Commercial spyware can expose far more than a phone’s location. Depending on the app, device, permissions and installation method, documented cases include location, calls, texts, email, photos, browsing history, screenshots and, on some Android phones, live microphone or camera capture. That does not mean every spyware product can read everything on every phone. Access is conditional, and the evidence does not support a universal list of data that all spyware can or cannot reach.
What “commercial spyware” means
Commercial spyware is surveillance software sold or distributed to private individuals rather than only to government agencies. In intimate-partner abuse situations it is commonly called stalkerware. The Coalition Against Stalkerware defines stalkerware as software made available directly to individuals that lets a remote user monitor another person’s device without consent and without explicit, persistent notification. Physical access, an unlocked phone or account credentials used during installation do not, by themselves, establish consent.

The category is wider than a single hidden app. A legitimate parental-control, family-location or device-management tool can be misused for covert surveillance, while some products are designed specifically to conceal monitoring. The practical question is therefore not whether a product is marketed as “monitoring,” but what access it obtained on the particular phone and whether the owner knowingly agreed to it.

The capabilities below come from documented app analyses and an enforcement case, not from a claim that every commercial spyware product has all of them. The Android study by Liu and colleagues, published in Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies in 2023, examined 14 leading consumer spyware apps. The US Federal Trade Commission’s 2021 SpyFone case describes a separate product and its security failures.

| Data or function | What has been documented | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Collection of location and movement data; the FTC said SpyFone exposed live and GPS location. | Usually depends on location permission, device services and the product’s design. |
| Texts, calls and email | The 2023 Android study describes monitoring texts, calls, email and related activity. The FTC described SpyFone access to text messages. | Email monitoring in the FTC account required rooting the Android phone. |
| Photos and screenshots | Researchers documented photo-related monitoring and screenshots. The FTC said SpyFone accessed photos. | The app must obtain the relevant permissions or elevated access. |
| Web activity | The FTC said SpyFone collected web histories; the Android study reported monitoring of related online activity. | Coverage can vary by browser, operating-system version and app implementation. |
| Microphone | The Android apps studied included live microphone access and on-demand audio capture. | This is a finding in the analyzed apps, not proof of a universal capability. |
| Camera and video | The same study documented on-demand audio/video capture among the apps it tested. | Camera access depends on the device, permissions and whether the app can operate while hidden. |
| iPhone and iPad backup data | The Coalition says some stalkerware obtains information from iCloud backups. | This is a cloud-backup route, not evidence that a covert app can directly read every item on an iPhone. |
Can spyware read text messages?
Some products have been documented doing so. They may collect messages through granted device permissions, notification access, operating-system features or elevated access, depending on the phone and app. A text shown in a notification can be exposed through a different route from a message stored inside an app. The evidence does not establish that every message in every messaging service is automatically available.
Can it turn on the microphone or camera?
Some Android spyware apps analyzed in 2023 accepted commands for live microphone access and on-demand audio or video capture. That finding should be read narrowly: it describes the tested apps and their operating conditions. It is not a guarantee that any suspected app can silently activate either sensor, nor that an iPhone or Android phone is immune.
What spyware cannot be assumed to access
“Can someone see everything on my phone?” is understandable, but the technically accurate answer is no universal rule. The evidence covers particular products, versions and access routes. It does not map every current iOS and Android release, every account configuration or every encrypted application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Not automatically every app or file. A permission granted to one app does not prove access to all other apps’ private stores or to every file on the device.
- Not every encrypted conversation by default. The documented cases do not establish universal access to end-to-end encrypted chats, nor do they show that encryption is always defeated. A spyware app might capture content before encryption, after decryption on the screen, through notifications or by obtaining account backups, but those are separate conditions.
- Not every password. The sources do not support a blanket claim that spyware can read passwords saved in every password manager or browser. A compromised account, keylogger-like function, screen capture or exposed notification could reveal some credentials, but none is guaranteed.
- Not a permanent live feed in every case. Camera and microphone control was documented in some Android apps, not all products or platforms.
- Not complete iPhone access simply because an iPhone is targeted. The Coalition’s iPhone and iPad observation concerns information obtained from some iCloud backups. It is a distinct route from installing an app that reads the entire handset.
Conversely, do not treat an iPhone as categorically safe or an Android phone as categorically compromised. Installation route, permissions, operating-system protections, account security and whether the phone was rooted all matter.

How installation and later monitoring differ
Stalkerware commonly needs initial physical access to an unlocked phone. The Coalition identifies physical access and the ability to unlock the device as usual requirements. In the 2023 Android study, the installer placed the app on the phone, granted extensive permissions and linked it to an online portal. After that setup, the person monitoring the device could issue commands and receive collected information remotely without holding the phone again for every update.
Some products also rely on account or cloud access rather than a covert app. Someone who controls an Apple, Google, email or other account may reach synchronized data or a backup even when no hidden app is installed. That is why “no suspicious app found” does not prove that an account or backup is secure.
The FTC’s SpyFone account illustrates how elevated access changes the picture. Users installing its Android software had to bypass device restrictions, and rooting was required for some functions, including email monitoring. Rooting is a specific condition in that case, not a requirement for every spyware product.
How to interpret signs that a phone is being monitored
Possible technical signs include rapid battery drain, an unusual increase in mobile-data use, unexplained Screen Time changes and strange notifications. The Coalition stresses that each can have an ordinary cause, and some stalkerware produces no obvious side effects.

