either support microbes or restrict them when soil is desiccated or fully saturated; oxygen limitation suppresses aerobic metabolism without stopping anaerobic decay. Soil pH, porosity, water movement, microbial community, burial history, and the bone’s own condition determine the outcome together.
Bone preservation also involves non-microbial chemistry. Acidic water can leach mineral, while redox conditions and flowing groundwater redistribute dissolved substances. A buried skeleton may therefore retain its shape while losing mineral, collagen, or other organic components at different rates.

The main conditions that slow decay
Burial slows microbial decomposition when the environment restricts microbial growth, enzyme activity, oxygen transfer, or the chemical reactions that break down bone. The most important controls are temperature, moisture, oxygen and redox state, pH, porosity and drainage, microbial ecology, and the bone’s intrinsic properties.
Recommended Free Tools
| Environmental control | How it can slow decay | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Low temperature | Slows microbial metabolism and chemical reaction rates | The effect depends on duration and the organisms present; a laboratory temperature response is not a universal field multiplier |
| Severe dryness | Limits microbial growth and enzyme activity | Dryness must be substantial enough to restrict available water |
| Water saturation | Reduces gas diffusion and can suppress aerobic metabolism | Waterlogged soil may still support anaerobic microbes and chemical alteration |
| Low oxygen | Restricts aerobic decomposition pathways | Anaerobic communities can continue to break down organic material |
| Higher pH in some settings | May reduce mineral dissolution compared with acidic conditions | Actual preservation depends on the complete soil chemistry and water movement |
| Low porosity or restricted water movement | Can limit aeration and transport of reactants | Porosity also controls drainage, so its effect is site-specific |
These controls interact rather than acting as independent switches. Moisture changes oxygen diffusion, temperature changes microbial activity, and water movement can alter pH and carry dissolved compounds through the burial.

Why cold burial generally preserves bone longer
Temperature is a major control on decomposition because both microbial metabolism and many chemical reactions accelerate as conditions warm within a biologically active range. Cooler ground therefore tends to retard oxidation and other decay processes. The effect is strongest when cold conditions persist for long periods rather than occurring as brief seasonal dips.
A controlled respirometry study of bone samples reported an average increase of about fourfold in oxidation rate for a 10 °C temperature increase. That figure describes the study’s laboratory measurements; it is not a universal rule that every buried bone decays four times faster whenever soil warms by 10 °C. Soil texture, water availability, oxygen status, microbial community, and bone condition can all change the response.
In Arctic contexts, the number of thawing degree days—the accumulated warmth available for biological activity—was among the site variables most strongly associated with preservation. A site with a short thaw season can therefore behave differently from a site at the same average latitude that experiences longer, warmer summers.

Moisture has a two-sided effect. Microbes and enzymes need water, so a soil that is too dry can restrict growth and biochemical reactions. At the other extreme, saturated soil has very low gas diffusivity. Oxygen moves far more slowly through water-filled pores than through air-filled pores, which can suppress aerobic metabolism.
Very dry soil
Severe dryness can preserve organic components by removing the water required for microbial growth and enzymatic reactions. The relevant condition is not simply “dry to the touch,” but a sustained lack of available water in the pores surrounding the bone. A bone can also experience changing conditions if seasonal rain or groundwater periodically rehydrates the soil.

Intermediate moisture
Moderately moist, aerated soil often provides the combination microbes need: water for metabolism and enough connected air space for oxygen transfer. Under those conditions, aerobic decomposition can be more active than in either a truly desiccated or fully saturated burial.
Saturated or waterlogged soil
Saturation can slow aerobic decay by blocking oxygen diffusion. It does not sterilize the burial. Anaerobic microorganisms may use other chemical pathways, and dissolved substances can continue to move through groundwater. Saturated soils can therefore slow one component of decay while promoting another form of alteration.
A 2019 decomposition review described a study in which decomposition was slower in both dry and saturated soils under the tested conditions. That result should be treated as conditional evidence, not a universal ranking of dry versus waterlogged graves. In one Arctic investigation, moisture showed little explanatory power across sampled pits, probably because none was dry enough to restrict microbes or wet enough to create strongly anoxic conditions.
What oxygen limitation and redox conditions change
Buried soil commonly becomes oxygen-limited as microbes consume available oxygen and as diffusion through pores slows. This can reduce aerobic oxidation and favor microorganisms adapted to low-oxygen or oxygen-free conditions. The correct conclusion is “a different microbial regime,” not “no decay.”
Redox conditions also affect minerals and dissolved compounds. As oxygen is depleted, chemical forms of iron, sulfur, and other elements can change, influencing mineral transformations around the bone. Water saturation, organic matter, and drainage determine how quickly those redox changes develop and whether they persist.

