Claude Code permissions decide when its tools may act immediately, when you must approve an action, and which tools are blocked altogether. They are controls on execution—not a guarantee that a proposed command, edit, or plan is correct or safe.
For most work, start in Plan or Manual mode, review consequential changes, and grant recurring approvals only for narrow, familiar operations. Use Accept edits when file changes are expected but shell commands should remain gated. Auto can reduce interruptions with a documented background safety check where your organization and model support it, but it still requires judgment. Keep sandboxing separate: it limits filesystem and network reach, while permission modes govern approval decisions.

What Claude Code permissions control
Claude Code can inspect files, edit them, run shell commands, and use other tools. A permission decision is the gate in front of those actions. Depending on the selected mode, Claude may proceed, ask you first, or be prevented from using a tool.

The table describes the current mode descriptions in Anthropic’s Help Center FAQ. It is not a promise that every release exposes the same labels or handles every tool identically.
How to choose a mode for the task
Use Plan before unfamiliar or high-impact work
Plan mode is read-only. Ask Claude to inspect the repository, identify affected files, explain dependencies, and propose a sequence of changes. This is the safest way to learn what it intends to do before any edit or command is authorized.
Use it before database migrations, authentication changes, build-system rewrites, broad refactors, or work in a production checkout. Once the plan is clear, switch to a mode that matches the amount of review you want during implementation.
Use Manual when every consequential action needs a checkpoint
Manual mode asks before risky edits or commands. It is appropriate when the repository contains secrets, deployment scripts, customer data, or unfamiliar automation. Read each prompt as a proposed operation: check the path, arguments, inputs, and expected side effects before approving.
Use Accept edits when edits are routine but commands are not
Accept edits removes repeated approval prompts for file changes while retaining prompts for command execution. It can make a formatting pass or a mechanical refactor less tiring without allowing an unreviewed shell command to run. Inspect the diff frequently; an edit that is individually harmless can still be wrong in aggregate.

Use Auto only when reduced interruption is worth the risk
Auto mode can make permission decisions with a background safety check where the feature is enabled. It is intended to reduce approval friction, not to eliminate responsibility. The mode may be unavailable because of organization policy or model support, and its safeguards should not be treated as complete protection.
Recommended Free Tools
Anthropic warns that bypassing permission checks can produce dangerous and destructive outcomes and should not be used outside isolated environments. Keep automatic operation for workspaces where a mistake can be contained, and retain backups or version control so you can recover.
Switching modes in the CLI
The current Help Center FAQ says you can press Shift+Tab to cycle through available permission modes. The labels shown in your session are authoritative for that installation; a managed account may expose fewer choices.
- Start Claude Code in the intended project directory.
- Confirm that the checkout, branch, and environment are correct before granting access.
- Press Shift+Tab to cycle through the modes your account supports.
- Stop on Plan, Manual, Accept edits, or Auto according to the task’s risk and review needs.
- Ask Claude to state what it will inspect, change, or run before approving the first consequential action.
If a mode does not appear, do not assume a command-line workaround will restore it. Organization settings and supported models can control availability; check the current Anthropic documentation or ask the administrator who manages the account.
Making recurring approvals safer
Claude Code approvals normally last for the current session. When the same low-risk operation is requested repeatedly, the FAQ describes three ways to reduce prompts: choose “always allow” at a prompt, add a permission pattern in .claude/settings.json, or manage rules through /permissions.

- Prefer a specific, familiar operation over a wildcard that covers an entire tool category.
- Limit the rule to the repository, directory, or command family that actually needs it.
- Do not authorize commands that can delete files, change permissions, upload data, install arbitrary software, or alter production systems unless that scope is deliberate.
- Review the rule after a project changes; a pattern that was safe for one layout can become dangerous after scripts or directories are added.
The exact matching and precedence behavior for permission rules across versions and managed settings is not comprehensively established in the available public guidance. For complicated policies, use the current settings reference rather than assuming that one rule overrides another in a particular order.

“It keeps asking permission for the same commands”
Repeated prompts are usually a sign that the approval was session-only, the command does not match an existing rule, or a policy is preventing persistence. They can also occur when Claude varies an argument, path, or tool invocation enough that a narrow pattern no longer applies.
- Read the prompt and identify the exact tool and operation being requested.
- Decide whether the operation is predictable and low risk. If not, keep approving it manually.
- For a suitable recurring action, select “always allow” if that option is shown, or add a narrowly scoped pattern through
/permissionsor.claude/settings.json. - Run the command once more and verify that the rule covers only the intended operation.
- If prompts continue, check for organization-managed settings, a changed command shape, or a mode that intentionally requires approval.
Do not solve prompt fatigue by enabling every tool. Fewer prompts are useful only when you still understand what has been authorized.
CLI controls beyond interactive modes
The CLI reference documents additional controls that are separate from the interactive mode selector:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Option | Purpose | Safe-use consideration |
|---|---|---|
--permission-mode |
Selects a permission mode when starting Claude Code. | Confirm the selected mode at session start, especially in scripts or shared launchers. |
--allowedTools |
Specifies tools that may be used. | Allow only tools required for the task; tool access does not make the resulting work correct. |
--disallowedTools |
Blocks specified tools. | Use it as a deny boundary for capabilities your project must not expose. |
--add-dir |
Adds directories to the session’s accessible locations. | Include only directories Claude genuinely needs; check for secrets and unrelated projects first. |
--dangerously-skip-permissions |
Skips permission prompts. | Anthropic labels this option “use with caution.” Treat it as an isolated-environment choice, not a convenience default. |
Flags can be combined with organization policy and account restrictions. A command-line option that appears valid may still be unavailable or constrained in a managed installation, so test the effective behavior in a disposable project.
Why skipping prompts is not a safety feature
Prompt skipping removes a human checkpoint. It does not add validation, rollback, least-privilege enforcement, or protection from malicious instructions in a repository. A project can contain a script that wipes a directory, a dependency lifecycle hook that runs code during installation, or a document that attempts to redirect the agent. Automatic execution can approve the step before you notice the implication.
Anthropic’s Auto mode announcement states: “While some developers choose to bypass permission checks with –dangerously-skip-permissions, skipping permissions can result in dangerous and destructive outcomes and should not be used outside of isolated environments.” The warning applies even when the task seems routine.