Context can be more informative than a single metric. A person who repeatedly knows unusually specific details about your movements, calls or private conversations may have access through a device, an account, another person or ordinary observation. That pattern does not prove spyware is installed, but it warrants a safer investigation.
A reputable antivirus product may detect much stalkerware, according to the Coalition, but no scan is a guarantee. A clean result cannot rule out account compromise, an undetected product, a backup-based route or software that is not classified as spyware.
Put safety before deleting anything
If a partner, family member or other person could react violently or intensify harassment, changing the phone may alert them. The Coalition warns that removal can increase danger, and deleting an app may destroy evidence that a survivor or law-enforcement professional needs. Searches for help on the monitored phone may also be visible.
- Use a safer device first. Contact a trusted survivor-assistance or technology-safety service from a phone or computer the suspected person has not accessed.
- Make a personal safety plan. Decide who can help, where you can go and how you will communicate if monitoring is discovered. Do not rely on a technical fix alone.
- Decide whether evidence matters. Preserve relevant messages, screenshots, dates and device information only when doing so is safe. Do not keep evidence on an account or device the suspected person controls.
- Secure important accounts separately. From the safer device, change passwords to strong, unique values and enable two-factor authentication where available. Check recovery addresses, logged-in sessions and unfamiliar devices.
- Choose a removal route deliberately. Consider the risk of alerting the person, the need to retain evidence, the safety of backing up data and whether specialist help is available before resetting or replacing the phone.
Removal options and their trade-offs
No single action is safe or effective for everyone. The Coalition lists several approaches, each with different consequences.

| Option | What it can do | Costs and risks to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Replace the phone | The Coalition describes replacement as the best way to get rid of stalkerware on the old handset. | It can be expensive, may be unsafe if the change is noticed and does not secure a compromised account by itself. |
| Factory reset | Described by the Coalition as almost as effective as replacement for removing device software. | It erases data, may erase evidence and can be undermined if an attacker still controls the account or reinstalls the app. |
| Antivirus removal | Can remove a detected threat without the disruption of replacing the phone. | Detection is not guaranteed; removal may trigger an alert and a false negative is possible. |
| Manual Android removal | Specialist Android guidance can help identify and remove a suspicious app or permission. | It requires care, may miss an account or backup route and can increase danger if the suspected person is watching changes. |
Back up only what is safe to retain, and consider whether a backup could carry unwanted settings or expose evidence. After a reset or replacement, update the operating system, install apps only from trusted sources, review permissions and sign in with newly secured accounts. These steps reduce risk but do not substitute for checking account access.

The person who installed spyware is not necessarily the only party who can obtain its data. Liu and colleagues reported that some tested services transmitted sensitive information in plaintext or stored it in poorly protected cloud systems. In the SpyFone enforcement action, the FTC described unencrypted stored photos and texts, weak access controls and purchaser passwords sent in plaintext. The FTC said a hacker accessed the company’s server in August 2018 and obtained personal data belonging to about 2,200 consumers.
That incident is a case-specific enforcement finding, not a current breach rate for the entire spyware market. It does show why installing surveillance software creates a second security risk: private data may be copied to a vendor’s portal, exposed through weak credentials or stolen from the service itself.

- The 2023 technical study directly analyzed 14 consumer Android spyware apps. Its results explain mechanisms in that sample, not every product now sold.
- The paper cites a 63% increase in devices identified with spyware apps between September 2020 and May 2021, attributed to Norton Labs. It also cites a 93% increase in spyware-app use in the UK over a similar period, attributed to Avast. Both figures are secondary attributions within the paper, not current prevalence measurements.
- The FTC’s about 2,200 consumers figure refers specifically to the August 2018 SpyFone server-access incident described in its 2021 enforcement announcement.
Operating-system behavior, detection coverage and the availability of particular spyware products change over time. Treat these figures as historical evidence about documented cases, not as a complete measurement of current risk.

Practical answers to the most common questions
Can someone monitor a phone without continuous physical access?
Yes, after an app has been installed, unlocked and linked to a remote portal, later collection and commands can occur remotely. Account or cloud-backup access can also provide data without the same app-install scenario.
Does a factory reset always solve the problem?
It can remove device software and is described by the Coalition as almost as effective as replacing the phone, but it is not an automatic account-security fix. It may erase evidence, alert the person monitoring the phone or leave a compromised account available for renewed access.
Is unusual battery drain proof of spyware?
No. Battery use, data spikes, Screen Time changes and notifications have many benign causes, and some spyware has no visible symptoms. Treat them as clues that need safe, contextual checking.
Can spyware make an iPhone completely transparent to another person?
The cited evidence does not support that universal claim. It supports a specific route in which some iPhone or iPad stalkerware obtains iCloud-backup information. The extent of access depends on the account, backup contents, device state and software involved.
The bottom line
Commercial spyware has been shown to collect location, messages, calls, email, photos, browsing activity and screenshots, with live audio or video documented in some Android apps. Those capabilities are conditional, not a promise that every product can see everything. Initial physical access, permissions, rooting, account control and cloud backups determine what is exposed. If you suspect monitoring, protect your safety and accounts from a device the suspected person cannot access before deleting apps, resetting the phone or replacing it.