Because oxygen consumption is only one measurement, it cannot capture every pathway. Anaerobic microbial activity and acid-driven mineral leaching may continue even when a test records little oxygen use. This is why an apparently low oxidation rate should not be read as a complete measure of preservation.
How soil pH, porosity, and chemistry affect bone
Soil pH
Acidic conditions can promote dissolution and leaching of the mineral fraction of bone. Water moving through acidic soil may remove ions from the hydroxyapatite structure, leaving a more porous and chemically altered skeleton. A bone can therefore look intact while losing substantial mineral content.
pH also shapes microbial communities and controls which chemical reactions are favorable. The effect is not a simple “acid equals fast microbial decay” rule: acidity may inhibit some organisms while simultaneously damaging mineral. Preservation assessments must distinguish microbial loss of organics from chemical loss of mineral.
Porosity and drainage
Porosity determines how easily air and water move through soil. Open, connected pores can supply oxygen and transport dissolved compounds, potentially supporting aerobic activity and leaching. Tight or poorly connected pores can restrict gas exchange, but they may also hold water and create localized anoxia.
In a study of five West Greenland archaeological sites, pH, thawing degree days, and porosity showed the strongest reported associations with preservation among the measured site variables. Those findings describe a small set of Arctic sites and should not be generalized to every climate, soil type, or burial history.

Why the microbial community and the bone itself matter
Soil does not contain one uniform decomposer population. Communities change with pH, moisture, oxygen, temperature, available nutrients, and the history of the burial. Aerobic and anaerobic organisms use different substrates and leave different chemical signatures.
The bone is equally variable. Cortical and trabecular regions have different surface areas and pore structures; cracks, prior weathering, disease, burning, and age can alter accessibility to microbes and water. In the Greenland respirometry work, measured oxidation rates varied by more than two orders of magnitude among bones. The researchers linked that spread partly to intrinsic bone properties and preservation state.
This variability explains why two bones buried a few metres apart can show very different collagen loss, mineral alteration, or oxidation. Environmental measurements describe the setting, but they do not replace analysis of the individual specimen.
Quantitative findings and what they do—and do not—mean
| Finding | Conditions and measurement | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| About fourfold mean increase in oxidation rate per 10 °C | Laboratory respirometry on bone samples; Matthiesen and colleagues, Journal of Archaeological Science, 2021 | Demonstrates temperature sensitivity under controlled conditions, not a universal field decay multiplier |
| More than 100-fold increase in measured oxidation after soaking dry bone samples in water | Controlled laboratory comparison in the same study | Shows how rehydration can change measured oxidation; it is not a direct estimate of burial-time decay |
| Median estimated annual organic-content loss of 3.8% | Wet bone at 15 °C; extrapolated from respirometry | An estimate dependent on the study’s assumptions and model |
| Median estimated annual organic-content loss of 0.02% | Dry bone at 75% relative humidity; extrapolated from respirometry | Illustrates the contrast between tested moisture states, not a universal preservation clock |
| More than two orders of magnitude variation in oxidation | Different bones measured in the laboratory study | Shows that specimen properties and prior preservation strongly influence results |
These numbers are useful for demonstrating mechanisms and the scale of variability. They should not be converted into a date by multiplying a percentage across decades, because field burials experience changing temperature, moisture, oxygen, and microbial conditions.
Comparing dry, moist, and waterlogged burial environments
When evaluating whether one burial environment is more protective than another, compare the same six dimensions rather than relying on a label such as “dry grave” or “peat soil.”

A dry, cool, well-sealed context may restrict both microbes and chemical reactions. A saturated, oxygen-poor context may slow aerobic decay but still permit anaerobic activity and dissolved-material transport. A cool but acidic burial can preserve some organic fractions while leaching mineral. The combination, not one label, determines the likely pattern.
How to interpret preservation evidence responsibly
Visible shape is an incomplete indicator. A bone may retain its external form while its mineral lattice becomes porous or its organic content declines. Conversely, surface alteration can be pronounced while some internal material remains.
Laboratory oxygen-consumption measurements are valuable for comparing samples, but they do not measure every decay process. The Arctic investigators specifically cautioned that oxygen consumption may miss low-pH leaching and anaerobic microbial decay. Environmental associations from five sites likewise identify likely controls without establishing a universal timeline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor archaeological or forensic interpretation, report the measured conditions, the sampling date, and the uncertainty around extrapolation. Avoid assigning a fixed “years until decay” value unless a validated model applies to that exact soil, climate, microbial community, and bone state.
Bottom line
The conditions most likely to slow microbial decay in buried bones are sustained cold, severe dryness, or saturation that restricts oxygen diffusion. None is sufficient on its own. Anaerobic microbes can remain active in oxygen-poor soil, acidic water can remove mineral, and individual bones can differ by more than 100-fold in measured oxidation. Reliable interpretation requires the full environmental combination—temperature, moisture, oxygen, pH, porosity, hydrology, microbial ecology, and bone condition—rather than a single preservation rule.