If you must run unattended, isolate the workspace, remove credentials that are not required, use a disposable branch or container, and preserve a recovery path. Never infer that an isolated environment is safe for production secrets or irreversible external actions.
Sandboxing is a separate boundary
Anthropic describes sandboxing for Bash as two boundaries: filesystem isolation and network isolation. Filesystem controls limit which paths a command can read or write. Network controls limit outbound connectivity. These boundaries can reduce the damage of an incorrect or hostile command and can reduce approval fatigue by making repeated operations less alarming.
Sandboxing does not replace permission review. A command confined to a workspace can still destroy that workspace, consume resources, or produce incorrect code. Conversely, a permission mode may ask for approval even when a sandbox would contain the command.
Check platform support before relying on a sandbox
Operating-system support and setup details are platform-specific and can change. Use the current Anthropic sandboxing instructions for your environment before standardizing a configuration. Verify both what paths are exposed and whether network access is actually blocked; do not assume that installing a sandbox automatically enforces both boundaries.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A safe workflow for real projects
- Prepare the workspace. Open the intended repository, check the branch and remotes, and remove or mask credentials that are unnecessary for the task.
- Start read-only. Use Plan mode to request an inventory of relevant files, dependencies, tests, and proposed commands.
- Classify the impact. Mark actions as read-only, reversible edits, local commands, networked commands, or irreversible operations such as deployment and deletion.
- Select the narrowest suitable mode. Stay in Plan for analysis, use Manual for high-impact work, and use Accept edits only when routine edits justify fewer prompts.
- Review each consequential prompt. Check the exact path, command arguments, environment, network destination, and expected output before approving.
- Inspect changes continuously. Use version-control diffs and targeted tests after each logical batch instead of waiting until the end.
- Persist only proven approvals. If the same harmless operation repeats, add a narrow rule through the documented controls. Avoid broad patterns and re-evaluate them when scripts or directories change.
- Recover deliberately. Keep commits or backups, know how to revert edits, and stop the session if Claude proposes an action outside the agreed scope.
Common problems and how to respond
A command is denied even though it seems harmless
Check the active mode, the exact tool name, and any organization-level deny rule. A command can also require approval because its arguments imply risk. Do not weaken the policy blindly; restate the command’s purpose, inspect its scope, and approve it manually if appropriate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Edits appear without individual prompts
Accept edits and Auto can allow file changes without a prompt for every file. Stop and inspect the diff. If the behavior is unexpected, switch to Manual or Plan, undo the changes through version control, and continue only after the intended scope is clear.
Best Value
The Auto option is missing
Auto availability depends on organizational settings and supported models. Use Manual or Plan rather than trying to bypass the restriction. An administrator may have intentionally disabled automatic decisions.
A recurring rule authorizes too much
Remove or narrow the rule through /permissions or the documented settings file. Check whether a broad directory, wildcard, or command family includes destructive operations. Re-test with a harmless example before resuming normal work.
A sandboxed command cannot reach a required file or service
Identify whether the failure is caused by filesystem isolation or network isolation. Add only the specific directory or connection that the task requires, following current platform instructions. If the task needs production credentials or unrestricted network access, reassess whether it belongs in an isolated session at all.
Organization policy and model support
Permission behavior is not determined solely by your local preference. Managed settings can restrict modes, deny tools, control whether recurring approvals persist, or require additional review. Model support can affect whether Auto is offered. A team policy may therefore produce a different menu or prompt flow on two otherwise similar machines.
For a shared standard, document the version, operating system, active mode, allowed and disallowed tools, accessible directories, and sandbox boundaries. Re-check those details after upgrades because the Help Center FAQ and CLI reference are version-sensitive.
What permissions cannot guarantee
- Correctness: Approval does not prove that the code, command, or plan solves the problem.
- Benign intent: A repository instruction, script, or dependency can request actions you did not expect.
- Reversibility: A permitted command may alter external systems or delete data before you can undo it.
- Confidentiality: Allowing a tool or directory can expose files to processing or commands that access them.
- Complete isolation: Sandboxing boundaries depend on platform support and configuration; verify them rather than assuming they are universal.
Use source control, backups, least-privilege credentials, network controls, and review together. No single permission mode supplies all of those protections.
Practical decision checklist
- Is the task only inspection or planning? Choose Plan.
- Will it touch secrets, deployment, customer data, or unfamiliar scripts? Choose Manual and review every risky prompt.
- Are many predictable file edits expected while commands remain sensitive? Choose Accept edits.
- Is Auto available, and is the workspace isolated enough that an incorrect action is recoverable? Use it only when the answer to both is yes.
- Does a recurring approval cover one familiar operation, or an entire capability? Keep it only if the scope is narrow.
- Are filesystem and network boundaries understood for this operating system? Confirm them in the current sandbox documentation.
- Can you restore the repository and revoke access if the session goes wrong? If not, do not increase automation.
The Bottom Line
Claude Code permissions are a review and containment system, not a correctness guarantee. Start with Plan or Manual, grant only narrow recurring approvals, use Accept edits selectively, and reserve Auto or prompt skipping for isolated, recoverable environments.
